British Steel Rails Supporting Llangollen Railway’s Line

British Steel’s Scunthorpe Rail has supplied the Llangollen Railway with a second delivery of 56E1 flat-bottom rail, helping one of North Wales’ top heritage attractions prepare for an exciting year ahead. Last year’s delivery of rail allowed the line to extend its journey to Corwen by 2.5 miles, and the latest delivery is now being used to replace existing track in two areas midway along the line. Mr. Terry Pickthall, Llangollen Railway Press and Communications Officer, said that the recent delivery of British Steel 56E1 rail has allowed them to replace a sizeable section of worn rail between Berwyn and Glyndyfrdwy stations in time for the busy Easter operations in April.

The railway, which is the only standard gauge heritage line in North Wales, runs through the Dee Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The railway starts at Llangollen Station and runs for 7.5 miles following the River Dee upstream to Carrog. The installation of last year’s delivery of flat-bottom rail allowed the line to extend its journey to Corwen Station, and Terry said that the team is putting the finishing touches to the new station at Corwen, which will be a great asset to their operations.

The former British Rail Ruabon to Barmouth line closed to passenger traffic in 1964, and in 1975, the heritage railway was started by a group of enthusiasts who saw the potential for a scenic line through the Dee Valley. Relaying further track is planned for later this year, which will take around two years, and Scunthorpe Rail is looking into supplying its corrosion-resistant Zinoco® rail for the tunnel section. The Zinoco rails are coated in zinc, which forms a protective barrier against corrosion, and its super-hydrophobic finish also repels water, making it a perfect option for the Llangollen line's corrosive environment.

Brazil to Not Extend AD Duty on HR Coils from China

The Brazilian Foreign Trade Chamber, Camex, has denied a request from ArcelorMittal, CSN, and Gerdau to reapply anti-dumping measures on hot rolled coil imports from China, which are set to expire on May 21, 2023. The trade chamber believes that no relevant changes have been recorded in the analysis of previous public interest assessments during the years of suspension of such measures. The companies involved in the investigation were Chinese Hebei Iron & Steel, Bengang, Baosteel, and Maanshan Iron & Steel Company.

In 2018, Brazil imposed anti-dumping measures and countervailing duties on Chinese HRC for up to five years. However, these measures were never applied for reasons of public interest, which is a mandatory assessment in anti-dumping or subsidy investigations in Brazil since April 2019.

    The petitioners' request covered flat-rolled products of alloy or non-alloy steel, of a width equal to or greater than 600mm, hot-rolled, in sheets of thickness less than 4.75mm, or in coils of any thickness, classified under HS codes: 7208.10.00, 7208.25.00, 7208.26.10, 7208.26.90, 7208.27.10, 7208.27.90, 7208.36.10, 7208.36.90, 7208.37.00, 7208.38.10, 7208.38.90, 7208.39.10, 7208.39.90, 7208.40.00, 7208.53.00, 7208.54.00, 7208.90.00, 7225.30.00, and 7225.40.90.

EUROFER Seeks Industrial Policy for Green Investments in Europe

EUROFER, the European Steel Association, emphasizes the importance of a thriving European steel industry for the EU's strategic autonomy and resilience. Despite this, the EU has transitioned from being a net steel exporter to a major net steel importer, losing 30 million tonnes of sales on the EU and export markets over the past decade. Furthermore, the EU steel industry has lost 26 million tonnes of steel production capacity and 25% of its workforce.
To remain competitive during the greatest transformation of the industry towards climate-neutrality, the EU must adopt innovative and disruptive measures. Otherwise, competitors such as the US and China are likely to create a more attractive investment and production environment for green steel, further threatening the EU's strategic autonomy. It is essential to ensure that steel is at the core of the Green Deal Industry Plan and as an integral part of the Net-Zero Industry Act to transition steel and other energy-intensive industries towards carbon neutrality and enhance circularity while protecting EU industry competitiveness.
EUROFER calls for enabling conditions, including access to sufficient and globally cost-competitive fossil-free energy and primary and secondary raw materials such as steel scrap, better tailored, more certain, clear and flexible funding and financial incentives across the EU, establishment of lead markets for green steel and products, and a trade policy that levels the playing field with global competitors. Additionally, EUROFER prioritizes mainstreaming industrial policy and competitiveness while reducing regulatory burdens in all policy initiatives and legislative proposals, ensuring long-term predictability.
