   ePure: “Europese productie bio-ethanol levert meer veevoer dan brandstoffen op”

   De productie van bio-ethanol in Europa heeft vorig jaar meer veevoer dan brandstof opgeleverd. Dit fenomeen levert een verder bewijs dat biobrandstoffen ook aan de voedselstabiliteit een belangrijke bijdrage kunnen leveren. Dat staat is een rapport van ePure, de Europese vereniging van producenten van ethanol.

   Uit het onderzoek is gebleken dat de leden van ePure het voorbije jaar voor de eerste keer in de geschiedenis meer bijproducten voor diervoeder hebben geproduceerd dan hernieuwbare brandstoffen. Daarbij wordt gewag gemaakt van ongeveer 4,48 miljoen eiwitrijk diervoeder, waardoor een invoer van een aanvullende teelt – vooral uit Latijns-Amerika – kon worden vermeden.
   
   Voedselzekerheid
   Vele milieugroepen bestempelen de productie van biobrandstoffen op basis van landbouwgewassen als een problematische activiteit. De tegenstanders wijzen zowel naar milieuproblemen als naar de bedreiging van de voedselzekerheid.
   
   Onder meer wordt daarbij de oorlog in Oekraïne ter sprake gebracht. “Dat conflict heeft de wereldwijde voedselprijzen verder opgedreven, waardoor de voedselzekerheid in toenemende mate wordt ondermijnd”, beklemtoonde Laura Buffet, energiedirecteur bij de denktank Transport & Environment.
   
   “In een situatie met voedselonzekerheid kan er dan ook geen rol zijn weggelegd voor biobrandstoffen die uit landbouwgrondstoffen – zoals plantaardige oliën of granen – worden geproduceerd.”
   
   De ethanolindustrie weerlegt echter die aantijgingen en voert aan dat biobrandstoffen niet alleen de behoefte aan geïmporteerde fossiele brandstoffen verminderen, maar als ingrediënt van diervoeder ook de voedselzekerheid versterken.
   
   “De combinatie van voedsel en brandstof biedt een industriële, agrarische en economische meerwaarde”, beklemtoonde Valérie Corre, de voorzitter van ePure, onlangs. “Indien de markt voor biobrandstoffen wordt ondermijnd, staat ook de voedselproductie op het spel.”
   
   “Biobrandstoffen dienen tevens om de inkomsten van boeren te versterken”, stelde Corre nog. “Dit zal hen aanmoedigen om in Europa voedsel te blijven produceren. Het is een heel complexe kwestie. Dat kan niet worden opgelost met een keuze tussen voeding en brandstof.”
   
   “Ik hoop dat de besluitvormers een rationeel beleid zullen volgen en beseffen dat de combinatie van deze twee activiteiten de aangewezen optie is.”
   
   “In vergelijking met fossiele brandstoffen realiseerde ethanol in de Europese Unie vorig jaar in de uitstoot van broeikasgassen een reductie van 76,9 procent”, stipte ook David Carpintero, directeur-generaal van ePure, aan.
   
   “Dat is een nieuw record. De gegevens bevestigen dan ook nogmaals dat hernieuwbare ethanol de meest kosteneffectieve oplossing voor het terugdringen van broeikasgassen is die de Europese Unie heeft.”
   
   Keuze
   “Het beperken van de productie van biobrandstoffen is een politieke fout”, benadrukte Carpintero. “Ondanks de opkomst van voertuigen op elektriciteit en waterstof, zullen wagens met verbrandingsmotoren nog verscheidene decennia op de Europese wegen blijven rondrijden.”
   
   “Het uitfaseren van duurzame biobrandstoffen zoals hernieuwbare ethanol – zoals sommige beleidsmakers willen doen – druist niet alleen in tegen het gezond verstand, maar opent tevens de deur naar een grotere afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstoffen. Dat wil niemand.”
   
   Brandstoffen op basis van landbouwproducten zijn volgens ePure de meest kostenefficiënte manier om het wegvervoer koolstofarm te maken. “Wanneer rekening wordt gehouden met de emissies tijdens de hele levenscyclus van een voertuig, hebben verbrandingsmotoren met hoge ethanol-gehaltes op het leefmilieu een minder negatieve invloed dat hybride of elektrische wagens”, luidt het daarbij.
   
