   BaoSteel Using Robots to Increase Operational Efficiency & Safety

   Industrial robots are playing a big role at Chinese steel giant Baowu’s BaoSteel plant in Shanghai. Baosteel started using BAO Robots in various duties in 2019 and recent media reports suggest that so far 920 robots have freed up more than 2,800 workers from repetitive and heavy chores and many production lines have achieved unmanned operations.
   
   Baosteel indicated that the operation of robots could make its staff avoid a harsh, high labor intensity, and risky work environment. Instead, they can pay more attention to high-adding-value products and services to increase labor efficiency.

   Danieli to Modernize Optimus Steel Rolling Mill in Texas

   Since the acquisition of the minimill in Orange County in Texas in US, Optimus Steel has selected Danieli for a complete rolling process modernization plan, to improve competitiveness and product quality, and to operate with high production flexibility. The project covers different technology areas and is being carried out in steps. A first modernization step, related to the two-strand wirerod mill, has already been implemented. Two new HSS High-Speed Shears for automatic bar cropping have been installed between the wirerod finishing blocks and the new Danieli oil-film bearing laying heads, equipped with patented double-pipe rotor technology to perform consistently at finishing speeds up to 115 meters pe second. A new, Sund Birsta, all-inclusive coil-finishing end completes the wirerod mill modernization.
   
   The installation of a new 140 tons per hour high speed bar finishing line is in progress and it will be completed by 2023. Supplied with two Danieli HTC High-speed double Twin-Channel systems and automatic bar counting, it will enable Optimus Steel to produce 9.5 to 36-mm dia, high quality rebar #3 to #11 at a stable working speed of 45 meters per second.
   
   Recently, to complete its modernization vision plan, Optimus Steel has approved an investment for a new re heating furnace and a new twin rolling mill. The new, 140-tph Danieli Centro Combustion low-scale, low-NOx, energy-saving walking-beam furnace will feed two independent rolling lines, which in turn will feed either the two-strand wirerod line for special steel or the HTC bar line. The new mill will operate energy-saving, cantilever-roll stands to minimize installation and production costs, maintenance time and personnel, by fully applying the 4.0 concept, which also improves operator and operational safety. To be installed at the entry side of the two new rolling lines, an energy-efficient Q-Heat induction heater will improve material quality, especially on the wirerod products, by controlling scale formation.
   
   The automation control for the entire process will be guaranteed by Danieli Automation systems.
   
   The upgrade of the existing water-treatment plant serving the minimill, along with the supply of a new one to guarantee higher environmental standards and comply with local requirements, is part of the contracted package.
   
   Full rolling mill modernization is expected to be completed by beginning of 2024.

   European Steel Association EUROFER in latest Economic & Steel Market Outlook said that “In the fourth quarter of 2021 output in the electrical domestic appliances sector dropped by 2.8% for the second time in a row. However, despite the drop experienced over the last two quarters, the sector still records high output volumes in historical terms. On an annual basis, after 2020 moderate fall of 2.1% compared to other EU steel-using sectors, output rebounded by 6.7% in 2021, thanks to very positive performances recorded over the first half of the year.”
   
   EUROFER said “Growth is expected to record negative growth over the first half of 2022 as a result of the already mentioned supply chain disruptions and effects of the war in Ukraine. On the other hand, some supportive factors will provide positive contribution to growth: working from home will remain widespread in the EU over the next two years, albeit to a lower extent than during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the longer term, developments linked to Internet of Things ie smart applications that enable to connect home appliances, devices, etc should also benefit the sector, but the impact of these applications is not likely to be visible before 2023. Output in domestic appliances is set to drop in 2022 by 3.3% and to marginally recover by 2% in 2023.”

   Vietnamese steel giant Hoa Phat Hoa Phat Group has produced 4.3 million tonnes of crude steel in January-June 2022, an increase of 8% YoY, while consumption of construction steel, billet and HRC reached almost 4 million tonnes, up 6% YoY
   
   Construction Steel Production - 2.38 million tonnes, up 29% YoY
   
   HRC sales - 1.4 million tonnes, up 7% YoY
   
   Steel Pipes – 0.377 million tonnes
   
   Galvanized Sheets – 0.180 million tonnes
   
   Construction steel consumption experienced rapid growth thanks to the high demanding market in the southern region and exports, followed by 200% and 60% respectively, over the same period in 2021. Due to the Government push, the progress of public investment projects, especially the key infrastructure projects including the North-South highway, has improved the consumption in the construction materials market compared to the previous year.
   
