Cube in Germany to be Carbon Concrete Building without Steel

Design Taxi reported that concrete is usually reinforced with steel, but this cube at the Technical University of Dresden is planned to be the world’s first to leave that technology behind. It will be reinforced with carbon fibers instead, which allows for lightweight design while retaining structure and strength. Researchers from the Institute for Solid Construction at TU Dresden have been collaborating with the architecture firm HENN to create this experimental building, which covers comprise 220 square meters and includes laboratories and event rooms. The roof can also be opened into a skylight, allowing nature to pour in and fill the space.

It acts as the centerpiece of the C3 (Carbon Concrete Composite) project carried out by TU Dresden, which investigates the new material. This is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Senior carbon scientist Dr Erik Frank told Dezeen “Carbon fibers are light yet robust. They’re more flexible and save resources during construction. You can make the concrete much thinner while being able to carry heavy loads, so you can design completely different shapes. The aim is to get away from the huge amounts of concrete that are being used today.”

Additionally, with the reduction of steel comes the reduction of CO2 emissions: up to 50% are cut, which is a promising figure for more Earth-friendly architecture and construction moving forward.

The Cube’s design aims to reflect this innovative material, too. With the “fluid merging of ceiling and walls in a single form” to interpret the “textile nature of carbon fibers,” the design also hopes to suggest future architecture pairing environmentally-friendly design with “radical rethinking of the most basic architectural elements.”

Tangshan Unveils Measures to Cut Steel Output for Winter Olympics

Steel mills in North China’s Hebei province are bracing themselves for intensified curbing on local steel industry in the winter of 2021-2022. China's Hebei Province’s steelmaking hub Tangshan has issued the Implementation Plan for Air Quality Assurance for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympic Games, requiring the city to reduce crude steel output by 12.37 million tonnes ahead of these events in 2021. There will be two phrases for air quality assurance for the games. The first one will be until January 27, 2022, while the second one will be during January 28-February 20 and February 27-March 13. A large number of steel mills in Tangshan have already been implementing some crude steel output cuts -from 10-30%, but the pace of output curbs is expected to intensify towards the end of the year.

As China moves to reduce emissions in steel sector, China Iron & Steel Association had recently said that “There will be more notable reductions in crude steel output along with government led environmental checks, the, outlining the prospects for the steel market in the second half. Daily crude-steel output at major mills fell 5.6% in the first ten days of July from June, with most of the cuts taking place at plants in Shanxi, Hubei and Hebei provinces and mills including China Baowu Steel Group and HBIS Group. Steel exports may drop after the country imposed higher tariffs on overseas shipment. Domestic demand for steel will also slow in the second half after industries front loaded consumption.”

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is an international winter multi-sport event that is scheduled to take place from 4 to 20 February 2022, in Beijing and towns in the neighbouring Hebei province in the People's Republic of China. The 26 venues for these sports are mainly spread around Beijing except that all other skiing events will be held in Zhangjiakou city in Hebei province, 220 km from downtown Beijing

Chinese government’s attempts to cap steel output at below last year’s record 1,065 million tonnes have had limited success so far. In the first half of 2021, Chinese steel mills have churned out 12% more crude steel at 564 million tonnes and to achieve impossible goal of capping crude steel output in 2021, Chinese steel mills will have to reduce crude steel production in July-December 2021 to about 500 million tonnes, ie reduction of almost 10 million tonnes a month. China says it’s committed to continuing production cuts in steel, and its mills in steelmaking city Tangshan have reportedly lowered output after being warned of punishments if they overproduce. But not everyone agrees that the government will have its way. In other words, it will be virtually impossible for China to produce less steel this year compared to last year but production is likely to be lower in the second half of the year, and crude steel output will be up around 8-9% this year.

Baowu Group Pledges Restructuring & Output Cuts in H2

Reuters reported that world's biggest steel producer China Baowu Steel Group pledged to cut output in the second half of the year in response to Beijing's commitment to limit annual production in order to reduce carbon emissions as it would ensure efficiency and performance in the remainder of the year, while controlling production. Baowu Steel, citing its Chairman Mr Chen Derong, said in a statement “This is a political issue with no room for bargaining, and it must be resolutely implemented. It would push forward with its joint reorganisation to enhance its industry status and performance in the second half. Last month, the company was working with Shandong Iron and Steel Group on a strategic restructuring.”