   “Men mag immers niet vergeten dat de elektriciteit in de Europese Unie vooral met behulp van fossiele brandstoffen wordt opgewekt. Dit betekent dat een elektrische wagen over zijn hele levenscyclus meer broeikasgassen zal uitstoten dan een voertuig op brandstoffen met een hoog ethanol-gehalte.”

   CMA CGM & ENGIE to Invest in Salamander Biomethane Project

   The CMA CGM Group has announced plans to co invest in the Salamander project, the first industrial and commercial unit for second-generation bio methane production, and their intention to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of renewable gas annually worldwide by 2028, to meet the needs of CMA CGM and the shipping industry.
   
   Majority-owned by ENGIE and the CMA CGM Group, the site is being considered to be located in Le Havre, backed by the support of the Havre Seine Métropole urban community via the investment program Le Havre, Ville portuaire intelligente. The unit will be fueled by dry biomass from local wood-waste sources, along with solid recovered fuel, and will produce the bio methane via pyro gasification process. The site will aim to produce 11,000 tonnes of bio methane annually, starting in 2026.
   
   The two groups plan to finalize their investment decision in late 2022. A funding request has been submitted to the European Commission's Innovation Fund. By developing the renewable gas industry and the Salamander project, both CMA CGM and ENGIE will help achieve the energy independence and energy transition goals set forth by the European Commission in the RepowerEU plan.

   BRUSSEL (ANP) - Een Belgische en een Zweedse biobrandstoffabrikant moeten rekenen op flinke boetes van de Europese Commissie. Alco Group en Agroetanol hebben verboden prijsafspraken gemaakt, oordeelt de commissie.
   
   De commissie legde het Spaanse Abengoa eerder al een boete van 20 miljoen euro op voor deelname aan het gewraakte kartel, dat tussen 2011 en 2014 actief zou zijn geweest. Abengoa kreeg een lagere straf omdat het toegaf in de fout te zijn gegaan. Maar Alco Group en Agroetanol, dat opereert onder de naam Lantmännen, weigeren dat.
   
   De producenten van bio-ethanol hebben niet alleen de vrije concurrentie en de vrije markt geschaad, maar ook het klimaat, stelt verantwoordelijk Eurocommissaris Margrethe Vestager. Door de standaardprijs kunstmatig hoog te houden, bleven biobrandstoffen volgens haar minder aantrekkelijk dan klimaatonvriendelijkere alternatieven. Dat zou de EU-maatregelen om de klimaatdoelen te halen hebben "ondermijnd".
   
   De twee bedrijven krijgen nog de kans zich te verweren achter gesloten deuren. Daarna neemt de commissie een definitief besluit. De bedrijven riskeren boetes tot 10 procent van hun wereldwijde jaaromzet.

   IISc Scientists Generate Green Hydrogen from Biomass

   An innovative technology to produce hydrogen from biomass has been developed by a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science angalore in India. The team was led by IISc Centre for Sustainable Technologies Professor S Dasappa. The process consists of two steps. In the first step, biomass is converted into syngas, a hydrogen-rich fuel gas mixture, in a novel reactor using oxygen and steam. In the second step, pure hydrogen is generated from syngas using an indigenously developed low-pressure gas separation unit.
   
   Both these technologies, developed in Dasappa’s lab, ensure that this process is a highly efficient method of generating green hydrogen – it produces 100 g of hydrogen from 1 kg of biomass even though only 60 g of hydrogen are present in 1 kg of biomass. This is because in this process, steam, which also contains hydrogen, participates in both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions (in homogeneous reactions, reactants are in a single phase whereas in heterogeneous reactions, the reactants are in two or more phases).
   
   The production of green hydrogen using this process is environmentally friendly for another reason, it is carbon negative. The two carbon-based by-products are solid carbon, which serves as a carbon sink, and carbon dioxide, which can be used in other value-added products.
   
   The project was supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. The team also acknowledges the support of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited in scaling up the technology to produce 0.25 tonnes of hydrogen per day for use in hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses.

