    ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) and Sasol (NYSE:SSL) said Tuesday they will collaborate on research into using green hydrogen for carbon capture technology and steel production.

    Sasol (SSL) is the world's biggest producer of fuel products and chemicals from coal, and ArcelorMittal South Africa (MT) is Africa's biggest steel producer; both companies are targeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

    Sasol (SSL) said the companies plan to jointly advance a green hydrogen and derivatives study on the Saldanha region's potential as an export hub for green hydrogen and derivatives, as well as green steel production.

    The companies plan to study the use of renewable electricity and green hydrogen to convert captured carbon from ArcelorMittal's (MT) Vanderbijlpark steel plant into sustainable fuels and chemicals.

    The initiatives could result in ArcelorMittal South Africa (MT) becoming Africa's first green flat steel producer using green hydrogen from the Saldanha works, which are currently under care and maintenance, while also reducing the carbon footprint of its flagship Vanderbijlpark works.

    Sasol (SSL) is "an undervalued play on the oil price upcycle," JP Research writes in an analysis posted on Seeking Alpha.

    Sinosynergy Launches Hydrogen Bus in Europe

As Sinosynergy's European debut, the company is showcasing a "Hydrogen Fuel Cell Journey Coach", which is jointly developed with Allenbus, Feichi, Marcopolo and Danfoss. Customized for the European market in compliance with EU-standards, the coach can carry up to 53 passengers, travel more than 500km, and regular refuel time can be as short as 5 minutes.     Lhyfe Opens Offshore Hydrogen Production Pilot Site

    Lhyfe, which has inaugurated the world’s first site for the production of hydrogen from onshore wind turbines in September 2021 and which is currently preparing to deploy its solutions Europe-wide, is convinced of the central role offshore has to play in the massification of renewable green hydrogen production. Producing hydrogen using offshore wind turbines could allow all countries with a coastline to access renewable green hydrogen, produced locally, beyond the horizon line, and in industrial quantities, to decarbonize transportation and industry. However, until now, no one has ever produced hydrogen at sea. It is to prove that it is now possible that Lhyfe is today taking on the great offshore challenge.

    Through this pilot site, Lhyfe will produce the first kilograms of renewable green hydrogen at quay and then at sea, operating automatically, in the most extreme conditions. The company has voluntarily set the bar high by installing its production unit on a floating platform, connected to a floating wind turbine.

    The Sealhyfe platform must therefore meet several major and unprecedented challenges, including:

    Performing all stages of hydrogen production at sea, i.e. converting the electrical voltage from the floating wind turbine, pumping, desalinating and purifying seawater, and breaking the water molecules via electrolysis to obtain renewable green hydrogen

    Managing the effects on the system of the platform’s motion: list, accelerations, swinging movements, etc

    Enduring environmental stress: Sealhyfe will have to survive the premature ageing of its parts (corrosion, impacts, temperature variations, etc.)

    Operating in an isolated environment: the platform must operate fully automatically, without the physical intervention of an operator, except for scheduled maintenance periods which have been optimally integrated from the design phase

    The production unit was installed on the WAVEGEM wave energy platform developed by Geps Techno. At the end of the quayside test phase, the Sealhyfe platform will integrate the SEM-REV offshore testing area, off the coast of Le Croisic, about 20 kilometres from the coast. The device will then be supplied with electricity by the pioneering floating wind turbine installed within the offshore test site in 2018 and still unique in France today.

    The electrolyser was supplied and optimized for these exceptional operating conditions by Plug Power, one of the market leaders that is strongly engaged in the offshore route. Together, Plug and Lhyfe have developed the first electrolyser capable of operating on a floating platform.

    ZeroAvia Inks Pact with Textron to Develop Hydrogen- Cessna

    Leader in zero-emission aviation ZeroAvia announced it has entered into a non-exclusive Joint Development Agreement with Textron Aviation supporting ZeroAvia’s development of hydrogen-electric, zero-emission powertrains for the Cessna Grand Caravan 208B aircraft. ZeroAvia will obtain a Supplemental Type Certificate to retrofit the Grand Caravan single-engine utility turboprop with the ZA600 zero-emission powertrain, targeting commercial passenger and cargo operators.

