   Wuhan to Deepen Production Curbs on Steel Mills
   
   SMM reported that China's major steelmaking hubs in Hebei province Wuhan will ramp up its production curbs on nine steelmakers and two coke plants during August 22-31, in a bid to improve air quality. According to the notice issued by the city’s smog-control office on August 20, nine of 14 steelmakers across the city are required to suspend all their sintering machines and all but one blast furnace for up to 10 days. Five of the nine steel mills will face additional restrictions. Coke plants are ordered to extend their coke production period beyond 36 hours during that period.
   
   In terms of the composite index and PM2.5 improvement rate, Wu’an has been the worst performer in the province since August.

   NEW YORK (AFN) - De aandelenbeurzen in New York zijn vrijdag met verliezen aan de handel begonnen. Het sentiment op Wall Street staat onder druk door de aankondiging van nieuwe Chinese heffingen op 75 miljard dollar aan Amerikaanse goederen, waaronder auto's, ruwe olie en sojabonen. Ook wordt uitgekeken naar de bijeenkomst van centrale bankiers in het Amerikaanse Jackson Hole, waar voorzitter Jerome Powell van de Federal Reserve een toespraak zal houden.
   
   De Dow-Jonesindex noteerde kort na de openingsbel 0,4 procent in de min op 26.142 punten. De brede S&P 500 daalde 0,5 procent tot 2909 punten en techbeurs Nasdaq speelde 0,6 procent kwijt op 7944 punten.
   
   De nieuwe heffingen van China zijn vergelding voor de Amerikaanse importtarieven op 300 miljard dollar aan producten van Chinese makelij. Het oplaaien van de handelsoorlog tussen beide economische grootmachten zorgt voor hernieuwde druk op bedrijven die gevoelig zijn voor de handelsvete zoals chipfondsen, maar ook automakers zoals Tesla, General Motors (GM) en Ford Motor.
   
   Foot Locker
   
   Aan het cijferfront is er aandacht voor sportwinkelketen Foot Locker, die met tegenvallende resultaten kwam. Het aandeel Foot Locker ging in de eerste handelsminuten bijna 11 procent omlaag. Cloudsoftwarebedrijf Salesforce opende daarentegen ruim 5 procent in de plus, dankzij meevallende resultaten en vooruitzichten.
   
   Verder staat computer- en printerfabrikant HP Inc (min 7 procent) in de schijnwerpers, na publicatie van cijfers en de bekendmaking dat de topman vertrekt. Ook is er overnamenieuws. Zo kondigde speelgoedfabrikant Hasbro (min 6 procent) aan voor 4 miljard dollar het Canadese Entertainment One (eOne) over te nemen. Dat bedrijf is vooral bekend als eigenaar van de populaire kinderserie Peppa Pig.

   PEKING (AFN/RTR/BLOOMBERG) - China gaat importheffingen instellen op 75 miljard dollar aan Amerikaanse goederen, waaronder auto's, ruwe olie en sojabonen. Dat heeft de Chinese regering aangekondigd. Daarmee slaat het Aziatische land terug voor Amerikaanse heffingen op 300 miljard dollar aan Chinese goederen. De Chinese heffingen voor de meeste goederen bedragen tussen de 5 en 10 procent, de extra tarieven op auto's worden 25 procent.
   
   Een deel van de Chinese importheffingen, waaronder die op sojabonen en Amerikaanse ruwe olie, wordt per 1 september van kracht. Amerikaanse sojabonen zijn al een tijdje een heet hangijzer in het handelsconflict. Peking zou de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump beloofd hebben meer sojabonen te kopen, maar Trump verweet het land zich niet aan die afspraak te hebben gehouden. De sojabonen zijn belangrijk voor Trump omdat hij Amerikaanse boeren beloftes had gedaan. Ook andere landbouwproducten als tarwe, varkensvlees en rundvlees worden vanaf 1 september extra belast.
   
   De heffingen op auto's, die van 15 procent naar 40 procent stijgen, gaan pas op 15 december in. China had de heffingen op auto's vorig jaar al eens verhoogd naar 40 procent, maar maakte die stap weer ongedaan om de onderhandelingen te ondersteunen.
   
   Trump had al eerder aangekondigd per 1 september op 300 miljard dollar aan importgoederen uit China extra importheffingen in te voeren. Later stelde hij een deel van de extra heffingen uit tot in december. Dat uitstel geldt onder meer voor smartphones en computers.

