Turkish Researcher Model Hail Impact on Steel Roofing Sheets

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    21 Nov, 2022, 5:18 am

Aydin Turkey based Adnan Menderes University’s Civil Engineering Faculty Professor Mehmet E Uz has published results of “Modeling the Impact of Hailstones on Flat Steel Roofing Membranes for Residential Buildings” in Nature.

Metal roof panels are commonly used on residential and commercial buildings. Steel panels exposed to hail have not yet been adequately tested for dent resistance. A finite element model was used to analyze the entire test setup. To compare artificial hailstones with natural hailstones, which remained intact after impact, different steel sheets were struck by different sizes of artificial hailstones at different terminal velocities. The simulation and the material properties are assessed by comparing the experimental results with the FE model. An equation to predict the dent depth based on kinetic energy and stress is also presented.

The following factors are considered in this study: sheet thickness, material thickness, batten spacing, distance of the dent center of gravity from the closest edge and hail size. For inelastic steel, the dent depth is independent of the hailstone diameter. A smaller hailstone with a larger impact produces a similar permanent dent and the same impact energy as a larger hailstone with a smaller impact. The plastic distortion noted with the proposed equation agrees well with the experimental results. The dent depth in this case is not inversely proportional to the square root of the plate thickness or to the vibration-induced yield stress.

The FE models were not able to provide accurate predictions of deformation depths shown in experiments compared to analytical models. Numerical models were able to accurately represent approximately 82% of the experimental results of permanent deformation of the plate. The elastic response of steel plates is generally overestimated by FE models. It is also necessary to conduct a separate study to accurately determine the strain sensitivity of the artificial hailstone in relation to the hardness of the hailstone, which determines the impact force at the point of contact.

Based on these findings, new design methods for hail-resistant steel sheets can be developed that have a wider range of applications. A resistance factor of 0.80 is recommended for use with the equation in order to achieve the target reliability index of 4. Relative to the current AISC specification’s equation, which has a resistance factor of 0.75 as specified in the code, the use of the proposed equation will facilitate structural design that are more economical yet reliable.

The results of this study provide a better understanding of the failure modes of hail and roof panels and their effects on dent resistance. In this study, the results of observations and numerical simulations agreed well with those of analytical models. The result is that the proposed equation overestimates the dent depths compared to the dent depths obtained with finite element models, while the equation leads to an underestimation of the dent depths found in the steel sheets.

    21 Nov, 2022, 5:23 am

Appellate tribunal NCLAT has upheld the NCLT order to allow Jindal Stainless to participate in the auction of Rathi Super Steel even after a bidder was selected. The NCLAT said “The Adjudicating Authority NCLT did not commit any error in taking note of the offer made by Respondent No 1 JSL who made an offer of initial INR 190 crore and revised offer was INR 201 crore, much higher than the one on which Appellant was declared successful bidder.”

In the e-auction, Rimjhim Ispat & Synergy Steel had emerged as the highest bidder with INR 177.50 crore offer for Rathi Super Steel as a going concern and a letter of intent was also issued to the company on July 1, 2021.

However, on October 3, 2021, JSL approached the NCLT and filed an application for consideration of its bid for acquiring Rathi Super Steel as a going concern. JSL had offered INR 190 crore payable within 90 days from acceptance of the bid. On this the Delhi-based Principal Bench of the NCLT had on September 28, 2022, directed JSL to deposit EMD of INR 50 crore within three days of the pronouncement of order. The NCLT further directed to proceed to hold another auction between successful bidder Rimjhim Ispat and the other two bidders namely Adya Oversees and Bansal Wire Industries within seven days of this order. Moreover, the insolvency tribunal had also fixed a reserve price of INR 201 crore for the auction and said if JSL fails to fulfill the pre-deposit condition then the liquidator can confirm the sale to the highest bidder Rimjhim Ispat and proceed to collect the balance amount. This was challenged by Rimjhim Ispat and Synergy Steel before the appellate tribunal, which passed an interim order adjourning the auction for 15 days.

Cutting-edge digital technology, which captures 1000 data points every 10 seconds, is giving Tata Steel UK’s technicians an uninterrupted 3D view of the material being laid into the top of its two Port Talbot blast furnaces saving costs, energy and CO2. This latest GBP 1 million investment on Blast Furnace 5 complements a similar investment last year on Blast Furnace 4. The installation of Topscan into Blast Furnace 5 is expected to be complete by end November 2022.

