   Hoping to catch Tesla, GM just bought Cruise Automation for $1 billion

   With companies like Google, Tesla and reportedly Apple working on delivering autonomous vehicle technology to the masses, traditional auto manufacturers have begun taking steps to ensure that the industry doesn’t pass them by.
   
   Case in point: General Motors today announced its plan to acquire Cruise Automation, a company that achieved acclaim by selling sensor-laden “kits” that enabled car owners to add autopilot driving features to their cars after-market. Though financial details of the acquisition weren’t publicly released, it’s believed that GM picked up the company for more than $1 billion.
   
   In addition to Cruise Automation’s technology, GM will also be bringing the company’s tech-superstar CEO Kyle Vogt on board. An MIT grad, Vogt first rose to prominence after co-founding Justin.tv. A few years later, Vogt helped co-found Twitch, a company Amazon ultimately snatched up for $1 billion in 2014.
   
   The broader takeaway from the story is that car companies are finally realizing that it’s time for them to pick up the pace, especially in light of all of the innovative technology Tesla is obsessively bringing to the market. With respect to GM in particular, the company reportedly has plans to incorporate Cruise Automation’s technology into its vehicles during the manufacturing process.
   
   The auto industry is notoriously slow-moving, but it stands to reason that the next few years will be incredibly exciting to watch.
   
   As a final point, it’s worth pointing out that Porsche is one auto company that isn’t amped up about self-driving technology. Quite the opposite, in fact. During an interview last month Porsche CEO Oliver Blume dismissed self-driving cars while noting that no one buys a Porsche because they’re interested in having someone else (read: a computer) drive it.

   Dus Tom2 is dus uiteindelijk Euro 20 miljard+ waard. Denk dat er binnenkort nog een tak van sport gaat draaien. Namelijk: vastgoedverhuur in NL. In de afgelopen 5 jaren hebben hier mega afboekingen op plaats gevonden. Vooral de kantorenprijzen zijn meer dan 50% gezakt. Heeft iemand daar een idee bij?

   eens , commodities is duidelijk die zijn gebodemd en gedraaid, - denk dat je dat ook echt gaat zien voor 2017 in vraag en aanbod, dus die zou ik zeker als sector Kopen , ik kies liever individuele aandelen uit en stel dan mijn eigen mandje samen en doe dat in een mix tussen Miners en Olie/Gas waardes
   
   Heijmans zie ik zeker zitten voor 12 euro en die kan volgens mij ook als de bouw gaat oppikken naar 15 euro in 2 jaar, die sector is mi ook draaiende
   
   wat onroerend goed fondsen betreft ben ik t ook eens, die kunnen wel eens heel lucratief uitpakken, maar zou dan opteren voor liever privé bouw dan commercieel onr goed, enkel ik weet van geen goede fondsen af ?
   
   high tech ben ik eigenlijk wat minder enthousiast, denk dat de sector goed geprijsd is en het zijn voornamelijk US equities en die heb ik liever niet, uitzondering is voor mij BBRY die ik Long zit, denk dat dit echt een goede fit is voor een IBM of een andere big tech company die ook ' in the car ' wil komen.
   
   goed, kan me vergissen, maar denk echt dat je aan Eurostocks een vangnet hebt vanwege de ECB en ik zie het echt positief in, valt mi veel meer rendement hier te halen dan in US of Emerging markets.

   @Happy Chappy, ben nog steeds niet overtuigd dat AM een goede belegging is, simpelweg omdat er zo veel schulden zijn. Olie is inmiddels al behoorlijk opgelopen, Fugro en SBM idem. Heijmans is zoals voorzien al 50% gestegen. Het enige wat nog nauwelijks gestegen is, is bijvoorbeeld een Nieuwe Steen (NSI). Zit voor het grootste deel in Nederlandse kantoren. In 2013 is er een emissie geweest voor (uit mijn hoofd) Euro 3,85. Koers nu is 4,02 ondanks dat het bedrijf inmiddels goed bezig is geweest om de portefeuille op te schonen en de leegstand aan te pakken. Landelijk vindt er een omvangrijke conversie van kantoren naar hotels en woningen plaats. Dividend gaat dit jaar eindelijk weer een beetje omhoog (6,7%). Blijf verder een flink long belang op Tom2 houden naast Nederlandse biotech. Dit is ook vooral een LT aangelegenheid. In mijn ogen kun je hier nauwelijks een buil aan vallen nu het sentiment opknapt (in Europa) en ze leveren wat ze beloven. Voor wat betreft Tom2 is alleen al de waarde van het Telematics bedrijf een goede bodem onder het fonds.

   Race to Guide Self-Driving Cars Is Getting Another Competitor

   From cartographers on foot to gathering data from vehicles equipped with sensors, a Japanese company that started out making guides listing public hot spring baths is taking a leap into the world of autonomous driving.
   Zenrin Co., Japan’s biggest mapmaker which counts Google Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. among its clients, intends to build on its knowledge of Japan’s topography, which it has been honing for its seven decades in operation. To keep its edge and stave off competition, the company is working on a system to translate data gathered from vehicles mounted with cameras and other equipment in real time.
   