   SHENZHEN (AFN/BLOOMBERG/RTR) - Het Chinese elektronica- en telecomconcern Huawei heeft minder zwaar te lijden onder Amerikaanse handelsbeperkingen dan vooraf gevreesd. Dat zei Eric Xu, vicevoorzitter van de onderneming, op een persconferentie.
   
   De Verenigde Staten plaatsten Huawei in mei op een zwarte lijst omdat het bedrijf een bedreiging voor de nationale veiligheid zou zijn. Huawei-topman Ren Zhengfei schatte enkele maanden geleden dat die maatregel het bedrijf in twee jaar tijd 30 miljard dollar aan omzet zou kosten.
   
   "Het lijkt iets minder te worden dan dat", laat Xu nu weten. Hij verwacht dat de schade voor dit jaar op 10 miljard dollar aan misgelopen omzet neerkomt. Xu verklaarde ook dat Huawei "volledig voorbereid" is op een toekomst met Amerikaanse sancties.
   
   Huawei zou door de sancties geen technologie of onderdelen bij Amerikaanse bedrijven kunnen kopen. Een deel van de restricties werd deze week met negentig dagen uitgesteld, om problemen voor Amerikaanse klanten van Huawei te voorkomen. Tegelijkertijd werden 46 aan Huawei gelieerde bedrijven op de zwarte lijst gezet om omzeiling van de sancties tegen te gaan.

   POSCO Completed Cathode Plant in Zhejiang Province
   
   POSCO has completed the construction of its first overseas plant that produces cathodes for rechargeable batteries, signaling its entry into the global battery market. The company held a completion ceremony for the plant in Zhejiang Province, China, which can manufacture 5,000 tonsne of cathodes a year. The POSCO board approved a plan to set up a joint venture to run the plant with Huayou Cobalt in January last year, and began construction in September. POSCO has a 60% stake in the venture, named Zhejiang POSCO-Huayou ESM with the rest being held by Huayou Cobalt. Commercial production at the plant will begin at the end of 2019, a year earlier than the company's initial plan of late 2020, as ZPHE has secured stable raw material supplies from Huayou Cobalt.
   
   Senior Executive Vice President Mr Oh Gyu-seok said during the ceremony said that "ZPHE is POSCO's first overseas battery parts plant, which represents the firm's plan to expand into new growth sectors. We will strengthen our ties with Huayou Cobalt in the future to secure the leadership in technology and competitiveness in the global market. We also expect a local marketing advantage, as the plant is adjacent to global rechargeable battery makers' Chinese manufacturing bases.”

   Xining Special Steel Announced H1 Result
   
   Xining Special Steel said that its revenue in the first half of the year was 4.388 billion yuan, up 29.6% from a year earlier, and net profit was 58.4685 million yuan, up 365.05% from a year earlier, according to a semi-annual report released by Xining Special Steel on the evening of Aug. 20.
   
   According to the semi-annual report, in the first half of this year, Xining Special Steel increased production and efficiency significantly, producing 831500 tonnes of steel, an increase of 14.55% over the same period last year, and selling 866000 tons of steel, an increase of 20.58% over the same period last year, reaching the best level in history.

   The Liberal Government Hands USD 42 Billion in Construction Projects to China at Expense of Canadians
   
   The federal government announced on August 9, 2019, that it will be granting full duty remissions on illegally dumped fabricated steel from China to supply two liquid natural gas projects located in British Columbia. The two projects involved are LNG Canada and Woodfibre LNG, both located on the coast of BC. The partners in LNG Canada are made up of a consortium of investors of which include China. These two LNG projects will be modularized, meaning they will be built in smaller shippable pieces with all the equipment and components preinstalled. The modules will be connected on site, requiring very few construction workers. Essentially, in doing so, the largest project ever in the history of Canada will be handed over to Chinese businesses and workers.
   
   Mr Ed Whalen, President & CEO of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction said that “The announcement was very disappointing. These two projects, if done in Canada, would have created hundreds of thousands of construction jobs for all trades across the country. Projects like these employ skilled workers from all over Canada and not just in the local area. This is a hundreds-of-thousands-of-jobs-lost kind of mistake.”
   
   The duties on fabricated structural steel have been implemented by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal under the Special Import Measure Act after proof that China, South Korea and Spain were found to be illegally dumping into Canada. An appeal of the CITT’s decision is currently still pending in the Federal Court of Appeal.