    ZeroAvia will develop its ZA600 powertrain system for the Grand Caravan with data, engineering and certification support provided by Textron Aviation. ZeroAvia aims to obtain certification for the 600kW powertrain as early as 2025, enabling customers to operate zero-emission flights.

    The Cessna Grand Caravan is designed and manufactured by Textron Aviation. Its high-wing design makes it a strong candidate for mounting hydrogen fuel tanks under the wings ensuring operators can maintain seat capacity or cargo space, while transitioning to true zero emission propulsion systems. The Cessna Grand Caravan platform has seen more than 2,400 aircraft delivered worldwide since the aircraft was introduced, representing enormous potential for a shift to clean propulsion. ZeroAvia has already announced several agreements with operators and lessors in relation to conversions of the Grand Caravan.

    FFI & Deutsche Bahn Join Hands for Decarbonization of Rails

    Fortescue Future Industries has announced an agreement with Deutsche Bahn to cooperate on research investigating green hydrogen and ammonia gas fuels in rail applications. FFI and DB have ambitious climate targets and are both moving as quickly as possible to remove diesel from their operations and replace it with green fuels and zero-emission solutions. This agreement outlines a proposal for FFI to participate in DB's research and development into a carbon free internal combustion engine, with the research having the potential to accelerate Fortescue’s Green Fleet rail delivery program.

    The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between FFI and DB, which centres on the companies’ intentions to work together collaboratively on decarbonisation technology opportunities.

    FFI & DB’s partnership builds on Fortescue’s announcement in March 2022 to develop with FFI and WAE the world’s first regenerating battery electric iron ore train, pre-feasibility studies are progressing, with delivery of the first Infinity Train scheduled to be operational by the end of 2027.

    75 miljard voor investeringen in groene waterstof sinds door oorlog gestegen gasprijzen

    Sinds de gasprijs door de oorlog in Oekraïne meer dan verdubbeld is, zijn wereldwijd de geplande investeringen in groene waterstof met 75 miljard euro gestegen. Dat is de conclusie uit het nieuwe rapport van de klimaatdenktank Carbon Tracker.

    Inmiddels liggen de gasprijzen 70 procent hoger dan aan het begin van de oorlog. Volgens Carbon Tracker heeft dit ertoe geleid dat de geplande investeringen in groene waterstof uit 25 landen zijn gestegen met 73 miljard dollar (74,6 miljard euro). De investeringsplannen komen zowel van overheden als private partijen.

    Duitsland, Marokko en de Verenigde Staten hebben de meeste toezeggingen gedaan. De landen die de komende decennia voornemens zijn de meeste groene waterstof te produceren zijn Marokko, Zuid-Afrika en Chili.

    Fossiel verliest waarde
    De waterstof die op dit moment wordt geproduceerd, komt voornamelijk uit fossiele grondstoffen. Omdat veel van deze productie afhankelijk is van gas, dreigen dit soort installaties op kort termijn waardeloos te worden. Carbon Tracker berekende dat meer dan 100 miljard dollar (102,2 miljard) aan fossiele waterstoffabrieken in 2030 hun waarde hebben verloren als gevolg van de hoge gasprijzen. Volgens Carbon Tracker zijn installaties in Europa en Azië het meest kwetsbaar. Kanttekening hierbij is wel dat de gasprijs de laatste paar weken weer aan het dalen is.

    Meer investeringen in waterstof nodig
    In een studie van het Internationaal Energie Agentschap kwam naar voren dat landen tot 2021 38 miljard euro aan waterstofinvesteringen hadden toegezegd. De private sector doet daar nog eens 307 miljard euro bovenop. Als de wereld in 2050 klimaatneutraal wil zijn, zijn er volgens het IEA investeringen van 1.227 miljard euro nodig.

