British Steel to Supply Profiles for Bull Wheels in Alps

British Steel's Special Profiles business has received a new order for bull wheel profiles that will be used to manufacture bull wheels for ski-lift systems in the Alps. Bull wheels are large wheels that are typically between 3.6m and 7.3m in diameter and are used to feed and brake the steel rope that drives the ski-lifts. The bull wheel profiles are rolled in Skinningrove and are then supplied to a French fabricator, where they are bent into the required shape before being welded onto the final bull wheel structure.

The bull wheel profiles were developed by British Steel's Special Profiles business in 2017 to replace the previous method of welding together channel sections using heavy plate strips, which was time-consuming and expensive. The new bespoke profile has proved to be more efficient and cost-effective for customers, allowing for smaller rolling quantities and highly-specialised custom steel sections.

The use of bull wheels in ski-lift systems is vital for the safe operation of ski-lifts. The bull wheel acts as a feed and braking system for the steel rope that drives the ski-lift, ensuring that skiers are transported up and down the slopes safely and efficiently. The bespoke bull wheel profiles developed by British Steel's Special Profiles business are designed to provide the required strength and durability for this demanding application, helping skiers make the most of their time on the slopes.

A bull wheel is a large diameter wheel with a groove around its circumference that is used to support and guide a cable or rope, typically in ski-lift systems. The cable or rope is wound around the bull wheel, and its rotation allows the lift to move up or down the mountain. The bull wheel is an essential component of the lift, and its design is critical to ensuring the lift operates safely and efficiently.

Hoa Phat to restart Dung Quat blast furnace

Vietnam’s Hoa Phat Group, one of the leading steel manufacturers in the country, has announced that it will restart the banked No. 3 blast furnace at its Dung Quat plant in early April. The confirmation was made during Kallanish's tour of the plant on Wednesday. The furnace is one of four at the plant, each with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per year. Currently, two blast furnaces are in production, while two are banked, and the restart of the third furnace could potentially leave only one furnace banked. Hoa Phat had to idle two blast furnaces in late 2022 due to weak market demand. Vietnam's steel industry has been constrained by a tight credit environment, a crackdown on corruption, and high real estate prices.

Hoa Phat sources have also revealed that the three longs rolling lines at the plant are currently out of operation but are expected to resume operation soon after the completion of maintenance work. However, this information could not be confirmed by other sources at the plant.

The company's HRC mill, which thin-casts slabs with thicknesses of around 70-90mm and feeds them directly into the hot strip mill, is not operating at full capacity. This means that the sale of merchant slab does not make sense for the plant.

The Dung Quat plant has a crude steel capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per year, HRC capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per year, and 2.6 million tonnes per year of construction longs capacity.

While Hoa Phat's decision to restart the banked furnace is expected to increase steel output, it is unclear where the additional output will be sold, given that the HRC markets in the region are already well supplied, and new regional HRC mills, such as the one at Eastern Steel in Malaysia, are coming on-stream this year. Some of the increased HRC output will likely have to be exported, as the domestic markets are becoming saturated.

Despite these challenges, Hoa Phat remains one of the top steelmakers in Vietnam, with a wide range of products and services that include steel pipes, galvanized steel, color-coated steel, and more.
Other top steelmakers in Vietnam include Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corp, which operates one of the largest steel plants in Southeast Asia, and Hoa Sen Group, which specializes in the production of coated steel sheets and is known for its high-quality products and competitive pricing.

USDOC Postpones CVD Ruling on China's Tin Mill Products

The US Commerce Department has delayed the preliminary ruling of a countervailing duty investigation on tin mill products from China. The investigation, which began on February 7, 2023, was originally expected to have a preliminary ruling within 65 days, by April 13, 2023. However, the USDOC may extend the deadline to 130 days if the case is particularly complex and requires additional time for determination. As a result, the new deadline for the preliminary ruling on the CVD investigation is now set for June 20, 2023. This decision could potentially impact Chinese producers who export tin mill products to the US

In the case of the CVD investigation on tin mill products from China, the US Commerce Department would have been investigating whether Chinese producers of these products were receiving subsidies from the Chinese government, and if so, whether those subsidies were causing injury to the US tin mill products industry.

A countervailing duty is a trade remedy imposed by a country in response to another country's subsidization of its exports. A CVD investigation is conducted by the importing country's government to determine whether the goods imported from the exporting country are benefiting from subsidies, and if so, whether those subsidies are causing injury to the domestic industry of the importing country.

The United States has a significant demand for tinplate products, which are used for a variety of applications such as food and beverage containers, aerosol cans, and household appliances. Domestic players in the US tinplate industry include companies such as ArcelorMittal USA, US Steel, and California Steel Industries. In addition to these large players, there are also a number of smaller companies that specialize in producing tinplate and other steel products for niche markets. The demand for tinplate in the US is primarily met through imports, with China being one of the major sources of such imports.