China's state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council owned Baowu Group produced 115 million tonnes of steel in 2020.

JSPL Reports INR 4524 Crore EBIDTA for Q1 of 2021-22

Despite adverse market conditions due to second wave of COVID-19 and ensuing lockdowns, Jindal Steel & Power Limited has been able to post resilient set of numbers in Q1 of 2021-22. The company has reported a record first quarter steel production of 2.01 million tonnes. While domestic demand was subdued during the quarter, buoyant export markets continued to provide support with exports accounting for 34% in 1QFY22. Share of exports would have been higher in the absence of logistical challenges posed by unfavourable weather leading to congestion at ports. Volume growth coupled with upward momentum in steel prices resulted in standalone net revenues rising by 65% YoY to INR 10,385 crore. However, during the quarter long steel prices were relatively subdued compared to flat steel prices, which were also boosted by buoyant export markets. The quarter also witnessed sharp rise in input costs, impact of which was compounded by exhaustion of low cost iron ore inventory.

During Q1 of 2021-22, JSPL Standalone reported steel production (incl. pig iron) of 2.01 million tonnes, up 20% YoY, a record first quarter production. While the domestic demand was severely impacted by the second wave of COVID-19, lucrative export markets aided company's effort in improving sales compared to previous year (1.61million tonne, +3% YoY). Share of exports increased to 34% in Q1 of FY22 compared to 27% in the prior quarter. Higher sales volumes and uptick in the steel prices resulted in revenues rising by 65% YoY to INR 10,385 crore. EBITDA also surged to INR 4,524 crore, partially offset by higher costs. Strong operating profit and declining finance costs have resulted in JSPL standalone posting a quarterly profit of INR 2,661 crore.

Pellet production in 1QFY22 increased to 2.16 million tonne (up 6 % QoQ). External sales of pellets also increased to 0.40 million tonnes (up 39% QoQ) due to higher production of pellets as steel production was broadly stable QoQ.

UK Drops AD Duty on PC Wire Imports from China

UK’s Trade Remedies Authority has published its final recommendation on the PSC wire transition review. Anti-dumping duties on PSC wires and strands from China no longer apply, following the publication on 2 August 2021 of a Trade Remedies Authority report recommending that the duties be removed. The measures have been removed for PSC wires and strands imported from China after 30 January 2021, 30 days after the date the measure transitioned from the EU into UK law, as specified by the legislation. The Secretary of State for International Trade has decided to uphold the TRA’s recommendation and the duties have accordingly been removed. This means importers of these products from China will no longer have to pay duties of up to 46%.

Trade Remedies Authority assessed the trade remedies measure on PSC wire as part of its work to assess a number of measures which the UK inherited from the EU system. The domestic industry for this product also confirmed that they did not want the measure to continue.

This review concerned an anti-dumping measure applying to certain pre and post stressing wires and wire strands of non-alloy steel originating in the People’s Republic of China which began on 30 July 2020. The period of investigation was 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019. In order to assess injury, the TRA examined the period from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019.

GMS Market Commentary on Ship Breaking in Week 31

World's leading cash buyer of ships for recycling GMS said that “Prices across the Indian sub-continent ship recycling markets continue their impressive upward trajectory this week, as end Buyers press on for any available tonnage, at levels well above USD 600/LT LDT, especially in the case of Bangladesh and a now firming Pakistani market. The summer months have brought with them a relative paucity of units, which is somewhat surprising given the record levels we are witnessing once again and the fact that the market has more than doubled in just the space of a year. Any supply of vessels is largely from the beleaguered Tanker and Offshore sectors, but there are still the odd Ropax & Passenger units and Reefers to talk of as well, that are being diverted primarily into India. Dry Bulk and Container chartering markets have been flying for much of this year, so we have seen very few of these units being proposed for recycling, as Owners are now opting to pass surveys on vessels almost 30 years of age, as such have been the freight earnings in 2021.”

GMS said “On the Covid-19 front, the Delta variant continues to increasingly cause concern across the globe, and the sub-continent has yet to reach a satisfactory level of vaccinations to begin reopening fully, just like the UK, Israel, USA and various other Western nations have been. Even Turkey continues to battle fresh infections rates of over 22K fresh cases per day, but the situation there is still better than the sub-continent at present.”