   Leading provider of turnkey hydrogen solutions for the global green hydrogen economy Plug Power has been awarded a contract to deliver a 5 megawatt containerized proton exchange membrane electrolyzer system to international energy company Irving Oil for the production and distribution of hydrogen at its Saint John, New Brunswick refinery, the largest in Canada.
   
   Irving Oil will use the electrolyzer to help with its goal of shifting its hydrogen production to low-carbon, or green hydrogen in the future – with the investment of the electrolyzer as an important first step on this journey. This supports the company’s commitment to leadership through the energy transition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and developing more sustainable energy solutions.
   
   Initially, Plug’s electrolyzer technology, powered by the local electricity grid, will enable Irving Oil to produce 2 tonnes of hydrogen per day for refining and mobility applications. Plug’s electrolyzer systems help customers shift hydrogen production to carbon-free green hydrogen over time.
   
   Irving Oil’s initial investment in a 5 MW unit offers the opportunity to explore the role of electrolyzer technology in driving emissions reductions at the Saint John refinery while also unlocking important new market opportunities, such as making hydrogen available for regional customers.
   
   Plug’s 5 MW containerized electrolyzer system for the Saint John, New Brunswick refinery will be manufactured at Plug’s Gigafactory in Rochester, N.Y., the world’s first and largest PEM fuel cell and electrolyzer manufacturing Gigafactory. Following manufacturing, deployment of the technology at the oil refinery is expected in Q3 2023, and hydrogen production is expected to be fully operational by late 2023.

   Air Liquide Launches Biomethane Plant in China

   Air Liquide has invested and will operate its first biomethane production unit in China by the end of 2022. Located in Huaian City in the Jiangsu Province, the unit will have a production capacity of 75 GWh per year. This project demonstrates a circular economy and low-carbon approach, in line with the Group’s Sustainable Objectives and strategic plan ADVANCE.
   
   This new unit will produce biogas from agricultural and livestock waste coming from local farms and purify it into biomethane. With a total production capacity of 75 GWh/y, the unit will inject the biomethane into the city gas grid to be used for household consumption and also generate electricity for its own consumption and injection into the electrical grid.
   
   The biomethane unit will follow a circular economy approach. The digestate, a byproduct material resulting from the biogas production, will be processed to produce bio-fertilizers. These bio-fertilizers will be used in the local agriculture, which, besides food products, will also generate some waste that will be processed in this unit to produce biomethane.
   
   Biomethane has a high potential in China in particular as the Chinese government supports projects promoting the valorization of waste as part of its financial plans for the development of rural regions.
   
   Air Liquide has developed competencies throughout the whole biomethane value chain, starting with biogas production from waste, to its purification into biomethane, liquefaction, storage, and transportation to distribution. Air Liquide now has 21 biomethane operational production units in the world for a yearly production capacity of about 1.4 TWh.

   Norwegian Biozin Get EU Innovation Fund Grant

   As the first major Norwegian project, Biozin has received support from the EU Innovation Fund. The EUR 75 million grants is the largest project allocation from the EU to Norway in climate technology ever. Biozin will create the world's first full-scale plant for the production of advanced, drop-in biofuels for aircraft and road transport from waste from wood from a sawmill mainly.
   
   The plant, which will be located in Åmli in Agder, is expected to start production between 2026 and 2028. Biozin Holding is behind the project, but the company is wholly owned by Bergene Holm. Shell delivers the technology in the project as well as capital and expertise. Shell's IH2 technology is used for the first time in the project on a commercial scale. The technology enables the reuse of 80% of the carbon in the dry mass from the wood waste for use in light fuels such as aircraft.

   Eni Starts Production of Vegetable Oil for Bio Refining in Kenya

   Eni has completed the construction of the oilseed collection and pressing plant agri-hub in Makueni, Kenya, and started production of the first vegetable oil for bio-refineries. The first agri-hub will have an installed capacity of 15,000 tons with an expected production of 2,500 tons in 2022.
   
   The agri-hub will process castor, croton and cottonseeds to extract vegetable oil. These are sustainable, agri-feedstock raw materials that do not compete with the food supply chain because they come from crops that are resistant to aridity and suitable for growing on degraded soils, namely castor crops, seeds harvested from spontaneous plants (croton), and co-products of the cotton supply chain in a circular economy perspective. The facility will also produce feed and bio-fertilizers derived from the protein component of the seeds for the benefit of livestock and food production, contributing to food security. The center will also work as a training and technical support hub for farmers.
   
