   Meer vraag naar machines in Japan
   Stijging sterker dan verwacht.
   
   (ABM FN-Dow Jones)Orders voor machines zijn in Japan in januari met 8,2 procent gestegen op maandbasis, zo bleek maandag uit cijfers van de Japanse overheid. Dat is sterker dan de 6,6 procent die werd verwacht.
   
   Op jaarbasis stegen de orders met 2,9 procent.
   
   Het betreft orders voor machines, exclusief orders voor schepen en van elektriciteitsbedrijven, om zo een goed beeld van de ontwikkeling van de bedrijfsinvesteringen te geven.

   TOKIO (AFN) - De beurzen in Azië zijn woensdag lager geëindigd in navolging van de koersverliezen op Wall Street. Beleggers in het Verre Oosten reageerden op het ontslag van de Amerikaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Rex Tillerson en er waren cijfers over de Chinese economie.
   
   De Japanse Nikkei-index sloot met een min van 0,9 procent op 21.777,29 punten. Tot de grotere verliezers in Tokio behoorden de chipfondsen zoals Renesas, Advantest en Tokyo Electron met minnen tot circa 3 procent na de verliezen voor de chipsector in New York. De Japanse overheid meldde daarnaast dat de machine-orders in januari flink zijn gestegen, na een scherpe daling van de orders in december.
   
   In Hongkong ging de Hang Seng in de tussentijdse handel 1,3 procent omlaag. Uit cijfers van het Chinese statistiekbureau bleek dat de industriële productie sinds begin dit jaar met meer dan 7 procent is gestegen, terwijl de winkelverkopen met bijna 10 procent klommen in de eerste twee maanden van dit jaar. Verder gingen de investeringen harder omhoog dan verwacht. Die beter dan verwachte cijfers kunnen de Chinese centrale bank mogelijk aansporen om maatregelen te nemen om economische oververhitting tegen te gaan.
   
   In Seoul leverde de Kospi 0,4 procent in. De All Ordinaries in Sydney daalde 0,7 procent.

   (ABM FN-Dow Jones)Het Japanse Toray neemt voor 930 miljoen euro TenCate Advanced Composites over. Dit maakten de betrokken partijen woensdag bekend.
   
   Toray, eveneens actief met hoogwaardige composietmaterialen, wil in de komende jaren de groei van TenCate Advanced Composites versnellen.
   
   "Er is een sterke strategische reden voor de transactie, met duidelijke voordelen voor beide bedrijven", klonk het in het begeleidende persbericht.
   
   "Met Toray hebben we de juiste partner gevonden om de leidende rol van TCAC in geavanceerde composietmaterialen uit te breiden", denkt CEO Jan Albers van TenCate.
   
   De transactie wordt vermoedelijk in de tweede helft van 2018 afgerond en moet nog worden goedgekeurd door toezichthouders.

   TOKIO (AFN) - De beurzen in het Verre Oosten lieten donderdag kleine koersuitslagen zien. Beleggers in Azië bleven voorzichtig rond de politieke ontwikkelingen in Washington, waaronder de benoeming van een nieuwe economische topadviseur door de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump.
   
   Larry Kudlow wordt de opvolger van Gary Cohn die opstapte uit protest tegen de importheffingen op staal en aluminium. Kudlow is voorstander van een strenger Amerikaans beleid in de handel met China. Daardoor werd de vrees voor een handelsoorlog opnieuw aangewakkerd.
   
   De Nikkei-index in Tokio eindigde 0,1 procent hoger op 21.803,95 punten. In Hongkong noteerde de Hang Seng in de tussentijdse handel een plusje van 0,1 procent. De Kospi in Seoul ging 0,4 procent omhoog en de beurs in Sydney daalde 0,2 procent.

   Japanse industriele productie omlaag
   Daling van 6,8 procent in januari.
   
   (ABM FN-Dow Jones)De industrie in Japan heeft in januari flink minder geproduceerd in vergelijking tot een maand eerder. Dit bleek vrijdag uit cijfers van het Japanse ministerie van Handel en Industrie.
   
   De industriële productie in Japan nam in januari met 6,8 procent af op maandbasis. Ten opzichte van januari 2017 produceerde de Japanse industrie evenwel 2,5 procent meer.
   
   Een eerdere raming wees nog op een krimp van 6,6 procent op maandbasis in januari.

