Jongstleden woensdag 3 Februari PB Sopheon.

    www.sopheon.com/DesktopModules/Announ...

Sopheon Among Winners of Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) Contract

Sopheon Teams with Concurrent Technologies Corporation and Twenty-Eight Others to Support Military Program for Development of Manned and Unmanned Vehicles

Sopheon, the international provider of software and services for product lifecycle management, announced today that it is part of a team of organizations working with Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) on a contract that CTC was awarded under the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) Omnibus Program. The program is intended to provide TARDEC with resources to augment its in-house capabilities in the development of manned and unmanned military ground vehicles.

The contract team of which Sopheon is a member under the TARDEC Omnibus Program encompasses 30 supplier and resource organizations led by Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC). The consortium includes large and small corporations, small disadvantaged businesses, not-for-profits and universities. The contract provides CTC with the opportunity to propose competitively on Cost Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) and Firm Fixed Price (FFP) orders relating to TARDEC’s overall mission as the U.S. government’s primary research and development activity for military vehicle systems. The amount of business coming to Sopheon will depend on which CTC proposals are accepted by TARDEC. The contract is a five-year, multi-award, Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement with a potential overall value to the consortium of up to $430 million.

TARDEC is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM). It is the Department of Defense’s full lifecycle engineering support provider for all manned and unmanned ground vehicle systems. TARDEC's mission includes working with Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) and Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) stakeholders to maintain a sound, advanced science and technology base in order to address the warfighters' needs with innovative capabilities.

The TARDEC contract is the latest development in Sopheon’s successful efforts to establish a strong business beachhead in aerospace and defense (A&D) markets. The company launched its strategy for entering the sector less than three years ago. Since that time its base of A&D customers has grown steadily, and now includes such organizations as BAE Systems, EG&G, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, QinetiQ, Textron and the U.S. Navy and QinetiQ,Air Force. The U.S. Army’s Ground Vehicle/Power and Mobility (GVPM) Program Office within TARDEC is also a user of Sopheon’s software.

“Our strategic focus on A&D markets is still relatively young,” said David Vangeison, Sopheon’s director for federal, aerospace and defense markets. “But our early experience has validated that this will be an area of great opportunity for us in the years ahead. Sopheon’s participation in TARDEC’s Omnibus Program underscores our commitment to realizing this potential. Along with our teammates, we look forward to working closely with TARDEC to provide the resources they need to augment their existing capabilities.”

Sopheon returns to break-even on lower sales

The tough times continue at little "product innovation support" software firm, Sopheon. A trading statement this morning confirms that the trends we saw at its interims (Sopheon – wrong place, wrong time) continued through the rest of the year, with full year revenues expected to be £8m – down 11%, which is worse than the half-year (down 5%). There is better news on costs – the company expanded on the back of good 2008 results and had to reverse direction rather sharpish when it realised the effects of the downturn on its customers (if it had listened to our forecasts it might have been less bullish!) Sopheon expects to roughly break even in operating terms for the year, improving on the half-year position. Better news still, it says its order book has picked up significantly, with almost as many orders in the last quarter as the previous three.

It appears that Sopheon’s customers – mainly blue-chip manufacturing companies – are beginning to feel a little more confident, as the pipeline turns into orders. Recurring revenues are around 70% of total and it starts the year with a good base, around 50% of this year’s revenue is ‘visible.’ But it repeats that these are tough times, with long sales cycles and pricing pressure.

The Back End of the Front End of Innovation

Once a company’s creative juices are flowing, guided by ideation processes and supported by systems, a steady stream of ideas passes through the front end of innovation towards the point at which the $64,000 question can be posed: to implement or not to implement?

By this time, an idea will have been nurtured, developed, tended and nursed. It will have survived the rigours of peer comments and early review, and it will have grown from a seedling to something that looks like it could, perhaps, survive the natural selection of the product development world.

With this intellectual investment in mind and balanced against a company's capacity to develop new products, "to implement or not to implement?" is clearly a decision that can't be taken too lightly. Tests and schemes are available to help determine whether an idea should be developed further or not. Ideas passing the test are taken forward as concepts, subjected to more scrutiny in Stage-Gate® processes, and, if their initial promise holds up, are taken on into product development initiatives to fill the shelves, warehouses, showrooms and web sites of our world.

In contrast, those ideas that didn't quite make it remain in a state of limbo, waiting for a future review that might transplant them into further development, and wilting as time passes.

My guess would be that this shadow world of ideas-in-limbo is a large, untapped resource that could be put to use, given the right licensing and protection models. Rather like the trading of unused furniture via ebay.com, the trading of un-implemented ideas via an ibay.com might reveal some interesting opportunities which would otherwise never see the light of day . There are existing approaches in the non-profit world.

The key to wider applicability would involve an appropriate handling of competition—how to prevent your company's creative efforts from being adopted by your direct competitor to take away your market share?—and the appropriate handling of licensing—how should an idea implementer compensate an idea originator?

    Any ideas?

Why not discuss this with Sopheon at FEI Europe in Amsterdam next week?

    Verklaar je nader a.u.b.

    Mooi werk Bertus.
