NLMK Reports USD 1.8 Billion EBIDTA for 2021

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Feb, 2022, 4:51 am

Russian steel maker NLMK Group has reported EBITDA of USD 1.8 billion in 2021, with an EBITDA margin of 38%. Revenue increased by 75% YoY to USD 16.2 billion due to higher sales prices on all key markets, which was partially offset by the decrease in sales to external markets as slab supplies were redistributed to NLMK USA. Steel output increased to 17.4 million tonnes, up 10% YoY, as overhauls were completed at NLMK Lipetsk BF and BOF operations and as output grew in the Long Products and NLMK USA segments.

Sales totalled 16.8 million tonnes, down 4% YoY. The year-on-year decrease is due to the renewal of intragroup slab supplies to NLMK USA (1.3 million tonnes,) amid a strong demand trend in the region (in 2020, NLMK USA flats were produced using slabs from external markets), an increase in inventory of NLMK slabs in ports following the structural output growth, and normalization of the Russian sites finished product stocks from the low baseline of 2020, caused by feverish demand. Sales of commercial pig iron decreased due to higher consumption of pig iron for steelmaking. An offsetting factor was the increase in sales of NLMK USA finished products and rebar from the Russian sites.

Sales mix: sales of semi-finished products to third parties decreased by 20% YoY as slab supplies to NLMK USA and NLMK DanSteel grew. Slab shipments to NBH stood at 1.7 million tonnes, down 19% YoY due to the upgrade of the NLMK La Louvtere hot strip mill in HI 2021. Sales of finished products grew by 6% YoY to 11.2 million tonnes.

Sales in NLMK's "home" markets increased by 6% YoY to 11.4 million tonnes, as steel consumption in Russia and the US grew. Sales in export markets were down by 22%YoY to 5.2 million tonnes, due to the high baseline of 2020, when supplies were redirected to export markets.

Demand Cut in China & Auto Sector Impacts Nippon Steel Output

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    04 Feb, 2022, 5:01 am

Japan's Nippon Steel downgraded its projected consolidated crude steel production for the financial year ending 31 March 2022, to 44.80 million tonnes, down 2% from the 45.70 million tonnes forecast 2 November 2021, the second cut from an initial 46 million tonnes predicted in May 2021. The lower revision came after the steelmaker saw its crude steel output for October to December 2021 quarter fall 2.7% QoQ to 11.06 million tonnes from 11.37 million tonnes & projected January-March 2022 Quarters production fall to 10.60 million tonnes. Nippon Steel attributed the lowered forecast to lesser steel demand from China since the second half of 2021, and it also assumed that this would continue in 2022 under strong policy controls for carbon emissions. Another contributing factor stated was the drop in steel demand from the automotive industry as it continued to grapple semiconductor chip shortages.

Despite the lower output, however, company maintains that it will post an annual net profit of JPY 520 billion (USD 4.54 billion), swinging from a net loss of JPY 32.4 billion the year before, citing higher prices of steel. For the current FY, it expects steel prices to average JPY 117,000 per tonne, up 35.9% against JPY 86,100 per tonne in the previous FY.

Nippon Steel has reported a consolidated net profit of JPY 508 billion for April-December 2021, against a net loss of JPY 123 billion a year earlier, for the first time in three years.

Pasadena California based NASA spinoff company founded from technology developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology Amorphology Inc has partnered with Additive Technologies, a founding partner of Meltio which is an additive manufacturing company pioneering the development of affordable metal 3D printing systems. Together, Amorphology & AddiTec are developing the additive manufacturing of large steel strain wave gear flexsplines.

Additive manufacturing used to produce a 6-inch diameter strain wave gear flexspline from 17-4 PH steel. The part was manufactured using directed energy deposition and then precision-machined into the final shape. The prototype is compared to a common size-20 flexspline measuring approximately 2 inches in diameter. For larger flexsplines, additive manufacturing can provide significant cost savings and open the ability to tailor material properties.

Strain wave gears are a compact and zero backlash gearbox used in robotic arms and precision-motion mechanisms. They transmit torque through a geared thin-walled cup, hat, or band, called a flexspline. The flexspline has precise gear teeth and a flexible wall, a combination of qualities that drives the manufacturing costs of a strain wave gearbox. Because of their complexity, strain wave gears can account for a substantial portion of the cost of a six-degree-of-freedom 6DOF robotic arm.

Amorphology & AddiTec together have demonstrated a 6-inch diameter prototype of a strain wave gear flexspline printed in high-performance 17-4 precipitation hardened steel. The prototype was fabricated on a Haas CNC hybrid system running the Meltio Engine. The printed part was removed from the build-tray and then CNC machined into the precision shape. The process also allows for flexible and on-time production of a variety of large flexsplines without having to keep many diameters of stock in house.