   TOKIO (AFN) - De beurs in Tokio is vrijdag lager gesloten. Beleggers in de Japanse hoofdstad waren nerveus door ontwikkelingen in Washington, waar kenners spreken van hernieuwde onrust rondom president Donald Trump.
   
   Naar verluidt heeft speciaal aanklager Robert Mueller documenten opgevraagd die verband houden met de Russische zakelijke belangen van president Donald Trump. Daarmee zou Trump voor het eerst echt betrokken raken bij het onderzoek naar Russische inmenging bij de verkiezingen. Trump zou zelf zijn nationale veiligheidsadviseur aan de kant willen zetten, in dezelfde week dat minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Rex Tillerson de laan uit werd gestuurd.
   
   Het sentiment was al fragiel door zorgen dat de Amerikaanse invoer van staaltarieven een handelsoorlog veroorzaakt, wat de wereldwijde economie schaadt. Vanwege die heffingen stapte Trumps economisch topadviseur Gary Cohn eerder al uit protest op. De Nikkei-index in Tokio eindigde 0,6 procent in het rood op 21.676,51 punten. Bedrijven die sterk afhankelijk zijn van de export gingen omlaag. Zo verloor Sony 1,4 procent.
   
   Herbenoeming
   
   In Japan ging de aandacht ook uit naar de centrale bank, waar de herbenoeming voor een periode van vijf jaar van bankgouverneur Haruhiko Kuroda officieel werd goedgekeurd. Daardoor zal volgens marktpartijen de komende tijd weinig veranderen aan het monetaire beleid van de Bank of Japan.
   
   Elders in het Verre Oosten was het sentiment verdeeld. De Kospi in Seoul daalde 0,1 procent, terwijl de Hang Seng in Hongkong tussentijds een min toonde van 0,2 procent. In Sydney steeg de All Ordinaries 0,5 procent.

   Japanse export naar China onder druk
   In februari nog wel groei.
   
   (ABM FN-Dow Jones)De export in Japan is in februari wat minder hard dan verwacht gestegen. Dit bleek maandag uit cijfers van de Japanse overheid.
   
   De export steeg op jaarbasis met 1,8 procent, na een dubbelcijferige toename een maand eerder. Economen hadden voor februari gerekend op een stijging van 2,4 procent.
   
   Vooral de uitvoer naar China drukte de groei. De export naar China liep met bijna tien procent terug.
   
   Naar Europa steeg de export daarentegen met 11,5 procent. De uitvoer naar de Verenigde Staten nam met 4,3 procent toe.
   
   De Japanse import steeg in februari met 16,5 procent.
   
   Het handelstekort van Japan kwam uit op 3,4 miljard yen, hoewel er was gerekend op een tekort.

   Nikkei begint week met verlies

   TOKIO (AFN) - De aandelenbeurs in Japan is maandag met verlies aan de nieuwe handelsweek begonnen. De stemming werd gedrukt door een duurdere Japanse yen. Daarnaast werd alvast gelet op de Amerikaanse Federal Reserve, die dinsdag begint aan zijn tweedaagse rentevergadering.
   
   De toonaangevende Nikkei in Tokio eindigde 0,9 procent in de min op 21.480,90 punten. Vooral de exporteurs werden van de hand gedaan door de stijging van de yen. De dalende populariteit van de Japanse premier Shinzo Abe, vanwege een politiek schandaal rond een gronddeal van de overheid, zorgde ook voor terughoudendheid onder beleggers. Bij de deal zou mogelijk sprake zijn geweest van vriendjespolitiek.
   
   Techfondsen als Sharp (min 1,7 procent), Samsung (min 0,1 procent), Japan Display (min 2,4 procent) en LG Display (min 1,4 procent) stonden onder druk in Tokio en Seoul. Aanleiding waren berichten dat iPhonemaker Apple bezig is met de ontwikkeling van zijn eigen schermtechniek.
   
   Hyundai Motor
   
   De Kospi in Seoul leverde 0,8 procent in. De Zuid-Koreaanse automakers gingen omlaag. Hyundai Motor zakte 3,8 procent.
   
   Elders in het Verre Oosten lieten de beurzen een gemengd beeld zien. De All Ordinaries in Sydney klom 0,2 procent en de Hang Seng-index in Hongkong ging tussentijds 0,2 procent vooruit. De Hongkongse tycoon Li Ka-Shing kondigde vrijdag zijn pensioen aan. Zijn bedrijf CK Hutchison Holdings daalde maandag 1,4 procent.