   In the second quarter, despite many complicated situations in the world raw material market due to the Russia-Ukraine tension conflict, Hoa Phat Group still maintained stable production, ensuring a sufficient supply of goods both domestically and overseas.

   Tenaris to Acquire Benteler Steel & Tube Pipe Plant in Louisiana

   Leading seamless steel pipe maker Tenaris has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire from Benteler North America Corporation 100% of the shares of Benteler Steel & Tube Manufacturing Corporation for an aggregate price of USD 460 million, on a cash free, debt free basis. The acquisition will include USD 52 million of working capital. Benteler Steel & Tube Manufacturing Corporation is a US producer of seamless steel pipe, with an annual pipe rolling capacity of up to 400,000 tonnes at its production facility located in Shreveport in Louisiana. The acquisition would further expand Tenaris’s production range and local manufacturing presence in the US market.
   
   The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, including approval by the US antitrust authorities, consent by Louisiana Economic Development and other local entities, and other customary conditions. Closing is expected to occur during the fourth quarter of 2022.
   
   Tenaris is a leading global supplier of steel tubes and related services for the world’s energy industry and certain other industrial applications.

   The duty probe was initiated in January 2021 after a complaint filed by the Turkish Steel Producers’ Association, claiming that Turkey's local industry has been materially injured by the given imports. After the investigation, which was launched in early 2021, the ministry's preliminary decision released 11 March determined rates of 14.08%-49.84%.
   
   The investigation report with the final determinations would be submitted to the Board of Evaluation of Unfair Competition after receiving opinions and claims from relevant parties for a final decision, the ministry said at that time.

   Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia has taken charge as Union Steel Minister in addition to his existing portfolio of Minister of Civil Aviation at Udyog Bhawan. Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Mr Sanjay Singh welcomed the Minister at the Steel Ministry. After taking the charge of newly assigned Steel Ministry, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed his commitment to fulfil the trust and expectations of the Prime Minister and the country. The Minister said that it is well known that the steel sector plays a vital role in nation-building. The aim is to take the sector to its highest potential, so that it becomes a strong engine of growth in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
   
   Mr Scindia represents Madhya Pradesh as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha and is Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Steel. He has also been a five-term Member of Parliament which includes four terms in the Lok Sabha (2002-04, 2004-09, 2009-14 & 2014-19). Mr Scindia began his journey in public service in 2002. In 2008 he served as the Minister of State of Tele Communications, Posts & IT; in 2009 as Minister of State Commerce & Industry and then, in 2012 as Minister of Power (Independent Charge).
   
   Mr Scindia holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University, USA and an MBA degree from the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, USA.

   Chinese steel giant Baosteel has recently released 2021 Climate Action Report. It is the first climate report by a Chinese steel enterprise, which gives an in-depth and detailed description of Baosteel’s mid & long term goals and action path for carbon neutralization. It demonstrates Baosteel’s comprehensive green and low-carbon product layout. The report shows that Baosteel has been vigorously promoting green steel manufacturing and focuses on six major aspects

   In 2020, Baosteel invested in the conversion of a 430 cubic meters conventional blast furnace into a hydrogen rich carbon cycle blast furnace, conducted the second-stage test in 2021 and is currently under construction for the third-stage test.

    Turkish imported scrap bounces back to over $400

    Turkish imported scrap prices are continuing to increase on fresh deals.
    
    Following bookings on Wednesday for Denmark-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 at $395/tonne cfr Turkey and at $415/t cfr for shredded, and for EU-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 at $394/t cfr, a southern Turkish mill bought EU-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 on Thursday at $406/t cfr for first-half-of-August shipment.
    
    Suppliers had been offering above $400/t cfr this week but Turkish mills had resisted until now. Scrap prices have now however officially exceeded the $400/t threshold as a result of the fresh EU deal, Kallanish notes.
    
