    Outokumpu wil winst verder opvoeren

Outokumpu has already achieved its financial targets, EUR 250 million EBITDA run-rate improvements and net debt to EBITDA ratio to below 3.0. Strong performance and diligent strategy execution in the first phase provide a solid foundation for the second phase until 2025.

It has now set key strategic priorities, business area targets and related changes in the leadership team in the second phase of strategy. The second phase will focus on three key priorities: sustainability, growth from productivity and customer-focused steering. As part of the company’s ambitious sustainability journey, Outokumpu aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 14% by the end of 2025 compared to the 2021 level, in line with its SBTi 1.5 degree climate target. Also, capital discipline and strong shareholder returns will be at the core of the company’s long-term strategy going forwards.

Outokumpu Orders Mold Expert Fiber Systems from Primetals

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    29 Jun, 2022, 5:57 am

Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu has recently placed an order with Primetals Technologies for two new molds and two new Mold Expert Fiber systems. The equipment will be supplied to Outokumpu’s two single-strand slab casters at its site in Tornio, located in the north-western part of Finland. Startup is scheduled for April 2023. As a global market leader in stainless steel, Outokumpu wants to use Primetals Technologies’ expertise and technology to take its proficiency in casting stainless steel to a new level.

The variety of stainless steel grades in Outokumpu’s product portfolio is constantly increasing as more complex and specialized steels are introduced and produced. At the same time, quality levels for standard products are also increasing as the products are used in more demanding applications. To be able to successfully expand our product portfolio, to further improve product quality, and to ensure safe production, Outokumpu has decided to invest in cutting-edge technology for mold temperature measurement. The new technology provides a new type of visualization of the mold. This is of great importance because the mold is where the slab’s surface quality is determined. Also, Mold Expert Fiber gives the possibility to control the casting process and the solidification of the steel to a greater extent.

Mold Expert Fiber’s core aim is to alarm operators to the possibility of a caster-mold breakout at the earliest possible stage. The system will also deliver information that up until now was unattainable, for example data on the exact mold level across the whole width of the mold and the liquid steel’s movements inside the mold. Therefore, the Mold Expert Fiber system will be a main tool for Outokumpu for developing new steel grades.

The two systems that will be supplied to the Tornio plant feature 1,786 measuring points per mold, which is more than 30 times more sensors compared with conventional thermocouple measuring. The secret behind this abundance of measuring points is fiber technology – Fiber Bragg Gratings which reflect light are burned into the fiber, and when the temperature changes, they reflect the light differently. These changes can be measured with great accuracy and visualized. As a result, the measuring points are producing a real time thermal image of what is going on inside the mold.

The scope of supply includes detail engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, commissioning, and a one-year service deal. This means that for the first 12 months after purchase, Primetals Technologies will support Outokumpu in handling and analyzing the rich amount of slab casting data.

Outokumpu Divests Majority of Long Product Business to Marcegaglia

    Strategic Research Institute

    13 Jul, 2022, 5:23 am

Finland headquartered stainless steel giant Outokumpu has signed an agreement to divest the majority of the Long Products business operations to Marcegaglia Steel Group to focus on its core business of flat stainless steel products.Outokumpu President & CEO Mr Heikki Malinen said “This divestment marks the accomplishment of the turnaround program for the Long Products business in the past two years. With Marcegaglia, we have found a responsible and committed owner to develop Long Products business even further. The sale is a natural step for Outokumpu in line with our strategy to focus on our core business, stainless steel flat products.”

The sales of Long Products accounted for approximately 8% of the Outokumpu Group's sales in 2021. The transaction includes Long Products melting, rod and bar operations in Sheffield in UK, bar operations in Richburg in US and wire rod mill in Fagersta in Sweden. The transaction does not include Outokumpu Long Products AB operations in Degerfors and Storfors in Sweden. Approximately 650 employees in Sheffield, Richburg and Fagersta will transfer to the buyer as a part of the transaction. Outokumpu Long Products AB’s units in Degerfors and Storfors in Sweden continue their operations for now as part of the Outokumpu Group, and different options are to be evaluated for the future of the units.

The total consideration on a debt and cash free basis amounts to EUR 228 million implying an EV Adjusted 2021 EBITDA multiple of 4.9x. In the January–September 2022 interim report, Outokumpu will classify its Long Products businesses to be divested as assets held for sale, report the businesses as a discontinued operation and based on preliminary assessment, impairment of some EUR 50 million would be recognized, subject still to final review.

Outokumpu expects to complete the divestment by the end of this year. The completion of the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals by the competition authorities and requires for instance internal structuring before completion. The transaction will be carried out as a share sale.