    EnerVenue & Green Energy Ink Metal-Hydrogen Batteries Pact

    The first company to bring metal-hydrogen batteries capable of 30,000 cycles to the clean energy revolution EnerVeSSnue has announced a Master Supply Agreement with Green Energy Renewable Solutions. Under the terms of the deal, Green Energy will procure and deploy 250 MWh of EnerVenue’s storage solution over the next three years. Houston-based Green Energy is a recently launched company owned by Henrik Jensen and Jens Juul, both of whom own and operate Nicon Industries, a leading manufacturer of steel and aluminum constructions in the wind, offshore and maritime industry. Green Energy will leverage EnerVenue battery vessels to support Nicon’s innovative renewable energy and storage projects.

    The Master Supply Agreement will deliver 50MWh in 2023, 100MWh in 2024, and 100MWh in 2025. Green Energy will package EnerVenue battery vessels into customized building blocks for projects across Nicon’s onshore and offshore project portfolio. Through Green Energy, Nicon has the ambitious goal of building 1 GW of storage projects within the three years of the initial EnerVenue agreement.

    Initial projects are expected to be onshore but to support Nicon’s long-term goals, Green Energy’s energy storage solutions must meet particularly strict DNV certification and CE certification mandates for systems deployed in the offshore and maritime market. EnerVenue’s unique metal-hydrogen technology gives Green Energy exceptionally long battery life with low maintenance requirements and zero fire propagation risk—an especially crucial safety and compliance factor in offshore locations such as oil rigs.

    Many of Green Energy’s planned renewable energy projects are associated with a push by European Union countries to ramp up offshore wind power, decarbonize the maritime industry, move away from volatile gas imports, and more quickly and completely achieve climate goals.

    EnerVenue builds simple, safe, and cost-efficient energy storage solutions for the clean energy revolution. Based on technology proven over decades under the most extreme conditions, EnerVenue batteries are refined and scaled for large renewable energy integration applications. The company is headquartered in Fremont in California. The Master Supply Agreement adds to EnerVenue’s recent supply deals, including agreements with Pine Gate Renewables and Sonnell Power Solutions.

    Frankrijk, Spanje en Portugal plannen pijplijn voor waterstof en gas tussen Barcelona en Marseille

    Spanje, Frankrijk en Portugal gaan een onderzeese pijpleiding aanleggen van Barcelona (Spanje) naar Marseille (Frankrijk). De pijplijn moet eerst gas en daarna waterstof vervoeren. Ze komt in de plaats van de sinds 2003 geplande MidCat-gaspijpleiding over de Pyreneeën, waar Frankrijk geen voorstander van was.

    De plannen voor de nieuwe pijpleiding werden bekendgemaakt in de marge van de EU-top in Brussel, die ook al gewijd is aan energie.

    De Spaanse premier Pedro Sanchez, zijn Portugese ambtsgenoot Antonio Costa en de Franse president Emmanuel Macron kondigden aan dat de Groene Energiecorridor, zoals het project zal heten, het Iberische schiereiland zal verbinden met Frankrijk en de Europese energiemarkt. "Het gaat om een pijpleiding voor groene waterstof, maar in een overgangsfase ook voor gas, waar de Europese energiemarkt nood aan heeft", zei Pedro Sanchez.

    De Groene Energiecorridor vervangt de eerder geplande MidCat-gaspijpleiding. Dat project, dat al van 2003 dateert, moest gas uit Algerije over de Pyreneeën naar de rest van de EU brengen. Een deel van de pijpleiding is al aangelegd in de buurt van de Spaanse stad Barcelona.

    Frankrijk was koele minnaar van MidCat
    Spanje en Portugal dringen al jaren aan op meer energieverbindingen met de rest van het Europese continent, maar Frankijk was tegen MidCat. Frankrijk vond het project echter te duur, vreesde schade voor het milieu en trok zich in 2019 terug.

    "Spanje wil een grotere rol spelen bij de gasvoorziening in Europa", zegt correspondent Rop Zoutberg. Het land is een belangrijke invoerhub voor schepen met vloeibaar gas. Door de energiecrisis ging ook Duitsland, dat alternatieven zoekt voor Russisch gas, ijveren voor Midcat. Dat project komt er nu niet, maar dus wel een alternatief.

