Siemens completes first successful installation of 3D printed part in Nuclear Power Plant

It seems 3D printing is touching every single industry under the sun these days, including nuclear power plants. Regardless of how you feel about them, they do exist, and they are here to stay. It’s important to continue researching ways that additive manufacturing technology can benefit power plants, as the advancement of metal additive manufacturing can help produce components for these facilities in a more secure way.

This summer, the US Department of Energy tapped GE to lead a $2 million additive manufacturing research project that’s relevant to advanced nuclear technology, and Russia’s nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, is working to develop the first industrial metal 3D printer for the country’s nuclear industry.

Today, global technology powerhouse Siemens announced that it has completed the first successful commercial installation, and continuing safe operation, of a 3D printed part inside a nuclear power plant.

This milestone is a nuclear industry breakthrough: the nuclear sector obviously has incredibly exacting reliability and safety requirements, so the fact that a 3D printed part made it through these standards is a big accomplishment. The 3D printed replacement part was produced for a plant that’s been in operation for over thirty years in Slovenia, the Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NEK).

In terms of safety, this power plant is ranked one of the highest of all European nuclear power plants by the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG), an independent, expert advisory group. The Krško plant is of critical importance to the region, because it provides over 15% of Croatia’s power and more than 25% of Slovenia’s. This isn’t the first time Siemens has worked with the plant: the company has provided service and performed modifications on its non-nuclear side, including turbine and generator equipment, for over a decade.

The part Siemens worked with is a metallic impeller, with a diameter of 108 mm, for a fire protection pump that operates in a constant rotation and provides pressure for the plant’s fire protection system. The original impeller is pretty old: it’s been in use since the plant was commissioned back in 1981. The manufacturer of the original impeller isn’t even in business anymore, which made this obsolete, non-OEM part the perfect additive manufacturing test subject. As the original design is “virtually impossible” to get, additively manufacturing it allows older plants, like NEK, to continue operating. A team of Siemens experts in Slovenia reverse-engineered the part, and created a “digital twin.”

The Siemens state-of-the-art additive manufacturing facility in Finspång, Sweden, which opened a little over a year ago and marked the company’s first foray into metal additive manufacturing, 3D printed the impeller.

In order to meet quality and safety assurance requirements, and make sure that the part would perform, the 3D printed impeller was put through extensive testing over several months, in collaboration with the operations team at the Krško plant. A CT scan and additional material testing took place at a separate, independent institution, and demonstrated that the 3D printed impeller’s material properties outmatched those of the original part.

The Krško plant and Siemens are already looking for ways to advance the design of other parts that are hard to make with traditional manufacturing techniques, like lightweight structures that have improved cooling patterns. Discuss in the Siemens forum at 3DPB.com.

Siemens 44MW aerospace derived gas turbine for mobile power generation
Published on Fri, 24 Mar 2017

Equipment of this sort is a necessary and essential partner for the wind industry because it can provide power when the wind decides not to cooperate. Late last year, spot market power prices in Germany spiked to over €124/MWh because of high power demands and a lack of other reserves. The Siemens turbine could provide the new reserves.

The mobile unit is said to be an ideal choice for critical power needs. The package is built with durable industrial components capable of prolonged operation and demanding duties.

A product has been added to the Siemens gas turbine portfolio: The SGT-A45 TR mobile unit addresses the growing market for fast power. With an electrical generating capacity of up to 44 megawatts, this aeroderivative gas turbine is packaged for rapid deployment and can be installed in less than two weeks. Its design features outstanding power density, high fuel efficiency and excellent operational flexibility. This makes it particularly beneficial for customers with urgent power needs or in regions with less developed infrastructures.

This innovative mobile power generation unit from Siemens provides significantly more electrical output than comparable models currently on the market. This means that in most cases fewer turbine units are required to produce the total desired plant output. The SGT-A45 TR design is based on proven Siemens products and Rolls-Royce Aero-Engine technology. The gas turbine core utilizes components from the Siemens Industrial Trent 60 that have been adapted to a proven free power turbine. This design leverages the know-how and experience gained from millions of operating hours accumulated in flight, industrial and marine service.

The standardization and modular design of the package enable rapid deployment and installation. Each unit is fully assembled and tested at the factory in order to verify operation and performance and minimize the scope of commissioning work needed at site.

Transport of the gas turbine is facilitated by its compact design and relatively low weight. When required, the unit can be flown as air cargo to its installation site. The SGT-A45 TR gas turbine can run on gas or liquid fuels, and transition smoothly between both fuel types while in operation. This provides greater flexibility and ensures continued operation in case the main fuel supply becomes unavailable. Low NOx emissions can be achieved with optional water injection, which also boosts the unit’s power output particularly in warm climates.

The mobile unit is an ideal choice for critical power needs. The package is built with durable industrial components capable of prolonged operation and demanding duties. The aeroderivative gas turbine can generate full power in less than 9 minutes from start without need for auxiliary systems to maintain the unit in an operationally ready standby mode. In the event of a shutdown, the unit can be restarted at any time to restore power quickly, as it has no “hot lockout” restrictions.

