EU Construction Industry to Grow by 2% YoY in 2022

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    05 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

European Steel Association EUROFER in latest Economic & Steel Market Outlook said that construction output in the EU rebounded by 5.9% in 2021 after the drop of 4.2% experienced in 2020. EUROFER said “Growth was fuelled by residential investment, boosted by low mortgage rates, despite expectations of rises in rates in connection with rises in government bond yields,- and generous housing and renovation supporting schemes in place in many Member States. Positive developments were seen also in other construction' investment, in particular in civil engineering. Its expansion should be stronger in the course of 2022, as governments are set to use it as a cyclical tool thanks also to NextGenerationEU programmes to bolster the economic recovery. However, the impact of these publicly funded construction schemes is becoming increasingly uncertain due to multiple downside factors that are casting shadows on the overall economic outlook & supply chain issues, war in Ukraine etc. In particular, the shortage of construction materials is becoming a source of concern.

EUROFER said “Overall construction activity should, however, continue to grow - albeit at rather low rates, mainly thanks to governmental housing supporting schemes, and public construction schemes. Civil engineering is expected to provide the strongest contribution to the construction sector's performance. This segment will also be supported by EU-wide public policies. Their effects have become increasingly uncertain and difficult to quantify, though, in light of the recent deterioration of the economic outlook due to the war in Ukraine and persisting supply chain issues. Nonresidential construction paid the highest toll to the pandemic in 2020 and also partly in 2021 with increasing vacancy rates, a trend that may continue as tele working has remained rather common in the post-pandemic scenario. The subdued business investment outlook remains unfavourable to investment in non-residential projects in the near future. The outlook for 2022 shows moderate growth of 2.3% which will further ease in 2023 to 1.5%.”

A discussion themed New Revival Policy-Mongolian Steel was held at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia to discuss and determine the solutions to the problems encountered in the realization of the Mongolian Steel Complex-I project. One of the core objectives of the Mongolian government’s New Revival Policy is to gradually build plants that process value added and import-substituting final products. In this regard, the project Mongolian Steel Complex-I is being implemented in order to produce cast steel products out of domestic iron ore and to satisfy the domestic market. Mongolian Deputy Prime Minister Mr S Amarsaikhan said “Industrial sector is the main driving force of the country’s economic development. Supporting the export of processed mining products, increasing the production of products that replace imports, and ensuring the independence and security of the economy are important for the development of Mongolia. Therefore, the Mongolian Steel Complex-I project is being implemented.”

Mr Amarsaikhan added “It will serve as one of the stepping stones to become a producer country instead of a consumer by opening the way for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises following heavy industry and creating about 1,900 jobs in the first instance. The government will continue to focus on solving the problems of infrastructure, such as energy and road transport, which limit the development of the industrial sector, ensuring coordination between sectors, and improving the legal environment.”

With the construction of the complex, cast steel products will be produced out of domestic iron ore and will meet more than 50% of domestic needs. It also is of high economic importance, such as stabilizing the price of basic materials in the construction industry and keeping the flow of foreign currency in Mongolia.

This is the first project to use 5G in the steel sector in Latin America. The partnership between Gerdau and Embratel aims to create an enabling digital infrastructure for the development of the steel industry of the future. The project developed by Embratel includes the installation of several towers on site to expand the scope of connectivity and automation possibilities, covering more than 8.3 million square meters. Embratel seeks to build an evolving infrastructure that makes it possible to introduce new cutting-edge technologies in a simplified manner. The rollout will take place at the Gerdau industrial plant in Ouro Branco, a Brazilian municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais in south-eastern Brazil.

The project is divided into three phases, starting with the installation of a private LTE 4G networks with a total capacity of 256 Mbps. At this stage, the covered area will be larger than the current one, making it possible to increase the scope of Industry 4.0 initiatives already adopted at the unit.