   Japan Times reported that the newly appointed president and chief executive officer of Kobe Steel Ltd vowed to restore damaged trust caused by a data falsification scandal at the firm, saying it is essential to rebuild corporate governance and culture. Mr Mitsugu Yamaguchi, currently an executive vice president at Japan’s third-largest steel-maker, who will assume his new position on April 1 said that “Carrying out a drastic reform on governance and corporate culture is my duty and a critical process for our company to regain trust. I am taking this very seriously.”
   
   Mr Yamaguchi said that “We are aiming to transform ourselves into a company that maintains truly unbending compliance and makes sustainable growth, adding that thoroughly implementing measures to prevent any recurrence is also his responsibility. For example, the firm plans to use more automated systems to record inspection data to prevent employees from manipulating it. It will also strengthen quality management by forming a special team that will tackle related issues.”
   
   An investigation conducted by a third party on the scandal, disclosed earlier this month, said employees had engaged in misconduct on a series of occasions due to weak corporate governance and pressure from headquarters over profitability. This has led to a culture that prioritized winning purchase orders and meeting delivery deadlines over ensuring quality.
   
   It added that the Kobe Steel group had been plagued with sectionalism and a closed corporate culture in which personnel transfers and communications with different sections hardly ever took place. The environment had facilitated continuous wrongdoing dating back to the 1970s.

    TOKIO (AFN) - De effectenbeurs in Japan is dinsdag opnieuw lager gesloten. Vooral de technologiebedrijven stonden onder onder druk in navolging van de koersverliezen onder de Amerikaanse branchegenoten. Ook namen beleggers geen grote posities in voorafgaand aan een nationale feestdag. De financiële markten in Tokio zijn woensdag gesloten. Op die dag komt de Amerikaanse Federal Reserve met zijn rentebesluit.
    
    De Nikkei in Tokio ging uiteindelijk 0,5 procent lager de handel uit op 21.380,97 punten. Een dag eerder verloor de hoofdindex al 0,9 procent. Chipmachinemaker Tokyo Electron zakte 1,2 en producent van elektronische apparatuur Yaskawa Electric leverde 2,6 procent in.
    
    De andere belangrijke beurzen in het Verre Oosten lieten een overwegend hoger beeld zien. De All Ordinaries in Sydney daalde 0,4 procent en de Kospi in Seoul won 0,2 procent. De Hang Seng-index in Hongkong noteerde tussentijds 0,1 procent in de plus en de beurs in Shanghai klom 0,2 procent.

    Tokyo Steel to keep April prices unchanged
    
    Reuters reported that Japan’s top EAF steelmaker Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co Ltd announced that it would hold product prices steady in April as it needs to ensure markets have absorbed its hikes from earlier this year. Tokyo Steel’s Managing Director, Kiyoshi Imamura, told reporters “Overseas steel markets remain tight given the healthy economy worldwide and domestic steel demand remains solid. But we are keeping our prices unchanged next month to make sure our hikes through February have been absorbed by every layer of the market.”
    
    The company said last month that it would freeze product prices in March after three months of hikes on tight markets as well as rising transportation costs.

    Reuters reported that Japanese trade minister Hiroshige Seko said on Tuesday that there was a high possibility Japan would be exempted from U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium on per-item basis. Seko said he was aware Japanese steel makers and others were encouraging their US clients to apply for exemptions.
    
    He added that Japanese steel and aluminium products contributed greatly to US industry and that they were irreplaceable.

    US DOE demands proof steel is safe at Hanford nuclear waste-treatment plant
    
    Japan Times reported that federal government is demanding that the company building a giant nuclear waste treatment plant in Washington state provide records proving that the steel used in the nearly USD 17 billion project meets safety standards. The US Department of Energy in a letter obtained by The Associated Press said that records needed to ensure that the structural steel used in the project is safe are either missing or of “indeterminate quality.”
    
    The letter sent March 6 from the agency’s Office of River Protection in Richland, Washington, to Bechtel National Inc said that “This condition is a potentially unrecoverable quality issue,” which is building the long-delayed plant to dispose of wastes created in the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.
    
    The agency gave Bechtel National 14 days to provide proof that work on the project should continue.
    
