Researchers Study Corrosion in Laser Printed 316L Stainless Steel

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Jan, 2022, 4:30 am

Additive manufacturing is widely employed in materials fabrication, but it causes changes in microstructural features that can affect the material’s chemical composition and the quality and durability of the finished product. Laser-based additive manufacturing processes have a layer-by-layer action that causes the formation of highly heterogeneous microstructures. Another aspect of the process that causes this is rapid solidification due to large thermal gradients. Rapid solidification leads to high-density dislocations in steel that are vital for the aerospace, maritime, and vehicle industries. A research paper published in the journal Additive Manufacturing considers how the properties of stainless steel are affected by laser additive printing methods. Print orientation demonstrating the recoater direction relative to the gas flow; samples for this study were extracted from the columns, which had systematic variations in the printing speed.

Common features in industrial-grade steels manufactured with processes such as laser powder-bed fusion are macroscale fusion boundaries and solidification structures, and nanoscale sub-grain cellular structures. The cellular dislocation networks produced have implications for the overall quality and mechanical properties of finished steels. Some specific microstructural features of interest include multiscale interfaces, irregular surface chemistry, and bulk chemical heterogeneities. Microstructural features are intrinsically intertwined and lead to physical effects such as decreased corrosion resistance, which has implications for structural integrity and longevity of the additively manufactured steels. Defects can lead to the creation of surface electrochemical cells which cause localized corrosion (such as crevice corrosion and pitting) as well as general surface corrosion. The processes that lead to deleterious effects are complex and require intensive research to overcome.

Understanding microstructural defects and their effects on the chemical structure is necessary to elucidate the potential effects of additive manufacturing on the final product. The team behind the research used several multimodal analytical techniques to achieve the conclusions in the study. 316L powder was used to additively print the sample stainless steel. The system used was a Renishaw AM 250. The primary variable was scan speed, at 550, 650, and 700 mm/s, respectively. The samples produced were 25mm cylindrical rods. Five-millimeter sections were removed for analysis and corrosion measurements.

Laser printed additive manufactured stainless-steel specimens were analyzed with synchrotron x-ray diffraction, imaging techniques, spectroscopic techniques, and TEM. The specimens were L-PBF 316L stainless steels which were printed at different raster speeds. Chemical, atomic, and microstructural information on the fabricated steel was elucidated via analytical techniques. Stitched bright-field TEM micrographs of a selected region containing two adjacent grains near a melt pool boundary on the L-PBF 316L sample printed at 700 mm/s showing the underlying cellular dislocation network. Corresponding selected area diffraction patterns are shown in i and ii.

One of the main results of the study was the implications of defects in microstructure on corrosion behavior of the finished steel product. Corrosion resistance in 316L steel grades is due to the Cr promoting the formation of a bipolar passive film. This film is comprised of an inner Cr2O3 barrier layer and an outer layer that is enriched with metal oxyanions. This forms an electrokinetic barrier that prevents anions from entering.

Microstructural features that are produced during additive manufacturing can prevent the ability of a salute to contribute to passive film layer formation. Some studies on duplex stainless steel using synchrotron methods and electrochemical polarization experiments indicated that there is a correlation between alloy surface structure and nanoscale compositional heterogeneities. These heterogeneities influence passivity behavior such as a breakdown in passivity.

Studies have also indicated that there is a strong correlation between pitting formation and surface defects at the nanoscale. Knowing the nature of defect formation at the nanoscale will help to inform manufacturing strategies that strengthen additive printed stainless steel (and other materials) against the risk of corrosion.

India Plans to Use of Stainless Steel in Bridges near Sea

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    05 Jan, 2022, 5:28 am

Times of India reported that India’s Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Mr Nitin Gadkari, while releasing a book titled “Building Bridges”, which captures how his ministry undertook the task of setting up Indian Bridge Management System, hinted that the Indian Government may bring a policy making the use of stainless steel mandatory in bridges in areas that are close to the sea. He said “In localities like Mumbai and other areas close to the sea there is a common problem of rusting of the steel and that reduces strength of buildings and bridges. We may have to make a law that in areas within 30-50 km of a sea, we need to use only stainless steel. Rusting is a big problem. We also need to carry out more studies to find solutions.”

The minister also said that there is a dire need to fix the life or expiry date of bridges; carry out timely repair, but that’s possible only when there is data on the status of the bridge and for this we need to have proper audit reports.

He added that now because of Indian Bridge Management System, his ministry has basic data of nearly 172,000 bridges and there is need to improve this to get desired results.