   World Bank Debars 7 Chinese Construction Companies in Nigeria
   
   Seven Chinese construction companies, including major railway builders, have been debarred by the World Bank for violating its fraud and corruption policy. The names of the seven have appeared on the banks sanction list, meaning they are ineligible to bid for World Bank-funded projects for a specified period of time.
   
   Details of infractions were not given.
   
   The seven, all debarred for the relatively short period of 10 months to March 2020, are:

   The bank found that the company had a history of contract non-performance at the time of bidding, but misrepresented this fact when it bid. The company did not win the contract.

   Hong Kong West Kowloon Station in running for Engineering Prize in World Architecture Festival 2019
   
   Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, designed by Andrew Bromberg at Aedas has been shortlisted for this year’s World Architecture Festival Engineering Prize. It will compete against 6 other world-class designers to be the laureate. The final result will be announced in Amsterdam this December after review by a special jury in the Festival. Hong Kong West Kowloon Station is an urban icon more akin to an airport than a mere underground train station. The approximate 400,000 square meters of usable floor area, however, ensures that the flow of the passengers is as smooth as possible.
   
   Andrew Bromberg’s design of the station introduces over 3 hectares of ‘green plaza’ to the site. The outside ground plane bows down towards the entrance, whilst the roof structure above gestures towards the sky. The resulting space is a 45-meter high volume, whose energy and focus is directed towards the south façade, Hong Kong Central skyline and Victoria Peak beyond.
   
   Furthermore, people are encouraged to walk up on the station’s rooftop aligned with mature trees and shrubs and enjoy the new views and gain new connections with the city. The interior of the hall is almost like a forest, with leaning steel columns supporting a giant floating roof and lifting up 4,000 glass panels to bring in natural daylight into the building and a glimpse of the city even from the lower levels of the station.

    China Develops 10MW Permanent Magnet Generator For Offshore Wind Turbine
    
    China's self-developed 10MW direct drive permanent magnet generator for offshore wind turbines completed acceptance test and is ready for shipment. The new generator is by far the largest of its kind in the country in terms of rotor diameter and unit capacity, according to its developer, Dongfang Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Based on the working conditions in Chinese waters, permanent magnet direct drive and full power conversion technologies were used to achieve active typhoon-resistant performance.
    
    The successful delivery of the generator indicates the R&D and manufacturing capabilities of high-power offshore wind turbines. The generator will be installed at a wind farm in Xinghua Bay, east China's Fujian Province.

    China's Benchmark Power Coal Price Remains Flat
    
    Xinhua citing Qinhuangdao Ocean Shipping Coal Trading Market Co, reported that China's benchmark power coal price remained flat during the past week. The Bohai-Rim Steam-Coal Price Index, a gauge of coal prices in north China's major ports, stood at USD 81.6 per tonne.
    
    Analysts said that China's ports and power plants are destocking their high levels of stored coal, resulting in weak demand in the coal-producing regions.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) China wil met de Verenigde Staten blijven praten over een nieuwe handelsdeal. Dit zei de Chinese vicepremier Liu He maandag volgens persbureau Reuters.
    
    Eind vorige week liepen de spanningen flink op, toen eerst China met nieuwe importheffingen kwam en vervolgens de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump furieus reageerde en importheffingen voor Chinese goederen verhoogde.
    
    "We zijn bereid om de problemen op te lossen door middel van rustige onderhandelingen en samenwerking", aldus Liu He maandag tijdens een toespraak, zo bleek uit een transcriptie die Chinese staatsmedia online hebben gezet.
    
    Daarbij zei de Chinese overheid "fel gekant te zijn tegen een escalatie van de handelsoorlog', omdat het de belangen van China, de VS en de hele wereld schaadt, voegde Liu He daaraan toe.

    Shandong Iron & Steel H1 Net Profit Dips by 66% YoY
    
    Chinese steel producer Shandong Iron and Steel Groups Shandong Province based subsidiary Shandong Iron and Steel Co Ltd has reported net profit slump 65.58% YoY in the first half of 2019. The company's net profit attributable to shareholders reached CNY 577.5 million (USD 81.5 million) in the first six months, compared with CNY 1.68 billion in the same period last year. Over the period, the company saw its revenue reach 32.35 billion yuan, up 30.06% YoY.
    
    It produced 5.43 million tonnes of crude iron, 6.26 million tonnes of steel and 5.72 million tonnes of steel products in the first half, up 16.03%, 24.86% and 19.53% YoY.