The Topscan system consists of a set of radars that take a full surface scan of the iron ore and metallurgical coke being laid into each furnace, every 10 seconds. Computer modelling then gives a really clear, finite view of the raw materials at the start of their journey through the furnace. Topscan is the name of the monitoring instrument; it’s made by a company named TMT.

The market-leading ‘Topscan’ technology has the potential to save the company millions of pounds every year by reducing the amount of coke required in the furnaces, and will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 50,000 tonnes annually. The technology will also play a major role in improving the furnaces’ stability and efficiency.

Blast Furnace 5 underwent a life-extension project in 2018. Blast Furnace 5 has 10.8 meters hearth diameter and 2134 cubic meter working volume. Blast Furnace 5 makes around 6000 tonnes of iron a day.

Metinvest Hopes to Get Full Compensation for Losses from Russians

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    21 Nov, 2022, 5:26 am

Ukrainian steelmaker Metinvest’s CEO Mr Yuriy Ryzhenkov in an interview at Ian King Live on Sky News in the UK shared the latest news about the current activities of the Group's enterprises and presented on the air a steel bracelet Azovstal. He said “From the first days of a full-scale invasion, both our shareholders Mr Rinat Akhmetov and Mr Vadym Novynskyi decided that the company should support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. So, in addition to using our equipment to create a line of defense, we have developed new ways to produce armored steel, which is now used in body armor. We supplied more than 150,000 bulletproof vests to the Ukrainian army and territorial defense. We have also developed new steel mobile shelters that can be used in the field to heat and protect the military from shelling. In addition, we buy and supply the army with cars, armored vehicles, thermal imagers, walkie-talkies, etc. A large amount of machinery and equipment that is needed by the defense forces of Ukraine in the field.”

He said “We have two metallurgical plants in Ukraine, one in Zaporizhia and the other in Kamianske. They are both now operational and their capacity is about 50-60% loaded. However, we are able to produce armored plates, steel shelters, etc.”

While answering to a question about activities outside Ukraine, he said “They had some difficulties at first mainly due to the fact that they relied on semi-finished products from Azovstal in their work. Since then, we have diversified the sources of supply of semi-finished products. For example, here in the UK, slabs are now supplied by British Steel, Thyssenkrupp. In Italy, it's ADI. We have found different suppliers who can provide us with the volumes we need.”

He also said “We know very little about what is happening in Mariupol now. There are still quite a few people out there, but they have little to say about what's going on in the city. As far as I understand, the power supply is unstable, there is no water, heating, the city is now a humanitarian disaster.”

While answering to question of how much steel produced at Azovstal earlier got to the UK, he said “I am sure that the products of Azovstal were seen by any British citizen. If you look at the buildings behind, then all of them are 50-60% made up of Azovstal steel, in particular the Walkie-talkie building, the Shard building, they all contain Azovstal steel. In fact, even outside the UK, quite a few people know what Azovstal is. It is a tragedy that the world learned about Azovstal after its destruction, when the plant became a fortress. There are many attractions made of Azovstal steel when it worked. For example, the gates of the Panama Canal are made of Azovstal steel, as well as a large number of cruise ships in the Mediterranean. Reliable shelter over Chernobyl is made of Azovstal steel.”

While answering to question over demanding compensation from the Russian government through international courts, Mr Ryzhenkov said “-Absolutely! We are confident that we must receive full compensation for losses from Russians and reinvest it in Ukrainian factories in order to resume their work.”

Punjab Steel Users Fret over Withdrawal of Steel Export Duty

    Published on :
    21 Nov, 2022, 5:27 am

The Tribune reported that Punjab’s industrialists using steel as raw material in their industries are upset with the Indian government for making rapid changes in its policy on the trade after 15% duty on steel exports was withdrawn on 19 November 2022

The report quoted a Nut & Bolt manufacturer Mr Samir Goyal as saying that “Frequent shift in the government’s policy forced him to shut down another unit within a month of its setting up. He procured machines worth INR 2 crore from Taiwan about seven months back. However, he managed to run it only for a month as the government changed its policy. Today, it withdrew the export duty while the import duty on iron and steel was imposed only about five months back. It seems that the government is a puppet in the hands of a few people.”

The report quoted another industrialist Mr Kulwinder Singh as saying that “The international business scenario has drastically changed in the last four months. The prolonged war between Russia and Ukraine caused all round inflation which resulted in an uncertain scenario. So, the impact of the withdrawal of 15% export duty on steel products and iron ore would be known only after sometime.”