    Baltic and US suppliers are seen targeting to sell premium HMS 1&2 80:20 at above $415-420/t, meanwhile.
    
    Kallanish daily scrap assessment for premium HMS 1&2 80:20 rose sharply to $410/t cfr Turkey on Thursday from $395/t a day earlier.

    Afrochine Expands Ferrochrome Production in Zimbabwe

    The Herald reported that Zimbabwe’s ferrochrome producer Afrochine Smelting has ramped up its operations by opening two more furnaces at their plant in Chegutu. The two additional furnaces and a pelletiser machine at Afrochine have seen the company double its workforce to 950 from 550 mostly drawn from the Chegutu district while 750 tonnes of ferrochrome is now being produced daily.
    
    Afrochine’s expansion comes at a time its sister company, Dinson Iron and Steel Company is working to open its Manhize Steel Plant near Mvuma. Both Dinson Iron and Afrochine are subsidiaries of Chinese steel producer, Tshingshan Holdings Group.

    HBIS Serbia to Idle One Blast Furnace – Report

    Argus reported that Chinese owned Serbian steel maker HBIS Serbia is preparing to idle 900,000 tonnes per year blast furnace at its Smederevo plant as it adjusts to the market environment and will restart it when conditions allow.
    
    The Smederevo plant can produce around 2.2 million tonnes per year of crude steel via its two furnaces but will be reducing this to a little over 1 million tonnes per year.
    
    Alongside weak demand, rising gas costs are also impacting producers. The report added that “ArcelorMittal has idled a unit at Dunkirk, and has put staff on to short-time work at Bremen, although no units have been idled.
    
    Natural gas prices are approaching EUR 180 per MWh, up from EUR 81.5 per MWh in mid June.

    NCLT Orders Kalisma Steel Liquidator to Admit TVS Motor’s Claim

    Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal ruled that shares supplied by the promoter in an official capacity as security for a loan makes the lender a secured creditor in a petition filed by two wheeler maker TVS Motors against the liquidator of Mumbai-based Kalisma Steel Ltd and directed the liquidator to consider the claim. NCLT bench said “The submission of the respondent liquidator that the promoter pledged the shares in its personal capacity is not justified.”
    
    At the time of rejection, the liquidator also argued that the claim was belated. It argued that the bankrupt company’s promoter had informed it about financial difficulties and would be able to continue its supply as a vendor only if the auto major can support it by giving an advance of INR 2 crore.
    
    TVS had extended the said financial assistance at the agreed rate of annual 12% interest. Kalisma Steel agreed to repay the money in five trenches. Also, the promoters of Kalisma Steel had provided shares of INR 2 crore as the security deposit. TVS Motors argued in the tribunal that at no time had the vendor denied its liability to pay back the debt amount received from the company. Also, the corporate debtor in its email had acknowledged the loan liability to pay back the debt in installments proving the automaker had advanced a loan amount to be paid back with interest.
    
    Thane based Kalisma Steel was manufacturing fasteners, bolts, screws, nuts, threaded rods, washers, and structural steel products for automobile, aerospace, marine, and infrastructure industries in India.

    European merchant bars leader AFV Beltrame Group has chosen GF-ELTI, a company specialized in the production of Industrial Furnaces and Heat Treatment Services, for the supply of two new heating plants for its rolling mills.     The first, destined for the LME subsidiary, consists of a Walking Beam Furnace, bilateral heating type, 13 pairs of GF-ELTI Regenerative Burners of 4.0 MW each, digital ON-OFF control, with productivity equals to 90 tonnes per hour.
    
    The second, destined for the SG subsidiary, consists of a Pusher Furnace with bilateral heating type, 23 pairs of GF-ELTI Regenerative Burners of 3.2 MW each, digital ON-OFF control, capable to reach a 124 tonnes per hour production.
    
    The agreement between the Companies foresees the start-up of both plants at the beginning of 2023 and the assignment includes the design, prefabrication and commissioning of the two furnaces for blooms heating.
    
