Korean Researcher Lightweight Stainless Steel by Adding Aluminium
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 07, 2021 09:27 am

ANI reported that the South Korea’s Ministry of Science & ICT’s Korea Institute of Materials Science announced the results of Dr Lee Chang-hoon's team in the steel materials research lab were listed in TOP100 materials selected by Scientific Reports. Dr Lee's research team was recognized for developing the world's first lightweight stainless steel, which is about 20% lighter than existing stainless steel. In order to reduce the weight, the research team added 12% of aluminium while reducing the brittleness of steel by optimizing the number of alloy elements, such as carbon, manganese, and chromium. In particular, this material produces a thin oxide layer with chromium that enables it to withstand corrosion.

Korea Institute of Materials Science said that this research can promote the development of steel technology by overcoming corrosion and weight, which are the main disadvantages of existing steel. Korea Institute of Materials Science Director Mr Lee Jung-hwan said "This achievement has set a new scientific and social example of steel technology. KIMS will make the effort to contribute to the development of steel technology."

An international science journal 'Scientific Report' selects and publishes the most downloaded papers in each field as the TOP100 list every year.

GMS Market Commentary on Ship Breaking in Week 35
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 07, 2021 09:08 am

World's leading cash buyer of ships for recycling GMS said that “Far from being the traditionally quieter summer / monsoon months, July and August have passed with marginally weaker, albeit still record numbers above USD 600/Ton and deals still being concluded, particularly in the beleaguered tanker and offshore sectors. There has been a minimal supply of tonnage from dry bulk and container owners, with the so-called ‘super cycle’ for both sectors still in full swing. Shipowners have been looking to cash in on their ‘older’ & ‘survey-due’ inventory, and in many cases, recycling prices have actually been surpassing secondhand levels in recent times, making the decision to scrap, relatively easy. There had been a slight wobble in the Bangladeshi market, with a USD 30/LDT correction in steel prices. Nevertheless, rates remain firm going into the final month of Q3 and there is plenty of capacity at sub-continent yards as hungry Recyclers look to take tonnage amidst the recent slowdown in supply.”

GMS said “Vaccines continue their rollout at pace across the sub-continent and many are hoping that the worst of Covid-19 has now passed, having seen horrific caseloads and fatalities earlier in the year. Moreover, the spread of the even more contagious Delta variant is keeping concerns elevated, as most countries still have restrictions on incoming Indian crew or even sending their international crew to India and face possible delays during repatriation.”

GMS concluded “Overall, prospects for the industry moving forward do remain stable to positive, as steel plate prices are the key driver for much of the bullishness, with China recently having announced that they will no longer export steel to the sub-continent markets.”

    GMS Pricing

Laing O’Rourker Awards Everton Stadium Steel Package to Severfield
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 07, 2021 09:02 am

North Yorkshire based structural steel specialist in the UK Severfield plc has has been awarded the steel package tender for the new Everton’s Bramley Moore stadium. The enabling works were earlier started in July by the main contractor Laing O’Rourker for the GBP 500 millio stadium. The new Everton’s Bramley-Moore stadium has been designed by MEIS architects and engineers BuroHappold. Among other transformations, the stadium’s height has been lowered so that it is defined as a mid-rise building, in a plan to address heritage concerns. The new Everton’s Bramley-Moore stadium’s development director Colin Chong also previously stated the new stadium has been designed to withstand floods for the next 100 years.

Severfield said: “The UK and Europe order book at 1 September includes a significant amount of new work which we have secured over recent months and now stands at a new record level of GBP 376 milion, of which GBP 291 million is for delivery over the next 12 months. This leaves the Group very well-positioned with a strong future workload for the remainder of the 2022 financial year and beyond. The growth in the order book has been driven by several significant project wins including the new stadium for Everton FC, two large and various smaller distribution facilities in the UK, reflecting a sector which continues to remain buoyant, new HS2 bridge packages and other bridge awards reflecting investment in infrastructure by Highways England and Network Rail.”

