Hoa Sen’s Chairman Mr Vu to Become Buddhist Monk in 2026

VN Express reported that Vietnam’s Hoa Sen Group Founder & Chairman 58 year old Mr Le Phuoc Vu has said he will remain involved with the operations of the steel giant until he enters monastic life in 2026. At Hoa Sen Group’s recent annual general meeting, Mr Vu denied rumors he was no longer involved with the operations of the company that began after he attended a ceremony to take refuge in the Three Jewels last July. He told "Though I stay up in the mountains and return once a month, I do not miss anything in the operation of the company. This also helps his executives learn to manage the company on their own. A good leader does not only help a company grow but also nurtures the next generation of leaders. All procurement contracts still have to be personally approved by him since he has not entrusted this responsibility to other executives just yet. Every day he calls vice chairman Mr Tran Ngoc Chu to discuss and direct operations.”

He said he plans to quit the company in 2026 to become a monk but until then would work closely with its board and find a successor before then. He said "I will most definitely leave home after that, and live the virtuous life of a Buddhist practitioner. I will leave when I have fulfilled my responsibilities, not because I want to cash out."

When one becomes a monk by leaving home, people shave off their hair, declare their commitment to Buddhism, renounce one’s family and worldly life to diligently practice Buddhism in a purer place such as a pagoda.

Mr Vu also announced that the company would no longer focus on manufacturing corrugated iron, steel and plastic pipes, but move towards becoming a distributor of building materials and interior decoration items.

Hoa Sen Group is a steel roofing sheet manufacturing company. It manufactures and distributes building material products in Vietnam. The company's product portfolio includes cold rolled coil, aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheets, galvanized steel sheets, pre-painted galvanized steel sheets, pre-painted aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheets, pre-painted GL and pre-painted GI with PVDF, and wood pattern steel sheets. In addition, it also produces steel purlins, galvanized purlins, manufactures black steel pipes, galvanized steel pipes and other alloys, steel mesh, galvanized steel wire, steel wire, PVC ceiling and manufacturing and trading of plastic building materials.

Policy Changes Proposed to Increaes Iron Ore Production in India

Financial Express reported that India’s ministry of mines has proposed to adopt a carrot and stick policy, to spur iron ore production. Through the proposed Minerals (other than atomic and hydrocarbons energy minerals) Concession (Amendment) Rules, 2021, the ministry has proposed that the mining lessee will still have to pay statutory dues equal to the minimum dispatch stipulated in a quarter even if dispatch falls short. In case, the lessee fails to maintain the minimum dispatch criteria for three consecutive quarters, the state government may terminate such lease after giving a reasonable opportunity of being heard.

The mines ministry has also planned to incentivise a lessee for higher production. The mines ministry has proposed the Mineral (Auction) Amendment Rules, 2021 “For fully explored blocks, there would be a 50% rebate in the quoted revenue share, for the quantity of mineral produced and dispatched earlier than the scheduled date of production as provided in the tender document.”

Keeping in mind the fact that leases granted for around 334 merchant mines including 46 operating mines will stand cancelled on March 2020, the mines ministry had allowed auction of such leases even before their lease period got over and granted the new owners permission to operate such leases without acquiring the required approvals and clearances for two years. Still, several successful bidders of those working mines failed to start production even after the lapse of 7-8 months of auction and execution of mining leases in their favour. Further, many of the successful bidders who have started production, have not maintained the production and dispatch quantity up to the stipulated level.

Japan Plans to Support Steel Sector to Cut Emission

Nikkei reported that Japanese government plans to support heavy industry to raise capital for investments that cut carbon emissions, an area that has struggled to attract funding compared with big renewable energy projects and the government will set guidelines to allow the sale of bonds and other financial products for climate transition projects, with an eye toward areas such as steel, chemicals, electricity and maritime shipping.

Japanese government hopes that this will attract cash from environmentally conscious investors who tend to steer clear of smokestack industries. Though so called green bonds have gained traction as a way to raise money for environmental projects, just 0.5% of these bonds worldwide have been issued by the industrial sector.

One priority for funding is industries that cannot jump to zero emissions in the near future. The International Capital Market Association issued guidance on climate transition finance last month with these sectors in mind. Japan will use this report as the core of its guidelines.

China May Resort to Semis Import to Cut Crude Steel Output in 2021

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, committed to reducing China’s crude steel output in 2021 from record 1.05 billion tonnes in 202 to achieve carbon emission targets, has recently released a series of measures to accelerate the reduction of steel output which includes a ban on illegal additions of new capacity, bolstering its guidance on capacity swaps & push for mergers & restructuring the steel industry to solve long term issues around competition, unreasonable resource allocation and weak synergies. Similarly, China Iron and Steel Association is advancing a series of carbon emission reduction programs to help fulfil China's commitment to green development and has set up a new committee to lead efforts aimed at carbon emission reduction planning, research and development of carbon emission reduction techniques and setting carbon emission reduction regulation policies. However, according to the CISA steel demand in China in 2021 will likely rise slightly amid the steady development of the economy and steel exports are unlikely to improve much, while imports will increase. CISA’s vice chairman Mr Luo Tiejun told a briefing that higher demand this year could be met by other means. He said “We can strengthen imports of primary steel products, especially billets, so that rising demand can be met without increasing output. The government is planning to roll out favourable policies to encourage such imports.”

CISA has also suggested improving steel scrap related policies to take advantage of resources at home after China allowed imports of high grade scrap in 2021.