Outokumpu Reports EUR 923 Million EBITDA in H1 of 2022

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    5 Aug, 2022, 6:52 am

Finland based leading global stainless steel producer Outokumpu’s sales increased to EUR 2.951 billion in the April-June 2022 quarter as compared to EUR 2.760 billion in April-June 2021 quarter and adjusted EBITDA amounted to EUR 547 million as compared to EUR 377 million in prior year quarter. Outokumpu’s President & CEO Mr Heikki Malinen said “Our strong performance continued in the second quarter. The past months have been eventful for Outokumpu. To mention a few of the key events of the second quarter, we launched the second phase of our strategy, introduced emission-minimized stainless steel product line Circle Green and announced our aim to achieve carbon neutrality at our Kemi chrome mine by 2025. In July, we announced that we will divest the majority of Long Products business area. This divestment represents a successful closing of the turnaround program, which was started two years ago.”

Total stainless steel deliveries in Q2 declined by 7% while realized prices for stainless steel continued to further strengthen in Europe and also in Americas. Profitability was negatively impacted by increased maintenance costs and higher variable costs, mainly due to significant cost inflation in freight and consumable prices. Raw material-related inventory and metal derivative gains were significantly higher compared to the previous quarter, mainly due to positive timing impacts, and amounted to EUR 86 million

During the first-half of 2022, Outokumpu’s sales increased to EUR 5.712 billion and adjusted EBITDA amounted to EUR 923 million. Total stainless steel deliveries in the first-half of 2022 were 1% higher compared to the same period last year. In 2022, profitability was driven by remarkably increased realized prices for stainless steel in both Europe and Americas and a higher ferrochrome sales price. However, fixed and variable costs increased compared to the previous year. Especially significant cost inflation in energy, freight and consumable prices burdened profitability. Raw material-related inventory and metal derivative gains amounted to EUR 43 million in the first-half of 2022

Outlook for Q3 2022 “Group stainless steel deliveries for continuing operations* in the third quarter are expected to decrease by 10–20% compared to the second quarter. Prices for stainless steel in the already received orders have remained at a high level. The European ferrochrome benchmark price decreased to USD 1.80/lb for the third quarter. Energy costs are expected to increase in the third quarter and impact especially negatively business area Ferrochrome. Planned maintenance costs in the third quarter are expected to increase by approximately EUR 10 million compared to the second quarter. With current raw material prices, significant raw material-related inventory and metal derivative losses are expected to be realized in the third quarter. Adjusted EBITDA for continuing operations in the third quarter of 2022 is expected to be lower compared to the second quarter. Continuing operations is excluding the Long Products business units to be divested, which will be classified as assets held for sale, reported and restated as discontinued operations in Q3 of2022. Continuing operations represents approximately 90% of Group second-quarter adjusted EBITDA.”

Outokumpu’s history began in 1910 with the discovery of copper in Kuusjärvi, Finland on a hill called Outokumpu, which literally means strange hill. Over the years, Outokumpu mined and refined various metals in Finland and abroad, before focusing solely on stainless steel in the 2000s.

Outokumpu to Delay Ferrochrome Furnace Restart over Energy Prices

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    7 Sep, 2022, 6:54 am

Finland headquartered global stainless steel leader Outokumpu will delay the restart of one of its ferrochrome furnaces after a maintenance break due to the elevated electricity price. Outokumpu said “Due to exceptionally high energy prices and an unstable energy market, stainless steel producer Outokumpu has decided to delay the restart of one of its three ferrochrome furnaces after a planned maintenance break. The maintenance break starts on 7 September and restart was initially planned for week 40. Ferrochrome production will continue at about 70% of its full capacity.”

Outokumpu’s President Ferrochrome Mr Martti Sassi said “Energy prices have increased significantly, which has had a negative impact on our cost competitiveness compared to our non-European competitors. We hope that decisive actions are taken at both EU and national level to stabilize the energy market. We are keeping a close eye on the situation and hope that politicians will take an active role in normalizing the operating environment. We have already been optimizing our ferrochrome production by not producing ferrochrome at the highest hourly prices to avoid the worst peaks in prices, as communicated earlier*. The decision to delay the reopening of one of our furnaces is a continuation of the ferrochrome production optimization.”

Despite the decrease in Outokumpu’s ferrochrome production, the company’s stainless steel production will remain on the same level as guided in January–June interim report, and these measures will not impact customer deliveries or financial outlook for the third quarter.

Outokumpu to Invest in Biocoke & Biomethane Plant in Finland

    3 Oct, 2022, 6:18 am

Helsinki Finland headquartered stainless steel giant Outokumpu plans a significant investment in a biocoke and biomethane plant, aiming at reduce climate emissions and increasing self-sufficiency in energy in Finland. As a part of its ambitious climate actions, Outokumpu is planning an investment in a biocoke and biomethane plant at its stainless-steel production site in Tornio in Finland. This large-scale biocoke project has now proceeded to a phase where Outokumpu is applying for investment support totalling EUR 25 million. If realized, this project would significantly increase self-sufficiency in energy in Finland and it also has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes per year. This project supports significantly the Finnish and European energy and climate targets for 2030.

