    03 Feb, 2022, 5:38 am

Montenegrin local daily Dan reported that Montenegro's diversified holding group Neksan is interested in the acquisition of steel mill Zeljezara Niksic from Turkey's Toscelik. The media report quoted Neksan owner Mr Miodrag Daka Davidovic as saying that "We do not need any partner to manage Zeljezara Niksic. We are interested in taking over Zeljezara Niksic, as well as several other companies in Montenegro. Neksan plans to discuss its plans with the government.”

Turkey-based Toscelik Profil ve Sac Endustrisi AS, part of Tosyali Holding, had acquired the bankrupt state-owned Montenegrin steel mill Zeljezara Niksic, which had been put on sale in order to reduce the debt burden of Montenegro. Toscelik won the tender bidding EUR 15.1 million in 2012. Toscelik suspended production activities at Zeljezara Niksic in March 2021, due to a drop in orders caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Last year, it started talks for the sale of the steel mill.

Neksan was also in charge of the management of Zeljezara Niksic for 16 months in 2003 and 2004, when the company was sold by the government to Russian company Midland, which later withdrew from the deal and returned the steel mill into state ownership.

Zeljezara Niksic, the largest iron and steel producing company of the former Yugoslavia, produces non-alloy and alloy steel grades with an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes and exports to over 30 countries including Germany, Russia and Turkey.

Prosecutors Open Investigation into Tata Steel IJmuiden & Harsco

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Feb, 2022, 5:42 am

NL Times reported that Netherlands Public Prosecution Service OM has launched a criminal investigation to determine if Tata Steel IJmuiden BV and Harsco Metals Holland BV intentionally and unlawfully released hazardous substances into the soil, air, or surface water. Doing so may have been a threat to public health. OM prosecutors said "Examining the role of executives within these companies will be part of the criminal investigation to decide criminal cases against Tata Steel, Harsco Metals, or any of their managers or executives.:”

The OM's decision came after studying the complaint filed by attorney Bénédicte Ficq. The lawyer represents more than 800 people and several legal entities in the complaint against the two businesses. Last month, a report from the RIVM said that data supplied by Tata Steel about the emissions of harmful substances may not have been complete, and that high concentrations of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in areas which did not match up with data from Tata Steel. The measurements of certain PAHs were about a thousand times higher than it should have been based on the company's data, while concentrations of copper, vanadium, lead, and chromium were all far higher than expected.

Tata said that it would cooperate with the investigation and looks forward to the outcome with confidence. The company noted that it is currently carrying out an investment program to reduce particulate matter, heavy metals and bad odours produced by the plant."

Both companies are based in Velsen, and work closely together. Tata Steel IJmuiden operates steel manufacturing facilities and Harsco Metals is a residual product processor.

Steelmaking in the town dates back to 1918, when the Royal Dutch Blast Furnaces established a plant there. Tata Steel acquired the Ijmuiden plant in 2007. It directly employs around 9,000 workers, many of whom live nearby.

    Published on :
    03 Feb, 2022, 5:45 am

Russian steel maker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works held its sixth annual best supplier competition and recognized its most reliable supply chain partners a MMK's management places great value in this competition since relations with suppliers are one of the key factors for successful future development. An honorary diploma in the category "Leader of Environmental Solutions in Metallurgy" was awarded to Primetals Technologies, for supplying a secondary dedusting system for the BOF melt shop.

The contract for the secondary dedusting project for the BOF melt shop was signed in early 2020 and is currently under implementation. It is aimed at improving the working conditions inside and outside the steel shop and will bring the city of Magnitogorsk one step closer to a green city by significantly reducing emission levels. Primetals technologies supplies engineering, equipment, and supervision for the project and startup is scheduled for summer 2022.

The main task of the secondary dedusting system is to efficiently capture dust emissions that occur during the handling and processing of hot metal and liquid steel (e.g., charging, tapping, reladling). The proper design and location of hoods is essential to achieve the highest dust collection efficiency and ensure clean atmospheric conditions inside and outside the steel shop. A major process improvement is the patented Primetals Technologies peak-cooler technology that absorbs temperature peaks during hot-metal charging and reduces the need for additional cooling air. Hence, this innovative technology based on thermal energy storage leads to reduced dilution air demands and reduced off-gas volume flows. This solution reduces investment and operating costs. Additionally, operational safety is improved, and greater productivity is achieved through a higher charging speed. The advanced pulse-jet filter removes dust from the raw gas stream and assures highly efficient dedusting and increased lifetime of filter bags.