Metallic Glass Coated Gears Making Cobots a Reality
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 07, 2021 09:00 am

For all the space that robots have occupied in the popular imagination, the number of real world automatons remains limited due to cost and safety. In the mid 1990s, two Northwestern University professors patented an alternative concept under a new term cobots, collaborative robots, smaller, smarter, more responsive with tighter self-control and better manners all around. In the years since, leaps in artificial intelligence and sensors have made these friendlier robots a reality, but cost still prevents their widespread adoption. A strain wave gear converts the fast, low-torque rotation of an engine into slow, precise, forceful motion. As the oblong wave generator at the center spins, it deforms the flexspline around it, which engages with the teeth of a fixed outer spline. The interaction causes the flexspline to rotate in the opposite direction of the wave generator, moving only two teeth for each turn of the motor. The biggest cost drivers are gears.

Now, Pasadena California based Amorphology hopes to drop the price of cobots with advances originally made for NASA’s planetary rovers. Gears on NASA’s rovers, like most gears on Earth, are made of steel, which is both strong and wear resistant. But steel gears need liquid lubrication and oils don’t work well in frigid environments like the lunar or Martian surface. So, NASA’s Curiosity rover spends about three hours warming up lubricants every time it prepares to start rolling, using energy that could be used otherwise. With an eye toward solving this and other materials-related issues, Jet Propulsion Laboratory hired Mr Douglas Hofmann in 2010, then a research scientist at Caltech with a background in materials science and engineering. NASA funded a new metallurgy facility at Jet Propulsion Laboratory to explore alternatives for gears and develop new metal alloys.

Most metallic glass alloys form a hard, smooth surface. This gives metallic glass gears a long lifetime without the need for liquid lubricants. An emerging class of specially engineered materials called bulk metallic glass, also known as amorphous metals, are rapidly cooled from liquid to solid before their atoms form the crystalline lattice structure that is common to all other metals. Instead, the atoms are randomly arranged like those of glass, giving the materials properties of both glass and metal. Depending on their constituent elements, often including zirconium, titanium, and copper, they can be very strong, and because they aren’t crystalline, they’re elastic. Most compositions also form a hard, smooth ceramic oxide surface

Currently, the Cold Operable Lunar Deployable Arm COLDArm, a collaborative effort between Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the company Motiv Space Systems for lunar missions, is expected to use bulk metallic glass gears to operate in temperatures down to minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit without the need for a heating source.

But amorphous metals alloys are designed to have low melting temperatures, because to make a metallic glass you have to cool the alloy faster than it can crystallize. This low melting point, together with their native strength and the fact that their volume hardly changes upon solidifying, makes bulk metallic glasses easy to use in injection molding, which can dramatically reduce the cost of making parts like gears.

Most high-strength metals have high melting points. They can’t be cast with molds because, in molten form they would simply melt the mold. And steel needs to be rolled or forged to strengthen it, which also precludes molding. So, gears typically start as steel billets that are machined into their final shape. Tiny gears, like those for small cobots, are especially challenging and costly. Flexsplines are thin, flexible, cup-shaped gears integral to strain wave gears common in robotics. They’re typically cut, ground, and drilled from steel billets in a process that is long and costly. The flexspline on the right was injection molded from metallic glass in a cheaper, simpler process. The most difficult, expensive gear component to machine from a steel block is one of the most common in robotic arms: the flexspline, an extremely thin-walled, flexible cup with a toothed rim. This is the centerpiece of what’s known as a strain wave gear assembly, which offers better precision, higher torque, and lower backlash than other gear sets. This eliminates positioning errors that would be compounded in a robotic limb with multiple joints.

This is where molding with amorphous metals promises the greatest savings: it costs about half as much as machining strain wave gears from steel. Molding small, high-performance planetary and strain wave gears became the central business plan for Amorphology.