    In addition to the benefit given by the efficient regenerative heating technology, the new furnaces will have the possibility of using hydrogen thanks to the experience gained by GF-ELTI with the innovative project H2BURN High Efficiency Burners fuelled with hydro-methane blend.
    
    Operating in the steel sector for over a century, the AFV Beltrame Group manufactures rolled sections for construction, shipbuilding and excavation.
    
    The company Elettrotermica Industriale was founded in Sovere BG in 1976, with the acronym ELTI, inheriting the legacy of Ditta Fratus. General Forni was also established in 1976 as a company dedicated to the production of Industrial Furnaces for rolling mills. In 2017 ELTI and General Forni merged into a single company GF-ELTI. The aim was to create a single reference point and a reliable partner in the steel market, capable of providing Turnkey Equipment and Heat Treatment Services.     Steel Workers Union Local 2724 Votes for Strike at Algoma Steel

    After members of Canadian steel maker Algoma Steel's largest union United Steelworkers Local 2251 approved a strike mandate and appointed an Algoma Steel strike committee comprised of Mr Steve Johnson, Mr Jordan Ambeault, Mr Frank Bruni, Mr Adam Burns and Mr Mike Strachan, United Steelworkers Local 2724 voted to authorize a strike if needed with 95% voting in favor. The current contract expires 31 July.
    
    USW Local 2251’s negotiating committee is made up of Mr Mike Da Prat, Mr Mark Molinaro, Mr Bob Roussain, Mr Marino DeGregorio, Mr Luca Robibaro and Ms Janice Merrick. The current collective agreement expires on 31 July 2022.
    
    United Steelworkers Local 2251 representing more than 2,000 hourly workers while USW Local 2724 represents 500 salaried members and retirees
    
    Algoma has a steelmaking capacity of 2.8 million tonnes per year of hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil and plate products.

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Warns Over Increase in Railway Tariffs

    Interfax Ukraine reported that ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has warned Ukraine's government about the threat of a shutdown due to a 70% increase in railway tariffs. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih in a 5 July letter to Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Ms Yulia Svyrydenko said that due to the increase in railway tariffs by 70%, the functioning of the enterprise was under threat. The letter said “We had to make a number of difficult decisions in order to balance the issue of the physical safety of workers and our desire to increase export volumes, which provide foreign exchange earnings to the economy and the survival of our enterprise. Due to the decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure to increase railway tariffs from 1 July 2022 as well as the continued blocking of Black Sea ports logistics costs have increased by 400%. At the same time, prices for metal products on world markets fell by more than USD 300 per tonne and for iron ore concentrate by more than USD 40 per tonne.”
    
    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih wrote “We see this increase in railway tariffs as a significant threat to the operation of our enterprise, our ability to function, provide jobs and replenish state and local budgets.”
    
    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih administration is urging the government to find a balanced solution.
    
    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, after the commissioning of blast furnace No 6, converter and rolling shops in April-June of this year, began to export steel and unprecedented volumes of iron ore concentrate. As a result, about 650,000 tonnes of products were sold in June, including 200,000 tonnes of metal products and 450,000 tonnes of iron ore concentrate.
    
    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is the largest producer of rolled steel in Ukraine. It specializes in production of long products, in particular rebar and wire rod.

    Former PM & Kobe Steel Employee Mr Shinzo Abe Assassinated

    Japan’s longest serving former Prime Minister Mr Shinzo Abe was shot twice with a homemade gun as he delivered a campaign speech in Nara on the morning of 8 July 2022 & he succumbed to his wounds later in the day after going into cardiac arrest. Mr Abe was 67 years old and is survived by his wife Ms Akie Matsuzaki.
    
    Mr Abe attended Seikei University in Tokyo, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He then travelled to the United States and studied public policy at the University of Southern California’s School of Policy, Planning, and Development for three semesters. Returning to Japan, Mr Abe started working at Japan’s leading steel manufacturing company Kobe Steel in 1979 before resigning to pursue a political career.
    
    Kobe Steel, operating worldwide under the brand Kobelco, is a major Japanese steel manufacturer headquartered in Chuo-ku in Kobe. Kobe Steel also has a stake in Osaka Titanium Technologies. The company supplies about half of the global market of the wires used in valve springs of auto engines.
