   WOLFSBURG (AFN/DPA) - De coronacrisis is ongekend en zal zeker een negatief effect hebben op de activiteiten van het Duitse autoconcern Volkswagen. Daarvoor waarschuwde een topbestuurder van het bedrijf. Volkswagen heeft al aangekondigd de productie in Europa grotendeels stil te leggen in verband met de uitbraak van het virus.
   
   Financieel directeur Alexander Seitz van hoofdmerk Volkswagen zei dat alles wordt gedaan om de veiligheid van werknemers te garanderen en de zaken te stabiliseren. Er zijn bij het bedrijf al besmettingen geconstateerd. Hoe groot de impact van het virus uiteindelijk zal worden is nog moeilijk in te schatten, aldus Seitz.
   
   Vanaf donderdagavond gaan de meeste Europese fabrieken van Volkswagen voor minstens tien dagen dicht. Het bedrijf heeft ook te kampen met verstoringen van de toeleveringsketen, waardoor de productie onder druk komt te staan.

   Volkswagen Chattanooga Temporarily Suspends Production
   
   Effective Saturday, March 21 at 3:45 AM, Volkswagen Chattanooga will suspend production for one week, with current plans to resume production Sunday, March 29 at 10 PM. This action is being taken to help ensure the health and safety of our team members as we conduct additional sanitation and cleaning procedures throughout the factory. We will also use this time to assess future production plans and market developments. Volkswagen will offer full pay during this production shutdown period for all team members at the factory. Employees who are able to telework, such as office staff, will do so. We’re asking all employees to self-quarantine and maintain social distancing as directed by the CDC. We will continue to monitor the situation and will take any and all additional steps as they become necessary, communicating updates as they are available.
   
   The health and safety of our team remains our highest priority. In recent weeks we have taken the following precautionary steps:
   Implementing heightened sanitization and cleaning procedures throughout the factory as well as on our transportation shuttles
   Installing sanitation areas in high-traffic zones of the plant
   Provided all production, maintenance and production support staff with paid time off March 16 to plan and assess childcare needs in response to school closures
   Postponing all events at the Volkswagen Academy and Conference Center
   Implementing social distancing procedures in business-critical trainings, and postponing all non-critical training and classroom activities
   Closing general access to our onsite fitness center, and postponing all volunteer exercise classes
   Keeping doors open as much as possible to limit contact
   Limiting visitors to business-critical, and conducting safety screening questionnaires
   Prohibiting all business-related travel, domestic and international
   Sharing healthy best practices from the Center for Disease Control via internal communications channels
   Providing daily updates to all employees regarding our activities.

   Volkswagen Uses 3D Printing to Produce Face Shields for Coronavirus
   
   In response to the corona crisis, the Volkswagen Group has started to produce face shield holders by 3D printing. This is part of a joint transnational initiative with Airbus and the 3D printing network Mobility goes Additive, which includes about 250 companies. The products developed by Airbus will be used in Spain and will be flown from Hamburg to Madrid by Airbus, next week. This cross-industrial initiative was launched in response to requests from the Spanish authorities, which will also distribute the products in the country. The aim is to make as many holders as possible by then. In addition, there are a number of other initiatives by Volkswagen Group brands to produce medical supplies.
   
   A conventional plastic foil will be inserted into the holders by third parties now being produced by Volkswagen. With these shields, the entire face will be covered by transparent protection. In order to ensure the highest possible standards of hygiene, Volkswagen employees producing the holders will wear gloves and face masks. Gerd Walker, Head of Volkswagen Group Production, said: “Our team is already working at full speed to make these urgently needed parts as quickly as possible.” Production is in progress not only at the large 3D printing centers in Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt, but also at other plants of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, MAN Truck & Bus, Porsche, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Volkswagen Group Components and Volkswagen Motorsport. The Group currently uses more than 50 3D printers at its plants continuously adding additional printers for this project.
   
   Lamborghini, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen Passenger Cars are also working on other medical supplies: Volkswagen Navarra (Spain) has already started last week to produce face shields and has handed about 1,000 units to the Navarra Government. In collaboration with the Technical University in Prague, ŠKODA has developed a 3D printing process to produce reusable FFP3 respirators. The Czech Ministry of Health is now distributing these to doctors, hospitals and nursing staff. Lamborghini is converting departments of its super sports car production plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese in order to produce surgical masks and protective plexiglass shields. The masks will be donated to a hospital in Bologna. SEAT is currently working on several initiatives to collaborate, including the production of a mechanical ventilator that will be assembled in Martorell and various models of face maskswhich are still pending official approval. Volkswagen South Africa is also printing masks and face shields which are pending official approval.

   WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Automaker Volkswagen weet nog niet of het overgaat tot uitbetaling van 3,3 miljard euro aan dividend. Door de coronacrisis neigt het Duitse bedrijf ernaar om een deel van de centen te behouden om eventuele tegenvallers mee op te kunnen vangen.
   
   Financieel directeur Frank Witter van Volkswagen legde eerder aan personeel uit dat beleggers recht hebben op dividend, en dat er teleurstelling zou heersen op het moment dat deze betaling wordt opgeschort. Maar door de crisis moet de automaker ook aan zijn kaspositie denken, waarmee het schrappen van de beloning toch weer als optie op tafel ligt.
   
   Verschillende andere grote bedrijven hebben eerder al hun dividendbetalingen geschrapt, verlaagd of opgeschort. Alleen al in Noord-Amerika en Europa ging een streep door ruim 51 miljard euro aan uitkeringen aan aandeelhouders. Verder zou alleen in West-Europa al bijna 37 miljard euro aan betalingen zijn opgeschort.
   
   Volkswagen zegt in een reactie dat het de situatie nauwlettend in de gaten houdt. Bij Porsche Automobil Holding, het investeringsvehikel van de Porsche en Piech-familie, dat de controle heeft over de grootste automaker ter wereld, weigerden ze commentaar te geven. De winst van Volkswagen en de dividenduitkering zijn de enige significante inkomstenbronnen van de houdstermaatschappij.

   Bijna tien mille bonus voor alle 27.000 Porsche-medewerkers
   
   Ondanks een daling van de winst en de huidige coronacrisis, geeft sportwagenfabrikant Porsche dit jaar opnieuw een bonus van 9700 euro aan alle medewerkers. Tesla gaat zijn personeel daarentegen minder loon betalen.

   Vanwege de coronapandemie is Porsche momenteel vleugellam. Er worden even geen auto’s geproduceerd. Desondanks koos Porsche ervoor om - net als vorig jaar - een bonus uit te keren van 9700 euro. Het gaat om 9000 euro direct en 700 euro als bijdrage aan de oudedagsvoorziening. Wel vroeg de directie aan de ongeveer 27.000 werknemers om een ??deel van het geld te doneren aan non-profitorganisaties vanwege de coronacrisis.

   Omzetrecord
   Dankzij sterke verkoopcijfers sloot de sportwagenfabrikant het afgelopen jaar af met een nieuw omzetrecord van 28,5 miljard euro. Aan de andere kant maakte een boete van 535 miljoen euro in de sjoemeldieselaffaire een einde aan de recordwinst van tien jaar op rij. Onder de streep bleef een winst over van ongeveer 2,8 miljard euro. Dat is 317 miljoen euro - oftewel zo’n tien procent - minder dan in het voorgaande jaar, zo meldt de Stuttgarter Zeitung.

   Tesla betaalt het personeel vanaf aanstaande maandag juist minder loon uit. De fabrikant zegt gedwongen te worden tot deze maatregel omdat fabrieken zijn gesloten of op halve kracht draaien. Dat melden bronnen op basis van een intern memo. Topmanagers gaan dertig procent terug in salaris, bedrijfsleiders vallen twintig procent terug qua inkomsten en het overige personeel levert tien procent in. Ook stuurt het bedrijf van Elon Musk een aantal medewerkers met onbetaald verlof.

   Volkswagen Reports Signs of Business Recovery in China
   
   Volkswagen Group China’s operations are showing clear signs of business recovery. All 2,000 Volkswagen brand dealerships are now open again, with showroom traffic during the last weekend of March comparable to the same period last year. Over 95% of the dealerships of the other locally producing brands Audi and ŠKODA have also reopened. The SAIC VOLKSWAGEN joint venture plant in Changsha also resumed operations this week. The total number of Group facilities that have resumed operations has thus risen to 32 of the 33 car and component plants. Volkswagen Group China CEO Stephan Wöllenstein said “Our dealerships are seeing customers on the showroom floors once again. There are growing signs of recovery, with a good chance that the Chinese car market could reach last year’s level in early summer. For Volkswagen, many highlights are still to come in 2020. This year MEB production will begin and the Volkswagen ID. family will debut in China.”
   