   Eni Kenya, its supply chain and all agri-feedstocks developed have been certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU) sustainability scheme, one of the main voluntary standard recognized by the European commission for biofuel certification (RED II). Notably, Eni is the first company in the world to certify castor and croton for biofuel use under the ISCC-EU scheme and has also enabled an African cotton mill to achieve such certification standard for the first time, offering new market opportunities to local farmers for the fiber.
   
   Eni Kenya, in partnership with ISCC within a Horizon 2020 project, has also taken steps to obtain Low ILUC (low risk of direct and indirect land use change) certification in the next few months. The first phase of the project in Kenya includes the construction of a second agri-hub to reach a total capacity of 30,000 tons per year of vegetable oil in 2023, as well as the development of associated agricultural supply chains.

   DEN HAAG (ANP) - Nederland heeft in juli bijna een vijfde meer groene energie opgewekt dan in dezelfde maand vorig jaar. En dat komt niet alleen doordat Nederland steeds voller ligt met zonnepanelen en de zon de afgelopen maand veel scheen. Energieopwek.nl, die de productie van groene energie bijhoudt, wijst erop dat kolencentrales "redelijk veel draaiden". Dat leidde tot meer bijstook van biomassa.
   
   De site schat dat ongeveer 17 procent van het totale Nederlandse energieverbruik in juli op een duurzame manier is geproduceerd. Zowel zonne-energie als biomassa had hier een groot aandeel in.
   
   Volgens Energieopwek.nl is er een onderscheid tussen groene energie en groene stroom. Puur gelet op de stroomproductie, dan werd 47 procent van de stroom in juli opgewekt uit hernieuwbare bronnen. Dezelfde maand vorig jaar was dit 38 procent.
   
   In het Klimaatakkoord is afgesproken dat dit percentage in 2030 opgelopen moet zijn tot 70 procent. Het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) heeft eerder gemeld te denken dat zelfs 75 procent haalbaar is.

    Wartsila to Provide Service for Nature Energy Biogas Upgrading

    The technology group Wärtsilä has signed a two-year tailored Service Agreement with Denmark based Nature Energy, a leading operator of biogas upgrading facilities. The agreement covers six existing biogas plants in various parts of Denmark, all of which feature Wärtsilä biogas upgrading technology (Puregas). The agreement was signed in July 2022.
    
    Special features of the agreement include an annual safety check, a know-how service that analyses operations to provide recommendations and advice, and 24/7 remote monitoring support. The operational performance, efficiency, and reliability of the six plants are enhanced through a combination of these features, together with planned maintenance.

    Chevron & Calbio to Expand Dairy Biomethane Fuel Projects

    Chevron USA and California Bioenergy announced a joint investment in their second holding company to produce and market dairy biomethane as a renewable natural gas transportation fuel in California. At signing, the holding company, CalBioGas Hilmar, secured initial funding from Chevron to build infrastructure for dairy biomethane projects in California’s Merced County.
    
    Manure storage on dairy farms results in the release of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. CalBio brings technology and operational experience to help dairy farmers build digesters and methane capture projects to convert this methane to a beneficial use as renewable natural gas, which is considered carbon negative on a lifecycle basis under California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Per the agreement, Chevron will provide additional funding for as many as seven digesters and one central upgrading facility across a cluster of dairy farms in Merced County.
    
    The cluster of digesters has been awarded California Department of Food and Agriculture grants, which must be augmented with additional capital to complete the projects. When complete – expected in 2023 – Chevron will take 100 percent of the renewable natural gas produced to market in the California vehicle fuels market.

    Sinopec Secures Certificate for Production of Bio Jet Fuel

    Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation has obtained a bio-jet fuel airworthiness certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China on 19 September. The first batch of bio-jet fuel will be shipped to the Airbus (China) Tianjin plant this month. The fuel, derived from used cooking oil, will then be used for flights across China. This will mark the first time that large-scale produced bio-jet fuel will serve the aviation industry in China.
    
