Mechel’s Rail Sales in 2020 up by 8% YoY

Russia’s leading mining and steel maker Mechel Group sold 300,000 tonnes of rails in 2020, which is 8% more than in 2019. Russian Railways were the chief recipient of Mechel’s rails, accounting for 234,000 tonnes. The remainder, approximately 70,000 tonnes, went to other Russian and foreign-based consumers. Mechel Group’s steel division includes two facilities producing various types of rails at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant for railway and switch point rails and Izhstal for subway conductor rails.

Last year, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s rail shipments went up 8% year-on-year. The plant’s exports went up by 74% year-on-year. Its sales geography expanded, with Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s rails shipped to Georgia and Latin America for the first time.

Apart from Russian Railways, key consumers of Mechel’s rails include Mosinzhproekt and Moscow Metro, which use Mechel’s rail products both for maintenance and for construction of new underground lines. Over the previous accounting period, Mechel’s facilities supplied over 87,000 tonnes of rails for construction of new metro lines and repairs to the existing metro railways in the Russian capital, with supplies including Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s R65 and R50 rails and Izhstal’s conductor rails.

Izhstal’s supplies of conductor rails in 2020 went up by 27% year-on-year. In 2020, Izhstal went through voluntary certification of its conductor rails, which gives the product competitive advantage and enables the plant to expand its customer portfolio and supply the rails to CIS member states.

Personeel Tata Steel bezorgd over behoud staalproductie IJmuiden

Transporeon to Improve Logistics for Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe

Logisticsit reported Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, which has been using Transporeon’s time slot management to coordinate the loading and unloading of trucks since 2008, has agreed upon cooperation with Transporeon to able to monitor deliveries to its customers, even outside the loading zone. Real-time visibility allows Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe to track and manage the position of every delivery, similar to the way an airport control tower oversees traffic and allocates time slots flexibly to ensure the safe execution of takeoffs and landings. Precisely estimated arrival times make it possible to plan processes in the loading zone with greater foresight than before and to handle them just in time. This way, unnecessary waiting times can be avoided and costs due to unused cranes waiting for trucks can be minimized. A new time slot can be assigned dynamically in the event of a delay.

Data based RTV allows to automatically calculate the truck travel time in advance. 88% of the time, the estimated time of arrival is accurate six hours in advance. Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe and Transporeon intend to improve this value, which is well above the market average, even further. For this purpose, the partners have agreed to jointly develop an artificial intelligence algorithm specifically tailored to the needs of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe.

In the future, the steel manufacturer will handle all truck deliveries via the world's leading platform in transport logistics. The Transporeon network is the largest of its kind, used by more than 100,000 carriers. As a result, Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe receives the best possible offer for its orders, optimizing transport costs and reducing loading times. At the same time, the effort to provide and maintain a freight assignment platform operated in house becomes obsolete. Transporeon simplifies freight assignment, its processing and monitoring. Over 700 trucks a day leave the sites of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG to deliver a wide range of high grade flat steel products to customers.

Tenaris Reduces Drilling Time for Canadian operator

Tenaris has helped an independent Canadian operator reduce its drilling time by four days and costs by 25% after running the TenarisHydril Wedge 625 connection in Canada’s Montney formation. When Tenaris’s technical team conducted a review of the drilling environment, they discovered a need for sour service steel grades with semi-premium connections. Tenaris suggested an enhanced T95-ICY and TN110-SS casing with TXP BTC connections for the 200 mm diameter well. After discussing possible solutions for well optimization, Tenaris provided a maximum clearance high-strength alternative in TenarisHydril Wedge 625, as the ideal solution for a smaller bit size hole. The semi-flush premium connection paired with the smaller drill bit allowed the operator to reduce its well diameter from 200 mm to 171 mm and ultimately to drill the well in 17 days, four days less than originally calculated with threaded and coupled connections. This important reduction contributed to a 25% cost savings compared to the company’s forecast, according to the operator’s CEO.

Tenaris is now exploring the use of the Wedge 441 connection, a slim-line, threaded and coupled connection from the new Wedge 400 Series line, for further casing design optimization in future wells. This semi-premium connection complies with all of the specifications of the Wedge 625®connection, without the metal-to-metal seal, which is not needed in this environment.

Tenaris produced this pipe and connection in Canada at the seamless facility in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

VAM BOLT-II Selected by LUKOIL for Caspian Sea Well

LUKOIL Nizhnevolzhskneft has chosen Vallourec to deliver its VAM BOLT-II solution with a large 18 inches outer diameter for the Caspian Sea Khazri-2 well. Its high performance levels were proven when the connection was successfully deployed with zero reject on a Neptune jack up drilling rig. This is the first time VAM BOLT-II ran on this diameter range. The most recent design-improved generation of VAM flush connections gives higher torque capacity and outstanding performance. Vallourec supplied LUKOIL with 5 casing strings and 345 tons of VAM BOLT-II as well as accessories such as lifting and handling circulation head. The VAM BOLT-II solution has a double-start thread design and make up is quick and easy, it saves platform installation time and make for perfect connection to large bore subsea well heads.

LUKOIL has been especially technically demanding, as the nearest gas formation was at approximately 12,500 feet and the planned setting depth was roughly 6,000 feet. Consequently, the customer specified an outer diameter constraint because of the blowout preventer size of almost 19 inches and a liquid tight shouldered connection with an OD of 18 inches and wall thickness of 0.64 inches with a maximum make-up torque not exceeding 109.9 klb per ft.

LUKOIL Nizhnevolzhskneft is a wholly owned subsidiary of LUKOIL and specializes in oil and gas field development and production in the Caspian and Azov Seas. Since its foundation in 1995, one of the company’s priorities has been to implement the Caspian project, the search for and future development of hydrocarbon deposits in this Sea. These deposits are some of the most complex to get at. The company is now developing Khazri-2, the successor to the 2017 Khazri-1. This offshore exploratory well has one of the most complicated designs in Russia owing to high pressure hydrogen sulfide. Successful implementation of Khazri-2 is extraordinarily vital as it will prime further developments of this Caspian oil field. For example, the Titonskaya-1 well is set for 2021 development with an almost similar design.

OMK Delivers Safety Pipeline Valves to Gazprom in Yamal

The United Metallurgical Company OMK has supplied nearly 300 units of safety pipeline valves to PJSC Gazprom's facilities located in Yamal. The products were manufactured at the OMK Armstal business unit Blagoveshchensk Valve Plant JSC in Republic of Bashkortostan. The supplied valves, according to the customer's requirements, are designed for operation in permafrost conditions: temperature load up to minus 50 degree Celsius and constant high humidity, as well as for high working pressure parameters of up to 10 MPa. For their manufacture, the technologists of the Blagoveshchensk plant OMK, together with the specialists of the specialized research institute, promptly developed a special steel grade capable of withstanding the specified loads.

Taking into account the complete production cycle of BAZ, from design to complex logistics, the contract was completed in the shortest possible time of one month. The valves delivered to Yamal took their place and allowed Gazprom to complete the project on time.
