Vestas Secures V150-4.2 MW Wind Project in Germany

Demonstrating the slow and stepwise growth that currently characterises the German wind market as it recovers from a historic low in 2019 due to a lack of permits, Vestas has received its second and final order for the 34 MW Dreieck Spreeau wind project, located in Brandenburg in eastern Germany. The 8 MW order, placed by experienced project developer ABO Wind AG, comprises two V150-4.2 MW turbines and it follows an unannounced 25 MW order for the same wind park earlier this year. The project is Vestas’ largest with V150-4.2 MW turbines in Germany to date.

Vestas worked closely with the customer to tailor a solution for the wind park that comprises a total of eight V150-4.2 MW turbines at 166m hub heights in combination with a 15-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 500) service agreement, maximising the annual energy production of the project.

The order takes Vestas’ firm order intake in Germany past 250 MW in 2020, adding to Vestas’ 8,300 wind turbines totaling more than 14.5 GW installed in the country.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021, while commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2022.

DNV GL acts as Lenders Technical Advisor for financing Gecama Wind Farm in Spain

Leading resource of independent energy experts and certification body DNV GL successfully completed a technical due diligence on behalf of Banco de Sabadell SA and Bankia SA for financing the construction of the Gecama wind farm. The project’s 312 MW of total installed capacity is the largest single wind farm in Spain. Gecama is expected to provide clean energy to approximately 260,000 Spanish households. Located in the province of Cuenca Castilla La Mancha in Spain, the wind farm is planned to enter commercial operation in 2022 and will reduce CO2 emissions annually by approximately 150,000 tons.

To support the two banks during the financing process, DNV GL provided a variety of technical services bringing together a multidisciplinary team of experts to undertake an integrated assessment and review of different aspects, such as the energy production, technology and design, grid connection arrangements, construction and operation and maintenance contracts, permitting, environmental, social and health and safety compliance, amongst others.

Financial close occurred in June 2020. DNV GL will continue to act as Lenders’ Technical Advisor during the construction phase of the project.

In the midst of the energy transition, energy companies are now taking the decisive steps for in the decarbonization of the future energy mix. After the first auction schemes in Spain in 2017, the national energy and climate plan PNIEC has given a strong signal to accelerate the renewable energy generation. In the next decade, according to the plan, wind installed capacity will be doubled while solar installed capacity will be multiplied by six in Spain to meet the challenging targets of the PNIEC. Spain will feed large amounts of renewables into the energy mix while managing the integration of new technologies such as storage, EVs and distributed generation.

Iberdrola East Anglia ONE Wind Farm Operational in UK Waters

Iberdrola, through its subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has put into operation what is now the largest wind farm in its history and one of the world's largest of its kind: the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm in British waters in the North Sea. With an installed capacity of 714 megawatts, the 102 turbines that comprise it are already operational, producing clean energy for 630,000 British homes. East Anglia ONE started up on schedule despite the complex environment generated by the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, around 20% of the installation of the turbines was carried out during the lockdown period in the United Kingdom, which forced the company and its professionals to change their working methods: smaller boats were fitted out to reduce the crews as much as possible, spaces were created for professionals to live together to avoid contact with people outside the project and specific health protocols were developed, avoiding changes to the teams.

East Anglia ONE is fully operational, after an investment of GBP 2.5 billion and the generation of 3,500 jobs during its construction. Specifically, the Spanish company Navantia has manufactured the park's substation, which has been christened Andalucía II, at its facilities in Puerto Real Cádiz. This large infrastructure is responsible for collecting the electricity produced by the wind turbines and transforming the voltage for its transmission to the coast, via two export cables on the seabed, each about 85 kilometres long. In addition, Navantia Fene, in Galicia, has built 42 jackets or foundations on which the wind turbines are supported, each more than 167 metres high, while the Asturian company Windar built the corresponding piles at its workshops in Avilés (Asturias).