    The airworthiness certificate means that Sinopec can sell the bio-jet fuel produced at Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery to aviation operators nationwide. The refinery, in the Zhenhai District of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has an annual designed processing capacity of 100,000 tonnes and adopts Sinopec's bio-jet fuel production technology SRJET to produce the fuel. The plant's first batch in June produced around 600 tonnes of bio-jet fuel.
    
    The refinery has already obtained Asia's first global RSB sustainable aviation fuel certification issued by Scientific Certification Systems, a key pass for China's bio-jet fuel to enter the international market.
    
    Compared to traditional petroleum-based aviation kerosene, bio-jet fuel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 50% throughout the entire lifecycle.

    The technology group Wärtsilä will supply a BioLNG plant in Tervete, Latvia. The order was placed by AS Agrofirma Tervete, who will utilise the plant to upgrade, polish, and liquefy biogas from agricultural waste into bioLNG. Wärtsilä will provide its Puregas CA50LBG for removal of CO2 and H2S (hydrogen sulphide) followed by an MR10 (mixed refrigerant) technology for the liquefaction stage. The installation is designed for production of 10 tons bioLNG per day. The delivery also covers the supply of spare parts and service agreement.
    
    Wärtsilä’s Puregas CA50 LBG process recovers more than 99.9 percent of the biomethane present in raw biogas by separating CO2 from the biogas through chemical absorption. Furthermore, Wärtsilä’s mixed refrigerant technology is extremely reliable and offers the lowest operating costs for liquefying biogas.

    Babcock Wilcox & NRG Ink Biomass to Hydrogen Project in Korea

    Akron Ohio US based Babcock & Wilcox has signed an agreement with NRG Korea to study the applicability of B&W’s BrightLoop technology for a hydrogen generation facility using biomass fuel in South Korea. B&W and NRG have signed a memorandum of understanding to study the technology and potentially develop the project, which would use waste biomass as feedstock to produce hydrogen for fuel cells used for electrical generation.
    
    B&W’s BrightLoop chemical looping technology is part of its ClimateBright suite of decarbonization and hydrogen technologies. The BrightLoop process uses a proprietary, regenerable particle and has been demonstrated to effectively separate carbon dioxide while producing hydrogen, steam & syngas, and is ready for commercial scale-up.
    
    NRG Korea, established in 2008, is a Korean company specializing in waste processing and manufacture of alternative fuels and holds a number of patents related to their unique processing technologies.

    Shell Petroleum has reached an agreement with Davidson Kempner Capital Management, Pioneer Point Partners and Sampension to acquire 100% shareholding of Nature Energy Biogas for nearly USD 2 billion. The acquisition will be absorbed within Shell’s current capital range, which remains unchanged. Based in Denmark, Nature Energy is a producer of Renewable Natural Gas from agricultural, industrial, and household wastes.
    
    By purchasing the shares in Nature Energy, Shell will acquire the largest RNG producer in Europe, its portfolio of cash generative operating plants, associated feedstock supply and infrastructure, its pipeline of growth projects and its in-house expertise in the design, construction, and operation of innovative and differentiated RNG plant technology.
    
    This acquisition will further increase Shell’s ability to work with its established customer base across multiple sectors to accelerate its transition to net-zero emissions. It will also support Shell’s ambition to profitably grow its low carbon fuels production and customer offering in our world-leading customer-facing Marketing business.

    AMSTERDAM - Als eerste land ontdoet Australië biomassa van het etiket ’hernieuwbaar’, met als effect dat geen enkel bos down under nog zal worden gekapt voor de opwek van energie. Het nieuws volgt op ophef over certificaten en de streep die minister Jetten (Klimaat) zette door nieuwe subsidies voor biomassacentrales. „Het kaartenhuis begint behoorlijk in elkaar te storten.” Toch weet PvdA-eurocommissaris Frans Timmermans van geen wijken.
    
    Het was al een opmerkelijk jaar wat betreft het getouwtrek rond biomassa en de vraag of verbranding van bossen nou wel verstandig is voor het klimaat en biodiversiteit, maar de klapper kwam deze maand uit Canberra. In de Australische hoofdstad zette klimaatminister Chris Bowen een streep door de classificatie van biomassa als ’hernieuwbare energie’. „We hebben geluisterd naar de gemeenschap en komen tegemoet aan de zorgen die er leven”, verklaart Bowen.

