    Published on :
    16 Feb, 2022, 4:35 am

Russian pipe maker United Metallurgical Company has developed production of large-diameter pipes with an innovative two-layer epoxy coating for anti-corrosion protection of underground main pipelines. Products were manufactured by order of Transneft at the Vyksa OMK plant in the Nizhny Novgorod Region in Russia. The pipes have already been delivered to the customer's facility for construction and installation work and further testing at the pilot section of the Kuibyshev-Unecha-Mozyr-1 oil pipeline.

The technology for applying an innovative coating to pipes at the OMK plant was developed and mastered by specialists from the OMK Engineering and Technology Center in Vyksa together with the Transneft Research Institute. The new coating is planned to be used as an alternative to three-layer polyethylene insulation. Conducted laboratory studies have confirmed the reliability of epoxy coatings and their advantages over polyethylene ones. In particular, they are more resistant to UV radiation and high temperatures of up to 80 degree Celsius. In addition, the production of raw materials for epoxy powder coatings is localized in Russia, due to which the cost of the final product may be more profitable compared to pipes with polyethylene insulation.

HKM Grants FAC for 2 Ladle Treatment Stands to Primetals

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    16 Feb, 2022, 4:44 am

German steel producer Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH has granted Primetals Technologies final acceptance for two new ladle-treatment stands. The plants were built at the BOF steel plant at the Duisburg-Huckingen site. The heating stands are designed for 5.2 million tonnes of liquid steel per year in fully automated operation and are therefore well prepared for further digitalization. The use of copper-clad lids increases service life and ensures the quality of the produced steel. LiquiRob systems manage tasks such as temperature measurement and sampling which were carried out manually in the past, thus increasing operational safety. The installation of the new ladle-treatment stands reduces operating costs in the steel plant. In addition, the phosphorus content of the melts can be reduced and higher alloying percentages are now a possibility.

Primetals Technologies designed, supplied, and installed two 285-tonne ladle-treatment stands for the BOF steel plant. The plants are designed as electric arc treatment and will be able to handle all melts produced in the two converters without exception. The resulting capacity of 5.2 million tonnes per year requires very high availability of the ladle treatment stands. This is reached thanks to high-quality copper-clad lids and a high-performance high-current system. Energy is supplied by the steel operations own power plant, which converts the blast-furnace top gas and coke gas into electricity. Both heating stands are equipped with a fully automatic temperature and sampling manipulator (LiquiRob). The purging gas systems are coupled automatically.

The main tasks of the ladle-treatment stands are as follows: reducing refractory consumption of the converters by lowering tapping temperature by up to 50°C; reducing phosphorus content in the steel; producing melts that necessitate a higher degree of alloying; increasing the optional use of pig iron or scrap in steelmaking; optimizing the use of lime; and reducing the amount of slag. The furnace transformers for the electrical supply of the treatment stands as well as the electrical, automation, and control systems are also within the scope of supply. The arrangement of the ladle-treatment stands directly in the production line behind the converters and the extremely limited space available in this area of the steel plant required a complex layout with special portal design. Primetals Technologies was responsible not only for the process equipment but also for installation and commissioning.

Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH operates an integrated steel mill at its Duisburg Huckingen site. The steel mill is divided into the port, sinter plant, coke plant, blast furnace plant with two blast furnaces, and LD converter steel mill with two converters. In addition, VD plants and two round continuous casters and three slab casters are used in the steelmaking plant. HKM produces over 1.800 different steel grades. With a production capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per year of slab and round bars.

Bradken Director Fudged Steel Test Reports for Navy Submarines

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    16 Feb, 2022, 4:50 am

US Department of Justice announced that the former Director of Metallurgy at Bradken Inc Ms Elaine Thomas is sentenced in US District Court in Tacoma to 30 months in prison, and a USD 50,000 fine, for falsifying test results that measure the strength and toughness of steel that Bradken sold for installation in US Navy submarines. US Attorney Mr Nick Brown said “For 32 years, Elaine Thomas betrayed the trust of the United States Navy, knowingly placing its sailors and military operations at risk. She falsely stated that steel Bradken produced met critical specifications– standards developed to keep our military personnel safe– and allowed inferior steel to go to Navy subs in half the orders she reviewed.”