GMS added “Overall, despite lockdown restrictions remaining in place, especially across Bangladesh in particular, ship deliveries and beachings continue in all locations and port reports are seeing a trickle of vessels arrive over each tide.”

    GMS Pricing

    India/Bangladesh/Pakistan – Week 31, Stable

Dry Bulk – USD 560-590 per LDT

Tankers - USD 570-600 per LDT

Containers - USD 580-610 per LDT

Russel Metals Reports Strong Results for Q2 of 2021

Leading US service center Russel Metals Inc announced that revenues in Q2 of 2021 reached USD 1.07 billion, compared to USD 588 million in Q2 2020. Net income for the quarter totaled USD 118 million, compared to USD 5 million in Q2 of 2020 and $81 million in Q1 2021. Russel Metals said “The steel distributors segment benefited from improved demand, higher steel prices and low inventories in the supply chain, and reported strong growth in both revenues and operating profit. In the energy products segment, the recovery of oil and natural gas prices and the relatively mild spring break up in Canada led to improved operating profit in what is typically a seasonally slow second quarter.”

It added “Steel prices continued to rise in the 2021 second quarter. Metals service centers experienced an increase in selling price per ton of 53 percent compared to the 2020 second quarter and 19 percent compared to the 2021 first quarter. Tons shipped in metals service centers increased 25 percent from the same period in 2020 and 3 percent compared to the 2021 first quarter. The 2021 second quarter volumes were above the pre-pandemic level due to increased demand. Steel distributors also experienced an increase in demand and selling price per ton due to low inventory levels in the supply chain and product shortages, the company said, adding that demand in the energy products segments continues to recover, albeit at a slow pace.”

Outlook - Overall demand remains solid with strong backlogs, limited inventory in the supply chain and extended lead times expected to continue over the near term. The positive momentum of steel prices continues into the 2021 third quarter, however, gross margins are expected to moderate due to the rising cost of inventory. For metals service centers and steel distributors there is typically a seasonal slowdown in July and August due to a reduction in the number of operating days, but overall demand is expected to remain steady.

Tenaris Uses VR & AR to Start Ladles at Siderca Mill in Campana

Tenaris’s Siderca mill in Campana in Argentina has recently started up the new ladles for a furnace at the steel shop with remote assistance from Italy, by using a mixed reality device. The tool combined virtual and augmented reality to bring vast amounts of information and unmatched resources to the fingertips of the operator who carried out start-up operations. Through the use of the see-through viewfinder, the tool allowed the operataor in Argentina and the Tenaris expert in Italy to visualize and navigate 3D projections, videos, or data archives for the start-up. The tool’s HD cameras and sensors translated hand movements into commands, which facilitated the remote assistance. The use of mixed-reality lens saved the start-up technicians a trip from Europe, and also kept the project on track by avoiding the mandatory delay due to COVID-related isolation requirements for travellers entering Argentina.

With this being a pilot project, Tenaris’s IT and Automation teams are now analysing the possibility of deploying additional units at other facilities.

Fundamentals of Heat Treatment of Steel

Mr Matt from Sheffield Gauge Plate shared a blog on heat treatment of steel. Heat treatments are performed to alter the properties, chemicals and physical appearance of the steel grade. However, steel is heated due to many factors, such as the grade and the desired application. Heat treatment is a highly controlled process that allows for many benefits, increased hardness, durability, corrosion and temperature resistance properties to be added to the steel. The process involves heating, holding at that temperature and cooling until it reaches its desired state. The end application will always define the heat treatment process used. Overall, conducting a heat treatment would be used to alter and strengthen the structure of the metal.

    Stage 1 – Heating Steel

The first stage of the process is the heating stage. During this stage, the steel should be heated to the recommended temperature set by the steel manufacturer. It’s crucial to heat the object uniformly to reach the temperature evenly and at a slow rate. Depending on the size of the object that is being heated, a furnace may need to be used. If, when heating the element, you do not keep heat consistent throughout, you run the risk of distortion or cracking taking place within the steel. Other factors such as the heat conductivity of the metal will determine how much and how fast you can heat. Finally, the condition will play a significant factor, as parts that have not been subject to heat in the past should be heated slower than those that have been.