    The plant is located on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation near Richland, Washington, which for decades made most of the plutonium for the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal. The resulting 56 million gallons (211 million liters) of radioactive and hazardous wastes are stored in 177 underground tanks, many of which are leaking.
    
    The waste treatment plant is designed to turn much of that waste into glass-like logs for burial, a technically demanding process.
    
    But construction of the giant plant, which began in 2002, has long been slowed by safety and technical issues.
    
    Bechtel National is working on providing the records, spokeswoman Staci West said.
    
    West said that “We have documentation that demonstrates the nuclear-grade structural steel meets project requirements. The safety and quality of the structural steel was never in question.”
    
    The letter from the Office of River Protection, which is named for the Columbia River that flows through the Hanford site, did not contend that the structural steel in the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant was defective. Rather it says that records proving the steel can perform its safety function were missing or of poor quality.

De handel verliep relatief rustig aangezien de belangrijke financiële markt in Tokio gesloten bleef vanwege een nationale feestdag. Beleggers keken verder uit naar de uitkomsten van de rentevergadering van de Amerikaanse centrale bank, die later op de dag naar buiten komen.
    
    De Hang Seng-index in Hongkong koerste tussentijds 1 procent hoger. Tencent, een zwaargewicht in de index, klom 1,3 procent voorafgaand aan de publicatie van de resultaten. Ook neemt het Chinese technologiebedrijf een belang van 5 procent in de Franse computerspelletjesmaker Ubisoft. Verzekeraar Ping An Insurance won 0,3 procent dankzij beter dan verwachte jaarcijfers. Het Chinese autobedrijf Geely, moeder van Volvo, meldde resultaten en verloor ruim 3 procent in Hongkong.

    Japanese Toyota cleared after Kobe Steel debacle
    
    The Drive reported that Japanese Steel producer Kobe Steel found itself in hot water when it announced improper conduct relating to materials used in vehicles. Several manufacturers were impacted including all the big boys out of Japan—Toyota, Subaru, Honda Mitsubishi, and Mazda. Even Ford and GM were on the list. Needless to say, Kobe Steel doesn’t bring the quality of Kobe Beef or Kobe Bryant. More like Colby Jack.
    
    Back on October 19th, Toyota announced the results of an investigation relating to aluminum plates used in their manufacturing process. Yesterday they broke down the results of an expanded investigation relating to other materials.
    
    Toyota examined the year-plus of data provided to them by Kobe Steel. Using the data which had the largest deviations from specifications met by Toyota’s other suppliers, the team went to work digging into the data. The team was able to confirm that Toyota vehicle quality and performance satisfied their own internal standards. Meaning, there was virtually no impact on Toyota vehicles.
    
    The team looked at materials which included aluminum plates, copper tubes, steel wires, cladding, extrusions, steel powder, and sputtering target materials. They separated their data based on whether the materials were directly purchased from the producer or purchased via a supplier. Looking for an impact on vehicles related to materials purchased from Kobe Steel in Japan and outside of Japan—Toyota found no problems.

    Japanse industrie groeit minder hard
    Inkoopmanagersindex in maart op 53,2.
    
    (ABM FN-Dow Jones)De bedrijvigheid in de Japanse industrie is in maart in een lager tempo gestegen. Dit bleek donderdag uit voorlopige cijfers van Markit Economics en Nikkei.
    
    De inkoopmanagersindex bereikte in maart een stand van 53,2, waar dit een maand eerder nog 54,1 was.
    
    Het aantal nieuwe orders, de output en de werkgelegenheid stegen in maart minder hard.

Elders in het Verre Oosten lieten de beursgraadmeters een gemengd beeld zien na het besluit van de Amerikaanse Federal Reserve om de rente met 25 basispunten te verhogen.     De Nikkei in Tokio eindigde 1 procent in de plus op 21.591,99 punten. Volgens handelaren gingen vooral pensioenfondsen en particuliere beleggers op koopjesjacht en werden recent afgestrafte aandelen opgepikt. Een duurdere Japanse yen werd daarbij genegeerd. Technologiebedrijven als Canon en Sony stegen tot 2,2 procent.
    