    Zijn pennenstreek smoort de Australische biomassa-industrie in de kiem. Op verschillende plekken lagen plannen klaar voor grootschalige houtverbranding. Industriële zaagmachines zouden hun tanden in Australische bossen zetten. Maar actievoerders staken er een stokje voor. „Wij beloofden energieproducenten dat we hen certificaten voor dode koala’s zouden sturen als ze hiermee zouden beginnen”, zegt Peg Putt, campagneleider van Environmental Paper Network.
    
    December bracht meer aan het licht. Het platform Mongabay zette een klokkenluider uit de sector in de schijnwerpers. Een voormalig manager deed een boekje open over de praktijken bij één van de grootste Amerikaanse exporteurs van houtpellets. Nu bleek uit onderzoek van ngo’s eerder al dat fabrikanten hele bomen en zelfs officieel beschermde Europese bossen verpulveren tot houtpellets – en ze vervolgens als duurzaam verkopen – maar nog nooit klapte een insider uit de school.

    „Wij kappen enorme, hele bomen. Het interesseert ons niets waar ze vandaan komen. Het idee van duurzaam bosonderhoud is onzin. We kunnen het hout niet snel genoeg in onze pelletfabrieken krijgen”, aldus de klokkenluider in het artikel van onderzoeksjournalist Justin Catanoso. En het idee, ook uitgedragen door eurocommissaris Frans Timmermans, dat slechts takjes en afvalhout worden gebruikt? „Wat een grap”, zegt de klokkenluider. „We gebruiken honderd procent hele bomen in onze pellets en amper afvalhout.”
    
    De Amerikaanse fabrikant Enviva ontkent de aantijgingen. Ze liet optekenen de uitlatingen te betreuren en zich niet te kunnen voorstellen dat ze zijn gedaan door een ex-collega. „De geuite opvattingen komen niet overeen met de waarden van Enviva en ze zijn evenmin correct”, aldus Enviva. De ophef in de VS is allesbehalve een ver-van-ons-bed-show. Nederland was in 2021 de grootste Europese importeur van Amerikaanse biomassa.
    
    „Zowel de stap van Australië als de onthullingen uit de VS zetten extra druk op de Europese Commissie en de actuele onderhandelingen in Brussel”, stelt Fenna Swart namens Comité Schone Lucht (CSL). Vertegenwoordigers van het Europees Parlement, de Commissie en de Raad van Ministers buigen zich nu over de definitieve invulling van de Richtlijn voor hernieuwbare energie. Als het aan Timmermans ligt, behoudt biomassa het etiket ’hernieuwbaar’.
    
    Om tegemoet te komen aan de kritiek, wil men strengere regels opnemen over certificering van biomassa. „Maar die vlieger gaat niet op”, kritiseert Swart. „Timmermans wil ons doen geloven dat als je het maar goed organiseert, biomassa duurzaam kan zijn. Maar die certificering is doorgestoken kaart, blijkt opnieuw uit de Amerikaanse onthullingen. Het is foute boel en je eindigt met een miljardenfraude.”
    
    Het Australische besluit daarentegen vindt de CSL-voorzitter ’een lichtend voorbeeld voor Brussel’. „Europa kan niet langer het wereldwijde leiderschap claimen wat betreft ’hernieuwbaar’ als nog zo’n groot deel bij daarvan afkomstig is van bosverbranding. Het is van levensbelang om te voorkomen dat in bossen vastgelegde CO2 terecht komt in de atmosfeer, en al even belangrijk om biodiversiteit te beschermen.”
    
    Russisch gas
    Een uitgemaakte zaak is het allerminst. Europa schreeuwt om energie sinds de Russische inval in Oekraïne en het afknijpen van de aardgastoevoer. Sinds het voorjaar hamert Timmermans erop dat voor hem biomassa nadrukkelijk als alternatief geldt voor Russisch gas. En ondanks de misstanden die aan het licht komen, beleeft de industrie gouden tijden. Topman en medeoprichter John Keppler van hetzelfde Enviva zegt in Forbes: „Er is nooit een betere tijd geweest om in de pelletbusiness te zitten.”
    
    Naar aanleiding van de Amerikaanse klokkenluider kreeg PvdD-Kamerlid Lammert van Raan vlak voor de kerst brede steun voor een Kamermotie.
    
