BlueScope Consolidates Legacy Systems with Microsoft’s D 365

    31 Jan, 2023, 4:35 am

Digital solutions have become increasingly integral to Australian steel leader BlueScope’s strategy. However, in recent years, the company had realized that many of its existing enterprise resource planning and other legacy systems were falling short in supporting its business initiatives. Microsoft has reported that after realizing many of BlueScope’s existing ERP systems weren’t meeting business needs, the team searched for a cloud-based solution to consolidate multiple applications. BlueScope Australia’s Steel Product IT department’s Head of Strategy and Transformation Mr Jagdeep Singh said “Improving the experience of our customers and employees, and providing a single view across our supply chain, was either not possible or required increasing levels of complexity. For instance, in Australia we have over 300 applications supporting our Coated and Industrial Products business. Many of these systems are point-to-point connected, with black and white screens, making it very difficult for our employees to use and for our IT teams to maintain and untangle, let alone consider any enhancements. Our aging and custom-built IT systems are also becoming increasingly costly to maintain.”

Most importantly, BlueScope’s ERP transformation project is the first step in improving its customer experience. Mr Singh said “Key business processes such as accurate pricing, easy quoting and timely, consistent information about orders and deliveries are not efficiently met by our legacy systems. We were looking for these capabilities to be part of the new solution.”

After evaluating nine ERP solutions, BlueScope selected Microsoft Dynamics 365 with the Crowe Metals Accelerator. The company also teamed up with Microsoft partner DXC Technology to implement and customize the software for the BlueScope environment. In the first phase of the project, BlueScope has decommissioned 13 legacy systems and implemented a new self-service online portal, based on Microsoft Power Platform, to expand customers’ access to information.

Mr Singh said “By deploying a new solution, we will see consolidation of our applications and simplification of our technology landscape by the decommissioning of multiple legacy systems. This would streamline business processes and provide a modern technology foundation for its Australian Coated and Industrial Products supply chain and customer-facing systems. This foundation would in turn support the business’s growth and ability to innovate.”

BlueScope has on boarded around 300 users onto its ERP system to date, with plans to add another 250 in future phases of the project. The company also has a large number of customers using its new customer portal called SteelConnect.

Once the entire supply chain for BlueScope’s Australian Coated and Industrial Products business is using D365 with CMA, the company will be positioned to integrate new and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced and predictive analytics, and back-office robotics to automate manual processes currently performed by employees.

World’s leading buyer of old ships for recycling GMS said “Following a virtually inert 2022 and a slightly busier start to 2023 at the various recycling destinations, much of the Far East was off celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year holidays this week and it has expectedly been a quieter period, in terms of sales and activity. A larger number of container vessels have so far been sold for recycling at the start of the year, and we are beginning to see signs that older dry bulk vessels with surveys due may follow suit in the near future as well. Additionally, following a glut of tanker vessels concluded for recycling at the beginning of 2022, this is the one segment that is still flying and it wouldn’t be entirely unsurprising to see any meaningful recycling take place from this particular sector any time soon.”

GMS said “Prices and demand have also started to bounce back across Indian sub-continent markets, except Pakistan, and Turkey, although whether Pakistan and Bangladesh can open LCs to import units remains an ongoing question of serious concern.”

GMS added “Meanwhile, after a year of sustained instability and turmoil in 2022, currencies, except in Pakistan, have finally started to settle at their current lows and there is growing optimism, certainly in Bangladesh, that talks regarding an IMF loan may bring some much needed liquidity into the country so that end buyers can open LCs and import tonnage once again.”

GMS also said “Finally, steel plate prices in India, Bangladesh and Turkey were on a slightly upward trajectory this week other than Pakistan, where plate prices and the Pakistani Rupee recorded one of the worst plummets in recent memory.”

GMS demo rankings – India/Pakistan/Bangladesh – Week 04 unchanged WoW

Pakistan’s Steel Industry on brink of Collapse due to LCs

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    31 Jan, 2023, 4:41 am

The Nation reported that Pakistan’s steel industry is facing a critical situation as the State Bank of Pakistan continues to fail in opening letters of credit, leading to the closure of numerous steel businesses and widespread job losses. The lack of LCs has caused a severe shortage of raw materials, leading to production delays and financial losses for companies. The steel industry is calling on the government and the State Bank of Pakistan to take immediate and drastic action to resolve the crisis. They are demanding that the State Bank of Pakistan open LCs at a curtailed level declared through a policy or circular as soon as possible to ensure the timely import of raw materials and the continuation of production. They also urge the government to provide significant financial assistance to the industry to help mitigate the catastrophic losses caused by the crisis.

According to Pakistan Association of Large Steel Producers Secretary General Mr Wajid Bukhari “It is estimated that a total of approximately 7.5 million jobs are at stake because if there is no steel we will witness the subsequent closure of cement and all construction allied industries within a few weeks. Even during COVID-19, steel industry was categorized as an essential industry.”

State Bank of Pakistan’s inability to open LCs is reportedly due to a shortage of foreign currency reserves, leading to delays in the import of essential raw materials such as scrap steel and additives to manufacture steel indigenously. In addition, the shortage of raw materials has led to a significant increase in the prices of steel products, making them unaffordable for many consumers. Steel bar prices have surpassed PKR 275,000 per tonne (USD 1020) but if the shortage persists, experts believe that the prices can easily cross PKR 300,000 per tonne.

