    8 Feb, 2023, 6:23 am

Soo Today has reported that Canadian flat steel maker Algoma Steel has been given another extension on one of the three major oil spills since 2019 signaling that as long as the ministry will keep agreeing to provide time extensions, the court has been granting the motion. Algoma Steel was back in court with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks on 1 February but both parties agreed to another extension. Algoma Steel’s next court appearance is 12 April 2023.

On 18 October 2019, there was a rupture of a steam drain line which was located below an electrical room in our coke making by-products plant, which resulted in a loss of power to the BP. In accordance with our emergency procedures, the coke oven gas bleeders were lit to flare the coke oven gas. Additionally, the loss of power caused the coke making south raw liquor tank and the tar running tanks to overflow. Raw liquor was conveyed to the main water filter plant ia a sewer located in the BP. This resulted in effluent exceedances at the MWFP for phenol, ammonia and total cyanide and a toxicity failure for rainbow trout. The incident remains under investigation by MECP.”

The first power loss that caused a spill on 9 March 2019 caused 65-Million liters of waste oil to be spilled in the St Mary’s River. This spill on 18 October 2019, we do not know the extent of damages to the local ecosystems as of yet. The last spill in June of last year has not been calculated by the ministry or Algoma Steel. The estimated amount of waste oil ranges from 10,000 to 40,000 liters.

    8 Feb, 2023, 6:23 am

Local media Wort has reported that Liberty Steel has rejected an acquisition offer for its Dudelange galvanizing mill in Luxembourg from National Credit and Investment Company SNCI. LCGB union Deputy Secretary General Mr Robert Fornieri said “We're nowhere to sell the site at the moment. Local management says it is mainly informed by the press. The chairman of the works council also explains that he doesn't know any more. This is outrageous and is becoming more and more confusing!”

Mr Fornieri added “Management is working on a restart set for the month of May with a plan for resumption, but I don't believe it too much anymore, they have already indicated us resumption for all months of the year.”

Ministry of Economy has recently announced the GFC Alliance group has rejected the government's offer. It had said “The sale would be made through the SNCI. SNCI would purchase the assets of Liberty Steel and then resell them to one of the industrial buyers that the Department is in contact with. A first such proposal from the ministry was rejected by Liberty Steel while a counter-proposal is pending.”

The LCGB representative is now waiting for February 24, the date by which a buyer must be found for the Liège-based Liberty Steel company. Last December, the Liège Company Court upheld the decision to initiate legal restructuring proceedings.

The Dudelange mill, which produces hot-dip galvanized coil, has been idled for weeks

Conclave Lays Road Map for Decarbonization of Indian Steel Sector

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    8 Feb, 2023, 6:26 am

The Solar Quarter has reported that Conclave on Transitioning Towards Green Steel organized by the Minerals & Metals Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 4 February 2023 has highlighted that with Kalyani Steels becoming the first Green Steel producer of India, all major Indian steel manufacturers are now beginning to transition towards Green Steel but want cheap supplies of Green Power and Green Hydrogen to make the transition financially viable.

Ministry of Steel’s Director Ms Neha Verma in her address stressed that considering the rate of growth of Indian economy, demand & production of steel will increase in India but so will emissions. She said “Indian Steel production capacity is likely to increase to 300 million tonnes per year from existing capacity of 155 million ton per year by 2030 and to around 500 million tonnes per year by 2047. Hence the Government of India is now emphasizing on Green growth, which has also been the highlight of the recently presented Budget.”

She appealed to the Industry to invest more in R & D and use innovative technologies rather than only relying on capital intensive technologies like Green Hydrogen, which may take years to become feasible. Ms Verma enumerated 5 ways for decarbonizing the steel sector

    1. Energy Efficiency

    2. Use of Renewable Energy

    3. Input Material efficiency

    4. Use of Green Hydrogen

    5. Carbon Capture & Storage. She appealed to the Industry to invest more in R & D and use innovative technologies rather than only relying on capital intensive technologies like Green Hydrogen, which may take years to become feasible.