   In the second half of the year, Volkswagen Group China will reach major milestones in its electrification strategy for the Chinese market. Two plants will begin local production of all-electric models based on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive toolkit. The sites in Anting and Foshan will have a combined capacity of 600,000 units per year. Following the start of this production, Volkswagen ID Models, a family of fully-electric, fully-connected Volkswagen cars, will then debut in China. Additionally, local production of Audi’s e-tron will get underway in Changchun at the end of the year.

   Volkswagen wil Duitse fabrieken op 27 april openen
   
   (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Volkswagen is van plan om zijn fabrieken in Duitsland op 27 april weer te openen, circa een week later dan aanvankelijk gepland. Dit meldde The Wall Street Journal woensdag op basis van bronnen.
   
   Afgelopen maand sloot Volkswagen tijdelijk de meeste Europese fabrieken vanwege de coronacrisis, waardoor ook de productie van andere Volkswagen-merken stil kwam te liggen, waaronder Audi, Porsche en Skoda.
   
   Volkswagen had zich als doel gesteld om op 20 april de productie weer op te starten, maar volgens The Wall Street Journal wordt dit nu 27 april.
   
   Het bestuur van Volkswagen en vakbondsvertegenwoordigers zouden afgelopen week een uitgebreid plan hebben opgesteld met maatregelen om de veiligheid onder werknemers te waarborgen en om te voorkomen dat het virus uitbreekt op de werkvloer. Tot dusver hebben wereldwijd circa honderd fabriekswerkers van Volkswagen het virus opgelopen.
   
   Hoewel de fabrieken van Volkswagen gesloten bleven, werden er elders nog wel componenten geproduceerd, om ervoor te zorgen dat de fabrieken straks genoeg onderdelen hebben om de productie weer op te starten.

   WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Automaker Volkswagen verwacht vanwege de coronacrisis in het eerste kwartaal een lagere omzet te behalen dan een jaar terug. Het autoconcern, dat zijn productie in China en Europa in de periode tijdelijk moest stilleggen door de pandemie, wijst naar de lagere vraag naar auto's en problemen in de toeleveringsketen.
   
   Volkswagen denkt vorig kwartaal een omzet van 55 miljard euro te hebben gedraaid. Een jaar terug was dat ruim 60 miljard euro. De klap voor de winstgevendheid zal nog sterker zijn, mede veroorzaakt door ongunstige ontwikkelingen in wisselkoersen en wilde schommelingen van grondstofprijzen. De operationele winst keldert naar verwachting van Volkswagen tot 900 miljoen euro. Vorig jaar bedroeg de operationele winst nog 3,9 miljard euro.
   
   Voor het hele jaar trekt Volkswagen zijn eerder afgegeven vooruitzichten in. Die kunnen niet meer worden gehaald, aldus het Duitse concern. Het is daarbij nog te vroeg om te zeggen wanneer wel een nieuwe jaarprognose kan worden gegeven. Volkswagen benadrukt dat de onzekerheid vanwege de pandemie nauwkeurige voorspellingen in de weg zit.
   
   Volkswagen is van plan om vanaf volgende week zijn productie in meerdere fabrieken weer te herstarten. De voorzichtige versoepeling van lockdowns in Europa geven het concern weer wat hoop.

    Audi Production Gradually Restarts in Europe
    
    Audi will gradually initiate the restart of production at its plants in Europe during the coming weeks. In mid-March, the company announced the temporary suspension of production at its European sites. The background to the decision was supply bottlenecks and a drop in demand due to the corona pandemic. The upcoming regulated restart in the worldwide Audi production network together with suppliers and service providers will be coordinated with the Volkswagen Group. The main component of the restart is a comprehensive package of measures that focuses on the safety of employees. In this respect, Audi is following the guidelines of the Robert Koch Institute and the regulations of the health authorities of the respective country. Following the suspension of production at all AUDI AG plants in Europe, it is now a matter of taking the first step back towards normality
    
    Managers of production sections and groups, together with experts from occupational safety, health care, industrial engineering and the works council, have looked at each individual workplace, analyzed it and developed suggestions for improvement. Only with the agreement of all those involved is a workplace considered“corona-ready. The workgroup also took a close look at the working environment: group spaces, factory gates, parking spaces and internal factory traffic, as well as catering and factory restaurants. Audi has developed appropriate solutions for all areas. The employees will be informed in writing about these measures in advance and will receive comprehensive safety instructions from their line managers when they restart their work, as well as regular updates in internal online media and through numerous information notices at the plants.
    
