    02 Feb, 2022, 5:09 am

US steel maker Nucor Corporation announced that its board of directors has approved a USD 290 million investment to expand the product capabilities of its Crawfordsville Indiana steel sheet mill by adding a construction grade continuous galvanizing line and prepaint line. The construction grade continuous galvanizing line will have a capacity of 300,000 tons per year while the prepaint line will have an annual capacity of 250,000 tons per year. This investment is expected to take two years to complete pending permitting, regulatory approvals, the award of state and local incentives and other tax considerations.

This investment further expands Nucor's existing galvanizing and prepaint capabilities, which include recently added continuous galvanizing lines at its sheet mills in Arkansas and Kentucky, and the acquisition of a prepaint line at its Arkansas sheet mill.

Nucor Steel Indiana was Nucor's first steel sheet mill, starting operations in 1989. The Crawfordsville mill is where Nucor pioneered electric arc furnace thin-slab casting. Since this breakthrough, Nucor has continued to invest in advanced sheet steel products and technologies. Nucor operates five strategically located sheet mills that utilize thin slab casters and recently announced adding a sixth sheet mill, a majority-owned joint venture in California. These mills produce flat-rolled steel for automotive, appliance, construction, pipe and tube and many other industrial and consumer applications. In September 2021, Nucor announced its plan to build a seventh sheet mill, a three-million-ton capacity state-of-the-art facility that will be located in Mason County, West Virginia, to serve the country's largest steel consuming regions, the Midwest and the Northeast.

Salzgitter to Deliver Low-CO2 Steel to BMW Group Plants in Europe

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    02 Feb, 2022, 5:20 am

From 2026, Salzgitter AG is to supply all European plants of the BMW Group with low CO2 steel. The companies have now concluded an agreement on series supply from the low-CO2 process route. Steel that will in future not be produced with fossil raw materials such as coal, but on the basis of hydrogen and green electricity, and which will therefore cause over 95% less CO2 emissions, makes a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the BMW Group's supplier network. This makes the BMW Group, whose press shops in Europe process more than half a million tons of steel per year, the first automobile manufacturer in the world to have signed such an agreement.

With this move, the BMW Group is expanding its sourcing of low-carbon steel to two suppliers. The aim is to use low-carbon steel to meet over 40% of demand at its European plants by 2030, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by up to 400,000 tonnes per year.

Salzgitter AG will offer its customers from the automotive, energy, industrial and household applications and the construction sector CO2-deliver low-impact, high-quality material solutions ready for series production from 2026. On the basis of the established electrified steel route in the Peine plant, the transformation to green steel is already being prepared for the individual customer in terms of process and series maturity.

In order to massively reduce CO2 emissions in steel production, Salzgitter AG is gradually phasing out steel production as part of the transformation program SALCOS, SAlzgitter Low CO Steelmakings, witch to a hydrogen-based route. In contrast to previous processes with blast furnaces, hydrogen and green electricity replace the carbon previously required for steel production. Salzgitter AG plans to use this process to gradually reduce CO2 emissions in steel production to just five percent of the original emissions.

The BMW Group and Salzgitter AG set up a closed material cycle for reusable steel from the BMW Group plant in Leipzig more than five years ago. After the plant has been supplied with steel coils, on the way back Salzgitter AG takes the steel to be recycled, such as that produced in the press shops when doors are punched out, and uses it for the production of new steel. We are now expanding this cooperation.

    MMK Celebrates 90 Fiery Years

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    02 Feb, 2022, 5:33 am

Flagship of the Russian ferrous metallurgy, the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, is 90 years old. On February 1, 1932, the first blast furnace in Magnitogorsk produced the first cast iron. This date became the birthday of the enterprise, which left a bright mark on the national history and today continues to make a significant contribution to the country's economy, meeting the needs of the basic sectors of Russian industry. For 90 years, the plant has produced 663 million tonnes of pig iron, 856 million tonnes of steel and 706 million tonnes of rolled products.

Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin in a greeting message said “Your legendary enterprise has a rich history and glorious traditions. The selfless work of several generations created a flagship of national metals industry in Magnitogorsk. Since the first years of its operation, the enterprise manufactured top-quality goods that enjoyed high demand, and was instrumental in the country’s industrialization. During the Great Patriotic War, the enterprise supplied ammunition to the front without respite, provided defence factories with tank armour and made a weighty contribution to the Great Victory. Your enterprise actively introduces new equipment and technologies, attracts investment and helps strengthen Russia’s defence capability, as well as its key strategic economic sectors, including the energy industry, construction and engineering. And, of course, it is highly important that you devote great attention to environmental security and implement various principles of corporate social responsibility.”

