Toyota boss says electric cars are overhyped, sounds industry warning

Toyota president Akio Toyoda has suggested electric vehicles (EVs) are overhyped, warning the banning of combustion-engined cars would see the “collapse” of the industry.

The 64-year-old made the comments at a news conference in his capacity as chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, according to the Wall Street Journal.

He furthermore suggested a large-scale switch to electric cars would not have a positive impact on emissions levels.

“The more EVs we build, the worse carbon dioxide gets,” Toyoda said, making reference to emissions created by some types of electricity generation.

“When politicians are out there saying, ‘Let’s get rid of all cars using gasoline,’ do they understand this?” he asked.

Toyoda went on to point out Japan – which is considering banning the sale of new pure combustion vehicles from the mid-2030s – would run out of electricity should the country’s entire fleet suddenly be electrically powered.

“The current business model of the car industry is going to collapse”, with millions of jobs lost, should such a ban be implemented, he added.

Interestingly, the comments come after Toyota earlier in December 2020 previewed an upcoming mid-sized battery-electric SUV based on the firm’s forthcoming e-TNGA platform.