    Macron, Sanchez en Costa komen op 8 en 9 december opnieuw samen in Alicante, Spanje, om het akkoord te finaliseren. Volgens de drie leiders moet het nieuwe project ook op Europese steun kunnen rekenen, omdat het past in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering en de doorvoer van energie in Europa versterkt.

    Duitsland ontvangt eerste lading waterstof uit Emiraten

    HAMBURG (ANP) - Duitsland heeft vrijdag een eerste lading waterstof uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten ontvangen. Minister Robert Habeck van Economische Zaken vierde dat door in de haven van Hamburg symbolisch een kraan open te draaien. Met de import van waterstof wil Duitsland de afhankelijkheid van gas sneller afbouwen. Het land wil zelf ook waterstof gaan produceren.

    Waterstof wordt gezien als een belangrijke methode om de economie te vergroenen. Het kan veel van dezelfde functies als gas vervullen, maar zonder de uitstoot. Als het daarnaast wordt opgewekt met schone elektriciteit is het volledig CO2-neutraal.

    Hamburg wil een belangrijke importhaven voor waterstof worden. De deal met de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, die Habeck eerder dit jaar tijdens een bezoek aan het Arabische land overeenkwam, moet daarbij helpen. De haven in Rotterdam heeft vergelijkbare ambities als Hamburg.

    De waterstof uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten is zogenaamde blauwe waterstof. Dat is waterstof die gemaakt is met stroom die opgewekt werd met fossiele brandstoffen. Daarbij is wel de CO2-uitstoot afgevangen. Als die niet was afgevangen was de waterstof aangeduid als 'grijs'.

    Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicle Arrives in St Helens Borough

    The UK's first custom-built, hydrogen-fuelled waste collection vehicle has arrived in St Helens Borough, ahead of its integration into the council's fleet. The FAUN Zoeller Bluepower is a hydrogen-electric hybrid vehicle that uses an electric motor for drive and a hydrogen fuel cell to charge the battery while the vehicle is operating, meaning zero carbon emissions while in operation.

    The vehicle is also dramatically quieter than traditional diesel vehicles and has been successfully piloted in Germany over the past two years. The council is hoping to invest in additional Bluepower vehicles in the future.

    FAUN Zoeller UK have developed the vehicle with Daimler AG based in Stuttgart, St Helens Borough's historic twin town in Germany.

    This pioneering investment by St Helens Borough Council forms part of its wider fleet and operational modernisation, and its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

    Michigan to Create Midwestern Hydrogen Coalition

    Michigan Governor Ms Gretchen Whitmer has announced the Midwestern Hydrogen Coalition, a bipartisan partnership between Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Indiana, to accelerate the development of a robust clean hydrogen economy in the Midwest. The coalition will provide a regional framework for establishing a strong clean hydrogen market that will create good-paying jobs, promote zero-carbon energy, and improve public health.

    Clean hydrogen can be a key component of decarbonizing the transportation, agriculture, and industrial sectors. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law appropriated USD 8 billion for the US Department of Energy to fund a set of Clean Hydrogen Hubs, which are networks of clean hydrogen producers, potential clean hydrogen consumers, and connective infrastructure located in proximity.

    Multiple midwestern industrial and university-led groups are expected to compete for DOE funding for hydrogen projects. The Midwest Hydrogen Coalition will work with them to make their projects more competitive through collaboration on policy development, permitting and asset planning.

    Quantron Orders 140 Fuel Cell Engines from Ballard Power

    Ballard Power Systems has announced a minority equity investment in Quantron AG, a global electric vehicle integrator and an emerging specialty OEM, to accelerate fuel cell truck adoption. As part of Quantron’s financing round of up to 50 million euros, Ballard’s investment proceeds will be used by Quantron to develop their truck fuel cell vehicle platforms, under the terms of a Joint Development Agreement. Ballard will be the exclusive fuel cell supplier to Quantron for these platforms.

    As part of the strategic partnership, Quantron committed to purchase 140 FCmoveTM modules totaling approximately 17MW, with an option to purchase an additional 50 units. The fuel cell modules are expected to be delivered in 2023 and 2024.