In the second phase, there will be a great evolution adding Claro's 5G, in the 3.5 GHz frequency, to the LTE 4G network. With 5G and 4G LTE, the plant will have a much higher capacity, totaling 3.8 Gbps. Ultra-low latency will provide more resiliency, availability and security for the site, as critical applications will not have shared infrastructure with the public network. Supported by the installed IT network and backbone, Gerdau will be able to expand its investments in more advanced multiple devices and machinery, such as autonomous and remote-controlled vehicles, in addition to the technology of digital twins, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence.

The third phase will involve the densification of the private LTE 4G and 5G network to provide even more combined capacity, reaching 4.8 Gbps, and expanding coverage to the entire operational extent of the plant.

The project includes licensed spectrum, without interference, and high security standards, as each connected machine will receive a unique SIMCard to access the network. With this, the authentication of the equipment will be automatic, without the need to use passwords for connection. This feature is critical to mitigating cyber security threats, especially on critical devices, which can pose risks to employees in the event of loss of control.

Sandbag Report Highlights Role of Steel Scrap in Decarbonization

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    05 Jul, 2022, 7:29 am

New research by Sandbag indicates that a better use of end of life steel objects would help to speed up the reduction of emissions from the sector in Europe, with the help of electrification. Compared to a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario which sees 30 million tonnes of steel scrap exported from Europe by 2030, the report indicates that a better allocation of scrap grades to the most suitable steel mills to process them, combined with a slight increase in scrap collection and only a small number of primary ore processing plants running on e.g. green hydrogen would achieve over 70% emission reductions. The study proposes to time the conversion of aging facilities using the blast furnace & basic oxygen furnace route into electric arc furnaces in sync with the facilities’ current relining calendar, 74% of which is due this decade, to reduce disruptions. Whereas the BF-BOF route can only use up to about 20% scrap, this could rise much higher if EAFs were used instead.

Scrap quality is known as a major obstacle to its increased use by European facilities, as good quality scrap is scarce in Europe. However, the report presumes that the quality of scrap available would increase if there was a market for it, as currently there is little incentive to keep impurity at a low level. In some places, high-purity shredded car parts are mixed with low-purity pieces because the demand is mostly for medium-grade scrap.

A large-scale switch to EAF steelmaking would create the demand needed for a more seggregated scrap market, allowing a better match of scrap grade with quality of products made by steel mills. However, the level of scrap quality is likely to drop with the use of more sophisticated products such as electric vehicles, which typically contain three times more copper than internal combustion engine vehicles. To prevent that from happening, important decisions must be made, e.g. regarding the design of new vehicles, to make the copper easy to separate.

Steel scrap with insufficient purity can also be blended with purer materials such as direct reduced iron, but that requires to use either natural gas or hydrogen. The real challenge is to ensure that all these inputs, as well as the electricity needed for the EAFs, are low-carbon. The policy framework should fit more closely with the needs, which relate more to access to carbon-free electricity and a better structured value chain of used steel products, than support at production plant level.

Sandbag is a non-profit think tank which uses data analysis to build evidence-based campaigns on climate policy. Sandbag’s research covers industrial decarbonisation, carbon pricing and climate governance in Europe. Sandbag was founded in 2008 in London to shine a light on what was really going on in emissions trading in the EU and to enable people to buy and remove the surplus carbon allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System. Sandbag started operating from Brussels in 2013, opening an office there to host our advocacy activities with EU institutions, then a legal entity in 2018, Sandbag Climate Campaign ASBL. In 2019, it was decided to fully dedicate Sandbag to EU climate policy from Brussels, while the UK-based entity, renamed ‘Ember’, would pursue the global power sector and coal phase-out work previously done by Sandbag. Swiss & German Company form Green Steel Alliance for Auto Steel

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    05 Jul, 2022, 7:35 am

Five Swiss and German companies have formed a partnership that aims to significantly reduce carbon footprint for an electromagnetic actuator used in the automotive & truck sector. The Swiss Steel Group with its Steeltec plant, the bright steel manufacturer Andernach & Bleck, the steel trading company Heine + Beisswenger Group, the electromagnet manufacturer Magnet-Schultz GmbH and the technology group ZF Friedrichshafen AG have founded a Green Steel Partnership. This is the first time that five partners have agreed to reduce their CO2 emissions as part of a pilot project along the entire value chain in the automotive industry.

