(Reuters Photo) President Ahmadinejad accused Western nations of hypocrisy

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who earlier this week sent a letter to the U.S. President George W. Bush denouncing his foreign policy, accused Western nations of hypocrisy and said that their worries over Tehran’s nuclear program were a “big lie”, BBC reported.

"They pretend that they are concerned about the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran. And this is a big lie," Ahmadinejad said at a news conference during a visit to Indonesia.

"I'll tell you, they are not concerned with nuclear programs... They are themselves engaged in nuclear activities and they are expanding day by day. They test new brands of weapons of mass destruction every day."

Ahmadinejad also accused Western nations of trying to monopolize modern science and technology in order to “sell it to other countries of the world at a very high price.''

The Iranian President also called for resistance from developing countries.

For his part, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has offered to help mediate between the West and Iran over the nuclear standoff, said that Tehran’s atomic program is “peaceful”, stressing that the dispute could be resolved by diplomacy.

The Islamic Republic denies Western accusations that it is seeking nuclear weapons, insisting that it has a right to work on a peaceful atomic program as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

So far, foreign ministers of world powers have failed to agree on a unified strategy for dealing with Iran.

Last week, the U.S. and its European allies circulated a draft resolution in the UN Security Council calling on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities or face "further action".

The U.S. is trying to win UN approval for any resolution that falls under the terms of the Chapter Seven of the UN Charter. These are legally binding resolutions on all UN members, that could pave the way for sanctions or military action.

But China and Russia strongly resist such a move, fearing it could lead to a new war.

Western officials said on Wednesday that European countries will now try to come up with a package of incentives to persuade Tehran to halt uranium enrichment.

EU officials are discussing with their Chinese, Russian and American counterparts "how to show Iran that there is a path that could lead them to a civil nuclear program that would be acceptable to the international community", the U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

"We are also, however, very clear that there is a path that if Iran continues down it, is going to lead them to isolation," she added after talks at the United Nations.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said the discussions would include "ambitious proposals, first in the area of civilian nuclear energy, then in the commercial domain, in the technological domain and, why not, in the area of security".

Talks between Iran and the EU “Big Trio” - Britain, France and Germany - failed in January, with Tehran insisting on its right to produce nuclear power
