   Burgemeester: Rusland valt Charkov aan met S-300-raketten
   Rusland heeft Charkov vroeg in de ochtend van 14 januari aangevallen met S-300-raketten, waarbij het Industrialnyi-district van de stad is geraakt. Dat heeft de burgemeester van Charkov, Ihor Terekhov, op Telegram gezegd, zo meldt Kyiv Independent.
   Volgens de burgemeester zijn twee raketten afgevuurd op het stadsdeel, in tegenstelling tot eerdere berichten dat er vier raketten de stad zouden hebben geraakt. 
   Terekhov zei dat de raketten "gericht waren op de infrastructuur" zonder verdere details te geven over wat de raketten raakten. Informatie over slachtoffers en schade wordt nog steeds onderzocht op de plaats van de aanval, aldus de burgemeester van Charkov.

   Raketaanval gericht op infrastructuur in Kiev
   
   Kiev is zaterdagochtend getroffen door een Russische raketaanval die vooral gericht leek op belangrijke infrastructuur in de Oekraïense hoofdstad. Volgens de burgemeester van Kiev zijn er geen slachtoffers gevallen en zijn de raketten neergekomen in gebieden waar niemand woont. Onder meer de wijk Dniprovski zou zijn getroffen.
   Burgemeester Vitali Klitsjko roept inwoners van Kiev op om in de schuilkelders te blijven. "De details van de aanval worden nagegaan", aldus een medewerker van president Zelenski. 
   Getuigen zeggen tegen persbureau Reuters dat er meerdere explosies te horen waren voor het luchtalarm afging in Kiev. Meer details over de aanval zijn nog niet bekend, volgens de autoriteiten.
   Kiev is regelmatig doelwit van Russische raketaanvallen sinds Rusland Oekraïne in februari van 2022 binnenviel.
   Twee gouverneurs in Oekraïne denken dat Rusland nog meer luchtaanvallen gaat uitvoeren zaterdag. Volgens Vitali Kim, gouverneur van de regio Mikolajiv, zijn er zeventien Russische bommenwerpers opgestegen. Gouverneur van de regio Cherkasi, Igor Taburets, vermoedt dat Rusland ook nog meer raketaanvallen gaat uitvoeren. Hij roept mensen op in schuilkelders te blijven.

En dat laffe Navoland Duitsland bezit niet het historische besef of de morele moed om uit hoofde daarvan tanks aan de Oekraïne te geven.
   Walg van de westerse lafheid. Wat zijn wij ver afgedaald. Indien men toch leest dat Rusland van alles uitvoert in de Oekraïne en men het standpunt inneemt dat het westen vooral Rusland niet moet tarten dan vraag je je soms toch af waar men het lef vandaan haalt zich beschaafd te noemen.

    Verenigd Koninkrijk gaat tanks leveren aan Oekraïne
    
    Het Verenigd Koninkrijk gaat tanks leveren aan Oekraïne. Dat maakt de Britse premier Rishi Sunak bekend na een gesprek met de Oekraïense president Zelenski op zaterdag.
    
    Sunak beloofde om Challenger 2-tanks en extra artillerie-systemen te leveren om de steun aan Oekraïne op te voeren.
    
    Zelenski verwelkomde de Britse beslissing nu Oekraïne zijn bondgenoten aanspoort om zwaardere wapens te sturen. De Oekraïense president schrijft op Twitter Sunak te bedanken "voor de besluiten die niet alleen ons versterken op het slagveld, maar ook het juiste signaal afgeven aan andere partners".
    
    In verschillende landen woedt momenteel discussie over het leveren van tanks aan Oekraïne. Regeringen zijn terughoudend in het sturen van zwaardere wapens uit vrees voor verdere escalatie en meegetrokken te worden in de oorlog.
    
    De afgelopen week beloofden Frankrijk, Duitsland en de Verenigde Staten gepantserde voertuigen te sturen, maar Oekraïne hoopt op zwaardere tanks. De Challenger 2 is de belangrijkste gevechtstank van het Britse leger.

    Soledar remains under control of Ukrainian military, but fighting underway in the town itself – region’s head
    
    The town of Soledar in Donetsk region remains under the control of Ukrainian servicemen, but intense fighting is taking place in the city, said head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko.
    
    "Soledar and Bakhmut remain the hottest destinations. Soledar is controlled by the Ukrainian authorities and our military controls it. However, urban fighting and fighting outside the city continue, because the enemy is trying to advance in several directions," Kyrylenko said on the national telethon on Saturday.
    
    According to him, the Russian occupiers are suffering huge losses in the town "without any exaggerations." "In the literal sense of the word, they stretch their way with the bodies of their own Wagner members or regular Armed forces, depending on who they periodically bring after losses in this direction," the head of the regional administration noted.
    
    According to him, the front line is under constant shelling, the situation in the city is difficult, "but controlled."     New video from the eastern Ukrainian town of Soledar shows a massive explosion at a building that appears to have been a shelter for Russian troops.
    
    The video shows between a dozen and 20 soldiers walking along a railroad track before turning along a street on the northern outskirts of the town. 
    
    After they reach a building with a distinctive green roof, the explosion destroys the building, with debris flying upwards.
    