Over the past two decades, MMK has been implementing long-term technical re-equipment programs aimed at modernizing existing production facilities and building new capacities focused on the production of high-margin products. Over the years, modern high-performance complexes have been built at the plant, which have allowed the company to become a leader in the supply of metal products for the country's pipe industry, automotive and shipbuilding, and to take a leading position in the premium product market. In addition, MMK pays great attention to climate change issues and plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere to the level of 1.8 tons of CO2 equivalent per tonne of steel by 2025 - this will be facilitated, among other things, by the introduction of technology for using "syngas" (synthesis gas) that promotes decarbonization.

Tex-Isle is Leading Manufacturing of Green Steel Pipes in US

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Feb, 2022, 5:20 am

Houston Texas US based leading manufacturer of oil country tubular goods, line pipe & standard pipe Tex-Isle Inc has announced the findings of a third-party assessment of the company's greenhouse gas emissions profile that revealed the company as a market leader in low-carbon and high ESG performance. The assessment, performed by Cornerstone, finds that Tex-Isle's sourcing of low-carbon steel and adoption of best practices, including the use of recycled steel, utilization of electric arc furnace technology, near 100 percent fully electric facilities, and close proximity to its raw material supplier and customers, position the company as a top industry performer. As a result of Tex-Isle's investments in being a low-carbon provider of steel products, the company's emissions performance significantly outperforms the industry average. Specifically, in 2019 the average CO2 emissions for steel production were 1.85 tons of CO2 per ton of crude steel cast. By comparison, the emissions associated with the final steel product that Tex-Isle delivered to its customers in 2019 range from 0.7 to 1.0 tons of CO2 per ton of produced pipe. The steel sourced for Tex-Isle's products was 0.46 tons of CO2 per ton of steel.

Tex-Isle's commitment to best practices places it in the top quartile of steel pipe providers in terms of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The findings reflect Tex-Isle's recognition of the need to establish baseline performance, conduct continued monitoring, and constantly seek opportunities to implement improvements in the company's environmental profile in its efforts to be a leading manufacturer of steel pipe products made and melted in America.

With the imminent opening of its new 350,000 ton per year capacity steel tubular mill in Robstown in Texas, Tex-Isle will soon manufacture a green, environmentally conscious steel pipe product in an otherwise traditionally carbon-intensive manufacturing process. Its environmental performance also benefits from its close proximity to its rolled steel supplier and its oil and gas customers along the Gulf Coast.

Tex-Isle is a third generation, family-owned business, founded by Hans Kayem in 1959.

Boston Metal is a global metals technology solutions company that is commercializing molten oxide electrolysis, a patented tonnage metals production platform. MOE provides the metals industry with a more efficient, lower cost, and greener solution to produce a range of metals and alloys from a wide variety of feedstocks. Powered by renewable electricity, molten oxide electrolysis converts iron ore into liquid metal and oxygen. The modular, scalable platform produces no carbon emissions, is highly energy efficient, and works with a wide range of iron ore grades. Besides steel, the novel technology can also be used to manufacture other metal products. In 2021, the company closed an over-subscribed Series B funding round that saw intense interest from iron ore miners to steel end users, in addition to garnering reinvestments from all Series A participants, including Gates-backed Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

Salzgitter Presents New Strategy "Salzgitter AG 2030"

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Feb, 2022, 5:36 am

German steel maker Salzgitter AG has presented its new strategy "Salzgitter AG 2030". The aim is to establish the group as an independent market leader for circular economy solutions with innovative products and processes. This can only succeed with strong partners and networks. Therefore, closed value streams and value chains are established in cooperation with customers and suppliers. Salzgitter AG is committed to binding, science-based CO2 reduction targets and joins the Science Based Targets Initiative.

In a first step, Salzgitter has defined the following goals that it wants to achieve by 2030:

    1. Reduction of Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by more than 50% compared to 2018 - Electricity is purchased exclusively from renewable sources and where it makes sense also from our own production, in order to make the continued energy-intensive manufacture of the products as climate-neutral as possible.

    2. Expansion of scrap recycling activities by more than 50% to over 3 million tonnes per year.

A key element of the new strategy is the significantly accelerated decarbonization as part of SALCOS. The Salzgitter Group is thus underlining its role as a frontrunner in low-CO2 steel production: the first blast furnace is to be replaced by direct reduction plants and electric furnaces as early as 2025. In 2026, the production of more than 1 million tons of green steel is planned via this route. As early as 2033 and thus 12 years earlier than originally announced, the integrated iron and steel works should be fully geared to the new world.

The strategic realignment is accompanied and visualized by a group-wide brand relaunch. In the course of this, the corporate design was revised and Salzgitter AG received a further developed logo as the most visible component of this comprehensive process.