The new biocoke and biomethane plant would show that it is possible to produce a new raw material from the forest industry waste that is currently burned for low-efficient energy creation purposes. The new raw material, which is called biocoke, could replace the coke that it currently imports and that is used as reductant in Outokumpu’s ferrochrome production process.

Outokumpu’s biocoke project is a result of the research done in the Towards Carbon Neutral Metals or TOCANEM program, financed by Business Finland. The biocoke project would, if realized, be one of the first new significant industrial investments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as a result of the TOCANEM program. In the TOCANEM research program, the metal industry and research organizations have together researched possibilities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the production of steel and other metals.

Outokumpu to Continue to Restrict Ferrochrome Production

Stainless steel leader Outokumpu plans to continue to restrict its ferrochrome production and starts related change negotiations. Outokumpu said “The price of electricity remains exceptionally high and the situation on the energy market has not eased since Outokumpu announced on September 6 its decision to delay the restart of one of its three ferrochrome furnaces after a maintenance break. In this exceptional situation, the company plans therefore to further delay the restart of this furnace at least until the end of the first quarter of 2023 and will start change negotiations related to the restriction of the ferrochrome production. These negotiations concern all of the employees working in the ferrochrome operations, and the planned measures would concern at most 70 people.”

Outokumpu President Business Area Ferrochrome Mr Martti Sassi said “Unfortunately, the situation in the energy market has not eased, but the high price of electricity continues to have a negative impact on our cost competitiveness compared to our competitors, mainly from outside Europe. The possible further delay of the restarting of the furnace is a difficult but potentially necessary measure in an utterly exceptional situation. In the change negotiations, we will try to find a solution for us to be able to employ our ferrochrome personnel in the other Tornio operations.”

Outokumpu started to optimize its ferrochrome production in August 2022 by not producing ferrochrome at the highest electricity prices. The capacity of the furnace that has been shut down is approximately 30% of the entire ferrochrome capacity. Continuing to restrict the ferrochrome production will not impact Outokumpu’s stainless-steel deliveries.

Finland headquartered stainless steel leader Outokumpu has reported strong EBITDA of EUR 304 million in July-September quarter of 2022 as compared to EUR 228 million in prior year with sales of 491,000 tonnes, down as compared of 546,000 tonnes in prior year. Outokumpu’s stainless steel deliveries were 1.656 million tonnes in January-September of 2022 down From 1.704 million tonnes in January-September of 2021 and EBITDA of EUR 1.146 billion as compared to EUR 668 million in prior year

Outokumpu President & CEO Mr Heikki Malinen said “Our third-quarter performance was solid. We delivered EUR 304 million of adjusted EBITDA, which is the best third-quarter result in Outokumpu’s history. Our stainless steel deliveries fell by 12% in a softening market with exceptionally high imports. Distributors accelerated de-stocking of commodity grades, while end-user demand remained stable.”

He said “Due to high electricity prices, we have been optimizing our ferrochrome production, which has led to lower production volumes, and adjusted EBITDA for business area Ferrochrome declined to EUR 34 million. We also decided to delay the restart of one of our three ferrochrome furnaces to at least the end of the first quarter of 2023.”

    Outlook for Q4 2022

Group stainless steel deliveries in the fourth quarter are expected to decrease by 0–10% compared to the third quarter.

The European ferrochrome benchmark price decreased to USD 1.49/lb for the fourth quarter.

Ferrochrome production continues at 50–60% of its full capacity due to a furnace shutdown and the optimization of the ferrochrome production, caused by exceptionally high electricity costs.

With current raw material prices, raw material-related inventory and metal derivative losses are expected to be realized in the fourth quarter.

Adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter of 2022 is expected to be lower compared

Outokumpu Aims to Improve Energy Efficiency Significantly in 2023

Finland headquartered stainless steel leader Outokumpu announced that it aims to improve its energy efficiency significantly in 2023 and 2024 amidst the European energy crisis and decided to significantly increase its energy efficiency improvement target and prioritize related investments in 2023 and 2024. It said “So far, Outokumpu’s target has been to improve energy efficiency by 0.5% annually. Until the end of 2024, Outokumpu now aims to improve its energy efficiency by 8% across the group compared to the January–September 2022 level. These measures would correspond to energy saving of approximately 600,000 MWh which is equal to annual electricity usage of 15,000 households.

Outokumpu’s Chief Technology Officer Mr Stefan Erdmann said “The European energy crisis has created a turbulent operating environment. To tackle the uncertainty, we have decided to take immediate action on our own energy efficiency. This means that we will prioritize investments to improve our energy efficiency and also increase related annual capital expenditure by EUR 20 million in 2023 and 2024. The new efficiency measures will support Outokumpu to achieve our ambitious climate targets.”

These additional investments do not impact Outokumpu’s capital expenditure frame of EUR 600 million for the second phase of the strategy by the end of 2025. For 2023 and 2024, the annual capital expenditure remains EUR 200 million.