    Comprehensive safety precautions and modified work regulations also apply at office workplaces. For example, there is the possibility of working from home in order to minimize the risk of infection. Above all, however, the restart affects the employees in the area of production.
    
    Vehicle production at the Audi sites will be gradually ramped up from the end of April onwards according to a fixed plan. Engine production in Gyor already started gradually ramping up again this week. For those employees at the factories in Germany who will only be able to resume their work fully in later phases of the restart, short-time working regulations will continue to apply until then.

    ZWICKAU (AFN/DPA) - Volkswagen heeft de productie van zijn auto's in thuisland Duitsland donderdag weer hervat. Vanwege de uitbraak en de verspreiding van het nieuwe coronavirus hield het bedrijf de deuren van zijn fabrieken wekenlang gesloten. In Zwickau, waar elektrische auto's van het merk geassembleerd worden, werden donderdag de productiebanden na een onderbreking van vijf weken weer opgestart.
    
    De fabriek draait vooralsnog op halve kracht, verduidelijkte de automaker. De veiligheid van het personeel gaat volgens de onderneming voor alles. Dagelijks zullen er vijftig voertuigen van de band rollen, een derde van wat normaal aan auto's in elkaar wordt gezet op die locatie.
    
    De elektrische ID.3 wordt sinds november in de fabriek in Zwickau gebouwd. Hoewel de lancering eind 2019 werd vertraagd, onder meer als gevolg van softwareproblemen en het tijdelijk stilleggen van de fabriek, zullen volgens planning in de zomer 100.000 elektrische voertuigen zijn gebouwd in Zwickau.
    
    Volkswagen kondigde eerder al aan dat het deze week van plan is om zijn productie in meerdere fabrieken weer te herstarten. De voorzichtige versoepeling van lockdowns in Europa geven het concern weer wat hoop dat er betere tijden aankomen.

    WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Volkswagen heeft in de eerste drie maanden van het jaar bijna een kwart minder auto's afgeleverd dan een jaar eerder. Het nieuwe coronavirus en maatregelen om de virusuitbraak in te dammen raakten de verkopen van de autofabrikant op verschillende vlakken. Zo moest het concern veel van zijn fabrieken sluiten en waren veel dealers gesloten.
    
    In totaal leverde Volkswagen 2 miljoen voertuigen af, 23 procent minder dan in het eerste kwartaal van 2019. Dat leidde tot een omzetdaling van ruim 8 procent tot 55,1 miljard euro. De operationele winst kelderde met meer dan 81 procent tot 900 miljoen euro.
    
    Volkswagen voerde wegens de coronacrisis verschillende kostenbesparingen door. De financiële positie is volgens het concern nog sterk, mede dankzij maatregelen om de liquiditeit te versterken. Onlangs was er ook goed nieuws voor de automaker. Zijn fabriek in thuisstad Wolfsburg start deze week geleidelijk weer op, nadat productielocaties in het Slowaakse Bratislava en het Duitse Zwickau vorige week weer begonnen te draaien. Daarnaast verwacht Volkswagen over heel 2020 een operationele winst te boeken, maar wel een veel lager resultaat.

    WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Topbestuurders van Volkswagen hebben een schikking getroffen in een Duitse rechtszaak wegens het dieselschandaal bij de automaker. Topman Herbert Diess en president-commissaris Hans Dieter Pötsch betalen ieder 4,5 miljoen euro om vervolging wegens misleiding van aandeelhouders te voorkomen.
    
    Openbaar aanklagers in Duitsland beschuldigden de twee bestuurders ervan te laat beleggers te hebben geïnformeerd over een Amerikaans onderzoek naar gesjoemel met uitstootwaarden van dieselauto's. In 2015 gaf het bedrijf toe met behulp van illegale software vals te hebben gespeeld bij emissietesten.
    
    Justitie in Duitsland klaagde Diess en Pötsch vorig jaar aan voor marktmanipulatie. De raad van commissarissen van Volkswagen stelt nu, na onderzoek van eigen juristen, dat de twee niets verkeerd hebben gedaan. Het bedrijf is daarom van plan de bestuurders te compenseren voor hun boete.
    
    Achterhouden
    
    Ook de voormalige topman van Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, werd aangeklaagd wegens het achterhouden van informatie voor beleggers. Het Duitse persbureau DPA meldt op basis van ingewijden dat ook die zaak snel tot een einde kan worden gebracht. Winterkorn, die kort na het uitkomen van het dieselschandaal aftrad, wordt door de Duitse justitie ook beschuldigd van ernstige fraude. Tot een rechtszaak is het nog niet gekomen, omdat rechters twijfels hebben over de geldigheid van enkele beschuldigingen.
    