With the project partnership, the companies aim to significantly reduce the product carbon footprint for an electromagnetic actuator used in the automotive & truck sector. Based on CO2 optimized steel production in the electric steel plant at Swiss Steel, improved material and energy use in the drawing process at Andernach & Bleck, the use of low CO2 pre-processing and logistics by Heine + Beisswenger, adapted turning and assembly processes at Magnet-Schultz and ZF, the partners are able to tap significant reduction potential. Thanks to a holistic approach across all purchased parts, including the complete assembly of the actuator, the end customer can obtain reliable information on the CO2 content of the components used.

For the calculation of the values, all partners involved make their product-related CO2 balances transparent. The savings achieved are based both on measures taken as part of the respective sustainability strategies and on product-related optimization processes. The 2019 CO2 emissions for the Dial Actuator product are compared with the current values based on measurements from a trial delivery.

In terms of products, a saving of 35% or 710 kilograms of CO2 pe tonne of steel used could be achieved in the total value added in 2022 compared with 2019. In terms of the annual volume of 300,000 dial actuators and the associated core, which is made of steel, it accounts for around 35 tonnes of CO2 savings per year. The additional measures planned by all partners will reduce CO2 emissions by a further 41% or 540 kilograms of CO2 pe tonne in 2024 compared with 2022.

Italian Researchers Use Steel Slag as Catalyst for Photosynthesis

One of the main concerns related to environmental impact of human activity is the carbon dioxide emission, which is responsible for the global warming. In the short term, the current fossil-based technologies which are the primary cause of CO2 production are unlikely to be replaced by more sustainable one. To achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2050, the World Community has given a strong incentive to renewable energies, but the search for processes aiming at capturing and valorizing carbon dioxide still remains of crucial importance. In this context, photo catalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O using solar energy, well-known as artificial photosynthesis, is considered one of the most elegant and investigated strategies. As a result, solar fuels and high-value chemicals such as formic acid, methane and methanol can be obtained. Of special interest is the production of formic acid, which is not only a valuable chemical (i.e. preservative and antibacterial agent), but also considered a hydrogen storage compound with potential application in fuel cells, being prompt to release H2 by thermal decomposition. Since CO2 is regenerated during this latter pathway, the concentration of the greenhouse gas is not reduced in the overall process.

Researchers from Italian CNR-ICCOM-SS Bari’s Caterina Fusco, Angelo Nacci & Lucia D’Accolti, University of Bari’s Chemistry Department Michele Casiello, Pasquale Pisani, Antonio Monopoli, Angelo Nacci & Lucia D’Accolti, CNR-NANOTEC-SS Bari’s Fiorenza Fanelli, CNR-ICCOM’s Werner Oberhauser and Acciaierie d’Italia’s Rosella Attrotto in a research paper have unveiled possibilities of steel slag as low-cost catalyst for artificial photosynthesis to convert CO2 and water into hydrogen and methanol.

Photo reduction of CO2 with sunlight to produce solar fuels, also named artificial photosynthesis, is considered one of the most attractive strategies to face the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases and achieving climate neutrality. Following an approach in line with the principles of the circular economy, the low-cost catalytic system based on an industrial by-product such as steel slag was assessed, which was properly modified with nanostructured palladium on its surface in order to make it capable of promoting the conversion of CO2 into methanol and hydrogen through a two-stage process of photo reduction and thermal conversion having formic acid as the intermediate. Notably, for the first time in the literature steel slag is used as photo reduction catalyst.

Pristine steel slag, supplied by AcciaieriedItalia’s Taranto Plant, consists of two crystalline phases, namely CaAl2O413 and Fe3O414 in a 65 and 35 ratio respectively, based on a Rietveld profile refinement. Nanostructured palladium was deposited onto the slag by a wet impregnation method15 affording the nanocomposite Pd@slag labelled as catalyst.

