    Nucor verslaat eigen verwachtingen

'Personeel Tata Steel IJmuiden teleurgesteld over afhaken Zweden'

British Steel Unveils Enhanced Zinoco Coated Rail

British Steel has unveiled 2 world firsts with major upgrades to its Zinoco coated rail. The new long-length Zinoco, which was developed at British Steel’s Scunthorpe headquarters, has all the benefits of its shorter counterparts, offering exceptional corrosion protection with a typical life extension of 5 to 10 times. It achieves the highest levels of durability through excellent impact and abrasion resistance, and also provides sacrificial cathodic protection, an electro chemical reaction which occurs when the anode sacrifices itself in favour of the cathode. The resulting flow of electrons prevents a corrosive chemical reaction.

With Zinoco coated rail, the zinc rich (anode) coating corrodes in preference to the steel (cathode), therefore preventing the steel from corroding. The zinc oxide creates a strong barrier to further corrosion in this way the protection of the metal is guaranteed, even when the zinc layer is damaged.

Another benefit of British Steel’s long-length Zinoco is the need for fewer welds which makes installation quicker and gives the rails greater integrity. Suitable for any track environment, including third (live current) and fourth (negative) rail areas, Zinoco is available on any grade and any profile. And it has become the only rail corrosion protection system approved for use across all Network Rail infrastructures.

When the company launched the Zinoco rail corrosion protection system in 2016 it was a revolutionary product that could withstand some of the harshest corrosive environments such as coastal lines, level crossings and wet tunnels. Rail in these areas can become contaminated with salt, water, minerals and biological matter so need a tough, durable solution, which Zinoco provides.

Executives Urge to Merge NINL with PSU

The Pioneer reported that the Neelachal Executive Association has urged for merger of the Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited under a Central PSU. Reiterating its demand for merger of all assets of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited rather than divestment of the plant, Neelachal Executive Association General Secretary Mr Ajit Pradhan said “Since all the present shareholders of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited are from State and Cental PSUs, the Government should find out a mechanism to merge the unit with a steel PSU like SAIL, RINL or NMDC who are in the business of mines and steel making. In such an event MMTC shares can be taken over by a steel PSU.”

After the decision of strategic disinvestment of 100% shares in Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, major promoter MMTC as well as other promoters have stopped funding for running of the plant leading to suspension of production of all units since March 2020 and the employees have not been their salary for past ten months.

ArcelorMittal Investing in its Saint Chely d’Apcher Plant

ArcelorMittal is investing 13 million euro in its Saint Chely d’Apcher plant in France, which specializes in iCARe electrical steels for the automotive sector. The investment means the plant will be able to produce cutting edge non grain oriented iCARe electrical steel grades, through production upgrades and new production capabilities, to meet the requirements of the booming electromobility market.

Since 2013, with the construction of a new continuous annealing line, ArcelorMittal Saint Chely d’Apcher has been undergoing a series of transformations to become a leading supplier for the electromobility market, with its iCARe range of electrical steels for automotive e-traction motors. With this investment, ArcelorMittal will be at the forefront of developing new generations of electrical steel solutions for full electric and hybrid vehicles.

iCARe is the brand name of ArcelorMittal’s range of electrical steels for e-mobility. Their high energy efficiency and performance offer the best trade-off between high strength, low losses, and high polarization. ArcelorMittal’s iCARe offer enables OEMs to design compact, lightweight, efficient, and power-dense traction motors with unmatched range. The second generation of iCARe steels made improved power density possible, compared with the first generation. This is reflected in less weight for the same motor performance, which in turn results in increased driving range. This also applies to the many small motors on board the car, because an improved energy balance saves electricity and thereby extends the range. There are currently four steel types included in ArcelorMittal’s iCARe offering: Save, 420 Save, Torque and Speed. Each has been specifically designed for a typical electric automotive application.

ArcelorMittal’s existing NO electrical steels customers, such as the power generation sector, will also benefit from this upgrade.

ArcelorMittal South Africa to Incraese Vaal Melt Shop Output

South African media reported that ArcelorMittal South Africa will increase output from its Vaal Meltshop electric arc furnace in the short term to help address prevailing steel shortages, with the possibility of maintaining these levels based on future demand. ArcelorMittal South Africa CEO Mr Kobus Verster said "With the Vaal Meltshop fully operational and supplementing our three blast furnaces in Newcastle and Vanderbijlpark, we expect that we will be more than able to meet the steel requirements in South Africa and neighbouring countries in the coming months.

The steel demand had hit a slump in 2020, with Covid-19 lockdowns contributing to the low domestic demand. ArcelorMittal responded to the downward trend in July last year by temporarily idling furnaces at Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging until demand for steel had recovered.

The producer said placing the Vaal Meltshop under care and maintenance would have potentially led to some 85 job losses, while keeping the plant running could add jobs.

    China Closing Small Ferrochrome Furnaces

Leading commodity research company Roskill Information Services Ltd announced that under the guidance of China’s 14th five year plan of 2021-2025, officials in Inner Mongolia have started to impose several measures to develop a greener Chinese ferroalloy and steel industry. To ensure that the energy consumption per unit of GDP will decrease by 3.4% in 2021, an electricity policy to cut supply was issued by Wulanchabu Industrial and Information Technology bureau on 10 January, followed by the Fengzhen government issuing an updated notice for its ferrochrome industry on 23 January to control energy consumption.

    The resultant furnace regulations include

All furnaces below 25MVA must be shut down. Producers who produce noble alloys, will have their product reviewed by end-February and be allowed to operate if the required qualifications are met

Only one open or semi-closed furnace above 25MVA can be put into operation by operators, while the rest of the furnaces must be shut down. All open and semi-closed furnaces are required to complete the technological upgrading to closed furnaces, and only qualified furnaces can come back online after they are examined by the government before the end of February

All furnaces, regardless of size, will be examined according to the energy consumption indicators from Bureau of Statistics at the end of February. Those not meeting the required qualifications will be forced to shut down

Fengzhen is one of the core areas in Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia for producing high carbon ferrochrome (HC FeCr) in China, with the total capacity accounting for around 30% of Inner Mongolia and 15% of the country. However, nearly half of the area’s furnaces are below 25MVA.

At this point, it is not clear if and when this regulation will filter through into the other key ferroalloy producing regions, but for now it is in line with China’s 14th five-year plan (2021-2025) which outlines:

Replacing high-speed growth with high-quality growth

Rebalancing its economy with supply-side structural reform

Driving modernization through innovation and technological advancements

Promoting high-end, intelligent, and green production

Structural reforms of smelting furnaces in China have generally moved in tandem with the development of larger, cleaner furnaces. These furnaces also operate at higher efficiency rates and therefore inevitably lead to a net increase in operational capacity.

The closure of small and non-closed ferrochrome furnaces in China has already been ongoing, but the decision to close all furnaces up to 25MVA has caught many in the industry off-guard, as the expected closures were thought to coincide with the development of new capacity. All furnaces below 25MVA across China account for about two-thirds of total installed capacity, although this is significantly lower when comparing operational capacity. Nevertheless, available furnaces larger than 25MVA are theoretically capable of accounting for the equivalent volume of China’s total 2019 output level. Therefore, any growth in FeCr supply in China will be underpinned by expansion projects of larger furnaces.
