    Work Starts on Windpark Salzgitter

Work has now officially started to construct the seven turbines comprising the Windpark Salzgitter. Three will be erected on the site of the integrated steelworks operated by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, with four more on the surrounding Group premises. The developer and operator of the park is Avacon Natur GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Avacon AG. The hubs of the turbines built by Vestas will reach a height of 169 meters. They will have an overall output of around 30 MW. The cost of the project as a whole, including the construction of the wind turbines and the hydrogen plant as well as the necessary infrastructure, amounts to around 50 million euro.

The turbines are another building block in the pioneering Salzgitter Wind Hydrogen energy project, the purpose of which is to produce green hydrogen for use in steel production. Also in the course of this year, Salzgitter Flachstahl will be building a PEM Electrolysis plant to be supplied by Siemens. The hydrogen can be used in the reduction of iron ore in place of the usual carbon. It therefore plays an important role in the SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking” concept and contributes to the goal of low-CO2 steel production.

Works in preparation for the seven turbines began back in January, starting with access roads and areas for cranes and construction machinery. The turbines are scheduled to be completed in autumn 2020. The construction site is located on Salzgitter Group premises. Access is not permitted for safety reasons.

Toyota Motor Europe Installs Wind Turbine & Solar Panels at Brussels Head Office

As part of ongoing activities in Europe to transition its operations to clean renewable energy, Toyota Motor Europe has invested in two new technologies to produce on-site generated electricity at its Brussels headquarters. The company recently installed a wind turbine in front of its buildings, using state-of-the art technology. Additionally, 1400 solar panels have been placed on the roof of the Toyota After Sales Centre at the same site. Toyota Motor Europe is the first company within the Brussels area to mount a privately-owned wind turbine on its premises, and with a total capacity of 10 kW, it can generate up to 24 MWh per year. The wind turbine’s advanced design incorporates vertical wings which allow it to efficiently harness the wind from all directions and has an innovative ‘owl’ finish to reduce noise. And, standing at a height of only 23 m, it avoids any risk of interference with the nearby Zaventem airport’s operations.

Harnessing wind power is only one part of Toyota Motor Europe’s plan - the company’s renewable electricity supply is further boosted with the installation of 1400 photovoltaic panels capable of generating a maximum power of 460 kWp. It is expected that this solar array will generate 360 MWh per year.

Siemens Gamesa Launches 14 MW Offshore Direct Drive Turbine with 222-Meter Rotor

Siemens Gamesa’s new SG 14-222 DD offshore Direct Drive wind turbine now sees the light of day as a part of the solution. With an unprecedented 14-megawatt capacity, reaching up to 15 MW using the company’s Power Boost function, a 222-meter diameter rotor, 108-meter long blades, and an astounding 39,000 m2 swept area, the newest Siemens Gamesa wind turbine stands tall in a world currently undergoing enormous upheaval. The 14 MW capacity allows one SG 14-222 DD machine able to provide enough energy to power approximately 18,000 average European households every year. Approximately 30 SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines could furthermore cover the annual electricity consumption of Bilbao, Spain.

The 222-meter diameter rotor uses the new Siemens Gamesa B108 blades. As long as almost three Space Shuttles placed end-to-end, each 108-meter long IntegralBlade is cast in one piece using patented Siemens Gamesa blade technologies. Additionally, the turbine’s massive 39,000 m2 swept area is equivalent to approximately 5.5 standard football pitches. It allows the SG 14-222 DD to provide an increase of more than 25% in Annual Energy Production compared to the SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine.

Furthermore, the new offshore giant features a low nacelle weight at 500 metric tons. This light weight enables Siemens Gamesa to safely utilize an optimized tower and foundation substructure compared to a heavier nacelle. Benefits thus arise in the form of lower costs per turbine by minimizing sourced materials and reducing transportation needs.

EBRD Invests in Wind and Solar Energy in Poland

The EBRD is advancing the green energy transition in Poland by supporting Qair’s portfolio of almost 200 MW of renewable energy with five loans totalling PLN 280 million, approximately EUR 63 million equivalent. BNP Paribas is also providing project finance lending to the portfolio on a parallel basis. The portfolio includes the construction under the Polish renewable energy auction support scheme (contract for difference) of 93 MW of new capacity – the three wind farms Udanin (50 MW), Parzeczew (9 MW) and Wrzesnia (9 MW) and 25 MW of solar photovoltaic – as well as the operation of wind farms Linowo (58 MW) and Rzepin (48 MW).