Mr Nick Muntz, CEO of Siemens’ Distributed Generation business unit, said that “This innovative Siemens gas turbine will provide flexible and rapid supply of electricity, enabling it to quickly support critical power needs. The compact design of the SGT-A45 TR is especially well-suited for mobile power, for example in Africa or Southeast Asia, allowing us to capture a quickly growing market segment.”

'Treinfusie Siemens en Bombardier in de maak'

    Gepubliceerd op 11 apr 2017 om 16:11 | Views: 13

    Siemens 10 apr
    127,59 -0,71 (-0,55%)

Siemens is very bullish on the Indian growth story - Mr Mathur

In an exclusive interview with Mr Sudheer Pal Singh, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Sunil Mathur shares a perspective on the company's India growth strategy and the larger focus on digitalization to drive the next phase of growth across key verticals.

    Edited excerpts.
Q - What is the significance of the $520 million HVDC order just bagged from Powergrid?

A - This is a sequence order for setting up a transmission line starting from Pugalur in Tamil Nadu down to Kerala. This is a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project that bring power from North. It is a very prestigious project using a lot of first-time technologies.

The project has an increased local content. Here, we will work closely in consortium with Sumitomo and Siemens Germany. There is a Rs 1,700 crore onshore component which will be done by us. Sumitomo will do the entire cabling and Siemens Germany is supplying some of the offshore systems. The total value of the contract is around Rs 3,400 crore and Siemens Ltd has about 50 per cent of that.

HVDC is a critical technology to reduce transmission losses. The country desperately needs this.

For this project, Power Grid Corp (PGCIL) insisted on a much higher localised content. I think it is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make In India’. That is exactly what Siemens is also looking at.

So, we will deliver interface transformers, converters, and Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS) for the entire project from our factories in Mumbai and Goa.

Siemens says investigating reports its turbines sent to Crimea

Reuters quoted German firm Siemens as saying that it had set up a task force to investigate reports that its turbines had been delivered to Crimea for use in Russian-built power plants. A report by Reuters published on July 5 cited three sources with knowledge of the delivery as saying Russia had delivered electricity turbines made by Siemens to Crimea. Russia annexed the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, and the region is subject to European Union sanctions barring EU firms from supplying it with energy technology.

Siemens said in a statement that "We have no credible evidence about actual deliveries of our turbines to Crimea. However, we are taking these rumors seriously and have put in place a task force team to investigate the matter that is working diligently to clarify the facts."

Reuters was unable to determine if Siemens knew of or condoned the equipment transfer, but the move exposes the German company to potential accusations of indirect sanctions-busting and of not taking sufficient safeguards to ensure its equipment does not end up on territory most countries view as illegally annexed, say legal experts.

The company said that "If there were any re-routings of recently purchased turbines to Crimea, it would constitute a clear violation of contractual agreements. Siemens has repeatedly alerted its customer that Siemens complies with all export control restrictions."

It said that "Siemens has taken all possible legal and will take operational measures to prevent the equipment from being used in an unlawful way, e.g. it will not provide any deliveries or services for installation, commissioning support or warranty. We will continue to fully cooperate with all stakeholders."

Siemens Wind Power winding down operations, leaving 340 employees in Tillsonburg

The Globe and Mail reported that a wind-turbine-blade factory in Southwestern Ontario that Siemens Wind Power Ltd.’s former parent company called “a key part of our global supply chain” just last September is winding down operations, leaving 340 employees in Tillsonburg, Ont., without work by early next year. Employees found out about the impending shutdown at an all-staff meeting at the plant on Tuesday morning, and more than 200 lost their jobs immediately.

The Canadian-based wind-power company, formerly a part of the German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG, said falling prices, growing competition and changing demand forced its hand. Six years after the plant first opened as part of a provincewide effort to boost Ontario’s reputation as a renewable-energy hub, one of Tillsonburg’s biggest employers has become a casualty of continued growing pains faced by the wind-energy industry.

Siemens’s wind-energy division merged with Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica SA earlier this year to form Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA. The company called the closing a “difficult” decision undertaken after assessing all other options. It said employees would receive severance packages, that it would make career counselling and résumé preparation available to them, plus work with other companies to recruit the workers.

Mr David Hickey, Siemens Wind Power’s chief executive, said in a phone interview, said that “On one hand, it’s good news that the market is moving that fast and we’re competing with other energy sources, but I think the way renewables is progressing, it’s accelerating at a rate that I think very few people could plan for.”

Mr Hickey said that demand in Eastern Canada has fallen, and global competition has driven down prices by more than 66 per cent in the past seven years; that would make it untenable to ship turbine blades to farther markets. “The price pressure is constantly ongoing. It’s a very steep decline.”

Combined with this is growing demand for larger turbines – with blades bigger than the Tillsonburg facility can physically handle, Mr Hickey continued. “We can’t go any longer than 55 metres without significant investment,” he said, further noting the industry’s price pressures. The uncertain future of U.S. tax policy, he also said, has stifled US exports.