Stage 2 – Holding The Steel

The next step when heat treating steel involves holding the steel at the correct temperature for a period of time. Once the steel has been heated up uniformly, you should hold it at that temperature for the recommended time set by the manufacturer. The amount of time that you should hold the steel changes depending on the size of the steel and the tool steel grade you are treating. When holding, you should follow the idea that the whole part should be held in two steps. First, uniformly hold at a consistent temperature just below the desired. Otherwise known as “preheating,” you’ll then be able to raise the temperature to the total final temperature without risking cracking and distortion.

Stage 3 – Cooling The Steel

Once the steel has been held for the desired amount of time, the final step of the process would be to bring the steel back to room temperature. There are many different ways that steel can be cooled. For example, oil, water, air, brine and gas can bring the temperature back down. Each of these mediums will have a different impact on the chemical structure and achieved hardness. The cooling process is often referred to as quenching steel. However, quenching is still the same process of cooling the item back down using one of the mediums mentioned above.

Some of the different methods used include annealing, normalising, tempering, hardening, ageing and stress relieving.

    Annealing Vs Tempering Steel

Both annealing and tempering are methods used to treat the steel. Although they are similar, the outcome of the treated steel will be different. The difference between annealing and tempering is that annealing should increase ductility, whereas tempering should improve the toughness and remove excess hardness from the finished project. Furthermore, tempering steel happens after the heat-treated steel has been cooled and solid again. Once the steel has been annealed and is in an untempered state, it is usually too brittle for end-use. Therefore, tempering will allow for excess hardness to be removed.

When tempering, you should increase the temperature of your steel product to below the lower critical point. The temperature that you’re able to raise the steel to depends on the application.

    Normalising

Normalising involves raising the steel temperature to 40 degree C above the hardening temperature and then cooling in air. The reached temperature will be higher than when annealing to help promote uniform grain size throughout the part when cooled. Normalising aims to combat casting, forging and rolling, which causes stress on the steel?

    Stress Relieving

Stress-relieving is often performed as a heat treatment technique when the product requires reduced internal stress. The temperature should be raised below the critical temperature and then cooled uniformly. Typically, stress-relieving will only be performed on products that have become stressed by the welding process, such as boiler tanks and pressure vessels.

    Heat Treatment Of Steel

It’s common for multiple heat treatment techniques to be used when changing the properties of the steel. Therefore, in industries such as automotive and aerospace, steel may undergo five or more of the different techniques mentioned above.

    US Senate Approves Infrastructure Bill

The US Senate has voted 69-30 to approve US President Mr Joe Biden’s USD 1 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act after more than a week of debate for modernization of roads and highways, upgrade electric transmission and harden infrastructure from extreme weather etc. The infrastructure bill now will advance to the US House of Representatives. American Iron and Steel Institute President & CEO Mr Kevin Dempsey said “We applaud the Senate for advancing this bipartisan legislation that will spur economic growth and job creation throughout the country. Passage of this bill today gets us one step closer to making long overdue investments in our nation’s roads, bridges, transit systems and other essential infrastructure using American-made steel. We look forward to working with the House of Representatives to get this bill to the President’s desk as soon as possible.”

    The proposed investments include

Roads, Bridges, and Major Projects - One in five miles, or 173,000 total miles, of highways and major roads and 45,000 bridges are in poor condition & bridges in poor condition. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will invest USD 110 billion of new funds for roads, bridges, and major projects, and reauthorize the surface transportation program for the next five years building on bipartisan surface transportation reauthorization bills passed out of committee earlier this year. This investment will repair and rebuild roads

Safety - America has one of the highest road fatality rates in the industrialized world. The deal invests USD 11 billion in transportation safety programs, including a new Safe Streets for All program to help states and localities reduce crashes and fatalities in their communities, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.

Public Transit - America’s transit infrastructure is inadequate with a multibillion-dollar repair backlog, representing more than 24,000 buses, 5,000 rail cars, 200 stations, and thousands of miles of track, signals, and power systems in need of replacement. The deal invests USD 39 billion of new investment to modernize transit, and improve accessibility for the elderly and people with disabilities, in addition to continuing the existing transit programs for five years as part of surface transportation reauthorization.