   Such capability is essential in developing maps for driverless cars that Japanese automakers including Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. aim to introduce after 2020. Zenrin joins Google, Mobileye NV and Germany’s HERE -- which was purchased from Nokia Oyj by Audi AG, BMW AG and Daimler AG -- in a race to develop systems that provide precise, contextual guidance for self-driving vehicles.
   Mapping technology is one of the biggest technical hurdles facing autonomous cars, according to Carlos Ghosn, chief executive officer of Nissan and Renault SA. Unlike traditional maps used in current car navigation, which rely on a pre-installed database, maps for autonomous driving need real-time updates including of traffic conditions and precise road information such as closures and new signs.
   “There’s a huge gap between making current navigation maps and maps for autonomous driving,” said Zenrin President Zenshi Takayama at the company’s headquarters in Tokyo. “It’s like comparing climbing Mount Fuji to climbing Mount Everest.”
   Such efforts are being stepped up as automakers across the world work on the technology to make self-driving cars a reality. As many as 12 million autonomous cars are forecast to be sold globally in 2035, accounting for about 10 percent of total car sales, according to IHS Automotive.
   
   Zenrin, which is 7.5 percent owned by Toyota, is counting on this new push to be a growth driver as competition erodes revenue from its key businesses such as smartphone map services and car navigation maps. Zenrin posted two consecutive financial-year periods of sales and operating profit declines through March 2015. Its shares have fallen 20 percent this year, compared with a 12 percent decline in the benchmark Topix index.
   Advanced Technologies
   “No matter how complete your current map database is, you can’t put everything in there, and real-time deep learning capabilities are essential for autonomous driving,” said Zhou Lei, a Tokyo-based partner at Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting. “In order to compete with rising rivals, especially new entrants like Mobileye, Zenrin also needs advanced computer science technologies.”
   Zenrin intends to develop a system to make three-dimensional maps automatically from the data sets generated from vehicles mounted with various sensing equipment. The aim is a system that will be updated with fresh information, according to Tomoki Yamaguchi, a spokesman at the mapmaker. Zenrin, which is using data collected by equipment from other companies, didn’t give further details of how it plans to gather real-time information.
   “If we just use a monitor car, we will only be able to get the same information as everyone else -- we don’t have any advantage,” said Takayama. “You still need the knowhow to turn the data into maps.”
   Hot Springs
   Zenrin started making tourist guide maps in west Japan’s renowned onsen, or hot springs, town of Beppu in 1948. Over the years, Zenrin moved from making meticulous print maps to digital systems used in car navigation, for which Zenrin has the largest market share in Japan.
   It has about 1,000 field surveyors, such as Fumiaki Kohguchi. On a January afternoon, Kohguchi walked through the streets and alleys of Tokyo’s Bunkyo district noting changes such as new tenants or parking lots. He’s aware of the contribution his work could make to autonomous driving.
   
   “When you use a car navigation system, the liability is still on the driver,” said Kohguchi. “But for autonomous-driving cars, the liability could be on the maps.”
   Crowd-Sourcing
   In January, Mobileye, the Jerusalem-based maker of software for driverless cars that went public in a $1 billion offering in 2014, unveiled partnerships with General Motors Co. and Volkswagen AG to develop new mapping technology that gathers crowd-sourced real-time data from cars made by the automakers.
   The German carmakers’ digital mapping unit, HERE, makes maps accurate to within as few as 10 centimeters (4 inches), a level of detail necessary for auto-guidance.
   While companies like HERE have a strong presence in the West, it’s not the case in Japan and China, according to Matteo Fini, an auto-components analyst for IHS Automotive.
   “You can see clearly that carmakers need to have some strong local partners in order to make sure they have global coverage,” he said. “The local mapmakers like Zenrin can also be very valuable assets” for automakers.
   Zenrin, which aims to be able to sell maps enabling autonomous driving by 2020, said it will set up a separate division in April to directly report to the president to further strengthen its efforts in the area.
   The race to develop maps for self-driving cars will intensify as more companies jump in, according to Deloitte’s Zhou.
   “An autonomous-driving vehicle without good maps is like a human being with a missing part in his brain -- it’s not going to work,” said Zhou. “You need to give the car all the necessary information for it to drive autonomously, and the map is an essential part.”

   Maps are quickly becoming the currency of self-driving vehicles, as recent acquisitions by automakers have shown — and now that's true not just for cars.
   Facebook’s Connectivity Lab announced today it has generated high-resolution population maps of 20 countries, accurate down to 5 meters (about 15 feet). These maps will guide Facebook's still-in-development drones as they circle populations of people in remote areas and beam down wireless internet, according to Yael Maguire, head of the Connectivity Lab.
   Just like driverless cars need accurate maps to plot the safest and most efficient route, Facebook’s drones need accurate maps to know where to find people. The drones will make 1-km loops (over half a mile), it’s exact flight path based on where it can serve.
   The Connectivity Lab’s maps were obtained from the World Bank and Columbia University, and totaled 350 terabytes for 14.6 billion images. To figure out where people were living, the lab employed Facebook’s artificial intelligence algorithm that’s used to identify objects. They pointed the algorithm towards recognizing structures that indicated humans, like roads and homes.
   To train the algorithm, the team pre-labeled 8000 images of one country with information about whether a building was in the image or not. They then showed this to the algorithm, which was able to use that information learn “where” and “what” buildings were valid. This training method worked with only “slightly reduced” efficiency across the other 19 countries, according to a Facebook Connectivity lab blog post.
   To think about how precise these maps need to be, its easiest to think about the range of a typical Wi-Fi network. Maguire says that if two locations are any farther than a typical router can reach, they need to be separated on a map. That’s why the 5-meter (15-foot) precision is so important.
   The maps can also be used for other purposes, and soon the Connectivity Lab will make them all publicly available. Organizations will be able to analyze where new traditional infrastructure is needed, like which populations lack access to water or electricity.

    Ja het duurt bij Tom2 altijd een tijdje voor dat het gezonde verstand terug komt. Was met name in 2014 het geval.