In conclusion, these preliminary studies demonstrate that a catalyst material composed by steel slag decorated with Pd structured can convert CO2 and water into methanol and hydrogen via formic acid as intermediate, through a two-step reaction involving a photochemical and thermal reaction. Steel slag has been involved for the first time in the photo reduction of CO2, most probably by virtue of the iron impurities, while Palladium account for the thermal conversion of formic acid into hydrogen and methanol.

This process is important not only for matching the Circular Economy principles making use of wastes as both reagents CO2 and catalysts slag, but also for producing in high selectivity an attractive storage medium such as formic acid. In fact, although HCOOH contains only 4.4% hydrogen by mass, it is a precious intermediate because is liquid at room temperature and therefore easy to handle and transport, commercially available on a large scale, and the by-product of H2 release, carbon dioxide, can be trapped and either recycled or used as a C1 source for other chemicals. Studies are in progress to ascertain the exact mechanism with which palladium converts formic acid into methanol and hydrogen.

Korea Times reported that POSCO Holdings has a contract to buy 100% stake in Daejeon-based manufacturer and supplier of SiOx Tera Technos for USD 36.6 million making it the newest affiliate of POSCO. The move is aimed at fortifying POSCO's battery business, mostly through the early and full commercialization of SiOx, a newer and higher-performing material that boosts energy efficiency by about four times compared to graphite, the currently used material for lithium-ion anodes. POSCO said “POSCO Group, the only owner of a rechargeable battery material supply chain in the world, will be able to strengthen its anode material portfolio. We will be able to reduce our dependence on China for key material imports in the coming years."

POSCO Holdings plans to begin facility investments before the year's end to mass produce and sell the material within the first half of 2024.

Established in 2017, Tera Technos is best known for high-thermal conductivity technology boasting productivity more than three times higher than its market peers. Thermal conductivity refers to the ability of a given material to conduct or transfer heat. The startup managed to lower volume expansion risks in large part by reducing the size of silicon particles, thereby increasing silicon content in anode materials.

An increasing number of local and global battery manufacturers are rushing to develop the silicon-based anode material, with the market expected to grow 39% every year by 2030. The next-generation material takes up less than 5% of a rechargeable battery's content at present, but the figure is expected to double to over 10% by 2025 and to over 25% by 2030.

Vallourec’s VAM HTTC CLEANWELL Used in Middle East

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    06 Jul, 2022, 6:13 am

Seamless pipe leader Vallourec announced that VAM HTTC was successfully run with CLEANWELL in a customer’s offshore and onshore fields in the Middle East, encompassing several types of applications from injector to producer wells including challenging Extended Reach Drilling designs. In total, over 1,500 joints, equivalent to more than 18 kilometers, have been used so far, which were successfully prepared and run in-hole with no rejects and presented remarkable stability during make-up. More than 1,500 joints of 6 /8 inches24 pound per feet L80 VAM HTTC-NA SC73 CLEANWELL were run in the operator’s offshore and onshore rigs. Vallourec’s fast and smooth preparation was mainly due to the absence of dope cleaning and re-application and zero rejects after storage thanks to its dope-free solution CLEANWELL.

The operator’s offshore and onshore applications require extreme high torque and tight clearance connections especially in case of specific well designs with lateral strings over 20,000 feet for some. These are among the longest horizontal wells in the world with a recent record of 45,000 feet drilled length. The operator’s highly technological completion plan can include several control devices and complex lower completion architecture accounting for over 20 different compartments in some cases.

To meet such a challenging scenario and respect the customer’s specific requirements, Vallourec qualified its dope free solution, CLEANWELL, on VAM HTTC connections with Special Clearance. CLEANWELL® is a non-polluting coating applied in the mill to threaded connections replacing both storage and running compounds. The pipes were produced at Vallourec’s mill in France then stored and rig-prepped at Vallourec Tubular Services Abu Dhabi, Vallourec’s dedicated yard in the UAE.

The use of the CLEANWELL increases efficiency by providing a rig-ready solution, reducing handling operations and associated HSE risks, and improving protection against corrosion and galling while avoiding environmental contamination due to compounds.
