    Published on :
    06 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

German energy giant RWE will acquire the gas-fired power plant Magnum at Eemshaven in the province of Groningen the Netherlands from Vattenfall. The two companies have signed an agreement to this effect. The plant, which has been in operation since 2013, is one of the most modern power plants of its kind and has an installed capacity of 1.4 gigawatts. Magnum is located in the immediate vicinity of RWE’s existing power plant in Eemshaven, a hard coal-and biomass-fired power plant of 1,560 megawatts capacity. Thereby RWE expects comprehensive benefits from sharing local infrastructure.

Thanks to its construction design, Magnum is already hydrogen-ready & the plant can be made technically suitable to co-fire hydrogen by up to 30%. Moreover, there may also be the possibility of converting Magnum to rely on hydrogen as its sole fuel by the end of the decade. Magnum not only supports the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy sector, but also the local expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure in the province of Groningen, in which RWE is already actively involved through the ‘Eemshydrogen’ project cluster.

Since 2020, RWE has been developing Eemshydrogen, an innovative project for the environmentally friendly production of hydrogen in Eemshaven. As part of the tender for the Hollandse Kust West VII offshore wind farm, RWE also plans to build electrolysers with a total capacity of 600 megawatts. This would sustainably develop the province of Groningen into one of the focal points of the Dutch hydrogen economy.

BAC & Viritech Developing e-Mono Hydrogen Powertrain

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    06 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

Hydrogen powertrain technologies for the automotive, aerospace, marine and distributed power industries developer Viritech has secured a Niche Vehicle Network Feasibility Study grant, funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, to carry out a study into developing a hydrogen powertrain for niche vehicle applications. Working in collaboration with Liverpool-based BAC, manufacturers of the renowned Mono supercar, the resulting e-Mono concept continues to be led by BAC’s principles of uncompromising performance and driver experience.

One of the main challenges of converting a 555kg Mono supercar to zero-emissions is how to retain its ultra-lightweight, especially as converting to battery-electric would make the car 50% heavier. In addition, while BEV cars can go just as fast as a petrol-engined alternative, the joy of a track-focused supercar is its agility and responsiveness through corners. Viritech and BAC set out to create a design for a ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) e-Mono that stayed true to BAC’s founding principle of making the world’s best driving car.

Viritech’s philosophy is to develop fuel cell drivetrains that are lighter, smaller, and more efficient than anything on the market, and BAC wanted to develop a ZEV powertrain that could be fitted within the existing chassis and body, while keeping weight to an absolute minimum. The e-Mono also had to achieve the same Silverstone lap time as the Mono R, if not better it. It was accepted that the combination of a fuel cell, a hydrogen storage tank and a battery pack would be heavier than a petrol engine, but if kept to a manageable weight, it would not compromise the Mono’s legendary agility.

One of the main challenges was to fit a fuel cell powertrain into an existing Mono chassis, the next was to retain perfect weight distribution, and finally the completed car had to be housed within the confines of existing Mono bodywork. The solution was to fit the battery pack element as far under the seat as possible, and by making the battery pack casing a structural component, it was possible to reduce the chassis footprint which increased available space. The fuel cell was then put above the battery pack, with its compressor hidden inside the air intake pod normally used for the petrol-powered Mono R.

The result is a battery pack which produces 265 bhp, with a fuel cell producing 107 bhp, and tiny 3kg motors on the front wheels which provide an additional 55 bhp per motor and all-wheel drive. The design was put through a series of Digital Twin simulation tests, in which the e-Mono shaved two seconds off the Mono R Silverstone lap time (2.04.3 vs 2.06.3). The combination of fuel cell and battery resulted in the capability to run 10 fast laps of Silverstone between refuelling. On-road range is calculated at 166 miles on the official WLTP cycle, approximately 140 miles in realistic use.

    06 Jun, 2022, 6:30 am

Chinese Jingye Group’s British Steel is conducting a major study into the use of green hydrogen in the company’s drive to decarbonise its operations and manufacture net-zero steel. The steelmaker, which is collaborating with EDF UK, University College London and the Materials Processing Institute, has pledged to deliver net-zero steel by 2050 and significantly reduce its CO2 intensity by 2030 and 2035. To support its ambitious plans, it has secured funding from the UK Government for a feasibility study into switching from natural gas to green hydrogen as a fuel source for re-heating furnaces.