Following the launch of the East Anglia ONE, Iberdrola now has its sights set on the East Anglia HUB, which is the group's largest marine project worldwide and comprises three projects with a total capacity of 3,100 MW: East Anglia ONE North, East Anglia TWO and East Anglia THREE.The development of this large complex, which is scheduled to start in 2022, will require an investment of £6.5 billion, more than EUR .6 billion. The three farms will be developed simultaneously and will make Iberdrola one of the leading operators in the UK offshore wind sector.

    Rolf Schuttenhelm 2 uur geleden

Corona stuwt Deense havenstad Esbjerg richting offshorewind

‘Esbjerg is perfect gepositioneerd’, zegt Pedersen.

Iberdrola Completes Supply Contracts for Saint-Brieuc Offshore Wind Farm in English Channel

Iberdrola continues to make progress in the development of Saint Brieuc, its first large-scale offshore wind project in Brittany with EUR 2.4 billion investment and 496 megawatts installed capacity and has awarded a major contract for the construction of the offshore substation. A joint venture, formed by Eiffage Métal and Engie Solutions, will be responsible for the fabrication of all the structural elements of the substation, except for the electrical equipment. Eiffage Métal will be in charge of the engineering and construction of the foundation and topside that houses the transformers and electrical equipment. ENGIE Solutions will carry out final assembly work and commissioning tests.

The substation is one of the key elements of the windfarm, tasked with collecting and preparing for export all the electricity produced by the 62 wind turbines, estimated at around 1,820 GWh per year. With this energy production it will be possible to sustainably meet the demand of 835,000 people and avoid the emission of 100,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

The substation is made up of a jacket foundation, measuring 63 m high and weighing 1,630 tons and a topside measuring 55 m long, 31 m wide and 23 m high, with a total weight of approximately 3,400 tons.

Fabrication works, scheduled to finish in early 2022, will be carried out in the yards operated by Eiffage in Belgium and Poland with final assembly works to take place in Belgium at the shipyards run by Engie Solutions.

Phase 1 of Nordex Wieringermeer Project Connected to Grid

The Nordex Group has successfully completed the first part of the Dutch 300 MW project Wieringermeer for its customer Vattenfall: The last of 50 N117/3600 turbines were connected to the grid in August. The location of the project, not to mention the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, posed particular challenges. Construction of the next phase, with another 32 N117/3600 turbines, is already under way. Located 60 kilometres north of Amsterdam, the site boasts excellent wind conditions. However, Wieringermeer is a polder, i.e. a diked area of reclaimed land seven metres below sea level. Measuring 300 km2 in size, the area is crisscrossed by canals and also includes a protected forest, making it a particular challenge in terms of logistics and construction. As there wasn’t much in terms of suitable storage space available, the Nordex Group delivered the towers, nacelles, drive trains and hubs as and when they were required. The turbines came in seven different nacelle configurations. It was therefore also important to deliver the right turbine to the appropriate location.

Due to the low bearing capacity of the ground, the foundations had to be piled and also raised by 1.5 metres to prevent flooding. In addition, rare bird breeding restrictions posed limits on access and operation to some turbines and the number of cranes allowed on the construction site.

The specific requirements of this project forced Nordex Group to modify its processes. For example, a token-based permitting system ensured that it was possible to safely assign multiple construction teams reliably to specific turbines. This approach avoided work scope conflicts and maximised efficiency.

In addition, new functions such as a technical project manager were implemented to act as an interface with engineering and other technical departments. On top of this, quality and documentation managers, as well a strong HSE team, were deployed on site to meet Vattenfall’s own high standards.

At the peak of the activities, eight large cranes and over 120 persons were working on the construction site at any one time. To ensure that this large number of people were able to work safely on site despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nordex Group recruited a Dutch paramedic in addition to implementing general travel restrictions and hygiene precautions. Their task was to check the temperature of all staff at the site each day before they commenced their duties and to provide medical advice if anyone developed any symptoms. These precautions provided the employees with a certain degree of protection from the heightened risk of infection through their work, and the associated contact with many people, and ultimately proved to be successful: at no time was it necessary to interrupt work on the project due to the pandemic.