The EBRD loans will be provided to five Polish special-purpose vehicles that are ultimately owned by two experienced sponsors – the French renewable energy developer and operator Qair and the French infrastructure fund RGreen Invest. As a leader in the independent production of energy from renewable sources, for over 30 years Qair has been promoting energy production methods based on local natural assets (sun, wind, water, biomass) both grid-connected and decentralised off-grid. The Qair group is independent and is owned by the family of Jean-Marc Bouchet, president and founder.

Poland still generates 80 per cent of its energy from coal, with harmful effects on the environment and human health. The country has committed itself to the EU climate and energy targets for 2030, which include a reduction of at least 40 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy has a key role to play in meeting that goal.

The EBRD started investing in Poland in 1991 and to date has provided €10.3 billion through 434 projects to all sectors of the economy. Supporting the country’s green transition with investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency remains one of the Bank’s priorities in Poland.

Ofgem Approves 600MW Shetland Transmission Link

Ofgem has approved a proposal by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks to build a 600MW subsea electricity transmission link from Shetland to mainland Scotland. The link would allow new wind farms on Shetland to export renewable electricity to the rest of Great Britain and help ensure supply of electricity on the islands. Ofgem’s approval is subject to receiving sufficient evidence by the end of 2020 that the 457MW Viking Energy Wind Farm project planned for Shetland is likely to go ahead.

Ofgem regulates network companies including SSEN, which is a subsidiary of SSE. All energy consumers pay for the cost of investment in new network capacity through their energy bills and the regulator ensures that it obtains the best deal possible for them.

In October last year, Ofgem was unable to approve SSEN’s original proposal for the link because the Viking Energy Wind Farm project had failed to win a subsidy in the UK Government’s Contract for Difference Auction. In January this year, SSEN submitted its revised proposal, taking account of updated progress of planned windfarms, as well as potentially increased electricity demand on the Shetland Isles. Ofgem will now carry out a final consultation on its minded to approval announced today.

Windplus is a consortium between EDP Renováveis, Engie, Repsol, and Principle Power

The WindFloat Atlantic project is taking one of the final steps towards becoming fully operational. The last of the three pre-assembled wind turbine platforms making up the project has left the Port of Ferrol today, heading for its final destination 20 km off the coast of Portugal at Viana do Castelo, in a journey that will take three days. This operation will be completed by hooking up this last unit to the pre-laid mooring system and connecting it to the rest of the offshore wind farm. This third platform will be installed next to the other two units, which are already up and running and supplying energy to the Portuguese electricity grid.

Transporting each of the three WindFloat Atlantic floating structures is a milestone in itself, as it sidesteps the need for towing craft designed specifically for this process and makes it possible for the project to be replicated elsewhere.

The floating structure – measuring 30 m high and with a 50 m distance between each of its columns – can support the world's largest commercially available wind turbines, of 8.4 MW production capacity each, on a floating structure. Once all three platforms making up the wind farm are installed, with their 25 MW of production capacity they will be able to generate enough energy to supply the equivalent of 60,000 users each year. WindFloat Atlantic could save almost 1.1 million tons of CO2.
    About WindFloat Atlantic project

The project is led by the Windplus, comprising EDP Renewables (54.4%), Engie (25%), Repsol (19.4%) and Principle Power Inc. (1.2%). The facility has three wind turbines mounted on floating platforms which are anchored with chains to the seabed at a depth of 100 m. The project uses WindFloat ® technology that minimises the environmental impact and facilitates access to untapped wind resources in deep waters.

The platforms have been built jointly by the two Iberian countries: two of them were manufactured at the shipyards in Setúbal (Portugal), while the third was constructed in Avilés and Fene (Spain).

This initiative has had the support from public and private institutions, encouraging companies that are leaders in their respective markets to take part in the project; while the Government of Portugal, European Commission and the European Investment Bank have provided financial support.

The companies that have made this project possible include, in addition to Principle Power, the joint venture between Navantia/Windar, the A- Silva Matos Group, Bourbon, the wind turbine supplier MHI Vestas and dynamic cable supplier JDR Cables.

WindFloat Atlantic project marks an important milestone for the industry as this is the first semi-submersible floating wind farm in the world.