Continued Surge in Coking Coal Prices Keeping Steel Making Costs Up

While steel makers globally are riding Super Cycle in steel prices, two most important steel making ingredients have been extremely volatile albeit in opposite directions impacting their cost of steel making. Benchmark 62% Australian ore prices have crashed by 16% in first 7 days of September to USD 132 CFR China, prime hard coking coal prices have surged by 18% to USD 275 FOB Australia. While, the actual cost component of iron ore & coking coal varies to a great extant for steel mills in different countries, the raw material cost component for pure pay steel mills importing iron ore & coking coal has spiraled up by about USD 200 per tonne since May 2020 as Chinese post COVID recovery propelled iron ore & coking coal price up. Even though, the unprecedented realizations due to all time high steel prices have more than absorbed increase in steel making cost, the continued surge in coking coal prices is starting to worry steel mills as the steel prices in many regions, except in US, have stabilized or corrected slightly influenced by a host of factors including Chinese curbs on property, resurgence of COVID spread in many countries and reduction in automobile production due to semiconductor shortages.

    1. In recent days, China jacked up mortgage rates in a major city, vowed to accelerate the development of government subsidized rental housing, and moved to increase scrutiny on everything from financing of developers and newly listed home prices to title transfers. While China has spent years trying to cool property prices, analysts say this round of crackdowns will be different. One clear signal came in Vice Premier Han’s comments on steering away from using real estate to provide short-term boosts for the economy.

    2. Global car manufacturers are struggling to deal with the impact of the global chip shortage and it’s hard to tell when the complex issue will be resolved but estimates are that the chip shortage could continue through to 2024. The shortage is thought to have been exacerbated by the move to electric vehicles, which typically uses 10 times more chips than conventional vehicles.

AMNS India Sees Demand Recovery Supporting Steel Prices in India
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 09:35 am

AM/NS India’s Chief Marketing Officer Mr Ranjan Dhar in an exclusive interview with Mr Surya Sarathi Ray of Financial Express has opined that “Historically, Indian prices have followed import price parity. However, for the past several months, Indian prices are at a considerable discount compared to international prices. Domestic prices will be supported by several factors in the coming months: firstly, the domestic steel prices are at a huge discount as compared to global prices. Secondly, improving domestic demand, which we’re already seeing for the past couple of weeks; and thirdly, greater demand and supply balance, primarily created by expected production cuts by China in the second half.”

He also said “After a dent in demand during the second wave that hit in May and July; we are witnessing a good broad-based demand recovery since August, particularly from the auto, white goods and infrastructure sectors. Though, the impact of the second wave on the industry was not as severe as the first one because we all are well-prepared in terms of production, logistics, sales, and more importantly health and safety of stakeholders to effectively tackle the situation.”

German Government to Part Fund ArcelorMittal’s Hydrogen DRI Plant
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 09:33 am

During a visit to ArcelorMittal Germany’s steel plant in Hamburg, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze pledged the Federal Government’s support for the construction of Germany’s first industrial scale hydrogen-based direct reduced iron plant. The Federal Government has expressed its intention to provide EUR 55 million of funding support towards the construction of the plant, which is half of the EUR 110 million capital expenditures required. The next step is for the European Commission to approve the Federal Government's intention to provide funding before the installation of the new plant can begin. Production is scheduled to start in 2025.

This demonstrator plant, which will use hydrogen exclusively as the chemical agent to reduce iron ore into DRI, is intended to lay the foundation for a steelmaking process that means steel can be produced with zero carbon-emissions, using electric arc furnaces fed with hydrogen reduced DRI and scrap metal, powered by renewable electricity. In a transition phase, the process of reducing iron ore with hydrogen will first be demonstrated using hydrogen generated by the separation of waste gas from the Hamburg plant. Once available in sufficient volumes and at an affordable price, green hydrogen, made from the electrolysis of water using renewable energy, will be used.

The plant is an important component of ArcelorMittal Germany’s Steel4Future strategy, which involves the conversion of its four German plants, in Hamburg, Bremen, Duisburg and Eisenhüttenstadt, to zero carbon-emissions steel production in the coming years. By 2030, ArcelorMittal plans to produce more than one million tonnes of zero carbon-emissions steel a year in the Hamburg plant alone, thereby saving around 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions that result from activities within an organisation’s control. Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from energy purchased by the organisation, for its own use.

UK’s TRA to Review Decision Terminate Steel Tariffson 9 Categories
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 09:31 am

UK’s Trade Remedies Authority said that it will reconsider its recommendations over scrapping tariffs on some steel imports after it has received eight submissions from five domestic steel producers and three importers asking for it to review its initial assessment. The producers said that the TRA should have extended protections to more categories of steel products, while the importers wanted more protections to be scrapped.