    Die vraagt minister Jetten (Klimaat) om te voorkomen dat de miljarden aan Nederlandse biomassa-subsidies (tot en met 2032 staat nog 9,5 miljard euro gereserveerd) „terechtkomen bij partijen die sjoemelen met duurzaamheidscertificering.” „Aan dit gesjoemel wil je geen belastinggeld uitgeven”, zegt Van Raan. „Het hele kaartenhuis rond biomassa begint behoorlijk in elkaar te storten.”

    TotalEnergies has launched its eighteenth biogas production unit1 in France, which will be the largest in the country with a maximum capacity of 160 gigawatt hour. Named BioBéarn and located in Mourenx in the south-west of France, this new unit, fed with organic waste, has begun feeding its first cubic meters of biomethane – a renewable, decarbonized and locally produced gas – into the natural gas transmission network operated by Téréga. It will produce 69 GWh in 2023 and then ramp up progressively to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand for biogas.
    
    The project, which illustrates TotalEnergies' commitment to promoting the circular economy, will convert 220,000 metric tons of organic waste into 200,000 metric tons per year of digestate, a natural fertilizer, and 160 GWh of biomethane, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 32,000 people. BioBéarn will enable the Lacq basin, a historical gas area, to pursue a local and sustainable growth, this new unit allowing to avoid the emission of 32 000 tons of CO2 per year.
    
    The development of BioBéarn began in 2016 and involved all local stakeholders, including over 200 from farming and the food industry, the local community and elected officials, allowing the project to adapt to the needs and potential of the territory.

    Cepsa and Begas are promoting a partnership to decarbonize heavy urban transport with bioautogas. Both companies will promote using biogas and other renewably-sourced fuels in buses, delivery vehicles, waste collection trucks, and other municipal services with the aim of accelerating their energy transition
    
    This partnership aims to integrate the entire value chain of this sector (engine manufacturers, vehicle manufacturers, energy producers and consumers) with a common goal: fighting climate change by reducing the sector's carbon footprint and reducing pollution in cities. Currently, heavy urban vehicles account for 10% of the fuel consumption of the total professional transport fleet.
    
    So far, nine partners from the public and private sectors have already joined this integrative partnership: vehicle and machine manufacturers Mobility Bus, Herko, Buxo Trucks, Socage, Aebi Schmidt Ibérica, and Revenant, the companies Urbaser and Sulo, which have vehicles of this type in their fleets, and ANEPMA (National Association of Public Environmental Companies).
    
    Bioautogas can reduce CO2 emissions and levels of suspended particulate matter and NOx by up to 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels, as well as reducing noise pollution. This CO2 reduction enables vehicles to meet the requirements of the 2050 agenda today

    Wärtsilä to Supply Biogas Liquefaction Project in Sweden

    The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its biogas liquefaction technology for an important new project in Mönsterås in Sweden. The system has been ordered by Scandinavian Biogas Mönsterås, a joint venture company between Scandinavian Biogas Fuels, the majority owner, and local farmers supplying manure and agricultural waste to the project. The plant will produce bioLNG, a substitute for fossil LNG, and will be used as transport fuel for heavy vehicles, thereby contributing to a fossil-free transport system. The order was booked in Wärtsilä’s order intake in December 2022.
    
    The system will have the capacity to produce 30 tons per day of bioLNG. It will be the first project of this capacity using Wärtsilä’s amine scrubber type Puregas CA technology to pre-treat the biogas, which is then liquefied using the company’s mixed refrigerant (MR) process. The system will produce bioLNG with a negative CO2 footprint, and will thus contribute to a net reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
    
    In addition to the biogas liquefaction system, a bioLNG storage facility and export station will be supplied. Additionally, a three-year service agreement has been signed.
    
    While this 30 tons per day capacity is an advance on earlier systems, Wärtsilä believes that plants with a capacity of as much as 50 tons per day will soon be needed. This is because the biogas industry is being industrialised, and larger plants will be required to capture positive scale effects and synergies. The main challenge to up-sizing will be the availability of substrates (feedstock) from which to produce biogas.
    
    Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2024, and the plant is expected to be fully operational later that year.
