   A Manhattan prosecutor trying to get President Donald Trump’s tax returns told a judge Monday that he was justified in demanding them, citing public reports of “extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization.”
   
   Trump’s lawyers last month said the grand jury subpoena for the tax returns was issued in bad faith and amounted to harassment of the president.
   
   Manhattan District Attorney District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. seeks eight years of the Republican president’s personal and corporate tax records, but has disclosed little about what prompted him to request the records, other than part of the investigation relates to payoffs to women to keep them quiet about alleged affairs with Trump.
   
   "This Court is already aware that this assertion is fatally undermined by undisputed information in the public record,” Vance’s lawyers wrote. They said that information confirms the validity of a subpoena seeking evidence related to potentially improper financial transactions by a variety of individuals and entities over a period of years.
   
   They said public reporting demonstrates that at the time the subpoena was issued “there were public allegations of possible criminal activity at Plaintiff’s New York County-based Trump Organization dating back over a decade.”
   
   “These reports describe transactions involving individual and corporate actors based in New York County, but whose conduct at times extended beyond New York’s borders. This possible criminal activity occurred within the applicable statutes of limitations, particularly if the transactions involved a continuing pattern of conduct,” the lawyers said.
   
   The lawyers urged Judge Victor Marrero to swiftly reject Trump’s arguments, saying the baseless claims were threatening the investigation. Marrero, who ruled against Trump last year, has scheduled arguments to be fully submitted by mid-August.
   
   “Every day that goes by is another day Plaintiff effectively achieves the ‘temporary absolute immunity’ that was rejected by this Court, the Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court,” Vance’s lawyers said. “Every such day also increases the prospect of a loss of evidence or the expiration of limitations periods — the precise concerns that the Supreme Court observed justified its rejection of Plaintiff’s immunity claim in the first place.”
   
   The Supreme Court last month rejected claims by Trump’s lawyers that the president could not be criminally investigated while he was in office.

   Het is mogelijk dat er GOP leden zijn die niet openlijk juichen en springen met de hernieuwde keus van Donald. Misschien zelfs tegenstemmen? Als het besloten is kan hij naderhand weer liegen, en doodleuk tweetten, ze houden allemaal van mij, en hebben door hun vertrouwen en geloof in hun lievelings-- president mij weer herkozen.

    Trump tried to play chicken with the Manhattan DA — and failed spectacularly: ex-federal prosecutor
    
    Former federal prosecutor turned CNN legal analyst Shanlon Wu explained that President Donald Trump shot himself in the foot demanding details about the investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance.
    
    Wu tweeted the recent report announcing Vance is investigating Trump and the Trump Organization for possible fraud. Trump presumably assumed that the investigation was merely a fishing expedition, demanding that Vance further justify his reasons for the subpoena they issued. That’s exactly what they did, effectively disclosing that a grand jury was impaneled to look into Trump bank or tax fraud.
    
    “Great example of Trump strategy back-firing – by forcing Manhattan DA’s office to further detail/justify reasons for their subpoena they also forced disclosure of fact that Trump & his company under a live criminal investigation. Oops,” tweeted Wu on Monday
    
    Vance has also opposed granting extensions on the subpoenas as Trump’s lawyers have asked. The legal team for the president has worked to stall as much as possible, asking for extensions, then filing appeals, taking it to the Supreme Court. The stall tactics only brought the legal trouble closer to the election
    
    Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti noted that it has been “obvious for a while” that Vance wasn’t fishing, he had evidence and a case. He noted that Vance has also argued that “granting extensions on subpoenas could effectively immunize Trump.” In the filing Monday, Vance came “right out and [said] that they are investigating Trump’s company.” Mariotti noted it “is significant.”
    
    “This shows the DA is focused on specific criminal charges and not just poking around the financials,” CNN legal analyst Elie Honig explained.
    
    Former Obama administration acting-Solicitor General Neal Katyal said that these cases “can move quickly,” once it became clear that Trump exhausted all of his tactics to delay.

    Amsterdam - Donald Trump en zijn bedrijf zouden mogelijk bank- en verzekeringsfraude hebben gepleegd. Volgens de openbaar aanklager in New York, Cyrus Vance, gaat het „mogelijk om grootschalig en langdurig crimineel gedrag.”
    
    Vance doet al langer onderzoek naar de belastingaangiftes van Trump, maar heeft het onderzoek nu uitgebreid. Er is een officieel onderzoek ingediend om de persoonlijke belastingaangiften van de president en die van de Trump Organisation over de laatste acht jaar in te zien.
    
    In eerste instantie richtte het onderzoek naar mogelijke fraude zich vooral op vrouwen met wie Trump een affaire heeft gehad en die door geld van de Trump organisatie waren afgekocht. Het draait nu echter om meer dan zwijggeld voor die vrouwen, waaronder porno-actrice Stormy Daniels.
    Geheim onderzoek
    
    Het onderzoek naar Trump is geheim maar de aanklagers lieten wel doorschemeren dat ze genoeg aanwijzingen hebben om het onderzoek uit te breiden. Ze wezen onder meer naar de getuigenis van de voormalige advocaat van Trump, Michael Cohen, voor een Congrescommissie waarbij deze al sprak over verzekeringsfraude binnen de onderneming van Trump.
    
    Cohen noemde Trump toen „een oplichter en een bedrieger.” De president haalde op zijn beurt fel uit naar zijn voormalige vertrouweling die hij een ’rat’ noemde. Cohen zou volgens de president liegen om zo een lagere straf te krijgen.
    Trump spreekt van heksenjacht
    
    In tegenstelling tot andere presidenten heeft Trump nooit zijn belastingpapieren openbaar gemaakt. Hij vindt dat er een heksenjacht op hem wordt gemaakt. Het Hooggerechtshof sprak dat begin juli tegen en zei dat de president niet is vrijgesteld van de plicht om op verzoek bewijs aan te leveren in een strafprocedure. Dat is overigens een langdurig proces en de zaak zal niet zijn afgerond voor de Amerikaanse verkiezingen in november.
    Niet geschokt
    
    Grote vraag is ook of de kwestie invloed heeft op de volksraadpleging. De vaste Trump-aanhangers zullen door het bredere onderzoek niet geschokt zijn, die menen evenals Trump dat er sprake is van vooringenomenheid bij de onderzoeken naar de financiële handel en wandel van hun idool. Over het algemeen maakt de kiezer zich meer zorgen over de corona-pandemie en het slechte economische klimaat.

    Na een daling tot ruim 500 doden per dag door corona in de US is ruim 30 dagen geleden het aantal doden per dag door corona gestegen naar 1122 doden per dag door corona in de US op 1 augustus.

    En Donald Trump besteed er geen aandacht aan, behalve "let it happen....until we have a vaccin"
    De economie moet draaien en daarom moeten de scholen open en de doden nemen we op de koop toe.
    
    De kiezers, ook de Republikeinen, betalen het gelag, met de doden. Niet alleen de doden zelf, maar ook de familieleden die een dierbare verliezen zullen toch wel achter hun oren krabben, of dit nog wel een acceptabele opstelling is om de pandemie te bestrijden.
    
    En 3 november zijn er verkiezingen, dan spreekt het volk.