Kalyani Steels MD Mr R K Goyal explained the success story of his company as India’s first Green Steel producer. He advised steel manufacturers to analyze the emission generation at each stage of the steel manufacturing process and try to reduce it. He informed that 55% of the total steel produced in India was through Electric Arc Furnace & Induction Furnace route, which can be easily decarbonized by using Green Energy or Green Hydrogen.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Facing Power & Logistics Hurdles

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    8 Feb, 2023, 6:24 am

Ukraine’s largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih hopes for an improvement in the situation with power supply in the first half of this year and an increase in production from the current 25% to 50% of the plant's capacity. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih CEO Mr Mauro Longobardo told reporters “We can't produce more than 25% because we don't have enough power. As soon as we have power, we can increase production and reach 50%. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is currently operating at 25% in ore mining and steel production and consumes about 125 MW, compared to the pre-war typical consumption level of about 450 MW.”

Mr Longobardo added that after the recent decision of the government, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih started importing electricity and is currently quite satisfied with the result, although the price of imports adds a negative impact on the cost.

He also said that if there is sufficient power supply, further restrictions of 50% of capacity are already related to logistics. As Longobardo said, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is actively developing new routes alternative to the pre-war maritime ones, and preliminary new directions to Poland and southern Ukraine will ensure 50% of production work. According to him, without the resumption of operation of the main ports of Ukraine, the plant will not be able to either export products or ensure coal imports. Longobardo said that AMKR is currently operating entirely on Ukrainian coal, as the operation of the traditional coal import route from Kazakhstan from another ArcelorMittal's subsidiary is currently interrupted.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is the largest producer of rolled steel in Ukraine. It specializes in the production of long products, in particular rebar and wire rod.

EU’s CBAM to Accelerate Decarbonization in China

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    8 Feb, 2023, 6:24 am

China Dialogue has reported that although China is the EU’s largest trading partner, CBAM in its current form will have limited impacts on the country’s exports to the EU but it may to act as an external incentive for China’s national ETS to grow so as to offset some long-term impacts. The mechanism may motivate Chinese policymakers to improve the national carbon-accounting system, start obliging certain companies to pay for their emissions and speed up the expansion of the national carbon market

Launched in July 2021, China’s national ETS currently covers the power sector only. While the scheme has largely reached its initial goals of setting up a trading system and raising basic awareness of emissions trading, it faces various challenges, such as underwhelming trading volumes and a low carbon pricing point. There is a consensus among experts that CBAM might encourage the market to grow.

An analysis published in China Dialogue in 2021 had found that the mechanism would only affect cement, aluminium, fertilizers and iron and steel, which together represented less than 2% of China’s exports into the EU in 2019.

European Union have negotiators agreed in December to charge a carbon border tax on certain imports into the bloc, beginning in 2026.The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism will require non-EU companies to pay a levy on some emissions intensive products to make up the difference between the carbon price in their origin countries and that of the EU emissions trading system, the bloc’s key climate policy tool. During a transition period from October 2023 to December 2025, non-EU manufacturers will only be required to report their emissions. After that, a levy will be brought in gradually from 2026 to 2034, meaning EU importers will have to purchase certificates equivalent to the weekly EU carbon price.

The mechanism will initially cover six categories of products: iron and steel, cement, aluminium, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen.

    8 Feb, 2023, 6:24 am

German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp is celebrating 50 years of operations of blast furnaces Schwelgern 1 in Duisburg Plant in Germany shaping the skyline of Duisburg-Marxloh. Schwelgern 1 blast furnace in Duisburg was inaugurated by the then August-Thyssen Hütte on 6 February 1973. With a hearth diameter of 14 meters and a capacity of 4,200 cubic meters, blast furnace 1 set new standards in 1972 in terms of size and performance. After its relining in 2021, the black giant is back at the cutting edge and will be on its sixth furnace campaign.

More than 70,000 cubic meters of concrete and 38,000 tonnes of steel were used in building the blast furnace

Despite the imminent move away from blast furnace technology, Schwelgern 1 was once again brought back to the state of the art in 2021 for the transitional period. After a three-month shutdown and the investment of a sum running into the mid-double-digit millions, thyssenkrupp Steel launched the steel colossus onto its sixth and thus probably final furnace campaign in October 2021

As part of the transformation to carbon-neutral steelmaking, the coal-fired blast furnaces will be replaced by direct reduction plants operating with hydrogen. Thyssenkrupp Steel plans to place the order for a first plant shortly. Then the "black giant" will also take its well-deserved "retirement" after its last campaign.