If the study is successful, British Steel will undertake an industrial-scale demonstration, which could see the technology developed and rolled out across all its operations including its main manufacturing base in Scunthorpe. It could also be adopted by other UK steelmakers.

British Steel won funding for the research from the UK Government’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio. The NZIP funding from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy provides funding for low-carbon technologies and systems. Decreasing the costs of decarbonisation, the Portfolio will help enable the UK to end its contribution to climate change. With its partners, British Steel is now undertaking a 6-month study based on operations at its Teesside Beam Mill.

The study links into the Tees Green Hydrogen project – a pioneering scheme that will use green electricity from the nearby Teesside Offshore Wind Farm along with a new solar farm, which EDF Renewables UK intends to construct near Redcar, to power its hydrogen electrolyser. Tees Green Hydrogen will supply local business customers with hydrogen to support decarbonisation efforts and a significant reduction in industrial pollution.

British Steel’s ambition is for low-embedded carbon steel production with a phased reduction of CO2 intensity by 2035 and 2050. Its Low-Carbon Roadmap will deliver net-zero steel by 2050 and significantly reduce CO2 intensity by 2030 and 2035. British Steel will adopt a science-based target in order to validate the reductions achieved to keep global warming well below 2 degree Celsius and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.52 degree Celsius.

NPROXX has delivered the first units of an innovative new hydrogen storage system designed for passenger trains to train manufacturer Siemens Mobility GmbH in Germany. The tank systems and related technologies are used by Siemens Mobility in the prototypes of a new hydrogen-powered passenger train, as a part of its no-fossil-fuels Mireo train platform. Initially, the trains will be trialled extensively at Siemens Mobility’s test facility at Wildenrath in Germany. These tests are likely to last throughout 2022, with the aim of the project to have hydrogen-powered passenger trains in service with the operator, Deutsche Bahn AG, in early 2023, on specific routes in south-west Germany.

The train carriages are a completely new design, rather than a retrofit, which NPROXX has worked collaboratively with Siemens Mobility on through every step. Storage system is designed so that there is plenty of room for Siemens Mobility to optimise the passenger environment and provide a comfortable and spacious travel experience. Generally, commuter trains in continental Europe have drivetrains integrated into every carriage, and this is also the case in our design. The lightweight hydrogen storage system is sited on the roof of the carriage. Even when fully loaded with hydrogen gas and passengers, the loads are well within acceptable limits.

The Siemens Mobility Mireo platform is a new rail system that operates completely without combustion engines. Mireo already includes battery electric vehicles, and now Siemens Mobility is working with NPROXX to develop a hydrogen-fuel-cell electric version as well. Depending on the profile of schedules, distances and various elevations on train routes, train operators of the future will be able to choose Mireo vehicles to suit their needs, either battery- or hydrogen-driven.

German public transport operator RVK, after receiving 15 buses in 2021, has placed an order with Solaris Bus & Coach for 20 Urbino 12 hydrogen buses. After the deliveries have been completed, the city of Cologne will boast a fleet of 35 hydrogen Solaris buses in total. The contract also provides for the option to order another 20 vehicles of the same type. Thus, Cologne will boast the biggest fleet of hydrogen Solaris buses in Europe.

As for their design, equipment and performance, the vehicles will be much the same as the buses ordered by RVK last time. Buses of this kind need hydrogen to propel them. It is stored in gaseous form in tanks, mounted on the front part of the vehicle’s roof. The hydrogen buses will use a set of 70 kW fuel cells. In a hydrogen fuel cell, electricity is generated via a process of reverse electrolysis and then transferred directly to the driveline. At moments of increased demand for electricity, the fuel cell will be boosted by a Solaris High Power battery.

As with the vehicles already delivered, the newly commissioned hydrogen buses will boast the highest equipment standards available. Passengers travelling by buses operated by RVK will benefit, for example, from high-efficiency air-conditioning and an advanced passenger information system. Drivers will certainly appreciate the qualities of the MobilEyeShield+ system, detecting pedestrians and cyclists in the blind spot of the vehicle. It includes one forward-facing camera and two cameras placed on the sides of the vehicles as well as audio and visual alerts. What is more, carrier RVK has ordered a remote fleet management system called eSConnect, providing access to real-time vehicle data.
