US construction outlook mixed on hurricane rebuild

The long-term outlook for the US construction market is mixed, as any rebuilding after Hurricanes Irma and Harvey is unlikely to have a significant, extended impact on the market, according to an economist.

There are rarely long-term net increases in construction spending after a disaster, with few examples of higher and sustained post-disaster spending, the Associated General Contractors of America’s chief economist Kenneth Simonson said in a September 18 presentation.

Most rebuilding and other construction market impacts are short-term and local, he told attendees at the Metal Service Center Institute’s annual economic summit in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Still, there is typically a surge of demand for protective items and construction accessories, like plywood and wallboard, before and after a major weather event, he noted. Immediate demand for construction labour also spikes, he added.

More broadly, in US construction, private non-residential spending has hit peaks recently but is now starting to level off, according to Simonson, a top US construction economist whose organisation represents thousands of contractors and construction companies.

Total US construction spending finally crested past its 2006 peak this past spring, hitting a new record in dollar terms, he continued.

But this data, from the US Census Bureau, does not specify square footage, nor is it inflation-adjusted, he said. That renders it problematic for determining true peaks and recoveries.

Another key measure – total US construction employment – is still down 11% over that 2006 peak, Simonson said, so overall data is mixed.

For the twelve months ended July 2017, US public construction spending dropped 6% and private non-residential spending fell 4% year-on-year, he noted.

Simonson forecast that total US non-residential construction spending in 2017, both private and public, will grow by 1-3% over 2016 levels, with a further “very rough” forecast of 1-5% growth in 2018.

Lately, commercial construction – a formal category that covers only retail, warehouse and farm buildings – has grown in 2017, with similar positive trends in office buildings, his presentation showed, citing Census put-in-place construction data.

Big warehouses of 1 million square feet or larger are increasing, often located at state intersections, for e-commerce or other commercial uses, while buildings for click-and-collect services could also proliferate, he said. Data centres are built out more and more often, one metals-intensive niche, although there is little useful data on that segment.

“Those in the metals business have also benefited from the steep rise in Canadian lumber prices,” Simonson commented, addressing an audience of metals professionals, who often compete with wood as a building material,

Ik heb vanmorgen e.e.a. nog eens even gecontroleerd.

Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp have signed a memorandum of understanding over the merger of their European steel businesses, Tata said in a statement early Wednesday morning.

The 50:50 joint venture would have shipments of around 21 million mt/year and be called thyssenkrupp Tata Steel. It would focus on "the supply of premium and differentiated products to customers" and have a pro forma turnover of around €15 billion. The business would be headquartered in the Amsterdam region of the Netherlands, where Tata has its IJmuiden facility.

"thyssenkrupp and Tata Steel are creating a sustainable future for their respective European steel activities by jointly forming the planned joint venture. The business combination creates a strong number 2 and is thus much better positioned to cope with the structural changes in the European steel industry," Dr Heinrich Hiesinger, chairman of them thyssenkrupp executive board said.

The JV could yield annual synergies of around €400 million-€600 million, Koushik Chatterjee, group executive director at Tata Steel, said.

"Both shareholders have taken care to ensure that the balance sheet of the combined venture will be structured to ensure a sustainable business going forward. The proposed transaction in Europe also paves the way for significant de-leveraging of the Tata Steel Group’s consolidated balance sheet and provides the platform for Tata Steel to pursue future growth," he added.

thyssenkrupp Tata Steel would seek to improve capacity utilization across the major hubs of IJmuiden, Duisburg and Port Talbot, and their downstream facilities. Early synergies would come from integration of sales and administration, research and development and joint optimization of procurement, logistics and service centres.

"The process will now move to the next phase in the transaction with due diligence and negotiations on the definitive detailed agreements," the statement said.

    Hoi Rene,

Je ziet dat Sail niet echt 'the place to be' is.

    Har.

    New Delhi, June 16-2016:
New age steel plants have left public sector steel maker SAIL far behind in terms of employee efficiency.
In 2014-15, SAIL spent seven times more on employees for producing each tonne of steel as compared to JSW Steel.
The Sajjan Jindal-owned company also out performed Tata Steel in this regard.
According to the annual results of the companies, Tata Steel’s standalone business (India) spent ?50.73 crore on employees for producing each tonne of steel against ?12.39 crore spent by JSW Steel.
SAIL lagged far behind at ?70.07 crore, despite several modernisation and expansion projects undertaken to improve efficiency. But, the lower spend on employees is by no means an indication of lower production.
JSW Steel’s production at 12.63 million tonnes was only marginally lower than SAIL’s 13.91 million tonnes in 2014-15.
Tata Steel’s production from India stood at 9.07 million tonnes. SAIL’s problem stems from its massive employee count. While the 2014-15 numbers are not yet out, it ended March 31, 2014, with 97,897 employees.
In comparison, JSW had 11,099 people on its rolls. On the same date, Tata Steel had 36,199 employees working in India.
In fact, on an average SAIL spends less on each employee than any other steelmaker in the country. In the 2013-14 fiscal, its average spend per employee was ?9.80 lakh compared to Tata Steel India’s ?10.14 lakh and JSW Steel’s ?11.69 lakh.