NSK Increases Dynamic Load Rating of NSK Rolling Bearings

NSK Ltd. has announced that it has developed the world's first method for accurately predicting the life of a rolling bearing based on statistical data of non-metallic inclusions in the steel. This breakthrough technology has enabled NSK to revise up the basic dynamic load rating of its bearings and will allow customers to design machines and vehicles that can take full advantage of the long-life performance of high-quality NSK bearings.

The new method, which is based on advanced detection and analysis of non-metallic inclusions in the steel, uses NSK's unique Micro Ultrasonic Testing Method (Micro-UT Method) to inspect a volume of steel 3,000 times larger in one-fifth of the time compared to conventional methods. This allows efficient collection and analysis of highly reliable statistical data on non-metallic inclusions in bearing steel.
To derive a bearing life calculation method based on the analysis of non-metallic inclusions, NSK developed a unique rotational testing method that involves introducing artificial defects simulating non-metallic inclusions of various sizes into rolling bearing raceways. Through this process, NSK was able to reproduce specific modes of failure and created a simulation capable of reproducing and analyzing the stresses around the artificial defects to clarify the mechanism of flaking fatigue.

This breakthrough technology will enable highly accurate bearing life prediction, which can be used to revise up the basic dynamic load rating of bearings, a vital parameter used in application life calculation. For radial roller bearings, it is possible to revise up the basic dynamic load rating to double the equivalent rolling contact fatigue life.

The revised basic dynamic load ratings open up new possibilities for customers who want to capitalize on the long-life performance of NSK bearings in their machine design. This is expected to help customers reduce the frequency of component replacement and machine maintenance, and potentially downsize machine and unit designs, thereby contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

NSK will initially propose solutions based on this technology to select customers, followed by a broad revision of the basic dynamic load rating of its standard bearing lineup. NSK bearings are made of high-quality steel, which has been constantly improved by NSK researchers and engineers closely collaborating with steel manufacturers. As a result, the actual life of NSK bearings tends to be considerably longer than bearing life calculated in accordance with ISO standards.

This new technology is a significant milestone for NSK, as it will enable the company to provide customers with a higher level of precision and reliability when it comes to predicting the life of its bearings. NSK's commitment to innovation and technological advancement has once again been demonstrated with this breakthrough, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the future of machine and vehicle design.

Sophia University Researchers Reveal Nature of Fractures by Hydrogen

Hydrogen embrittlement weakens the material, making it more likely to fail under mechanical stress, and is a major challenge for the hydrogen automobile industry. High-strength steels have a higher weight-to-strength ratio, making them ideal materials for lightweight vehicles, but their exposure to hydrogen negatively affects their mechanical properties.

Scientists have discovered a way to study intergranular fractures caused by hydrogen embrittlement in high-strength steel. A research team from Sophia University, Japan, led by Professor Kenichi Takai, has developed a new mechanical test that allows for the study of intergranular (IG) fractures in high-strength (HS) steel caused by hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement occurs when hydrogen atoms diffuse into the material's lattice structure, weakening it and making it more susceptible to failure under mechanical stress. IG fractures, which occur along the grain boundaries of the crystalline lattice, are particularly difficult to study in isolation due to other types of fracture that tend to occur alongside them.

The team's innovative mechanical test involves repeated loading and unloading of the HS steel sample during hydrogen charging. This test progressively reduces the material's ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and produces almost-pure IG fractures. The researchers believe that this occurs because hydrogen atoms are given enough time to fill up new cracks generated in the material, allowing the fracture to advance exclusively along the grain boundaries.

To gain insight into the lattice defects present below the fracture, the team used lower-temperature thermal desorption spectroscopy (L-TDS). This technique involves observing the rate of desorption of a gas (hydrogen) from the material at different temperatures, providing information about the number and types of defects present in it. The researchers were able to distinguish hydrogen trapping sites on the atomic scale, providing important clues to understand and potentially suppress hydrogen embrittlement in HS steel.

Further analyses of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that local plastic deformation occurs right below the IG fracture caused by hydrogen embrittlement. The findings of this study will help materials scientists understand hydrogen embrittlement in HS steel better, paving the way for new methods to suppress it and enabling the safe use of HS steel in hydrogen-powered vehicles.

To investigate this issue, researchers, including Professor Kenichi Takai from Sophia University in Japan, devised a load reduction test to produce pure intergranular fractures in embrittled high-strength steel samples. They also used thermal desorption spectroscopy to study lattice defects below the fracture surface.

The study's findings could aid in the development of methods to suppress hydrogen embrittlement and enable the safe use of high-strength steel in hydrogen-powered vehicles. The research was supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, and The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.

Sophia University, established in 1913 in Tokyo, is a prestigious Jesuit-affiliated university that offers education in various fields, including engineering and applied sciences.

Kenichi Takai is an accomplished researcher with a strong background in materials science and engineering. Prior to joining Sophia University, he conducted research at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation for almost a decade. At Sophia University, he is a full Professor in the Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the Faculty of Science and Technology. His research focuses on hydrogen embrittlement in metals, with a particular interest in understanding the hydrogen trapping sites in metals and developing high-strength steels with high resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.