JFE Steel to Expand CRNO Electrical Steel Capacity

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    8 Feb, 2023, 6:25 am

Japan’s second largest steelmaker JFE Steel, which is expanding the electrical steel sheet capacity of its West Japan Works in Kurashiki Area for startup targeted at the first half of the fiscal year starting in April 2024, is now planning an additional expansion targeted at a startup in the fiscal year beginning April 2026.

The additional expansion, which will cost some JPY 50.0 billion, will triple the works’ current capacity for top-grade non-oriented electrical steel sheets used in the main engine motors of electric vehicles. The current expansion, first announced in April 2021 and costing some JPY 49.0 billion, will double the works’ existing capacity for top-grade non-oriented electrical steel sheet.

The electrification of automobiles is accelerating amid the global push toward carbon neutrality. The demand for high-grade non-oriented electrical steel sheet products used in the drive motors of electric vehicles is expected to continue expanding in parallel with the further tightening of global environmental regulations. In response, JFE Steel has decided to further expand its production capacity to accommodate this rising demand.

Electrical steel sheet, which contains additives such as silicon and aluminum, offers excellent magnetic properties including high magnetic flux density and low iron loss. Two types of sheet are available. Non-oriented electrical steel sheet, which offers excellent magnetic properties that are nearly uniform in all directions, is used in the iron cores of motors. Grain-oriented electrical steel sheet, which exhibits superior magnetic properties in a single (rolling) direction, is used in the iron cores of power and distribution transformers.

JFE Steel expects to continue expanding its supply capacity for both types of electrical steel sheet in anticipation of further demand increases as automobiles become more electric, energy use becomes more efficient, and renewable energy is adopted more widely.

Turkish scrap silenced as Iskenderun mills suspend output
    233 Views

Activity in Turkey’s scrap market is almost zero as neither mills nor suppliers are talking about business in the aftermath of Monday’s massive earthquake, which has left thousands dead and more trying to survive. Mills in the Iskenderun area, a major production hub, have halted production.

Although there are rumours about a sharp decrease in scrap prices, this has not been confirmed by the buy or sell sides.

Commenting on the current situation, Turkish Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD) general secretary Veysel Yayan tells Kallanish: “No mill in the [earthquake-hit] region is operating under current conditions. Mills will start doing due diligence tomorrow. While no significant damage has been reported to production facilities as they are made of structural steel, the buildings, cranes or open areas may be damaged. It is not yet clear when they will resume production. Although we saw improved production in January and the Turkish steel market was just about to recover, it has now been hit by the earthquake.”

Yayan expects February steel production to fall sharply.

Botas has cut natural gas flow to the region, while roads and highways are heavily damaged. Meanwhile, the fire in Iskenderun port continues. The port is used by steelmakers mostly for containerised steel sales rather than scrap imports. At mills’ ports, where scrap imports are carried out, no damage has yet been reported.

The crude steel producers in the region are Isdemir, Toscelik, Ekinciler, MMK Metallurgy, Koç Metallurgy and Bastug Metallurgy. There are also numerous pipe producers as well as steel service centres.

A scrap supplier says: “No one talks about business in the middle of this tragedy. I am not expecting any activity this week.”

Another supplier says: “No remarkable damage is being reported by steelmakers. However, there is no one to work at the factories and no gas. I think the major issues are absent employees and transportation, besides continuing aftershocks.”

“The exact picture of the damage and the consequences of the earthquake will be determined once steel manufacturers reach their employees,” says a mill.

Some producers are heard focusing on gathering rescue teams to help people rather than on steel operations. Some plants are meanwhile opening their facilities to people for shelter.

In Turkey’s rebar market, buyers’ appetite is quite poor. Western and Marmara mills’ offers are standing at $720-725/tonne ex-works, while prices of $711-715/t are available from stockists.

Amid subdued activity, Kallanish kept its daily assessment for HMS 1&2 80:20 cfr Turkey unchanged at $425-428/t on Tuesday.

Beursblik: analisten verwachten opnieuw winsthalvering ArcelorMittal