Voestalpine Supplies High-Tech Steel for Winter Olympic Games Gear

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    03 Feb, 2022, 5:46 am

Any materials deployed where snow, ice, and low temperatures dominate must meet stringent quality standards, especially when used in winter sports equipment. Austrian steel maker voestalpine supplies high-quality materials for the manufacture of ski edges, blades for ice skates, and luge components. Consequently, premium steel from voestalpine will be helping athletes achieve top performances at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

voestalpine round wire is a pre-material used to manufacture exceptionally hard-wearing edges on skis. An Austrian manufacturer of ski edges, one of only two in the world, has been sourcing voestalpine wire for skis used in professional and amateur sport for decades. The grade of steel selected for the edges significantly influences a ski’s performance and service life. Downhill races, in which competitors reach speeds of up to 160 km per hour, are extremely physically demanding, both on the professional skier and their equipment. voestalpine also plays an important role in helping to hold skiers’ feet securely in their boots, supplying the high-quality material used in the buckles on famous brands of ski boots.

Professional ice skaters make equally stringent demands of their equipment. The leaps and turns typical in figure skating subject skaters and their skates to forces similar in magnitude to those used in centrifugal training for astronauts. In speed skating, sprinters reach speeds of up to 60 km per hour. When consistently used at a professional level, blades need to be sharpened up to four times a week, which is only possible when they are made from a premium material. voestalpine supplies this premium material, a high-alloyed composite, to the global leading manufacturers of professional speed skates. The steel grade is a major determinant of a blade’s running characteristics, while the material must also be wear-resistant and extremely durable.

Premium voestalpine products are also in demand for luge where, at speeds of up to 140 km per hour, both the athlete and their equipment are exposed to extreme stresses. voestalpine supplies ultra-high strength, wear-resistant special steel normally used in aerospace for luge runners. EschmannTextures, a voestalpine subsidiary in North Rhine Westphalia and specialist in surface treatments, has also created a novel film to avoid excessive turbulence. The self-adhesive film is attached to the underbelly of the luge. It mimics the bionic structure of the world’s fastest swimming shark species, and was developed in conjunction with the University of Freiburg Institute of Zoology. Using these voestalpine technologies on the ice track can shave up to a tenth off the winning time in the last Olympic Games, this is a quantum leap in terms of luge. The German luge team, equipped with voestalpine materials, succeeded in winning several medals at the 2021 FIL World Luge Championships.

    03 Feb, 2022, 5:48 am

Tata Steel Europe intends to cease manufacturing operations at Norsk Stål Tynnplater AS in Fredrikstad in Norway, while retaining the legal entity and local sales force. Norsk Stål Tynnplater AS, part of Tata Steel Downstream Europe, is a Service Centre in Fredrikstad in Norway. The site uses steel from Tata Steel IJmuiden to further process into Hot Dip Galvanised and Cold Rolled commodity products with the focus on the industry sector. The proposal to cease manufacturing operations at Fredrikstad has been made following a detailed review of the distribution activities in the Nordics respectively. The majority of the products are sold to customers in Sweden and Tata Steel believes that serving those customers directly from the Halmstad site in Sweden, allows the company to serve them even better. It will offer the necessary strength to compete, enabling it to continue to offer high-value products and services to its customers in the future.

Regrettably the proposal will put at risk 29 jobs. Appropriate consultation processes with employees and their representatives will begin as soon as practicable. Tata Steel will explore all opportunities to re-deploy employees and provide assistance for them.

It is proposed that the closure of production will take place progressively over the coming months. It is only by a consolidated operational footprint that Tata Steel can create a sustainable and competitive business for the future.

Leidinggevenden Tata Steel nu persoonlijk onder vuur
Door ANNET VAN AARSEN EN BART VUIJK

    Updated Vandaag, 03:32
    Gisteren, 19:10
    in NIEUWS

UK Parliament Committee Invites Comment for Making Green Steel

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Feb, 2022, 3:53 am

In the latest stage of its Technological Innovation and Climate Change inquiry, the UK Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee has announced that it is to look at green steel. Environmental Audit Committee chairman Rt Hon Philip Dunne MP said “Steel is the bedrock for many of our low-carbon aspirations: from electricity generation to our modes of transport. But wind turbines and electric vehicles have a major carbon footprint due to the steel used to manufacture them. As the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee has recently pointed out, the decision point for investment to renew the UK’s steel installations is fast approaching, without a clear lead from the Government on the technology to adopt. We will be exploring the technological innovations available to make the steel sector more environmentally friendly. I encourage all those engaged in transforming this essential industry to consider contributing to this stage of our inquiry. Decarbonisation of the sector is a real test of the Government’s mettle and the ingenuity and ambition of UK industry. Successful use of technological advances to green the industry will make a substantial contribution to the goal of Net Zero Britain.”