    Door het gesjoemel van Volkswagen leken miljoenen dieselauto's minder vervuilend dan ze waren. Het schandaal heeft het autoconcern, waar ook merken als Audi en Skoda onder vallen, inmiddels zo'n 30 miljard euro aan boetes en schadevergoedingen gekost.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Volkswagen moet een automobilist die het slachtoffer is van de dieselaffaire compenseren. Dit oordeelde het Duitse Bundesgerichtshof maandag.
    
    De Duitse rechtbank verklaarde dat de door Volkswagen gedupeerde automobilist recht heeft op een schadevergoeding. De Volkswagen die hij kocht bleek gemanipuleerd met het oog op een emissietest.
    
    Met deze uitspraak op zak zullen vermoedelijk ook andere bezitters van een 'sjoemeldiesel' van Volkswagen zich melden voor een compensatie.

    WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - De Duitse automaker Volkswagen is een samenwerking aangegaan op het gebied van de ontwikkeling van zelfrijdende auto's met de door branchegenoot Ford gesteunde start-up Argo AI. De deal maakt onderdeel uit van een bredere alliantie tussen VW en Ford om gezamenlijk autonome en elektrische voertuigen te ontwikkelen. Dit partnerschap werd in juli vorig jaar aangekondigd.
    
    De investering van Volkswagen van in totaal 2,6 miljard dollar omvat een directe kapitaalinjectie van 1 miljard dollar. Verder wordt het onderdeel van Volkswagen dat zich bezighoudt met autonome technologie te waarde van 1,6 miljard dollar ondergebracht bij Argo.
    
    Door de overeenkomst kunnen Volkswagen en Ford zich bij de ontwikkeling van autonoom rijden gaan meten met leidende initiatieven als Waymo van Alphabet en Cruise van General Motors. Argo zal door de krachtenbundeling wereldwijd meer dan duizend werknemers tellen. Daarbij kan het gebruik gaan maken van de testfaciliteit in München.
    
    Plannen van Ford om volgend jaar robot-taxi's en bezorgvoertuigen zonder chauffeur te lanceren werden door de coronacrisis op de lange baan geschoven. De automaker is van plan om de technologie van Argo in 2022 te gaan gebruiken. Dat Ford de ontwikkelingskosten voor autonoom rijden nu met Volkswagen kan delen, betekent overigens niet dat Ford zijn geplande uitgaven voor de ontwikkeling voor autonome voertuigen verlaagt.

    Volkswagen Chattanooga Produces One-Millionth Vehicle
    
    Volkswagen announced that it achieved a key production milestone at its Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly plant with the completion of its one-millionth vehicle, an Aurora Red Metallic 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line. The Volkswagen Chattanooga plant has been producing Passat vehicles since 2011. Ground was broken in 2009 for what was to become the world’s first LEED-Platinum certified manufacturing facility. Since, Volkswagen Chattanooga has grown to employ approximately 3,800 people, produced more than 700,000 Passat vehicles, 100,000 Atlas vehicles, and recently started production of the 2020 Atlas Cross Sport and the facelifted 2021 Atlas. In that time, Chattanooga-assembled vehicles have been exported to Canada, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, and the Middle East.
    
    Volkswagen Chattanooga will also be Volkswagen’s North American base for manufacturing electric vehicles, representing an approximately $800 million investment, starting in 2022. The expansion to enable U.S. production of long-range EVs began in November 2019.
    
    The Passat marked Volkswagen’s return to assembling vehicles in America, after the Westmoreland facility in Pennsylvania closed in 1987. The 2012 Passat was specifically designed for the North American market—larger than the European vehicle, in order to offer the kind of interior and trunk space that North American buyers expect from a midsize sedan.
    
    Nine years later, building on the success of the current generation’s combination of copious amounts of interior space, creature comforts and Volkswagen’s signature fun-to-drive nature, the 2020 Passat offers more than its predecessor of what matters—bolder design, upgraded technology, and enhanced access to convenience and driver-assistance features.
    