According to industry estimates, the steel sector in Pakistan employs over 200,000 people directly and has an annual production capacity of over 5 million tonnes.

    31 Jan, 2023, 4:53 am

Global News has reported that USW has confirmed that around 100 steelworkers at the Evraz North America plant in Regina & Camrose are going to be laid off. Evraz North America spokesperson said “Unfairly traded imports continue to negatively impact its Canadian operations. High volumes of cheap imports are flooding the Canadian market, making it difficult to compete for business. A lot of those imports are being sold below our cost which is making it very difficult to compete in the domestic steel industry. Due to these imports, and starting next month, Evraz North America will make production adjustments that will regrettably result in layoffs at its Canadian facilities. We can expect in Regina we’re going to have over 100 people impacted by this and in Camrose likely over 30 people.”

USW 5890 acting president Mr Ryan Mckenzie said “We had a meeting with the company Friday and they advised us there’s going to be a cutback on the pipe side of the plant laying off approximately 100 employees. Mr Mckenzie said the company has advised the union the layoffs come amid increased international competition. He said “Inventory levels for the customers they do have, rising interest rates, they’re worried about softening of steel prices, and a lot of foreign pipe in the market that’s undercutting what they’re doing.”

Germany’s leading steel processor & distributor Klöckner & Co, which regards the decarbonization of industry as a major opportunity for itself and its customers, following the introduction of CO2 categorizations for steel, aluminum and stainless steel products and the launch of sales for CO2-reduced products under the umbrella brand Nexigen, is now taking another significant step as a new service, in which customers can now have the individualized Product Carbon Footprint calculated and supplied for almost every one of the around 200,000 Klöckner products.

Through the Nexigen PCF Algorithm, customers can now reliably and seamlessly incorporate the emissions data they receive into their calculations. This enables them to comply with regulatory requirements at an early stage, measure their own sustainability targets and also show the footprint of their products to their customers. At the same time, they contribute to the transformation of the supply chain.

The numerous advantages of the PCF have also convinced Siemens Smart Infrastructure and ZF, two long-standing strategic partners of Klöckner & Co For this reason, both technology groups have already agreed with Klöckner & Co subsidiary Becker Stahl-Service to have PCFs calculated in the future, initially for flat steel products. At Siemens, this includes at first all deliveries to the Cham and Frankfurt sites in Germany.

The PCF records all emissions of the product down to the kilogram, from raw material extraction to delivery to the customer's factory gate, cradle to customer entry gate. These are determined with the help of the independently certified Nexigen PCF Algorithm, which is specially developed by Klöckner & Co in cooperation with Boston Consulting Group. Thus, CO2 emissions become transparent and visible. The steel distributor is thus further expanding its pioneering role in the transformation of the steel industry and supporting its customers in building sustainable value chains.

In the future, customers will be able to decide directly on the PCF when selecting their desired product. After delivery of the goods, they will receive the kilogram value of the greenhouse gas emissions incurred, including all important details such as batch or delivery number, by means of a digital Product Carbon Footprint Declaration. In this way, Klöckner & Co ensures that the emissions generated during transport from the Klöckner branch to the respective customer location are also taken into account.

In determining the PCF, Klöckner & Co takes into account all process steps from raw material extraction and production to processing, storage and delivery of its products. The calculation method of the Nexigen PCF Algorithm has been certified by TÜV SÜD and complies with ISO standard 14067, 14040 and 14044, as well as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Wanzek & Palmer in Court over EVRAZ NA Project Delay

ENR has reported that EVRAZ North America’s builder Wanzek Construction & the contractor Palmer North America hired to expand Rocky Mountain Steel facility in Pueblo in Colorado to produce lengths of steel rail that were previously not available from US-based plants are accusing each other of breach of contract in a federal lawsuit. In a complaint filed in US District Court in Denver, Palmer North America accuses Wanzek Construction of creating delays immediately after executing the contract. The lawsuit alleges that Wanzek Construction failed to submit a work schedule by a deadline and the schedule it later provided had not been integrated with procurement and contained errors and after falling behind schedule, Wanzek Construction repeatedly refused to prepare a recovery schedule

However, Wanzek Construction alleges in a counterclaim that Palmer North America was actually responsible for the delays, claiming the owner did not turn over the site by the date they had agreed on. It said “When Wanzek Construction finally got site access, it found the site preparation contractor had not completed work sufficiently. Wanzek Construction removed more than 70,000 cubic yard of earth from the site before it began construction. Palmer also failed to meet the deadline to turn over design and engineering for the project. As of this month, the design had gone through numerous revisions and is still incomplete, according to the counterclaim.”

Palmer North America signed USD302 million contract in May 2021 with Fargo North Dakota based Wanzek Construction to build the long rail plant expansion of its EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel facility in Pueblo. The project was originally scheduled to complete in February. As of December, Wanzek says work was about 48% complete. The contractor estimates that work would not finish until February 2024, and at a greater cost. The price of its contracts with submitted change orders now is USD 424 million, and Wanzek estimates the total cost will exceed USD 600 million.

In a response to the counterclaim, Palmer reiterates its argument that Wanzek is to blame for the delays.
