Study Unveils Potential of Wave Energy for Decarbonizing Steel

New research conducted by CorPower Ocean, Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa, and a global green steel manufacturer has suggested that wave energy could play a significant role in decarbonizing the steel manufacturing industry. The study, which assessed wave energy's potential for decarbonizing the steel industry, highlighted how wave energy could positively impact the creation of green hydrogen to make green steel.

Green steel is created using green hydrogen, which is currently the only solution to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, and the chemical industry. However, its production requires electrolyzer to split water into oxygen and hydrogen using renewable energy. The study focused on the running requirements of a 1GW electrolyzer at a potential European green steel production facility for 90% of the year.

The study concluded that combining complementary renewable energy sources such as land-based wind and solar with ocean-based wave power led to a more stable and consistent power source to create green hydrogen. This meant significant reductions could be achieved in installed capacity required and cost of energy. When only using solar and wind energy, the need to cover 90% demand resulted in an energy system of 8.4GW. By comparison, when adding 1GW of wave energy into the mix, the installed capacity required was reduced by 46% to 4.5GW.

The findings show that introducing wave energy can help to half the requirement of installed capacity production and lower the cost of energy by 26%. In Europe alone, the annual steel energy demand sits at 300TWh per year, and producing the necessary amounts of hydrogen for a full decarbonization of the steel industry would require an increase in electricity production of the order of 20%.

Mr. Anders Jansson, Head of Business Development at CorPower Ocean, said that “The report proves once again how important wave energy is for future energy systems. Even though this was focused on a 1GW system, we see the same results from national and interconnected energy systems.’

CFHI Orders 1600mm Dai Bloom Caster from Danieli

China First Heavy Industries has chosen a new, technologically advanced Danieli semi-continuous vertical caster to be installed in the Fulaerji manufacturing base in Qiqiha’er city, Heilongjiang, China. The caster will be used to produce 1350mm and 1600mm dia rounds for special steel grades, for forging applications. The process will make use of water-cooled copper moulds, hydraulic oscillating tables, Danieli Rotelec Electro-Magnetic Stirrers (EMS) and induction heating systems.

The new Danieli casting technology and equipment will enable CFHI to produce jumbo blooms with a high-quality internal structure, high internal soundness, and excellent surface quality at higher productivity and safety compared to the conventional ingot casting route, with its dirty, wide working areas and dangerous operating procedures. The process does not require in-line oxy-cutting, with blooms standing in a vertical position until complete solidification. Blooms can have variable lengths up to 12.5m, with weights ranging from 100 to 180 metric tons, depending on the steel tapped in the ladle.

The use of the movable dynamic EMS system along the bloom length during solidification, which is not possible with conventional ingot routes due to the use of cast-iron molds, and induction heating on the bloom tail at the casting end, will reduce the shrinkage cavity, optimizing bloom yield.

CFHI is a state-owned, Chinese high-tech enterprise with full-coverage manufacturing capacity for nuclear power equipment and the largest supplier of hydrogenation reacto?for oil refining globally. CFHI produces the high-quality steel required by many demanding applications. The plant is scheduled to start production by the end of 2023.

In 2022, Danieli successfully commissioned two continuous-casting machines in China, at Jiangsu Yonggang and Chengde Jianlong Special Steel, for continuously cast blooms up to 1200mm dia.

In 2021, ArcelorMittal Europe announced plans to convert ArcelorMittal Poland’s flagship Dabrowa Gornicza works from a blast furnace-based operation to a direct reduction-electric arc furnace route.

Apart from upgrading the cogeneration plant, ArcelorMittal Poland is also beginning the reconstruction of the coke-oven gas equalization tank to stabilize the fuel gas pressure in the coking plant. The new tank will replace the existing twin facility, which requires renovation.

In December 2022, ArcelorMittal Poland contracted a consortium to maintain its slag granulation units and coke plant boiler and gas tank. Repair work on the K3-ECII boiler at Zdzieszowice is scheduled for completion by January 2025, while gas tank no 3 at the coke plant is slated for repair by December 2025.

UK Steel Welcomes Government CBAM Consultations

UK Steel, the trade association representing the steel industry in the UK, has welcomed the launch of consultations by the UK government on a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and other measures to mitigate the risk of carbon leakage. The consultation, open to all interested parties in the UK and internationally, will take place from 30 March to 22 June.

UK Steel has called for a level playing field where imported and domestically produced steel face similar carbon costs, and a CBAM can deliver just that. The association has warned that without similar measures, UK steel producers will be outcompeted by high-emission, imported steel, putting the UK's transition to green steel production at risk. Europe is currently implementing its own CBAM, and the UK risks a damaging trade barrier with its biggest trade partner if it does not develop and implement similar measures quickly.

CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) is a proposed policy measure that would impose a carbon tax on imported goods based on their carbon footprint. The goal of CBAM is to ensure that domestic industries are not at a competitive disadvantage compared to foreign competitors who may not be subject to the same emissions regulations.

The UK has indicated its intention to introduce a CBAM policy, as part of its efforts to reach its target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The specifics of the policy have not been finalized, but it is expected to be introduced in phases, starting with a pilot phase in 2023. The UK's CBAM policy is likely to be similar to the one proposed by the European Union, which would require importers to purchase carbon credits in order to offset the emissions associated with the production of imported goods.
