New Pipelines to Support European Tube & Pipe Sector

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    06 Jul, 2022, 6:19 am

European Steel Association EUROFER in latest Economic & Steel Market Outlook said that the European tube sector rebounded by 11% YoY, after the severe drop of 13% experienced in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. EUROFER said “During 2020 output in the EU steel tube industry was heavily impacted by the industrial stoppages due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Likewise for other steel-using sectors, the rebound seen over the first three quarters of 2021 eased somewhat in the fourth quarter as a result of severe global supply chain issues. The expected disruptions linked to the war in Ukraine have further delayed ongoing projects and impacted the availability of materials. In the longer-term, demand for large welded tubes from the oil and gas sector should not improve substantially, due to the effects of war sanctions and consequent disruptions in oil and gas supply chain.”

EUROFER added “The recent recovery of global oil demand including oil prices, although not yet at levels comparable to other commodities like natural gas, is not expected to boost the launch or the implementation of new pipelines in the short-term. On the other hand, demand from the construction sector is set to recover a bit more robustly, whereas tube demand from the automotive and engineering sectors is forecast to remain relatively weaker. In addition, import pressure on steel tube markets in the EU will remain high, particularly for the commodity segment.”

Swiss Steel Inks Hydropower Pact with Axpo Holding

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    06 Jul, 2022, 6:29 am

Lucerne Emmenbrücke Switzerland headquartered Swiss Steel Group has reached another milestone on the road to decarbonization. Steeltec, the Group’s Swiss plant located in Emmenbrücke, is now relying exclusively on Swiss hydropower to produce its special steels. A game-changing strategic partnership was also concluded with Axpo Holding AG. Under the terms of the contract, Axpo will supply the steel mill in Emmenbrücke until 2024 with electricity certifiably generated at hydropower stations belonging to Axpo’s fleet of Swiss power plants and at a contractually agreed price. In concluding this contract, Swiss Steel Group is betting not only on sustainability and green electricity, but is also being given the security the Group needs for long-term planning regarding electricity costs and ensures that the Group’s already low emissions can be reduced even further than the industry average.

The Swiss Steel Group has decided to pursue the electric arc route exclusively in its steel mills. Owing to the use of scrap, decarbonized energy and a functioning cyclic economy, the Group’s emissions are around 78% below the industry average.

The ecological footprint of the Emmenbrücke plant is the lowest within Swiss Steel Group. In 2020, the steel mill only emitted 63 kg of CO2 per ton of crude steel produced in scopes 1 and 2. This value is good compared to the industry average of around 1890 kg of CO2 produced per ton of crude steel. In switching to electricity provided by Swiss hydropower, Steeltec is using not just local energy, but also lowering its numbers further. Customers profit from rolled and bright steel material with an outstanding ecological value proposition that lets them noticeably reduce their upstream footprint.

The Switzerland locations, however, are not the only Group sites using renewable energy. The steel mill in Canada and bright steel production in Düsseldorf, Germany are also producing steel entirely with electricity from renewable sources. Production in Germany and France is also switching to renewable energy to meet customer demands.

South Korean steel giant POSCO’s IT & engineering arm POSCO ICT will upgrade smart factory system by converging digital twin technology to test various technologies in virtual space. POSCO ICT will incorporate 3D simulation, visualization and control interface technologies into a smart factory system to actualize the operation of autonomous production that assists optimal decision-making in various areas including facility and quality management. The company will first apply a digital twin-based smart factory system to its steel mill in the southern city of Gwangyang and expand it to other sites.

A digital twin-based smart factory system would help reduce the time and cost required for quality improvement by simulating the quality impact of changes in operating conditions in advance. For facility management, pre-maintenance work through 3D modeling can be performed to shorten the working time. A predictive maintenance system can be implemented in connection with a facility abnormality detection model, and it is possible to visualize and simulate the location of field workers to block risk factors in advance and to derive optimal scenarios for carbon reduction by simulating energy usage and carbon generation.

A digital twin is a virtual clone of an object or an infrastructure. Digital twins are frequently used as testing grounds for new technologies or other elements to find out the results of real-life situations simulated in a virtual space. Business operators can test their products under various conditions without causing an irreversible effect in real life.

Based on a smart factory platform called PosFrame, POSCO ICT has established smart factory systems in manufacturing sites. In March 2019, the company signed a cooperation agreement with Hyundai Robotics, a domestic industrial robot maker, to create a 3D simulation-based consulting and analysis service for smart factories that can predict and manage problems such as machine breakdowns. Published on :
    06 Jul, 2022, 7:35 am

A Vision for the Future of UK Steel Production' will be unveiled at Broadway House in London on 12 July 2022. The report was developed in close collaboration with BEIS and the trade unions at the request of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary Mr Kwasi Kwarteng in his role as Steel Council Chair. In it, the steel sector sets out how it could decarbonize by 2035, the technologies that will need to be deployed, and the policy framework that must be developed in order to secure the future of a net-zero steel sector in the UK.