    De All Ordinaries in Sydney leverde 0,2 procent in en de Kospi in Seoul dikte 0,3 procent aan. De Hang Seng-index in Hongkong leed een tussentijds verlies van 0,3 procent. Zwaargewicht Tencent zakte bijna 3 procent, ondanks een hoger dan verwachte kwartaalwinst. De Chinese technologiegigant, die onlangs een belang nam in de Franse computerspelletjesmaker Ubisoft, liet weten meer investeringen te gaan doen.

    Japanese major steel firms dividends seen topping JPY 10 trillion
    
    Jiji Press reported that shareholder dividends at companies that are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s First Section and close their books in March are expected to top JPY 10 trillion for the first time in the current business year ending this month. Jiji Press survey showed that the survey covered 1,391 firms that release consolidated earnings results. Their combined dividends are seen growing 9 percent from the previous year to JPY 10.35 trillion, marking a record high for the fifth straight year.
    
    The final total may prove higher than the estimated level because the survey assumed that 62 companies, including Toyota Motor Corp., that have yet to release payout plans for the full year will pay the same amounts as in the previous year.
    
    Of the total, 591 firms, or more than 40 percent, plan to increase dividend payments.
    
    Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp., which expects a marked improvement in its earnings thanks to the recovery of steel prices, plans to increase its dividends by JPY 15 year on year to JPY 60 per share.
    
    Rival steelmaking group JFE Holdings Inc. is considering boosting its dividends to JPY 80 from JPY 30.
    
    Mitsubishi Corp which projects a 22% surge in its consolidated net profit in the current business year due to higher resources prices, and four other major trading companies also plan to increase their dividends.
    
    The expected growth in dividend payments also reflects moves to encourage companies to boost their management transparency and corporate value through stepped-up dialogue with investors, such as a plan by the Japanese government to revise this year its corporate governance code for the first time since the code’s introduction in 2015.
    
    The total fiscal 2017 dividend payments by all TSE First-Section firms, including companies that close their books in months other than March, are expected to reach JPY 12.21 trillion.

    Japan Q2 aluminium premiums set at USD 129 per tonne
    
    Reuters reported that Japanese aluminium buyers have agreed to pay producers premiums for supplies of the metal during the second quarter that are 25 % higher than the first quarter, reflecting surging spot premiums in the United States, five sources directly involved in the quarterly pricing talks said.
    
    The two sides agreed to a premium PREM-ALUM-JP of USD 129 per tonne for metal to be shipped during the April to June quarter, up from USD 103 in the first quarter. The premium is the highest in three years and marks the second consecutive quarterly rise.
    
    Japan is Asia’s biggest aluminium importer and the premiums for primary metal shipments it agrees to pay each quarter over the London Metal Exchange cash price set the benchmark for the region.
    
    The latest negotiations began last month between Japanese buyers and global producers, including Alcoa Corp, Rio Tinto and South32 Ltd, with initial offers for premiums ranging between USD 132 and USD 135 a tonne.
    
    The increase reflects a surge in US spot premiums to the highest in almost three years after US President Donald Trump flagged a 10 % import duty, as buyers sought to secure metal before higher costs come into force.
    
    Mr Trump pressed ahead earlier this month with the tariffs but exempted Canada and Mexico and offered the possibility of excluding other allies, backtracking from an earlier “no-exceptions” stance.
    
    US spot premiums for Comex aluminium rose to about 19.2 cents a pound (USD 423 a tonne) last week, the highest since March 2015.
    
    A source at a Japanese aluminium fabricator said that “All the contracts have been signed at USD 129 per tonne.”
    
    Three other buyer sources said they also struck their deals at USD 129 per tonne while a source at a smelter said his company agreed to pay USD 129 per tonne for its contracts.
    
    The new premium is lower than the US spot level, but is higher than current Japanese premiums in the low USD 120 a tonne range, a source at a trading company said.

    Consumentenprijzen Japan blijven stijgen
    Voedsel en energieprijzen duidelijk duurder.
    
    (ABM FN-Dow Jones)De consumentenprijzen in Japan zijn in februari gestegen. Dit bleek vrijdag uit overheidscijfers.
    
    De inflatie kwam in februari op jaarbasis uit op 1,5 procent. Op maandbasis was afgelopen maand sprake van een 0,1 procent hoger prijspeil.
    
    De kerninflatie zonder vers voedsel bedroeg in februari op jaarbasis 1,0 procent. De kerninflatie exclusief vers voedsel en energie kwam op jaarbasis uit op 0,5 procent.