Passenger and Freight Rail - Unlike highways and transit, rail lacks a multi-year funding stream to address deferred maintenance, enhance existing corridors, and build new lines in high-potential locations. The deal positions Amtrak and rail to play a central role in our transportation and economic future. The deal invests USD 66 billion in rail to eliminate the Amtrak maintenance backlog, modernize the Northeast Corridor, and bring world-class rail service to areas outside the northeast and mid-Atlantic.

EV Infrastructure - US market share of plug-in electric vehicle sales is only one-third the size of the Chinese EV market. The President believes that must change. The bill invests USD 7.5 billion to build out a national network of EV chargers.

Electric Buses - American school buses play a critical role in expanding access to education, but they are also a significant source of pollution. The deal will deliver thousands of electric school buses nationwide, including in rural communities, helping school districts across the country buy clean, American-made, zero emission buses, and replace the yellow school bus fleet for America’s children. The deal invests USD 2.5 billion in zero emission buses, USD 2.5 billion in low emission buses, and USD 2.5 billion for ferries.

Reconnecting Communities - Too often, past transportation investments divided communities, like the Claiborne Expressway in New Orleans or I-81 in Syracuse, or it left out the people most in need of affordable transportation options. In particular, significant portions of the interstate highway system were built through Black neighbourhoods. The program will fund planning, design, demolition, and reconstruction of street grids, parks, or other infrastructure through $1 billion of dedicated funding.

Airports, Ports, and Waterways - The United States built modern aviation, but airports lag far behind competitors. The bill invests USD 17 billion in port infrastructure and USD 25 billion in airports to address repair and maintenance backlogs, reduce congestion and emissions near ports and airports, and drive electrification and other low-carbon technologies.

Resilience and Western Water Infrastructure - Millions of Americans feel the effects of climate change each year when their roads wash out, airport power goes down, or schools get flooded. The deal with an investment of over USD 50 billion includes funds to protect against droughts and floods, in addition to a major investment in weatherization.

Clean Drinking Water - Currently, up to 10 million American households and 400,000 schools and child care centers lack safe drinking water. The deal’s USD 55 billion investment represents the largest investment in clean drinking water in American history, including dedicated funding to replace lead service lines and the dangerous chemical PFAS

High-Speed Internet - Broadband internet is necessary for Americans to do their jobs, to participate equally in school learning, health care, and to stay connected. The deal’s USD 65 billion investment ensures every American has access to reliable high-speed internet with an historic investment in broadband infrastructure deployment, just as the federal government made a historic effort to provide electricity to every American nearly one hundred years ago.

Environmental Remediation - In thousands of rural and urban communities around the country, hundreds of thousands of former industrial and energy sites are now idle. The deal invests USD 21 billion in environmental remediation, making the largest investment in addressing the legacy pollution that harms the public health of communities and neighbourhoods in American history

Power Infrastructure - As the recent Texas power outages demonstrated, aging electric grid needs urgent modernization. The deal’s USD 73 billion investments is the single largest investment in clean energy transmission in American history. It upgrades our power infrastructure, including by building thousands of miles of new, resilient transmission lines to facilitate the expansion of renewable energy.

Thyssenkrupp Continues Positive Trend in 3rd Quarter

In the 3rd quarter of the current 2020/2021 fiscal year, thyssenkrupp continued its good performance of previous quarters and achieved a significant improvement on both the previous quarter and the prior-year figures, which were severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The group of companies recorded a 3rd-quarter order intake of EUR 8.8 billion, almost double the figure for the prior-year period. Between April and June, sales increased by 51 percent to EUR 8.7 billion. Adjusted EBIT amounted to EUR 266 million, up significantly from the prior-year figure of minus EUR 693 million and also from the prior quarter EUR 220 million. Almost all segments contributed to this positive performance with their earnings improvements. In particular, Materials Services posted record earnings. For the full year 2020/2021 thyssenkrupp has confirmed the earnings forecast raised recently with the half-year figures.

thyssenkrupp AG CEO Ms Martina Merz said “We are on track with our transformation of thyssenkrupp. The environment remains very challenging but we are delivering on those aspects that are in our control. The figures show that our numerous restructurings and performance measures are taking effect. With the sale of our mining business and the Infrastructure business unit, we have also achieved major milestones in focusing our portfolio. This will quickly have a positive effect. Nevertheless, our ‘Performance first’ principle remains our top priority. In other words, we’re on the right course and we’re progressing well. But we’re doing even more and not letting up.”