    The 2020 Passat is available in four trim levels, with a starting price of $22,995 for the Passat S. A 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four-cylinder engine that makes 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission on all models. Standard features include 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, full LED lighting, App-Connect, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist), Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Ford en Volkswagen bundelen hun krachten op het gebied van autonoom rijden, elektrisch aangedreven voertuigen en bedrijfsvoertuigen na vorig jaar juli al te hebben aangekondigd met elkaar samen te gaan werken. Dit maakten de twee autofabrikanten woensdag bekend zonder financiële details te vermelden.
    
    Het is de bedoeling dat Ford een zogeheten medium pickup truck bouwt die door Volkswagen in de markt wordt gezet. Verder worden de al bestaande samenwerkingsactiviteiten op het gebied van bedrijfsvoertuigen in 2021 geïntensiveerd. Dit moet leiden tot een stadswagen. Voor Ford zijn vanaf 2023 elektrische auto's voor de Europese markt in de planning opgenomen, die gebouwd worden op basis van de zogeheten Modular Electric Drive van Volkswagen.
    
    De fabrikanten mikken op een productie van 8 miljoen bedrijfsvoertuigen.
    
    In de elektronische handel voorbeurs noteerde het aandeel Ford 0,6 procent hoger. De koers van het aandeel Volkswagen ging in Frankfurt met 1,8 procent omlaag.

    Volkswagen Ships Cars to US in LNG Powered MV SIEM CONFUCIUS
    
    For the first time, vehicles from Europe will be transported from Europe to North and Central America on a car freighter powered by liquefied natural gas. On Tuesday evening the SIEM CONFUCIUS with more than 4,800 vehicles for North America left Emden for Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico. The LNG drive reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 30 percent, soot particles by up to 60 percent and sulphur oxide emissions by up to 100 percent.
    
    Like her sister ship, which is expected to enter service this year, the technologically ultramodern SIEM CONFUCIUS, which is 200 metres long and 38 metres wide, has 13 car decks and a capacity of 7,500 Car Equivalent Unit, which corresponds to around 4,800 vehicles in the Volkswagen Group model mix from passenger cars to light commercial vehicles. The ships are powered by 12,600 kW dual-fuel marine engines with direct injection and exhaust gas after treatment from MAN Energy Solutions. In eco-speed mode they travel at a speed of 16.5 knots. The two tanks in each ship, each holding 1,800 cubic metres, are sufficient to cover the entire distance with the fuel stowed in Europe. In addition to liquid, deep-frozen natural gas, the car carriers could also be operated with biogas or E-gas from regenerative sources.
    
    Volkswagen Group Logistics organizes, coordinates and is responsible for around 7,700 ship departures worldwide every year. Several hundred liners and eleven car freighter charter ships, two of which are now being replaced by the LNG units, sail the world’s oceans for the Group every day.     Volkswagen Chattanooga Plant Assembly Line in Wolfsburg Hit One-Millionth Vehicle Milestone
    
    Volkswagen of America’s Chattanooga plant assembly line in Wolfsburg hit one-millionth vehicle milestone last week. Following World War II, the Volkswagen factory started slowly producing the Beetle and the Bus, but by 1955 the Beetle was on its way to becoming one of the best-selling vehicles ever. To celebrate the moment, the lucky one-millionth Beetle was painted gold, with bumpers lined in rhinestones. The car rolled off the assembly line in a celebration with nearly 150,000 people joining in for the festivities. The golden, one-millionth Beetle now makes its home in Wolfsburg’s AutoStadt Museum.
    
    Worldwide popularity of the Beetle led Volkswagen to open its first plant in Mexico in 1967, in Puebla, southeast of Mexico City. From there, Volkswagen began building Beetles that quickly became known as the “vocho” in Mexico. While sales in the United States ended in the 1970s, the original Beetle remained a popular and economical choice in Mexico. In September 1980, a red Beetle marked the one-millionth vehicle produced at the factory, with a celebration that gathered Mexican government officials, Volkswagen executives, local business partners, and hundreds of employees together. The original Beetle would remain in production there until 2003.
    
    Eight years later, in May 2011, the first Volkswagen assembled in Chattanooga – an all-new Passat sedan – rolled off the production line. It’s taken just nine years for the Chattanooga factory to produce its one-millionth vehicle, with more than 800,000 Passat, 100,000 Atlas vehicles, and thousands of the recently launched 5-seater Atlas Cross Sport vehicles.
    
    The Chattanooga plant will also be Volkswagen’s North American base for assembling electric vehicles, with the ID.4 SUV slated as the plant’s first electric model. The next million vehicles out of Chattanooga will be quite different than the milestone vehicles that have come before.