    28 Jan, 2022, 5:25 am

Danieli Centro Combustion announced the startup of a fully electrical soaking furnace for long products led to full operations in four weeks at Fagersta Stainless in Sweden. The Danieli Centro Combustion design maintains and equalizes billet temperature between induction heater reheating furnace and rolling mill. To achieve the process requirement, and at the same time pursue the ambitious target of decarbonization, the furnace is fully powered by electrical resistance. The resistance coils developed and tested in Danieli Research Center are installed along the entire length of the furnace roof and walls maintain the furnace chamber at temperatures up to 1250 degree Celsius, which was never reached before with this heating system. Despite the high temperatures dry rolls are installed, and this further reduces energy consumption by the soaking furnace.

Temperature control is performed through a silicon-controlled rectifier that allows very accurate zone-temperature tuning. In addition, the insulation system mainly composed by fiber, guarantees low inertia and high reactivity of the furnace, capable to heat up and cool down quickly with 200 degree Celsius per hour gradients, and maintain constantly the desired temperature with great accuracy plus/minus 2,5 degree Celsius, resulting in high flexibility.

The furnace was engineered, manufactured and assembled on site in 7 months following order signature, to meet customer requirement to make it operational at Summer stoppage.

    11 Mar, 2022, 5:19 am

European Steel Association EUROFER has called on the London Metal Exchange & the Financial Conduct Authority to take the necessary action to resolve the massive, artificial fluctuations in nickel prices and impose the indispensable measures to ensure it does not reoccur. EUROFER has also requested for a commitment on transparency on moves by single or group of market participants exceeding regular participation and trading limits. EUROFER Director General Mr Axel Eggert said “In the last days, and since markets opened on 7 March in particular, we have seen an unprecedented surge in nickel prices that cannot be explained by supply and demand, nor by the sanctions recently imposed on Russia, no other commodity has seen the same price increase as nickel in recent days. These massive fluctuations in the nickel market can seriously impact both the European nickel users and consumers, eventually leading to job losses, and jeopardize the EU green transition.”

Mr Eggert warned “This is not the first time that such market anomalies occur. Already in the summer of 2019 there was a similar situation of possible market manipulation by a specific player. It is of utmost importance to solve this issue once for all so we do not see this happening a third time.”

EUROFER requests the LME to keep the market closed until stability and normal price levels are restored. It also requests a thorough investigation of the trading practices by some market players to determine whether they may constitute market abuse or the creation of a disorderly market, or another prohibited practice.

Nickel is an essential element of the low carbon economy: stainless steel alone represents over 70% of its consumption, followed by the batteries sector.

ALPOLIC/fr Titanium Composite Material, a composite panel of titanium, resin and stainless steel of Mitsubishi Chemical Infratec Co Ltd, has been adopted for the roof of the Yangtze River International Conference Center ALPOLIC/fr TCM contains the designing titanium TranTixxii of Nippon Steel Corporation and NSSC220M, a high corrosion resistance ferritic stainless steel sheet of NIPPON STEEL Stainless Steel Corporation. In this particular project, TCM was applied to an area of 47,000 square meters, 71 tonnes of titanium & 130 tonnes of stainless steel). ALPOLIC/fr TCM is a titanium composite panel that contains titanium on its surface. It features titanium's characteristic refined design and excellent corrosion resistance. The composite panel is smoother than pure titanium panels and achieves reduced application weight. ALPOLIC/fr TCM has a fire retardant core, making it suitable for building exteriors and roofs.

While titanium is as strong as steel, the former's specific gravity is less than those of other types of building metal, thus achieving thinner and lighter applications. This helps mitigate the transportation and operational load, reducing the CO2 emissions.

NSSC220M is stable in price since it is a resource saving stainless steel that contains little nickel. In addition, it has higher corrosion resistance than SUS316 (austenitic stainless steel), which is a generic-grade of high corrosion resistance stainless steel. Furthermore, NSSC220M is almost the same as titanium in linear expansion coefficient, meaning that this stainless steel material prevents panel distortion caused by temperature and environmental changes.

The Yangtze River International Conference Center is a landmark of Jiangbei New District, which is an up and coming growing city. While it’s refined design has earned TCM opportunities to be featured in other projects in China, the eco-friendly optimal panel design based on Building Information Modeling proposed by Mitsubishi Chemical Infratec added momentum to the decision to select this product for the latest project. Thanks to their high corrosion resistance, the titanium and stainless steel contained in TCM do not require coating, thus saving maintenance work. Moreover, very few metal ions are eluted from their surfaces, making them recyclable and thus more eco-friendly.

Company’s exports sales proportion doubled to 32% of sales volumes in Q4 of FY 2021-22 as compared to 16% Q4 of FY 2020-21. The domestic market continued to be marred by cheap stainless steel imports from China and Indonesia in Q4FY22. Domestic demand increased in segments like lifts and elevators and railways. However, demand in consumer facing segments like hollowware and pipe and tubes remained muted due to channel de-stocking, owing to increase in raw material prices.