German steel maker Salzgitter Group has achieved pre-tax profit of EUR 706.7 million in 2021 as compared to loss of EUR 196.4 million in 2020. The Strip Steel & Trading business units made major contributions to the substantial improvement in profit. Furthermore, the sections segment reported an outstanding result despite the massive increase in energy prices and the Technology Business Unit also significantly lifted its pre-tax profit. The result also includes a contribution of EUR 217.1 million from Aurubis AG. A countertrend emanated in particular from impairment of EUR 235.1 million in the Mannesmann Business Unit.

    Outlook

    ----------

Salzgitter aid “While we assess the probability of another pandemic-induced plunge in the economy as rather unlikely, virtually unquantifiable forecast risks consist of the extremely high energy costs and the threat of further price increases, also against the backdrop of the uncertainty surrounding the current geopolitical hazards. Moreover, as in recent years, we make reference to the fact that opportunities and risks from currently unforeseeable trends in selling prices, input material prices and capacity level developments, as well as exchange rate fluctuations, may considerably affect performance in the course of the financial year 2022. However, in view of the decidedly encouraging start to the year and the sustained, strong profit trend, above all in the strip steel business, Salzgitter anticipate the following for the Salzgitter Group in the financial year 2022

An increase in sales to just under EUR 11 billion as against EUR 9.8 billion in 2021

A pre-tax profit EBT of between EUR 600 million and EUR 750 million”

@AuManufacturing news reported that According to the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union NSW & ACT branch, the majority of the steel components for the Snowy 2.0 scheme in Australia will be built using imported steel shows that the federal government has no commitment to growing the Australian manufacturing industry, State ANWU secretary Mr Cory Wright told @AuManufacturing news “We hear constantly that Australian industry doesn’t have the capacity to make things, and that’s why governments turn to offshoring. But what we see in this instance is that there is no will from governments or businesses to build the capacity of our industries to meet procurement demands.”

Mr Wright said “Australia needed governments at all levels to commit to using local content, because when they do, our industries grow, and our workers can be upskilled. And when we skill up our young workers and retrain older ones, we are ensuring that these workers can plan for their futures thanks to good, secure jobs. Snowy 2.0 was meant to be a nation building project like its predecessor, but by ignoring procurement targets and failing to utilize Australian steel for the majority of the project, the government has shown that it does not care about the long-term impact of Snowy 2.0 on working people and families. We must put an end to the line of thought that the lowest-cost option is the better one. It stagnates opportunities and growth for industries, kills off innovation and starves working people and families of opportunities to gain skills that can support them for a lifetime. Offshoring and other ‘so-called efficiencies’ have killed off whole industries, decimating communities. We need to get back to being a country that makes things, with strong supply chains and a skilled workforce.”

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has long called for local content requirements on major infrastructure projects like Snowy 2.0 which was touted as an AUD 5 billion nation and company-building project when announced by the government.

Future Generation, a joint venture of Italy’s Webuild, Australian-based Clough and US-based Lane Construction, was created specifically to build Snowy 2.0, has informed Snowy Hydro that it intended to let a sub-contract for 7,000 tonnes of steel to ATB Riva Calzoni SpA of Italy for six steel-lined, high pressure penstocks up to 3.8 meters in diameter that feed water into the generating units & a contract for 2,800 tonnes of low pressure draft tube, collector tunnels and surge shafts would be let to Australian entities.

Danieli announced that for the expansion of their steel plant in Danapur in Karnataka, BMM Ispat had awarded a contract to Danieli Corus for a complete, 0.88 million tonne per year blast furnace complex in 2021. The blast furnace, the heart of the new complex, will have a 680 cubic meters working volume for a design capacity of 2,400-2,600 daily tonnes of hot metal. The furnace is designed to operate on a charge mix of 80% pellets and 20% lump ore, while the pulverized coal-injection system will he designed for injecting up to 250 kg/tHM. Importantly, the client has chosen to embark upon this expansion project based on modern Danieli Corus technologies for all areas of the blast furnace complex:

The unit was developed to minimize operating costs thanks to maximum availability and minimum maintenance. The distributor relies on hydraulic technology, and all components are engineered and manufactured to be failure-free, eliminating vulnerabilities of existing chute-based designs.

The replacement of the gas-cleaning system wet second stage with a filter bag-based dry second stage eliminates the requirement for large quantities of scrubbing water, while retaining maximum residual thermal energy in the top gas. Danieli Corus conditioning tower is the only proven solution to eliminate temperature spikes and protect the filter bags without producing excess moisture that could cause acid-accelerated corrosion downstream the system.

The Danapur plant is located in an iron ore-rich area in India’s Karnataka state, where BMM Ispat currently produces pellets, sponge iron and a variety of long products.
