Citi, BofA May Raise Base Pay for Bankers

Following a Morgan Stanley plan unveiled last week, Citigroup and Bank of America are likely to soon raise base salaries for investment bankers to compensate for limits on annual bonuses, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are not considering an increase in base pay, the paper added, citing two people familiar with the matter.

BofA spokeswoman Jessica Oppenheim was quoted as telling the paper that "pressures in the investment-banking and capital-markets businesses continue to be intense," adding that the bank would "take the steps necessary to retain key employees."

Goldman and JPMorgan declined to comment, the paper said.

BofA, Citigroup, JPMorgan and Goldman could not be immediately reached for comment by Reuters.

Morgan Stanley said last week it raised the base salaries of senior officers to $800,000, but does not plan to raise total compensation.

The highest home loan rates in more than two months drained demand for refinancing last week, dragging total U.S. mortgage applications to the lowest level since early March, the Mortgage Bankers Association said on Wednesday.

The average 30-year mortgage rate rose 0.12 percentage point to 4.81 percent, above a low of 4.61 percent two months ago though down more than a percentage point from a year ago.

The Mortgage Bankers Association's measure of demand for loans to buy homes rose by 1 percent, but has shown scant momentum during the keenly watched spring sales season.

Refinancing has been the lifeblood of the renewed push for mortgage funding much of this year, and even that has lost steam, according to the industry group's data.

Total U.S. mortgage applications fell 14.2 percent in the week ended May 22 to 786.0 on a seasonally adjusted basis, well off a recent peak of 1,250.6 in early April.

Home loan refinance requests last week slumped 18.9 percent to 3,890.4, about half of the 6,813.5 peak in early April.

Refinancings accounted for just over 69 percent of all applications, after hovering closer to 75 percent in recent weeks.

Requests for loans to purchase homes gained 1.0 percent to 256.6 for the week.

Fixed mortgage rates still remain near record lows.

The average home price nationwide has been slashed by more than 32 percent from the 2006 highs, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller indexes.

Affordability remains at record highs, but some key obstacles remain before the housing crisis becomes history.

The market may be on the doorstep of stabilization, according to some housing analysts, but a recovery won't be forthcoming with unemployment rising and foreclosures still setting records.

"We've seen traffic on our site grow every single month since the beginning of the year so there's a huge amount of pent-up demand, particularly from first-time home buyers," said Pete Flint, San Francisco-based chief executive of Trulia, a real estate website.

But there will be bargains for the next few years, curbing the urgency to purchase immediately, he said.

Even as consumer confidence shows signs of improvement, the threat of job loss and inability to make loan payments keeps buyers at bay.

"The housing market is not going to recover until foreclosures stabilize and reduce," which is unlikely in the short run, Flint said. "I would feel a lot more hopeful for the housing market when I see some positive signs in the employment statistics."

The U.S. unemployment rate of 8.9 percent in April was the highest in more than a quarter century and is widely expected to climb.

Futures pared earlier gains Wednesday to indicate a mixed open for Wall Street as optimism from the previous day's consumer confidence data dwindled and was replaced by anxiety about what looks like certain bankruptcy for General Motors.

General Motors [GM 1.44 0.01 (+0.7%) ] was one step closer to Chapter 11 as sources told CNBC the government stands to take a 70 percent stake in the ailing automaker after only a small fraction of bond holders took part in the company's $27 billion bond swap on Tuesday. GM offered a 10 percent equity stake of the reorganized GM in return for unsecured debt.

The company is expected to announce further information on how the bond swap went on Wednesday morning. The United Auto Workers union's rank-and-file will vote on the proposed contract, whereby GM will offer buyouts to all UAW employees, on Wednesday and Thursday.

In Germany, the fate of GM's Opel unit is to be decided later in the day. The country's government has been considering offers from Italy's Fiat, Canada's Magna International and Belgium-listed RHJ International, as well as late entry China's Beijing Automotive Industry. But GM is not entertaining the Chinese bid, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Chrysler is back in bankruptcy court at 10 am New York time on Wednesday on its sale to Fiat. CNBC's Phil Lebeau reports that Chrysler could be out of bankruptcy as early as next week.

On the economic front, the real-estate sector will be in focus as existing home sales data for April is due out at 10 am New York time. At the same time, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) quarterly banking profile takes place.

The U.S. Treasury sold $40 billion of debt on Tuesday and sells another $61 billion this week. The Treasury will sell $35 billion of five-year paper later on Wednesday.

Weekly mortgage data comes out at 7 am.

In the latest survey from the National Association for Business Economists, nearly 75 percent expect the downturn to end in the third quarter. But they believe unemployment will climb, even if the economy is rebounding. Forecasters say the unemployment rate should average 9.1 percent this year. They expect GDP to contract 2.8 percent for the year, worse than the 1.9 percent drop in their previous forecast.

Precies. BAC stijgt soms knetterhard en keldert vaak ook gigantisch. Leuk tradingsaandeel. Citigroup echter voor de lange termijn op dit moment.