British Steel is working towards a phased reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, 2035 and 2050, in line with UK commitments to the Paris Agreement. British Steel’s Safety, Health, Environment & Quality Director Mr Chris Vaughan said “The steel we make can play a central role in transitioning to a low-carbon, circular economy and we’ve ambitious plans to invest in a range of technologies to reduce the carbon intensity of our operations, with solutions that are globally recognized and accepted. We publicly launched these plans in October 2021 under our Low-Carbon Roadmap and we’re now undertaking a pioneering feasibility study into switching from natural gas to green hydrogen as a fuel source for re-heating furnaces. If the study is successful, we will undertake an industrial-scale demonstration which could see the technology developed and rolled out across all our operations including our main manufacturing base in Scunthorpe. It could also be adopted by other UK steelmakers. Embracing new technology and ways of working will help our drive to reduce emissions and support clean growth. The ‘Net Zero Steel’ report is a significant step forward for our industry and I look forward to speaking at the launch.”

Mr Chris will be joined at the event by Mr Kwasi Kwarteng, Climate Change Committee Chief Economist Mr Mike Thompson, UK Steel Director General Mr Gareth Stace and the report author UK Steel’s Energy & Climate Change Policy Manager Mr Frank Aaskov.

    07 Jul, 2022, 6:22 am

The US International Trade Commission has determined that revoking the existing antidumping and countervailing duty orders on imports of stainless steel plate in coils from Belgium, South Africa, and Taiwan would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. As a result of the Commission’s affirmative determinations, the existing orders on imports of this product from Belgium, South Africa, and Taiwan will remain in place.

The fourth sunset review concerning Stainless Steel Plate from Belgium, South Africa, and Taiwan was instituted on 1 December 2021 on request from ATI Flat Rolled Products Holdings, North American Stainless & Outokumpu Stainless. US DOC determined on 4 April 2022 that revocation of the Orders would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of dumping, and the magnitude of the margins of dumping likely to prevail would be weighted-average margins up to the following percentages:

    Belgium - 8.54%

    South Africa - 41-63%

    Taiwan - 10.20%

The Uruguay Round Agreements Act requires the Department of Commerce to revoke an antidumping or countervailing duty order, or terminate a suspension agreement, after five years unless the Department of Commerce and the USITC determine that revoking the order or terminating the suspension agreement would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of dumping or subsidies and of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time.

Located in the Pre-salt Santos Basin, Buzios is among the largest deep water oil and gas fields in the world. Production is expected to reach 2 million barrels per day by 2030, up from a current 0.7 million barrels per day. This equals approximately 70% of today’s total production in Brazil.

Australian Anti-Dumping Commission, in sunset review with period of review of 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, has decided to continue antidumping duty on electric resistance welded pipe and tube made of carbon steel, hollow structural sections, from China, South Korea, Malaysia & Taiwan and the countervailing duty orders from China.

    AD Duty

    Taiwan - 23.5%

    Malaysia – 20.8%

    South Korea – 13.8%

    China - 1-30.4%

    Countervailing Duty

    China - 3.3-26.3%

The sunset reviews were launched in September 2021, upon request by Austube Mills & Orrcon Manufacturing Pty.

Finish types for the goods include inline galvanized, pre-galvanized, hot-dipped galvanized and non-galvanized HSS. Sizes of the goods are, for circular products, those exceeding 21 millimeters up to and including 165.1 mm in outside diameter and, for oval, square and rectangular products those with a perimeter up to and including 1277.3 mm. The products subject to the reviews fall under the HS codes 7306.30.00 (statistical code 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37), 7306.50.00 (statistical codes 45), 7306.61.00 (statistical codes 21, 22, 25, 90), 7306.69.00 (statistical codes 10) & 7306.90.00 (statistical codes 12)

Categories of HSS excluded from the goods are conveyor tube; precision RHS with a nominal thickness of less than 1.6 mm and air heater tubes to Australian Standard 2556. The following goods are excluded from the anti-dumping measures:

Conveyor tube made for high speed idler rolls on conveyor systems, with inner and outer fin protrusions removed by scarfing (not exceeding 0.1mm on outer surface and 0.25mm on inner surface), and out of round standards (i.e. ovality) which do not exceed 0.6mm in order to maintain vibration free rotation and minimum wind noise during operation)

Precision RHS with a nominal thickness of less than 1.6 mm (i.e. not used in structural applications)

Stainless steel CHS and RHS sections