UK Steel Director General Mr Gareth Stace said “The steel sector welcomes the announcement of the TRA’s formal reconsideration of its original decision to terminate steel safeguards on half of steel products. Such a termination would leave the sector exposed to uncontrolled surges in imports and undermine the effectiveness of the remaining safeguards, threatening the long-term viability the UK’s steel sector. There are strong legal, WTO compliant, grounds for the maintenance of these measures for the full three-year term. Moreover, at a time when the EU and US have maintained their own protections on all steel products, and UK’s steel producers face obstacles to exporting into these markets, it is the only sensible course of action to maintain equal measures for our own producers.”

Trade body UK Steel warned in June 2021 that such a decision would be a hammer blow for a sector which has been struggling for years and with both the US and EU keeping strict tariffs in place, UK could become a dumping ground for cheaper steel.

Back in June the TRA triggered mass outrage from the steel industry when it said that tariffs should be scrapped across nine of 19 product categories. The recommendation was accepted by the Secretary of State for International Trade, who also provided for a 12-month extension of the current protections for five of the nine product categories set to be given the axe.

SSAB to Deliver Fossil Free Steel to Cargotec
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 09:26 am

Swedish steel maker and prime mover in the area of green steel SSAB is to deliver fossil-free steel to leading provider of cargo and load handling solutions Cargotec. Cargotec plans to use the fossil-free steel in their cargo handling equipment. SSAB and Cargotec have agreed to work together on the introduction of fossil-free steel to the cargo handling industry. The companies will start coordinated development toward the use of SSAB’s fossil-free steel in Cargotec’s cargo handling equipment. This is a strategic partnership for the benefit of both parties and end users. It represents a significant milestone in moving toward a sustainable development and a fossil-free product offering.

This is the fifth announcement by SSAB for development & supply of green steel in recent times

April - Volvo Plans to Produce Trucks Made from Hydrogen Steel from SSAB

June - Volvo Cars to Explore Using Fossil Free Steel with SSAB

September - SSAB to Deliver Fossil Free Steel to Mercedes-Ben

September - SSAB to Supply Fossil Free Steel to Faurecia for Automotive Seats

In 2026, SSAB plans to supply the market with fossil-free steel at a commercial scale after a conversion of its Oxelosund blast furnaces into an electric arc furnace and by using HYBRIT technology, which replaces coking coal traditionally needed for iron ore-based steelmaking, with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. This process virtually eliminates carbon dioxide-emissions in steel production.

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall created HYBRIT, Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology, in 2016, with the aim of developing a technology for fossil-free iron- and steelmaking. In July, SSAB Oxelosund rolled the first fossil-free steel produced using HYBRIT technology, i.e., reduced by 100% fossil-free hydrogen instead of coal and coke, with good results.

Lhoist to Supply Climate Neutral Lime Stone to Thyssenkrupp Steel
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 08, 2021 09:19 am

Thyssenkrupp Steel and Lhoist Germany are moving into the future together: Germany’s biggest steel producer will in future use the climate neutral product line LEVEL|BLUE of global lime producer Lhoist for decarbonizing the supply chain on its way towards sustainable steel production. Thyssenkrupp Steel’s Head of Procurement & Supply Management Dr Jens Geimer said “We are right in the middle of the transformation to climate-neutral steel production. Our approach here is comprehensive: Aside from decarbonizing our own units, we also want to make our supply chains gradually climate-neutral by 2050. To this end, we are closely working with our suppliers. We are pleased that we have found Lhoist as a partner in the lime sector to support us in achieving this goal.”

Lhoist Germany and thyssenkrupp Steel have a long-standing supplier relationship. The two companies have been systematically forging ahead with CO2 reduction projects for many years now.

In steelmaking, lime products are used to remove undesirable elements from the hot metal and promote the formation of slag.

Lhoist Germany is the German subsidiary of Lhoist Group, a global lime and limestone producer headquartered in Belgium. Rheinkalk GmbH, with its 12 sites and 1,200 employees in Germany, has belonged to Lhoist Germany since 1999.