    The zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle platforms developed by Quantron will integrate Ballard fuel cell products for various truck applications in Europe and the US. Quantron’s initial market focus is Germany, where their new 44T fuel cell truck is to be unveiled at IAA Transportation 2022.

    Pursuant to its strategic investment, Ballard will have the right to appoint a representative to Quantron’s Board of Directors.

    French Government Support McPhy Gigafactory Project

    Electrolyzers and refueling stations specialist McPhy Energy announced that the French government is accelerating its plan to make France the leader in carbon-free hydrogen by 2030. In this context, the McPhy Gigafactory project will benefit from a public aid from the French State, for a maximum amount of EUR 114 million, which is part of the PIIEC Hy2Tech" approved by the European Commission on 15 July 2022. The Belfort site has been pre-selected by McPhy for the implementation of this Gigafactory project.

    With this project, McPhy is targeting 3 objectives:

    Innovation, through the development of new generation alkaline electrolyzers, in terms of size, components and integration within platforms

    Industrialization of large-scale production to meet the needs of the European market, in particular, to contribute to the decarbonization of industry, mobility and energy

    Collaboration with numerous partners of the Hydrogen ecosystem in Europe and dissemination of knowledge with academic, industrial and research stakeholders

    The final investment decision for this Gigafactory project will be taken by McPhy shortly, after the contracting of the terms of the public aid with Bpifrance.

    H2 Clipper’s Latest Patent Improves Sky Hydrogen-Powered Airships

    Santa Barbara California based hydrogen-powered airships developer H2 Clipper is granted US Patent 11,396,356 B2 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent, entitled “Method and Apparatus for Lighter-Than-Air Airship with Improved Structure and Delivery System,” incorporates an improved structural design for operating H2 Clipper’s Pipeline-in-the-Sky hydrogen-powered airships. Specifically, the patent addresses autonomous and remotely piloted operation.

    In the new patent, the novel exoskeleton connects to a nose cone that includes a cockpit cabin for controlling the airship’s operation from a single location that can be physically separated from the exoskeleton in the remote event of a catastrophic incident and for autonomous and/or remotely piloted operation. An improved means is also provided for landing and unloading cargo, and through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, the airship is specially designed to efficiently pick up, transport, deliver and effect the return of payloads from a remote point of origin to where such payloads are desired. This design has particular utility for picking up, transporting and delivering goods manufactured in remote locations to areas of high density.

    This is H2 Clipper’s tenth issued patent, focusing on enhancements over previous airship designs and operating modes. The patent represents a continuation of the work that H2 Clipper began in 2008 when it filed for its initial patent, which was issued in 2012. In addition to the company’s previously issued patents, it also has numerous currently pending US and international patent applications directed to airship design and pipeline distribution. H2 Clipper anticipates completing the construction of a prototype in 2025, with the goal of flying its first full-sized airship in 2028.

    Atkins to Design INEOS Hydrogen Plant at Grangemouth

    INEOS has taken a huge step forward in delivering its plans for a world-scale low-carbon hydrogen plant at Grangemouth as it awards a key contract for the design of the plant to Atkins. The hydrogen plant, expected to be operational by 2030, will further reduce emissions from the site by 1million tonnes per year as the site targets net zero by 2045. In developing a hydrogen hub at Grangemouth we will be supporting other end users of this low-carbon fuel source to reduce their carbon footprints too

    The new hydrogen plant, slated for operation in 2030, will see INEOS remove more than 1million tonnes of carbon emissions from its already improving performance since it acquired the site in 2005* and comes on top of other significant investments at its site in Grangemouth.

    Fundamental to INEOS’ Hydrogen project will be access to the Scottish Cluster carbon capture and storage infrastructure. The CO2 from the hydrogen plant will be sent directly offshore to be permanently and safely stored in rock formations deep below the North Sea.

    In addition to the Scottish Cluster we are actively involved in the Forth Green Freeport bid, which if successful, will further support the early development of our hydrogen production facility and our ambitions to achieve greater than 60% carbon reduction by 2030 on the road to our net zero commitment by 2045.