China, the country with the largest level of carbon emissions in the world, promised to become carbon neutral before 2060. Its steel industry is responsible for about 15% of the total emissions, but China continued to ramp up steel production last year to meet the surging demand amid the post-pandemic economic recovery. China produced 1.053 billion tonnes of crude steel and 1.325 billion tonnes of steel products in 2020, recording a YoY increase of 5.2%and 7.7% respectively, as aside from the decreased steel production in March due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, the steady steel output rise was realized in other 11 months. In addition, strong steel demand in China lifted its 2020 steel imports to the highest level since 2005, even as the country maintained its status as the world's biggest steel exporter. China's finished steel imports rose by 64.4% YoY to 20.23 million tonnes in 2020, with exports falling by 16.5% YoY to 53.68 million tonnes. China also imported 18.3 million tonnes of semi finished steel items in 2020, five times higher than in 2019.

EU Calls for Restoring Pro Trump Trade Relations with US

The European Union's ambassador to the United States Mr Stavros Lambrinidis during a US Chamber of Commerce online event urged US President Mr Joe Biden's administration to immediately lift tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum imports from the EU and to work to settle a longstanding dispute over aircraft subsidies. Mr Lambrinidis told that EU is ready to work with the United States to strengthen the transatlantic trade relationship and had no desire to erect a Fortress Europe. He said “There is no interest in becoming a Fortress Europe. This will never happen. We want to deal with trade disputes with the US quickly, effectively and now. We are entirely ready to work with the United States on looking at trade around the world. EU is ready to immediately lift its own retaliatory tariffs of 25% if the United States removed the Section 232 tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum. Doing so would provide a big boost to many sectors in both regions."

He also called on the United States to help revive the defunct Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization. "

EU has proposed the creation of a trade and technology council to tackle issues of concern, including cyber security threats, setting standards for artificial intelligence, export controls and investment screening

Effective June 1, 2018, US imposed additional tariffs of 25% and 10% on steel and aluminum imports from almost all countries, including EU. In response, EU had triggered the retaliatory tariffs also in June 2018.

JSW Steel Pitches for Zero Import Duty on Coking Coal

JSW Steels Joint MD & Group CFO Mr Seshagiri in an interview with CNBC-TV18 opined that “For metal sector, what we are looking in the budget is that whatever is available in India for steelmaking or for metal value addition should be preserved in India rather than allowing it to be exported. Also, whatever is not available in India like coking coal or limestone or any other refractories which we have to import from overseas, they are not available in India, wherever duties are applicable, if we have to compete with the countries where duties are negligible in those countries for import of those raw materials, these duties should be made to zero.

Mr Rao added “There are so many taxes which the Indian manufacturing sector has been paying to either local authorities or state governments. These taxes have to be imposed on imports, the government will get more revenue, that revenue can be used for reimbursing to exports then government is not at a loss and the Indian manufacturing industry’s competitiveness will go up.”.

ArcelorMittal Italia to Restart Blast Furnace No 2 at Ilva

ArcelorMittal Italia's management represented by the CEO Lucia Morselli and the Human Resources Director Arturo Ferrucci at a meeting held in Taranto told FIM, FIOM, UILM and USB trade unions that blast furnace No 2 at llva plant will be restarted in the coming days. Specifically, the company stated that the delay in the restart of BF2, scheduled for 26 January, resulted from a technical problem of the boring machine. However, the kiln preheating procedure was started .With the restart of BF No 2, which has been idle since last spring, daily steel production at the plant in Taranto should rise from 10,000 tonnes to 14,000 tonnes. As a result, total production at the plant is expected to be around 5 million tonnes with BFs Nos 1, 2 and 4 operating. ArcelorMittal Italia had ended 2020 with an annual production of around 3.4 million tonnes, it’s lowest ever.

With regard to the extension of the deadlines for the execution of prescription n.6 of the Environmental Plan, the General Management of the Ministry of the Environment has sent a communication to ArcelorMittal which contains the reasons that prevent the request for extension of the aforementioned requirement of the Integrated Environmental Authorization and which could determine the shutdown of Blast Furnace 4. However, procedures for stopping BF 4, as reported by ArcelorMittal, could start from January 31st, the deadline for the implementation of the Prime Ministerial Decree of September 29th 2017.

Temporary layoffs due to Covid-19 started on January 4 for another 12 weeks for all employees at the Taranto plant, which may affect up to 8,132 direct employees. According to the company, this is due to the persistence of the reduction in work activity attributable to the pandemic.

Tata Steel Join Climate Initiative at Davos Summit

Kalinga TV reported that Tata Steel has joined a new initiative. The Mission Possible Partnership, a new coalition formed to accelerate the decarbonisation of global industries representing 30% of global emissions, was launched at World Economic Forum in Davos. Run by the Energy Transitions Commission, Rocky Mountain Institute, the We Mean Business coalition and the World Economic Forum, the Mission Possible Partnership aims to accelerate several pathways for decarbonising heavy industry and transport by unifying the critical actors needed to influence and enable industry transformation at speed and scale.

The partnership builds on the success of the Mission Possible Platform, which launched at the United Nations Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit in 2019, and has grown from 30 companies in 2019 to 400, who all are committed to working on concrete actions towards net-zero. The partnership will help more industries mobilise resources, align across a greater number of organisations, and accelerate the race to zero. This initiative will help carbon-intensive sectors reach their targets and bring in the systemic change needed to succeed by providing a clear path to net zero.

The MPP is centred on the idea that the Paris Agreement, with its focus on national targets, will not generate the plans and solutions necessary to achieve efficient and effective transition strategies for global industries on its own. The most important missing piece of the global climate action architecture is an effort by sectors, complementing country-centric strategies with action from global industries to unlock technology and energy transformation.

In late 2021, the partnership will aim to showcase net-zero agreement breakthroughs in shipping, aviation, trucking, chemical and steel sectors. Within three years, it hopes to help companies complete climate action agreements for these seven sectors covering 30 per cent of global emissions.
