Garmin-GRMN NPD data indicates lost market share-Underweight@MSCO
Morgan Stanley said November NPD data was modestly negative for GRMN as it lost 18 points of market share m/m and lost its number 1 position in the US market to TomTom. The firm said better than expected industry unit growth should offset share loss with market growth accelerating to up almost 600% y/y and more than 500% m/m. The analyst said share loss was due to aggressive pricing by both TomTom and GRMN and expects GRMN to fall short on Q4 EPS expectations. :theflyonthewall.com

Garmin and TomTom sell more than 20 million navigation devices in 2007
According to market researchers, the competition for market leadership among mobile navigation device manufacturers has this year been won by Garmin. Following the advantage gained over its competitor TomTom in the second quarter, the US manufacturer is expected to reassert its position in the last quarter due to strong demand. Analysts estimate that Garmin will sell 12 million navigation devices, compared to TomTom's 10 million units.
Both manufacturers anticipate the biggest increase in demand especially in the booming Asian sector which they intend to conquer from their newly established Taiwan offices. TomTom initially intends to focus on Taiwan and scout out opportunities for further expansion later. Garmin, on the other hand, will try to expand in Taiwan, China, Japan and India, and also in smaller markets like Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