Ms Elaine Thomas, 67, of Auburn in Washington pleaded guilty on 8 November 2021, to major fraud against the United States. Ms Elaine Thomas, as Director of Metallurgy, falsified test results to hide the fact that the steel had failed the tests. Thomas falsified results for over 240 productions of steel, which represents about half the castings Bradken produced for the Navy.

According to records filed in the case, Bradken is the US Navy’s leading supplier of high-yield steel castings for naval submarines. Bradken’s Tacoma foundry produces castings that prime contractors use to fabricate submarine hulls. The Navy requires that the steel meets certain standards for strength and toughness to ensure that it does not fail under certain circumstances, such as a collision. For 30 years, the Tacoma foundry, which was previously known as Atlas, and acquired by Bradken in 2008, produced castings, many of which had failed lab tests and did not meet the Navy’s standards.

Court filings indicate there is no evidence that Bradken’s management was aware of the fraud until May 2017 when a lab employee discovered that test cards had been altered and that other discrepancies existed in Bradken’s records. In April 2020, Bradken entered into a deferred prosecution agreement, accepting responsibility for the offense and agreeing to take remedial measures. Bradken also entered into a civil settlement, paying USD 10.896 million to resolve allegations that the foundry produced and sold substandard steel components for installation on US Navy submarines.

The Navy has taken extensive steps to ensure the safe operation of 30 affected submarines. Those measures will result in increased costs and maintenance as some of the substandard parts is monitored. To date, the Navy says it has spent nearly USD 14 million including 50,000 hours of engineering work to assess the parts and risk to the submarines.

ArcelorMittal Hamilton Decarbonization Project Confirmed with Aid

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    16 Feb, 2022, 5:26 am

ArcelorMittal has confirmed with the Government of Ontario its plan for CAD 1.8 billion investment in decarbonization technologies at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s plant in Hamilton in Canada. As announced in July, 2021, the investment will reduce annual CO2?emissions at ArcelorMittal’s Hamilton operations by approximately 3 million tonnes, which represents approximately 60% of emissions. This means the Hamilton plant will transition away from the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace steelmaking production route to the Direct Reduced Iron Electric Arc Furnace production route, which carries a significantly lower carbon footprint. The new manufacturing processes contribute to a considerable reduction of CO2?emissions and deliver other positive environmental impacts including the elimination of emissions and flaring from coke making and iron making operations. The project is scheduled to be complete by 2028, although the Company is looking for opportunities to accelerate the project timelines.

The investment was contingent on support from the governments of Canada and Ontario. In July 2021 the Government of Canada announced it will invest CAD 400 million in the project and today, the Government of Ontario announced it will invest CAD 500 million in the project. This secures project funding and firms up the investment.

At the heart of the plan are a 2.5 million tonne capacity DRI facility and an EAF facility capable of producing 2.4 million tonnes of high-quality steel through its existing secondary metallurgy and secondary casting facilities. Modification of the existing EAF facility and continuous casters will also be undertaken to align productivity, quality and energy capabilities between all assets in the new footprint.

H2Stahl Project to Start at Duisburg Site of thyssenkrupp Steel

The energy transition that has been granted funding in the amount of EUR 37 million by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action will be implemented by launching the H2Stahl project in Duisburg, the consortium member thyssenkrupp Steel, Air Liquide Deutschland & project coordination VDEh Betriebsforschungsinstitut BFI have now set the course for the first steps. The tasks at hand are the expansion of the use of hydrogen to the entire blast furnace 9, including the construction of a pipeline for testing the large-scale industrial use of hydrogen in steelmaking, as well as the construction and trial operation of a direct reduction pilot plant which will mark the technological leap to hydrogen-based climate-neutral hot metal production. The entire cost of the project to be implemented within a five-year period amounts to a high double-digit million figure.