    The video has been geolocated by CNN. A longer version of the video has been posted by a Ukrainian soldier in the area. The soldier, with the codename Madiar, is a commander in a Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance unit.
    
    He provides a commentary over the video, saying, "There are 10 of them. There are 10 more here. And all of them obviously going in the same direction. They are settling in. In groups of 20+ people. In the houses. On the outskirts of Soledar."
    
    "In the morning we've been watching this place," he says. "There was some kind of activity there. Something was being loaded and unloaded."
    
    He describes the building with the green roof as "some kind of a headquarters for them."
    
    Madiar says there should be at least 25 Russian soldiers there.
    
    He then asks: "What should we do? HIMARS or MLRS?" before the explosion is seen. 
    
    HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) is a lighter wheeled artillery system capable of firing many of the same types of ammunition as MLRS, which stands for a Multiple Launch Rocket System.

    Poland transfers 8,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine
    
    Ukraine has recently received a batch of Starlink terminals from Poland.
    
    Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced that eight thousand terminals were included in this batch.
    
    According to him, some of them will be used to ensure communication in the “Invincibility points”.
    
    “Recently, we have received a new batch from Poland – 8 thousand terminals. We will transfer a significant part of them to Invincibility points. Hundreds of Starlinks are already working there so that Ukrainians can call an ambulance or work during blackouts,” Fedorov pointed out.

    'Twitterconvoy's' 1000th vehicle heads from Latvia to Ukraine

    Daar gaat het in wezen niet om. U tracht weer een ontwijkende discussie op gang te brengen waar dat laffe Westen ( uitgezonderd de VS, het UK en deBaltische Staten) zo goed in is.
    Stel dat er een gijzeling bij uw buren aan de gang is. Hun woning is al beschoten en de buurvrouw is verkracht en daarna vermoord. Nu staan de buurtbewoners toe te kijken en grijpen niet in omdat ze bang zijn dat e.e.a. escaleert. Oh ja, ze roepen wel boe tegen de gijzelnemers en gooien wat (botte) messen naar de gijzelaars. Die daarvoor natuurlijk dankbaar dienen te zijn vanwege dat heldhaftige gedrag van hun buurtgenoten.
    Wat heb ik dan een respect voor een vriendin van mij die bovenop een haar onbekende persoon ging liggen om hem te beschermen tegen tuig dat hem in elkaar aan het slaan en trappen was. Zo hoort het en niet anders. Dan toon je beschaving.

    Russia's Vladimir Putin afraid of coup, will retire in 2023 - report

    A former ally of the Russian President talked about the possibility that Putin might retire soon, rather then potentially getting killed in a coup.
    
    A source who was close to Putin once claimed that "the president will nominate his chosen heir already this year, instead of risking his downfall," the British Daily Mail reported on Friday. This comes after the Russian president's popularity is reportedly in a freefall because of repeated military failures in the war in Ukraine.
    
    According to his former ally, Putin will want to transfer the power to his chosen successor and retire to his palace near the black sea, rather than risk a coup against him, similar to what happened to Qaddafi and other dictators.
    
    Furthermore, he claimed Putin will seek to give up power, negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and also not be part of the elections which are planned for 2024.
    
    He said, "the Russian despot will probably nominate one of his loyalists like the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin or his deputy Chief of Staff Dimitry Kuzak."
    
    Putin is scared
    
    Putin got flustered by the rise of Yevgeny Prigozhin, one of the owners of the Wagner mercenary group. Since the start of the war, Prigozhin has been fighting for more power and resources, which shows his desire to push Putin to the side.
    
    The source said that "Putin's whole apparatus is looking wearily at Prigozhin and is scared he will come after them." He added that "Putin really might not be reelected if he will stand again. He would try to fake the outcome, but this is too much of a risk for the system. He may appoint a trusted person as president, if they could win the elections. Still, the will also have to negotiate will Ukraine and the West."
    Discontent is rising
    
    Earlier this month, British military experts estimated that Putin might have a revolution on his hands in the next two months, if he can't change the situation in Ukraine for the better.
    
    "The Russians are trying to wear down the Ukrainian's will to resist by shelling Ukrainian cities and killing Ukrainian soldiers in large numbers," noted one senior expert, "now it's really up to the Ukrainians to continue attacking the Russians and kill as many Russians as possible to deplete their forces as well. So in a sense we are in a kind of war of attrition that could develop potentially, from one side or the other." 
    
    "Putin is quite concerned about the impact of large-scale casualties on cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, and that's why he's focused a huge amount of time on recruiting from some of the peripheral areas like Siberia," he added, "We've seen unprecedented civil protest movements happening in some of these peripheral areas. They're not getting much attention because the media in Russia hardly covers it."

    VOLYN REGION, Ukraine, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Burst river banks, thick mud and waterlogged fields could be seen for miles around northwest Ukraine's border with Belarus on Thursday, making the prospect of a Russian assault from across the border unlikely for now despite recent warnings from Kyiv.
    
    Ukrainian officials have warned of a new looming Russian assault, with Belarus to the north named as one possible launchpad, as Moscow seeks to revive its faltering invasion.
    
    Russia and its close ally Belarus have beefed up their joint military grouping in Belarus and plan to hold joint aviation drills there from next Monday.