    Terms of reference

    1. The technologies there are to produce “green steel”; how close they are to commercialisation; and the benefits and risks of each

    2. The relationship between low-carbon steelmaking technologies and the development of other decarbonising technologies

    3. The timescales needed to achieve fossil fuel feedstock replacement and fossil fuel-free energy throughout the supply chain for steel products

    4. The targets the Government should set for low-carbon steelmaking in the UK

    5. The policy support for low-carbon steelmaking in the UK provided in the Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy and the Net Zero Strategy

    6. How effective the Clean Steel Fund is expected to be in helping to deliver decarbonised fuel capacity in the UK

    7. Any additional policy support required to encourage the transition to low-carbon steelmaking

    8. The desirability or otherwise of establishing a low-carbon steelmaking pilot at a UK site

    9. The consequences to the UK steel sector from a failure to invest in alternative technologies in a globally competitive market

The Committee invites written submissions of no more than 3000 words addressing any or all of the issues raised in the following terms of reference, by 10 March 2022.

Steel is a crucial material for the UK’s low carbon aspirations: it is an essential component of wind turbines to electric vehicles. However, the steelmaking process itself produces significant greenhouse gas emissions, with the production of a tonne of steel generating almost two tonnes of CO2 emissions. Industry figures have indicated that decarbonising UK steel production is an enormous challenge and will be difficult to achieve by the 2035 target set by the Climate Change Committee in its Sixth Carbon Budget. The industry is also facing imminent decisions on the investment required to replace blast furnaces at UK steelmaking plants.

MIT Researchers Develop Stronger than Steel Lightweight Polymers

Using a novel polymerization process, MIT chemical engineers have created a new material that is stronger than steel and as light as plastic, and can be easily manufactured in large quantities. The new material is a two-dimensional polymer that self-assembles into sheets, unlike all other polymers, which form one-dimensional, spaghetti-like chains. Until now, scientists had believed it was impossible to induce polymers to form 2D sheets. Such a material could be used as a lightweight, durable coating for car parts or cell phones, or as a building material for bridges or other structures. MIT’s Carbon P Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering Mr Michael Strano said “We don’t usually think of plastics as being something that you could use to support a building, but with this material, you can enable new things. It has very unusual properties and we’re very excited about that.”

Polymers, which include all plastics, consist of chains of building blocks called monomers. These chains grow by adding new molecules onto their ends. Once formed, polymers can be shaped into three-dimensional objects, such as water bottles, using injection molding. Polymer scientists have long hypothesized that if polymers could be induced to grow into a two-dimensional sheet, they should form extremely strong, lightweight materials. However, many decades of work in this field led to the conclusion that it was impossible to create such sheets. One reason for this was that if just one monomer rotates up or down, out of the plane of the growing sheet, the material will begin expanding in three dimensions and the sheet-like structure will be lost.

However, in the new study, MIT researchers came up with a new polymerization process that allows them to generate a two-dimensional sheet called a polyaramide. For the monomer building blocks, they use a compound called melamine, which contains a ring of carbon and nitrogen atoms. Under the right conditions, these monomers can grow in two dimensions, forming disks. These disks stack on top of each other, held together by hydrogen bonds between the layers, which make the structure very stable and strong. The researchers found that the new material’s elastic modulus, a measure of how much force it takes to deform a material, is between four and six times greater than that of bulletproof glass. They also found that its yield strength, or how much force it takes to break the material, is twice that of steel, even though the material has only about one-sixth the density of steel.

MIT researchers are now studying in more details how this particular polymer is able to form 2D sheets, and they are experimenting with changing its molecular makeup to create other types of novel materials.

The researchers have filed for two patents on the process they used to generate the material, which they describe in a paper appearing in Nature. MIT postdoc Yuwen Zeng is the lead author of the study.

The research was funded by the Center for Enhanced Nanofluidic Transport an Energy Frontier Research Center sponsored by the US Department of Energy Office of Science and the Army Research Laboratory.