On November 11, 2019, thyssenkrupp Steel was the first company globally to inject hydrogen into a blast furnace during operation. Hydrogen replaces pulverized coal as additional reducing agent. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions for unlike carbon, hydrogen does not react in the blast furnace to form CO2, but water. The first series of tests funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia performed on one tuyere of blast furnace 9 in Duisburg was successfully completed. The focus of the project was in particular to gain knowledge about the plant technology when using hydrogen.

Within the scope of the real-world laboratory H2Stahl funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the use of hydrogen will now be expanded to all 28 tuyeres of the blast furnace. The objective of the research is – amongst others – investigating the influence of the industrial use of hydrogen on the metallurgical processes in the blast furnace and determining parameters for the efficient use of reducing agents. The overall aim is to establish the use of hydrogen as bridging technology for the technical CO2 reduction in existing blast furnaces. Provided that sufficient quantities of green hydrogen are available, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 20 percent on one plant. The funding is based on the conviction that on the road to the transformation of the energy system the large-scale industrial use of hydrogen will help make the German steel industry not only climate-friendly, but also competitive in the future.

Along with the expansion of the use of hydrogen to all 28 tuyeres of blast furnace 9, the internal infrastructure of the plant will be prepared for the large-scale industrial supply with hydrogen. This includes also the link to the existing hydrogen infrastructure of Air Liquide. To secure the continuous hydrogen supply of the blast furnace, the project partner Air Liquide will build an about six kilometers long pipeline linking the steel plant in Duisburg with Air Liquide’s production network. Gilles Le Van, Vice-President Large Industries and Energy Transition Air Liquide Central Europe: “By using hydrogen at Europe's largest steel site in Duisburg, thyssenkrupp and Air Liquide are advancing the decarbonization of steel production. It is a great pleasure for Air Liquide to contribute its know-how thus helping to reconcile effective climate protection and international competitiveness in steel production”.

As part of the H2Stahl project, a direct reduction pilot plant will also be built in order to prepare the technology changeover from the conventional blast furnace route to the hydrogen-based direct reduction process. The use of hydrogen-containing process gases in combination with natural gas and pure hydrogen is to be tested in the new plant to be designed, which will be operated and scientifically supervised by BFI. Aside from the commonly used feedstock for direct reduction plants, other materials containing iron oxide, including potentially suitable waste materials, will be used. The direct reduction pilot plant will be equipped with additional measurement equipment enabling scientific evaluation. The tests in the direct reduction pilot plant will be accompanied by modeling and special studies in the Technical Center of BFI. The planned research work will focus on the investigation into the reduction processes and process parameters in order to ensure the smooth transition to the future large-scale plants.

US Energy Department is taking steps to distribute billions of dollars from last year's USD 1 trillion infrastructure law to support hydrogen production and reduce carbon emissions related to heavy industry. The US Energy Department has launched a public input process to guide how it should spend up to USD 9.5 billion the 2021 infrastructure law set aside for funding clean hydrogen projects over the next five fiscal years. The US Transportation Department is separately working on an effort to encourage federal transportation projects to make use of low-carbon concrete, asphalt and other construction materials.

The hydrogen funding in the infrastructure law consists of USD 8 billion to support the building of regional hubs for hydrogen, USD 1 billion for cost-efficiency improvements in making hydrogen with electricity and USD 500 million for manufacturing and reuse of hydrogen equipment components. The infrastructure law seeks to support clean hydrogen, such as hydrogen produced from renewable power or that can capture carbon emissions. The Energy Department has released requests for information that it will use to guide its funding.

The low-carbon construction effort is managed by the Transportation Department, which is starting a pilot project to use low-carbon materials in federal transportation projects. The General Services Administration is also seeking information on low-carbon concrete and asphalt that it will use for port projects funded under the infrastructure law.

Emissions from the US heavy industrial sector must be reduced to protect communities and help meet the Biden administration’s goal of cutting carbon pollution nationwide from all key sources 50-52% by 2030. The injection of billions of dollars in funding will encourage the innovations needed to cut emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like steel production and cement. US industry is the third largest source of US greenhouse gas emissions with 23% of emissions in 2019.