Another entrepreneur manufacturing weighbridges Mr Sirjan Singh is quoted as saying that “, The withdrawal of duty would be a boost to steel manufacturing industry as it was expected to increase exports. At the same time, it was likely to lead to an increase in prices of steel in the domestic market which will adversely affect various industries in India such as automobiles, energy, construction, machinery and others as the cost of raw material will dramatically increase.”

Following intensive committee work, the German Steel Federation WV Stahl has presented a coherent proposal for a label system A-E to define and mark green steel as a joint result of the work of the German steel industry. This takes into account the CO2-footprint of a specific product, also take transformative steps by companies towards emission reductions and make them assessable in a classification system. This enables the targeted incentive and flanking of the necessary investments for climate neutrality and the ramp-up of green steel. With its proposal, the steel industry in Germany would like to support the politically desired development of (lead) markets for climate-friendly products in Germany and the EU.

WV Stahl President Mr Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff said “With its proposal for a label system for green steel, the steel industry in Germany is sending a strong signal for industrial transformation. We are thus presenting a concept on the basis of which it can be discussed in concrete terms how green lead markets can be created, which were already envisaged in the Steel Action Plan from 2020 and also in the coalition agreement. We hope that the German government will now quickly take up this impulse, discuss it with all relevant stakeholders and also bring it into the ongoing international discussions at the G-7 and within the framework of climate clubs.”

Green lead markets for raw materials such as green steel are a key policy building block on the way to a climate-neutral industry. Their basic idea is to set targeted incentives for the use of green steel on the demand side as well, in order to enable the gradual conversion to climate-friendly processes, which are associated with high investment and initially even higher operating costs. This relieves the necessary state start-up funding and replaces it in the future.

To achieve this, definitional questions must first be clarified: When is steel to be classified as green or climate-neutral? To what extent can investments that only lead to climate-neutral steel be credited if, in particular, sufficient green energy (electricity, hydrogen) is available? And finally: Which standards can ensure that all actors calculate and balance according to the same rules, so that different transformation paths can be compared and thus assessed? The clarification of these questions is urgent and important in order to be able to set the political course and give companies planning security for their investment decisions.

    Vietnamese HRC market bounces back
    409 Views

The Vietnamese hot rolled coil market is seeing an uptick in prices, Kallanish notes. Chinese HRC prices have gone up and local producer Formosa Ha Tinh (FHS)’s latest domestic prices are providing some support to the market.

Chinese 2mm and up thickness SAE 1006 HRC offers are prevailing at $560/tonne cfr Vietnam, Vietnamese trading sources. A popular Chinese mill’s offer for 50% 2mm thickness and the rest above 2mm thickness was pegged on Friday morning at $560/t cfr Ho Chih Minh (HCM)/Hai Phong port, for January 2023 shipment. Chinese SAE 1006 HRC offers were previously at $550-560/t cfr on 11 November. Offers had sunk to recent lows of $500-510/t cfr in early November.

A Vietnamese trader hears that a leading re-roller in southern Vietnam ordered 10,000 tonnes of Taiwanese SAE 1006 2mm and up thickness HRC at $550/t cfr on 17 November. However, others did not hear of the deal and expressed surprise about it taking place. The buyer would be better off buying FHS's material, they explain.

“I wonder why they didn’t book FHS to avoid any exchange rate change,” a trader in HCM says. FHS announced on 17 November that its sales price for non-skin-passed SAE 1006 HRC will be set at the equivalent of $550/t cfr Vietnam. Freight to Ho Chi Minh is $10/t, trading sources say. “If the Taiwanese mill gave thin gauges in the cargo, then the deal is possible,” a trader in Hanoi says. He believes demand from re-rollers is returning. While inventories for SS400 grade HRC are still high, SAE 1006 HRC stocks are "so-so”.

"I have my doubts," a regional trader says. He also believes that for the Taiwanese HRC deal to take place, it would have to involve "thin sizes and odd width, otherwise they can buy Formosa”. Imported HRC may be priced $10/t lower than local strip in order to make import deals workable.

The regional trader and others hear that FHS sold large export tonnages of HRC to India and the EU at around $510-520/t fob during the week ending 11 November. The mill’s new target export price is at $530-535/t fob, the Hanoi trader says.

Kallanish assessed SAE grade 2-2.7mm thickness HRC at $530-540/t cfr Vietnam, up $10 on-week.
